Maha: Court grants bail to 111 people held during protest against refinery

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: A court in Maharashtra’s Ratnagiri has granted bail to 111 people, most of them women, who were arrested for holding an agitation against a proposed oil refinery at Barsu village in the coastal district.

More than 100 women were among the protesters who tried to block a road in Barsu and Solgaon areas of Ratnagiri, around 400km from Mumbai, on Tuesday by lying on the ground to stop government vehicles from entering the proposed site of the refinery.

“The Ratnagiri police arrested the 111 protesters. After their arrest, they were produced in a court later that evening, which then granted bail to them,” an official said.

    MS Education Academy

Since a large number of police personnel were deployed in the area on Wednesday, peace prevailed in the area and no agitation was held during the day, he said.

The protesters were booked under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections related to unlawful assembly, rioting, disobedience to an order lawfully promulgated by a public servant, wrongful restraint and relevant provisions of the Maharashtra Police Act, he added.

Local residents fear that the mega project will adversely affect the fragile biodiversity of the coastal Konkan region and also hit their livelihood. The opposition Shiv Sena (UBT) came out in their support and demanded an immediate end to “atrocities” against protesters.

Deeply concerning to see our athletes protest on streets: Abhinav Bindra

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Hours after star wrestler Vinesh Phogat appealed to sportspersons to join their protest to oust under-fire chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, Olympic champion shooter Abhinav Bindra took to social media to announce his solidarity with the athletes.

Vinesh along with Olympic medallists Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik have been sitting on an indefinite protest at Jantar Mantar against WFI supremo Singh, who has allegedly harassed seven female wrestlers including a minor.

Bindra, who has always voiced his opinion in favour of distressed sportspersons, took to twitter to term the incident “deeply concerning”.

    MS Education Academy

“As athletes, we train hard every day to represent our country on the international stage. It is deeply concerning to see our athletes finding it necessary to protest on the streets regarding the allegations of harassment in the Indian wrestling administration,” Bindra tweeted.

Bindra said that all the concerns raised by top wrestlers should be addressed by the administration.

“My heart goes out to all those who have been affected. We must ensure that this issue is handled properly, with the athletes’ concerns heard and addressed fairly and independently.

“This incident highlights the crucial need for a proper safeguarding mechanism that can prevent harassment and ensure justice for those affected. We must work towards creating a safe and secure environment for all athletes to thrive in,” he added.

Maha: 111 people held during protest against refinery; Sena (UBT) says stop ‘atrocities’

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Police on Tuesday arrested 111 people, most of them women, during a protest against a proposed oil refinery at Barsu village in Maharashtra’s coastal Ratnagiri district, an official said.

More than 100 women were among the protesters who tried to block a road in Barsu and Solgaon areas of the district, around 400km from Mumbai, by lying on the ground to stop government vehicles from entering the proposed site of the refinery, he said.

The protesters were booked under IPC sections related to unlawful assembly, rioting, disobedience to an order lawfully promulgated by a public servant, wrongful restraint and relevant provisions of the Maharashtra Police Act, the official said, adding they will be produced before a court at Rajapur town in Ratnagiri district on Wednesday.

    MS Education Academy

Local residents fear the mega project will adversely affect the fragile biodiversity of the coastal Konkan region and also hit their livelihood. The Opposition Shiv Sena (UBT) came out in their support and demanded an immediate end to “atrocities” against protesters.

A government team was scheduled to conduct a survey at the site in Barsu and Solgaon areas of Rajapur, on Monday, but locals started staging protests, the official said.

During the protest, women lay on the ground to prevent vehicles of the district administration and police from entering the areas, he said.

Considering the law and order situation, hundreds of police personnel were deployed at the project site, the official said.

Ratnagiri Superintendent of Police Dhananjay Kulkarni and other senior police officials were at the spot to avoid any untoward incident, he said.

Opposition leader Ajit Pawar of the NCP earlier in the day demanded that protests by locals against the refinery project be handled sensitively and urged that the state government stop the survey work till a peaceful solution was found.

Shiv Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut demanded an immediate end to “atrocities” against locals and asserted his party will not sit quietly on the issue and back the people.

Talking to reporters, Raut alleged the protesters were being pressurised by Industries Minister Uday Samant with the help of police.

“This is a government with a perverse mentality. They want a Jallianwala Bagh-like massacre. We are with people and the Shiv Sena (UBT) will not sit quiet,” Raut said.

He said Chief Minister Eknath Shinde thinks he is a “messiah” of the poor, but has left on a three-day “leave” in a helicopter, a reference to the CM going to his hometown in Satara district.

Shinde should instead take the helicopter to Barsu and meet the protesters there, said the Rajya Sabha member.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and former minister Aaditya Thackeray said, “The government should stop atrocities on people and also the soil survey.”

The former state environment minister said the government should start a dialogue with the agitating local residents.

The previous Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government had put some conditions before giving a nod to the project which included taking the locals into confidence and explaining the details of the venture and its benefits, Thackeray said.

  • Tens of thousands of Israelis protest against judicial reform

Tens of thousands of Israelis protest against judicial reform

    [ad_1]

Tel Aviv: Thousands of protesters flocked to Tel Aviv and cities across Israel to express their opposition to the government’s plan to overhaul the country’s judicial system, Al Jazeera reported.

Crowds of Israeli protestors held banners in Tel Aviv at Saturday’s protest, the latest in a series of weekly actions since the start of the year.

Plans by Netanyahu’s government to reform the Judicial System have outraged Israelis who see it as an assault on their country’s system of checks and balances and a threat to its very democracy.

    MS Education Academy

“This is not about so-called judicial reform, it’s about democracy,” said Sheila Katz, head of the National Council of Jewish Women, from the rally in central Tel Aviv.

“In order for your sacred courts to protect the rights of all people, they must remain independent from politics,” she added.

Protests last month brought Israeli cities to a standstill and threatened to shut down the economy, compelling Netanyahu to delay the judicial reform plan in hopes of finding a compromise.

However, protesters have been undeterred. Crowds of Israelis have flooded the streets in the weeks after Netanyahu backed down, demanding that the overhaul be scrapped altogether.

The plan would give Netanyahu and his partners in Israel’s most hardline coalition in its history the final say in appointing the nation’s judges.

It would also give Parliament the authority to overturn Supreme Court decisions and limit the court’s ability to review laws.

Thousands of officers in elite reserve units of the military have said they will refuse to report for duty. High-tech business leaders and the security establishment have come out against the proposal. Trade unions have called for a general strike.

Netanyahu agreed in late March to call a timeout on advancing legislation that would give the government almost complete control over almost all judicial appointments to the Supreme Court and other courts, along with other parts of the judicial package. The month-long suspension was announced after weeks of intensifying protests had brought the country practically to a standstill.

However, leaders of the protest movement have threatened to deploy new forms of non-violent civil disobedience if lawmakers move to swiftly advance the legislation, highlighting rampant doubts around talks to reach a compromise on the sweeping reforms.

One of the major forms of non-violent civil disobedience used so far has been to block major highways and junctions around the country, causing severe traffic jams and leading to confrontations with the police who have used water cannons and stun grenades to disperse protestors.

Protesters have continued to express heavy distrust toward the negotiations between Yesh Atid and National Unity on one side and the ruling coalition on the other, under the auspices of President Isaac Herzog. They allege the talks are a ruse to quell the protest movement and advance the legislation quietly.

Opponents worry that the judicial appointments bill, which had advanced to its last two Knesset votes before the freeze was announced, could go before the Knesset plenum for final approval at a moment’s notice once the Knesset returns from its Passover recess at the end of the month.

They say it will drastically weaken Israel’s democratic character, remove a key element of its checks and balances and leave minorities unprotected. Proponents of the government’s overhaul plans say reforms are needed to rein in politically motivated judicial activism.

  • WFI sexual harassment case: Wrestlers back to protest at Jantar Mantar

WFI sexual harassment case: Wrestlers back to protest at Jantar Mantar

    [ad_1]

Top Indian wrestlers who protested against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chairman and other coaches earlier this year, accusing them of sexually abusing female wrestlers, have returned to Delhi’s Jantar Mantar with a fresh police complaint.

Seven female wrestlers have filed a sexual harassment case against federation leader Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh at Central Delhi’s Connaught Place police station.

A First Information Report based on the complaint has yet to be submitted, wrestler Sakshee Malikh said expressing frustration that a government panel report on the topic has not yet been made public.

    MS Education Academy

“We want the report that contains the statements of the female wrestlers to be made public. It’s a sensitive issue, and one of the complainants is a minor girl,” she added and stressed that the complainants’ identities should not be revealed.

Another top wrestler Bajrang Punia stated that they won’t leave until Brij Bhushan is arrested.

Vinesh Phogat stated that despite numerous attempts to reach out, they have received no answer from the administration.

“We’re going to sleep and eat here until justice is served. For three months, we have been attempting to reach them (union sports minister Anurag Thakur and other relevant authorities). Members of the committee have not responded to us, nor has the sports ministry; they have not even returned our calls. We’ve won medals for the country and put our careers on the line for this,” she remarked.

On January 23, the Sports Ministry established a five-member monitoring committee, led by famed boxer MC Mary Kom, and instructed it to present its findings within one month.

On the protesting wrestlers’ request, it later extended the deadline by two weeks and appointed Babita Phogat as the panel’s sixth member. The committee delivered its report in the first week of April, but the government has yet to release its conclusions.

According to reports, the wrestlers were unable to substantiate the sexual harassment charges against the WFI chief after many hearings.

The wrestlers had previously stated that they did not want to go to court because they trusted the Prime Minister, but had warned them to go to the police if the government did not act. They expressed dissatisfaction with negotiations at the sports ministry mediated by olympian Babita Phogat, a BJP member and member of the Haryana government. Anurag Thakur spoke with the wrestlers about the charges, which he described as ‘serious.’

The Delhi Commission for Women, the state agency concerned with women’s concerns, has sent a notice to Delhi Police for neglecting to file an FIR in the case.

  • Satya Pal Malik, Khap leaders protest at Delhi police station

Satya Pal Malik, Khap leaders protest at Delhi police station

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Former Jammu and Kashmir governor Satya Pal Malik, who has been called by the CBI over an alleged insurance ‘scam’, and some Khap leaders held a protest at a police station here on Saturday after not being allowed to hold a meeting at a south Delhi park as they lacked requisite permission, according to officials, who rejected reports that he was detained.

Questioning the police action, Malik said he and his supporters had gone to the R K Puram Police Station to protest as he was stopped from giving food to Khap leaders at the park. According to police, they all left the police station around 2.30 pm.

Senior Haryana-based farmer leader Gurnam Singh Chaduni said the meeting was called by Malik and a group of khap leaders, but nobody was scheduled to speak at the venue. “Where is violation of rules in this?” he asked.

    MS Education Academy

The meeting was scheduled to be held at the MCD park in R K Puram and Malik was supposed to take part, a police officer said.

He said the former Jammu and Kashmir governor was informed this was not a place to hold a meeting and also that he has not taken a permission from the authorities concerned.

After that he and his supporters left the place and arrived at the R K Puram police station, the officer added.

The Delhi Police issued a statement, saying he had gone to the police station “of his own volition”, refuting reports that Malik had been detained.

“We have not detained former governor Satya Pal Malik. He came on his own choice, along with his supporters, to the R K Puram police station and we have informed him that he can leave at his own will,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Manoj C said in a statement.

Speaking to the media persons before going to the police station, Malik said he wanted to give food to the Khap leaders who were at the park.

“I don’t have much space in my house, so I decided to give them food here (at the park). They (police) have orders from somewhere not to allow the gathering and let me give them the food. I told them ‘arrest me and I am coming with you’.” When asked what the police told him, he said, “(they said) will not allow.” “Why should we go to an alternative place? We will go to the police station and offer a satyagrah there…I am going to R K Puram police station and I will protest there,” he said.

Farmer leader Gurnam Singh Chaduni told PTI, “I fail to understand why we were not allowed by police to hold the meeting as there was no scheduled speech of any farmer leaders there. Malik ji wanted to serve food to farmer leaders at the park. Where is violation of rules in this.” Asked whether the said meeting was scheduled in wake of the CBI asking Malik to answer certain queries in connection with an alleged insurance scam in Jammu and Kashmir, Chaduni said, “It (meeting) was already scheduled to be held on Saturday.” Earlier in the day, the Delhi Police took to Twitter to say that reports about Malik’s detention was false.

“False information is being spread on social media handles regarding the detention of Sh. Satyapal Malik, Ex. Gov. Whereas, he himself has arrived at P.S. R K Puram along with his supporters. He has been informed that he is at liberty to leave at his own will,” it said in a tweet.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has asked Malik to answer certain queries in connection with an alleged insurance scam in Jammu and Kashmir.

This is the second time in seven months that Malik, who has served as the governor of various states, will be questioned by the federal agency. Malik was questioned by the CBI sleuths in October last year after he concluded his gubernatorial responsibilities in Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Goa and finally, Meghalaya.

The CBI move comes barely a week after Malik gave an interview to “The Wire”, in which he made critical remarks about the BJP-led Centre, especially regarding its handling of Jammu and Kashmir where he served as the last governor before the erstwhile state was bifurcated into Union territories.

  • Are we facing a summer of sporting protests? – podcast

    [ad_1]

It began with a protest at Britain’s biggest horse racing event. Members of the activist group Animal Rising scaled the fences at Aintree and attempted to stop the Grand National. As stewards and fans intervened, the protest managed only to delay the race for 14 minutes. As if to help prove the protesters’ point, one of the horses in the race was killed in a fall.

As chief sports reporter Sean Ingle tells Nosheen Iqbal, it was followed just days later by a stunt by another activist group. This time the target was the World Snooker Championship; play was postponed when a Just Stop Oil protester managed to clamber on to the the snooker table and launch an orange powder bomb over proceedings. This weekend, all eyes will be on the London Marathon.

As environment correspondent Damien Gayle reports, the pivot away from mass protest to high-profile stunts shows a divergence in philosophies that still divides the climate action movements. Is building popular support more important? Or bringing the maximum attention to the cause?

Atiq-Ashraf killing: Barelvi cleric says stopped from holding protest

    [ad_1]

Bareilly: Barelvi cleric and head of the Ittehad-e-Millat Council Maulana Tauqir Raza Khan on Wednesday alleged he has been put under house arrest to prevent him from staging a protest over the killing of gangsters Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf.

City Magistrate Renu Singh, however, said additional security was deployed outside the house of Maulana Tauqir Raza and people were prevented from gathering at the Islamia ground in compliance with prohibitory orders under CrPC section 144 which are in effect.

Khan later held a press conference and hit out at the government.

“We want that the investigation of the killing of Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf should be done by a judge of the Supreme court. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath should be made an accused in the case under section 120 B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC,” he said.

The cleric also criticised Prayagraj police for failing to protect Atiq and Ashraf.

    [ad_1]

Kadapa: A rally was organised in Andhra Pradesh’s Kadapa district on Sunday to protest the arrest of Kadapa MP Y.S. Avinash Reddy’s father Y.S. Bhaskar Reddy by the CBI in Y. S. Vivekananda Reddy murder case.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested Bhaskar Reddy from his residence in Pulivendula and shifted him to Hyderabad, where he will be produced before a magistrate.

Bhaskar Reddy’s supporters took out a rally in the town to protest against the arrest. Shops and business establishments also remained closed as a mark of protest.

    MS Education Academy

A rally was held from R&B Guest House to the Old Bus Stand. Wearing black badges, Bhaskar Reddy’s supporters staged a protest on Kadapa-Tadipatri highway. The protestors set afire an effigy to protest against what they call the biased approach of the CBI.

MLA R. Shivaprasad Reddy alleged that the CBI was targeting Avinash Reddy’s family members instead of taking action against the guilty.

Municipal Chairman Varaprasad also participated in the protest and condemned Bhaskar Reddy’s arrest.

Meanwhile, former MLA Vardarajula Reddy criticized YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) for organising rallies and staging protests. He said the CBI acted as per law to arrest Bhaskar Reddy but it was surprising that the ruling party organised the protest.

The CBI has booked Bhaskar Reddy for criminal conspiracy, murder and for causing disappearance of evidence.

Delhi excise policy: Kejriwal to appear before CBI today, AAP to stage protest

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will appear before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Sunday for questioning in connection with the case pertaining to alleged irregularities in the framing and implementation of the excise policy of the Union Territory government.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann would accompany Kejriwal to the CBI office on Sunday morning.

During his visit to the CBI office, Kejriwal’s cabinet colleagues and all the MPs of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will also accompany him to the CBI office.

    MS Education Academy

In a major development in the Delhi excise policy case, the CBI summoned Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for questioning in connection with the liquor policy case on Sunday.

According to sources, Aam Aadmi Party will stage a protest in the national capital during the questioning of party chief Kejriwal at the CBI office on Sunday.

“If Arvind Kejriwal is corrupt then there is no one in this world who is honest,” Delhi Chief Minister said on Saturday, a day after CBI summoned him for questioning in connection with the excise policy case.

Addressing a press conference, he said, “Tomorrow, they (CBI) have called me and I will definitely go. If Arvind Kejriwal is corrupt then there is no one in this world who is honest… If BJP has ordered CBI to arrest me, then CBI will obviously follow their instructions.”

Later, taking to Twitter, Kejriwal said appropriate cases will be filed against Central Bureau of Investigation and Enforcement Directorate officials for “perjury and producing false evidence in courts.

“We will file appropriate cases against CBI and ED officials for perjury and producing false evidence in courts,” he tweeted.

Kejriwal also claimed that he knew he would be next in line to be summoned by the CBI since the day he spoke against corruption in the Delhi assembly.

Former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, a key aide of Kejriwal, is in jail over alleged irregularities in the excise case.

Sisodia was arrested by ED and CBI in the ongoing investigation of a case related to alleged irregularities in the framing and implementation of the excise policy in Delhi.

The CBI arrested Sisodia on February 26. Later on March 9, the ED arrested him, after hours of questioning at Tihar Jail.

The ED and the CBI had alleged that irregularities were committed while modifying the excise policy, undue favours were extended to licence holders, the licence fee was waived or reduced and the L-1 licence was extended without the competent authority’s approval.

The beneficiaries diverted “illegal” gains to the accused officials and made false entries in their account books to evade detection, the probe agencies said.
