Holi: DU female students protest against ‘curbs’ on movement

    [ad_1]

Women students at Delhi University’s Rajiv Gandhi Hostel for Girls (RGHG) raised slogans and protested on Wednesday against university hostel curfews that prohibit students from leaving the premises until 6 PM, due to Holi.

The section officer issued a notice on March 2 informing hostel residents that visitors would not be permitted on Holi and that they could only leave after 6 PM.

“Residents can only go out after 6 PM on 8th March. No guests/visitors will be allowed on the day of the Holi festival,” the notice stated.

Students expressed outrage at the movement restrictions, claiming that they were uncalled for and arbitrary. Women students reported being confined to dorms on International Women’s Day, which this year coincided with the Holi celebration.

Nevertheless, university authorities stated that the warning was provided every year and that students might leave after signing an agreement.

Students at the RGHG complex yelled chants in opposition to the transfer on Wednesday afternoon, alleging that the hostel’s gates were sealed to prevent students from leaving.

Hyderabad: Police disrupt YS Sharmila’s ‘silent protest’, detained

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The City police on Wednesday disrupted the ‘silent protest’ held by YSRTP chief YS Sharmila and her fellow party workers at Tank Bund.

YS Sharmila held the protest at the Rani Rudrama Devi statue located on the Tankbund road to commemorate International Women’s Day by wearing a mask on her mouth.

Speaking to the media she said: “The state has turned into a fill of land mines for women, planted in the form of crimes and atrocities. One never knows when they explode. For KCR only his daughter represents women and she has put the women to shame and disgrace by being caught in liquor scam,” she said.

They detained her immediately and moved YS Sharmila to her residence in Lotus Pond.

The YSRTP chief alleged that the ruling BRS leaders are engaged in crimes against women.

“KTR’s constituency witnessed rapes against minors. Hyderabad sees rapes in broad daylight. Dalit women are assaulted, killed in lockups but KCR won’t say a word. His assurances for women are fake. Where is the Bharosa app as flaunted by KTR? I checked myself and it’s defunct,” she said.

“Even the Governor was not spared and foul language on her by an MLC made way for his MLA seat,” she further remarked.

Kavitha’s protest on women’s Bill attempt to divert attention: BJP MP

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: BJP MP Arvind Dharampuri has alleged that BRS leader K. Kavitha’s proposed ‘dharna’ on women’s reservation Bill is an attempt to divert people’s attention from her involvement in Delhi liquor policy scam.

The MP from Nizamabad on Wednesday targeted the Member of Telangana Legislative Council after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) summoned her for questioning in the case.

Calling Kavitha’s proposed dharna in Delhi on women’s reservation Bill a farce, the BJP leader suggested her to convince her father and Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao to accommodate 33 per cent women in his cabinet.

“Aap chronology Samjiyea KCR govt. didn’t have a single woman in his cabinet from 2014-2018, for obvious reasons of Ms Kavitha’s hegemony in the party, who was an MP from Nizamabad then. After losing to BJP candidate in 2019 General Elections, subsequently becoming MLC in Nepotism quota & now evolving as a key conspirator in Delhi liquor scam, her sudden epiphany to fight for Women’s Reservation bill is just her futile attempt to divert people’s attention,” tweeted Arvind, who had defeated Kavitha in 2019 Lok Sabha election.

The BJP MP also slammed Kavitha for her statement issued earlier in the day after ED issued summons to her.

“Telangana never bowed down to anyone in the First or Recent Telangana movement, but now is bowing in shame before the Nation in the light of your involvement in Delhi liquor scam,” he wrote.

“Let me also remind the power mongers in Delhi that Telangana has never and will never bow before the oppressive anti people regime. We will fearlessly and fiercely fight for the rights of the people,” Kavitha had stated in her statement.

Arvind also reminded Kavitha that her community represents not more than one per cent of Telangana population but represents more than 22 per cent of the Telangana cabinet. “Kindly convince your father to accommodate 33% women in his cabinet to gain tiny sanctity to your farce agitation on Women Reservation Bill,” Arvind told the MLC.

Nagpur Citizen Forum holds protest under ‘Right to Pee’ campaign

    [ad_1]

Nagpur: The Nagpur citizen’s Forum held a protest today demanding an increase in the number of public urinals for women under the ‘Right to Pee’ campaign.

Nagpur Citizens Forum launched a ‘Right to Pee’ campaign to demand clean, safe and free toilets for the citizens on December 30, 2021.

Under this campaign, the ‘Nagpur Citizens Forum’ surveyed and examined the situation by visiting the toilets available in different parts of the city”, a member of the forum said.

Various members of the Citizen’s forum participated in the protest and raised slogans demanding better urinal facilities for women in public places from the government.

Advocate Smita Singhalkar, a Women Activist and a member of the forum said that unhealthy urinals might lead to various diseases and improper public urinals site often result in crimes against women and girls.

“The lack of adequate public toilets is a matter of concern. Women and girls are forced to use other people’s improper or private washrooms, which may lead to crimes such as rape or sexual harassment,” said Smita.

“It’s very important to provide better urinal facilities to females. Thus, on this women’s day, we demand to increase the number of better public urinals under the Right to Pee campaign from the Maharashtra government,” Smita added.

Informing about the surveys conducted in the rural areas, Smita said, “Even the schools that are present in the rural areas do have not proper washrooms and girls are forced to request the nearby people to use their washroom. Such kind of negligence may lead to crimes against these girls”.

She also said that their organisation filed a PIL a few years back but no specific or recognisable actions have been taken by the government. Also, it is necessary to increase the number of public toilets in the area and provide better facilities in the existing washrooms such as better gates, tap water, electricity, etc.

Further, they urged the government to take necessary actions in constructing hygienic and safe public toilets for women to avoid crimes against them.

Video: In Hyderabad, Cong women wear Smriti Irani masks; protest LPG price hike

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Demanding an immediate reduction in the commercial LPG cylinder prices, female workers of the Congress party donned masks with union minister Smriti Irani on them and displayed placards in protest.

On Wednesday, the prices of domestic cooking gas and commercial cylinders were hiked by Rs 50 and Rs 350.5 per cylinder respectively.

With this hike, the retail price of a domestic LPG gas cylinder in Hyderabad now becomes Rs 1155, while the price for a commercial cylinder is Rs 2325.

The youth congress led a rally to protest the price hike of domestic LPG gas cylinders. Women wore Smriti Irani’s masks and “Where is Smriti Irani”? slogans were raised.

“Earlier in 2014, when the price was Rs 410, Smriti Irani had come on the roads and staged a dharna, but today the price of a cylinder has tripled to Rs 1200, and she did not respond to it,” said Motha Rohit, a youth congress leader.

The Congress workers said that the Prime Minister is breaking the back of the common people by increasing the prices.

“The prime minister said that if we are given power at the centre, he will immediately reduce the price of gas and the price of essential commodities, but in the last 8 years, he failed to do so,” they said.

They said that the price hikes are burning the hearts of the people and demanded that the prices have to be reduced immediately.

“If the prices are not reduced immediately, people will come onto the roads and drive away every single Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader,” Motha Rohit said.

A relay hunger strike will be undertaken and it will commence at the district collector’s office at 11 am on Saturday, Jaleel said in a press release.

  • Congress stages protest against AAP, seeks Kejriwal’s resignation

Congress stages protest against AAP, seeks Kejriwal’s resignation

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Delhi unit of Congress on Wednesday staged a protest outside the office of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) here, demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot, alleging they were also party to the now-scrapped excise policy.

Delhi Congress President Anil Kumar said that the resignations of Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain prove that the Kejriwal government was neck-deep in corruption and scams.

The Congress alleged that under the Kejriwal government, Delhi has witnessed a Rs 10,000 crore liquor scam, Rs 4,288 crore DTC scam, premium bus service scam, class room construction scam, toilet complex construction scam, ration scam, oxygen scam during the Covid-19 pandemic, DJB scam and PWD scam.

Addressing the Congress workers, Kumar said that the resignations of his ministers Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain, which were quickly accepted by Kejriwal, were clear proof that Kejriwal was “the mastermind of the liquor scam and all other corrupt deals under the Delhi government”.

“Therefore, he should also resign as CM along with Kailash Gahlot, to enable a transparent probe into the liquor scam, to expose the entire corruption behind the liquor deal,” the Congress leader said.

The Congress alleged that Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot was involved in a Rs 4,288 crore DTC bus purchase and maintenance scam, about which Delhi Congress had submitted a 1,000-page complaint to the CVC (Chief Vigilance Officer) and CBI on July 13-14, 2021, seeking a probe, adding the CBI took cognisance of the Congress’ complaint to file a case.

He said that instead of removing Gahlot from the ministry, Kejriwal entrusted him with eight important departments, as “Gahlot was also a partner in Kejriwal’s various scams”.
