Christians protest against ‘attacks on churches’ in Delhi

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Members of the Christian community staged a protest at Jantar Mantar here on Sunday against alleged “attacks on churches, violence and arrests” in different parts of the country.

“We are being accused of forcibly converting people to Christianity. Churches are being attacked, our people are being beaten up and arrested. The community members are living in a constant state of panic,” Steven from Uttar Pradesh said.

He claimed that the country saw “525 cases of atrocities against the members of the community in 2021 and 600 cases in 2022”.

“In Uttar Pradesh, the number of such cases increased from 70 in 2020 to 183 in 2022,” he claimed.

Shivpal from Fatehpur in Uttar Pradesh alleged that the state police has been arresting people over allegations of forced conversions.

“We are not even allowed to pray in our houses. A few women were arrested for offering prayers during a birthday celebration,” he said.

One of the FIRs filed against the members of the community names an 11-year-old and a person who died in 2010, Steven alleged.

“Churches are being attacked and our community members harassed in Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and many other states. Cases are being filed against them on the basis of false charges.

We have come here to express solidarity with our brothers and sisters,” Poonam, who came from Delhi’s Punjabi Bagh, said.

  • For Statehood, Sixth Schedule, Ladakh Leaders Protest In Delhi

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance, an amalgam of trade unions, social, political and religious groups from Ladakh held protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on Wednesday.

The protest was meant to press for their four demands including full statehood, sixth schedule under Indian Constitution, job reservation, a separate Public Service Commission for Ladakh, and two parliamentary seats for Leh and Kargil.

“It has been four years and we cannot see any development happening in Ladakh even as we were promised development when the UT was made,” the protestors was quoted as saying by reports.

They said government’s ignorance towards the Ladakh forced them to reach the national capital as the development and safeguards and reservation for locals they expected didn’t come so far.

“We are concerned about our cultural identity, political representation as well as job security. LG and a few other bureaucrats can’t decide our future,” they said.

A protester said that they are disheartened witnessing young people not being able to gets jobs.

“The government has supposedly promised twelve thousand roles, but these are merely on paper. Over the last three years since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, the government has not been able to develop a plan for Ladakh,” he stated.

On January 26, Wangchuk, the Ladakh-based engineer turned innovator had announced a five-day long hunger strike at 18,380 feet high Khardung to invite attention of the BJP-led Centre to the demands of the people of Ladakh, including extension of sixth schedule of the Constitution and environmental protection form unchecked industrial and commercial expansion.

The Apex and Kargil Alliance objected to the composition of the High Powered Committee announced by the Ministry of Home Affairs and headed by the Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanad Rai to discuss safeguards for the Union Territory of Ladakh. They demanded their four points to be included in the agenda of the committee.

  • Pak court cancels bail of ex-PM Imran Khan in election commission protest case

Pak court cancels bail of ex-PM Imran Khan in election commission protest case

    [ad_1]

Islamabad: A Pakistani anti-terrorism court here on Wednesday rejected the bail of former prime minister Imran Khan for failing to attend the court hearing of a case linked to protests outside the election commission, a ruling which could lead to his arrest.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) activists staged a protest after Khan was disqualified by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in the prohibited funding case last year.

In October last year, Police launched a case under the anti-terrorism laws and the former premier was on interim bail in the case.

On Wednesday, Judge Raja Jawad Abbas of Anti Terrorism Court (ATC) in Islamabad remarked that Khan had been given enough time to appear before the court but he had failed to do so while his lawyer Babar Awan in his arguments urged the court to grant a one-time exemption from in-person appearance as Khan had not recovered from a gun attack of last year.

The judge refused to accept the plea and ordered that Khan should appear by stating that the court cannot give any relief to a “powerful person” like Khan which is not given to a common person.

Finally, the judge refused to extend the interim bail, leaving the 70-year-old cricketer-turned-politician, who survived an assassination attempt in November last year, vulnerable to police arrest.

The PTI leadership had asked party workers to stage protests across the country, including near the ECP, after Khan was disqualified over hiding details of party funding.

Separately, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) barred a banking court from passing any direction on Khan’s bail plea in the Federal Investigation Agency’s prohibited funding case against the PTI.

Last year, the ECP in the funding case against the PTI ruled that the party had received prohibited funding.

Later, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) registered a case against Khan and other party leaders as signatories/beneficiaries of the PTI account where the funds were parked.

At the previous hearing, the banking court had rejected Khan’s request for a virtual hearing and asked him to appear in person on February 15.

During the hearing on Wednesday, the court once again rejected the exemption request and instructed him to appear before the judge in person on Wednesday.

But Khan had approached the IHC with a request for virtual proceedings which in its order instructed the PTI chief to submit fresh medical reports and stopped the banking court from taking further action in the case till February 22.

Khan has been facing a raft of cases and once he jokingly remarked that the only case he was not booked so far was the “crime of dipping rusk in tea before eating them”.

Protest over categorisation of SCs spark tension on Vijayawada-Hyderabad highway

    [ad_1]

Vijayawada: A policeman was injured in stone pelting as a protest by Madiga Reservation Porata Samithi (MRPS) over the demand for categorisation of Scheduled Castes (SCs) turned violent on Monday.

MRPS workers had gathered on the Vijayawada-Hyderabad highway for a road blockade called by the organisation to demand that the Bill for categorisation of SCs be tabled in Parliament.

Holding flags and raising slogans, dozens of protestors had blocked the highway at Thotacharla. Police swung into action to remove the protestors. This led to a scuffle between the two sides.

As the tension mounted, some protestors pelted stones, injuring a constable. He sustained head injuries and was rushed to Nandigama government hospital

Police arrested several protestors and shifted them to the police station. Police personnel also entered houses in the villages to arrest those allegedly involved in stone pelting. This led to a strong protest by the residents.

Meanwhile, in Hyderabad MRPS founder and president Manda Krishna Madiga was placed under house arrest. Police did not allow him to leave his residence at Amberpet area in the city to prevent him from leading the protest on the highway.

MRPS has long been demanding that the Centre introduce a Bill in the Parliament for categorization of SCs into A, B, C and D groups. It is also urging governments of both the Telugu states to exert pressure on the Centre.

Alleging that some Scheduled Castes were cornering more benefits of reservation than others, MRPS says that categorization would ensure fair distribution of quota.

Assam: AAP holds protest, demands JPC probe into Adani-Hindenburg issue

    [ad_1]

Guwahati: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday staged a protest here, demanding a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe into the allegations of malpractices against the Adani group in the Hindenburg Research report.

Workers of the party tried to march towards the Assam BJP headquarters on National Highway-27 in the Basistha area but were stopped by the police around 50 metres away from the place.

“We picked up many protesters and took them in a bus to the designated dharna site at Chachal. They were released there,” a senior police officer said.

“We demand a JPC probe into the latest allegations of malpractices in Adani stocks,” an AAP member said.

The protesters also raised slogans against the ruling BJP and billionaire industrialist Gautam Adani.

Adani Group stocks had taken a beating on the bourses after the US-based Hindenburg Research made several allegations, including fraudulent transactions and share price manipulation.

The Gautam Adani-led group has dismissed the allegations.

The opposition parties have alleged that the meltdown in Adani Group shares is a scam that involves common people’s money as “LIC and SBI have invested in them”.

These parties have also been demanding a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe into the issue.

Hyderabad: Raja Singh leaves car Pragathi Bhavan in protest; detained

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Goshamahal MLA T Raja Singh was detained near Pragathi Bhavan on Friday when he arrived to hold a protest demanding his Bullet-Resistant vehicle be replaced.

One of the tyres of the bullet-resistant Scorpio assigned to the MLA was damaged on Thursday at Mangalhat when he was on his way home in the vehicle.

On Friday, Singh travelled in his vehicle to the Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao’s residence-camp office, Pragathi Bhavan, and left the car there. He was going away when the police detained him and forced him into their vehicle. The police dropped him off at the Telangana Legislative Assembly.

The BJP MLA is currently out on bail, which was given to him by the Telangana High Court after it quashed his imprisonment under the Preventive Detention (PD) Act in the Prophet remarks case.

Previously, Raja Singh’s vehicle developed technical snags forcing it to be taken for repairs. The MLA then also demanded the replacement of his car. Singh is provided with 2+2 round-the-clock security and a BR vehicle.
