NCPCR issues notice to Indore police chief as minors seen during protest

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) on Friday sent a notice to the Police Commissioner of Indore over the presence of minors during a protest organised by some people of the Muslim community in the Madhya Pradesh city, demanding the arrest of Bajrang Dal workers for their alleged statements against Prophet Muhammad.

Stating that the use of minors in protests is in violation of the Juvenile Justice Act, the NCPCR sought a reply within 7 days from the Police Commissioner.

A video of the protests that took place on Thursday went viral on social media.

The Commission stated that it has taken suo motu cognisance of the media reports that some unruly youths in Indore’s Barwali Chowki area, brought minors and raised slogans, including ‘sar tan se juda’.

The Child Rights body, in its notice, instructed the Commissioner to take action against those who used the children in the protest, after gathering information through surfaced videos and other means, and sought a report on it.

The commission said that the minors involved in the protests should be presented before the Child Welfare Committee and a copy of the Committee’s order should be sent to the NCPCR.

Along with this, it has asked to ensure necessary action for the counselling of the minors involved in the protest.

BBC documentary screening: Students stage protest at JNU against ABVP’s ‘hooliganism’

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Members of various Left organisations staged a protest at the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus on Thursday against the “hooliganism” of the RSS-affiliated ABVP, a day after students claimed that stones were hurled at them during the screening of the controversial BBC documentary on the 2002 Gujarat riots.

The students, affiliated to the Students’ Federation of India, Democratic Students’ Federation, All India Students Association and other organisations raised slogans against the ABVP and held placards that read ‘rise in the rage against ABVP hooliganism’.

“ABVP goons hurled stones at students gathered for the screening of the documentary. This is hooliganism,” AISA JNU president Qasim said.

The protest was organised by the JNU Students’ Union. The protestors marched from Ganga dhaba to Chandrabhaga hostel inside the JNU campus.

On Tuesday, students, who gathered at the JNU students’ Union office for the screening of the controversial BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the 2002 Gujarat riots, claimed the varsity administration cut power and internet to stop the event, and staged a protest after stones were thrown on them.

They claimed that they were attacked when they were watching the documentary on their mobile-phones as the screening could not be held. Some alleged that the attackers were members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), a charge the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh-affiliated student body denied.

UP: Police deployed after protest against Pathaan by right-wing

    [ad_1]

Sitapur: The district administration on Wednesday deployed armed police personnel at a multiplex here, a day after a right-wing group held a protest here warning against screening the Bollywood movie “Pathaan”.

The new Shah Rukh Khan film was released on Wednesday in 5,000 screens across India. It had faced calls for a boycott over its song “Besharam Rang”.

Hundred of workers of the Rashtriya Hindu Sher Sena, led by its district president Desh Deepak, staged a protest on Tuesday against the screening of the film, alleging that it hurt Hindu sentiments.

Following the protest, the administration had deployed PAC and police personnel in adequate numbers to avoid any untoward incident, police said.

The management of a multiplex here told that all the 10 shows scheduled here are housefull.

Circle Officer (City) Sitapur Rajkumar Rao said protection will be provided to multiplexs and additional force has been deployed because of the protest staged on Tuesday.

Guj: VHP withdraws protest against ‘Pathaan’ after removal of ‘objectionable’ content

    [ad_1]

Ahmedabad: The Gujarat unit of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Tuesday withdrew its protest against Shah Rukh Khan-starrer “Pathaan”, a day before its release, expressing satisfaction over the removal of “objectionable” contents from the film.

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has revised the “obscene song” and “lewd words” in the film and hence the right-wing groups will no longer protest against its release, the Gujarat VHP’s secretary Ashok Raval said in a statement.

“Pathaan” has been facing backlash for featuring actor Deepika Padukone in a saffron bikini in the song Besharam Rang’. Several leaders, including from the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, had sought a ban on the film, which is scheduled to release on Wednesday.

Talking to PTI, Raval claimed that in its recent circular, the censor board has made 40 to 45 corrections regarding songs, colour and clothes, which resolve the issues and hence, they no longer need to protest.

This was a victory of the Hindu community, he claimed.

The VHP leader in a statement said, “Following the Bajrang Dal’s protests against ‘Pathaan’, the Censor Board has revised the obscene song and unsavoury words in the film, which is good news. I congratulate all the activists and the entire Hindu community who fought this successful struggle for the protection of religion and culture.”

It is now up to the enlightened citizens to decide whether to watch the film, he said.

The right-wing groups had earlier threatened to stop the release of the film in Gujarat, while the state government had assured police protection to theatres following a representation made by multiplex owners.

Representatives of the Multiplex Association of Gujarat had last week met Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi in Gandhinagar concerned about the threat they had received from various groups.

Sanghavi had assured them support and promised to deploy policemen outside movie theatres for smooth screening of the film.

Earlier on Sunday, five activists of the VHP were arrested in Surat for rioting after they barged into a movie theatre and tore down posters of the movie. Similar protests were reported earlier.

The advance bookings for “Pathaan”, backed by Yash Raj Films, opened from January 20. The film is reportedly set to be released across India on 5,000 screens. It is the first Shah Rukh Khan film to have 6 am shows.

Hyderabad: ASEEM protest for implementation of wealth tax

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Members of the Association for Socio-economic Empowerment of the Marginalised (ASEEM) held a protest in Charminar on Sunday demanding the rich be taxed according to their wealth status in order to strip down wealth inequality.

As per reports, India is currently the home to the largest number of poor in the world. ASEEM said that the wealth and income disparity can potentially impact future growth and development.

S Q Masood from the civil society organisation spoke to Siasat.com, saying, “We need to understand that wealth tax is an important redistributive policy. We demand that governments all over the world should take steps to address the growing wealth inequality. We demand that the rich be taxed as per their income status, in other words, integrate the wealth tax policy into a larger fiscal policy framework.”

Masoor added that it is the corporate sector’s responsibility to work with governments in creating an equal and stable society for a stronger economy.

According to a report, there has been an enormous concentration of wealth and income in a few hands, more so at the time of recent COVID-19 pandemic. “Every counter in South Asia has a level of disposable income inequality high enough for it to be reducing per capita GDP growth by between 1% and 4%,” the report said.

India has the highest income inequality.

One of the main reasons for income inequality is disproportionate profiting, a highly regressive tax system, and a huge budget deficit.

  • Over 100,000 of Israelis protest against Netanyahu government

Over 100,000 of Israelis protest against Netanyahu government

    [ad_1]

Jerusalem: Tens of thousands of Israelis rallied in several cities on Saturday evening to voice their dissatisfaction over the government’s plan to make sweeping reforms in the country’s judicial system.

Israeli media quoted police as saying that more than 100,000 protesters arrived at the main demonstration in Tel Aviv. Smaller demonstrations were also held in other cities.

This is the second week in a row that massive protests are being staged against the government. The demonstrators said the reforms will weaken the courts and give the ruling coalition limitless power, Xinhua news agency reported.

The government, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said the changes are necessary in order to rein in the judicial system which has become “too powerful” in recent decades. They also said the Supreme Court often intervenes in political issues that should be determined by the parliament.

Netanyahu and his coalition partners have said they will continue to push for the reforms despite the widespread protests.

The reforms include allowing the parliament to override Supreme Court rulings with a simple majority. In addition, politicians will have greater influence in appointing Supreme Court judges.

  • Turkey condemns burning of Qur’an during far-right protest in Sweden

Turkey condemns burning of Qur’an during far-right protest in Sweden

    [ad_1]

Turkey has condemned a demonstration involving the burning of Qur’ans in Sweden on Saturday, further inflaming tensions between the two countries amid Stockholm’s Nato bid.

The protest in Stockholm, which took place under heavy police protection in front of Turkey’s embassy, gathered about 100 people and a crowd of reporters, Agence France-Presse reported.

Far-right politician Rasmus Paludan, who staged the event, gave an hour-long speech against Islam and immigration before setting fire to a copy of the Qur’an.

A day prior, Turkey’s foreign ministry summoned Sweden’s ambassador over the permission granted to Paludan’s protest. It was the second time Sweden’s ambassador to Turkey has been summoned this month, after having had to answer for a 12 January stunt during which a Kurdish group hung an effigy of Turkey’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, in Stockholm.

Earlier on Saturday, Ankara cancelled a 27 January visit by Sweden’s defence minister, Pål Jonson, intended to be a discussion about Turkey’s refusal to ratify Sweden’s Nato accession.

Turkey’s defence minister, Hulusi Akar, said the meeting was cancelled because it “has lost its significance and meaning”.

Jonson, however, announced the meeting had been postponed after talks with Akar on Friday at the US military base in Ramstein, Germany.

“Our relations with Türkiye are very important to Sweden, and we look forward to continuing the dialogue on common security and defence issues at a later date,” he tweeted on Saturday.

Prior to Paludan’s event on Saturday, Turkey’s foreign minister, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, called it a “hate crime” that could not be characterised as freedom of expression, and asked Sweden not to allow the “vile act” to take place.

The Stockholm protest was also denounced by İbrahim Kalın, chief adviser to Erdoğan.

“The burning of the Holy Qur’an in Stockholm is a clear crime of hatred and humanity,” Kalın tweeted. “We vehemently condemn this. Allowing this action despite all our warnings is encouraging hate crimes and Islamophobia. The attack on sacred values is not freedom but modern barbarism.”

Sweden’s government has sought to distance itself from the demonstration, with the foreign minister, Tobias Billström, condemning it on Saturday.

“Islamophobic provocations are appalling,” Billström tweeted. “Sweden has a far-reaching freedom of expression, but it does not imply that the Swedish government, or myself, support the opinions expressed.”

Turkey has proved to be an obstacle to Sweden and Finland’s historic application for Nato membership after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which marked a reversal of the Nordic countries’ decades of neutrality. Sweden and Finland have gained the approval of 28 Nato members so far, bar Hungary and Turkey.

In November, Hungary’s president, Viktor Orbán, said his parliament would ratify Nato membership for Sweden and Finland in early 2023. But Turkey is still holding back, demanding the extradition of people in Sweden it claims to have links to the Kurdistan Workers’ party (PKK) – designated as a terrorist group by Turkey, the EU and the US – or to banned cleric Fethullah Gülen.
