Pilot targets Gehlot again, renews demand for probe into ‘BJP corruption’

    [ad_1]

Jaipur: Making clear that he is not backing down from the stand he has taken against his own government in Rajasthan, Congress leader Sachin Pilot on Monday renewed his demand for a probe into alleged corruption during the term of the previous BJP government.

The former chief minister recently went on a daylong fast over this, defying the party’s central leadership even after it termed his proposed move “anti-party activity”.

Pilot target had appeared to be Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot — he criticised the Gehlot government for “inaction” in “corruption cases” at a time when the party is gearing up for the year-end assembly polls.

    MS Education Academy

Addressing a gathering in Jhunjhunu on Monday, the dissident leader stuck to his position.

“I am asking for action even today. It’s been a week now but no action has been taken,” he said, repeating his demand for “an inquiry against those involved in corruption.”

“Action should be taken if the evidence is found. It is the responsibility of all of us to give Rajasthan clean politics,” he said.

He said he will not compromise on the issue of corruption.

Due to his scheduled public events in Jhunjhunu and Jaipur, Pilot also skipped a meeting with All India Congress Committee in-charge for Rajasthan Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and state Congress president Govind Singh Dotasra.

The three are holding separate meetings with all Rajasthan Congress MLAs in the run-up to the polls. Monday was the turn of the MLAs from the Ajmer division, under which Pilot’s Tonk constituency falls.

In Jhunjhunu’s Khetri town, Pilot told reporters that an investigation should be carried out as soon as possible because the entire Congress, including Rahul Gandhi, has been fighting “corruption” by the BJP government at the Centre.

“In Rajasthan, elections are seven months away. You want an effective and transparent inquiry into all those scandals that broke out when the BJP was in power, and I think we should do it as soon as possible,” Pilot said.

“Be it Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh or UP, we have always exposed the BJP’s corruption,” he said.

Replying to a question over the inflation relief programme announced by Gehlot, he said, Pilot said he welcomed such relief schemes.

“But in politics credibility and what you say is also important. When we go to the polls seven months later, we will be told you made the allegations — either you were lying or you didn’t have enough courage (to follow through),” he said.

An MLA told reporters that he mentioned Pilot when he met party leaders during their interactions with legislators.

“I told them about the influence of Sachin Pilot in Ajmer. He has been an MP from Ajmer and there is a big number of his supporters there,” Masuda MLA Rakesh Pareek said

Pilot’s fast last week put the party’s central leadership in a quandry on whether to take action against him or not.

“If there is any issue with his own government, it can be discussed at party forums instead of the media and in public,” Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa had said in a statement the night before Pilot’s dharna.

“This is clearly anti-party activity,” he had then said.

Plea in SC for independent committee probe into killings of Atiq, Ashraf

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A day after gangster-politician Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf were shot dead under police escort, a plea was filed in the Supreme Court on Sunday seeking the constitution of an independent expert committee headed by a former apex court judge to probe the killings.

The plea, filed by advocate Vishal Tiwari, also sought an inquiry into the 183 encounters that have taken place in Uttar Pradesh since 2017.

Ahmad (60) and Ashraf, who were in handcuffs, were shot dead by three men posing as journalists when they were answering reporters’ queries while being escorted by police personnel to a medical college in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj for a checkup on Saturday night.

    MS Education Academy

Just hours before the shooting, the last rites of Ahmad’s son Asad, who along with one of his associates was gunned down in a police encounter in Jhansi on April 13, were held.

Uttar Pradesh Police had said on Friday that it has gunned down 183 alleged criminals in encounters in the six years of the Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath-led government and this included Asad and his accomplice.

The plea sought the creation of an independent expert committee to probe the killings of Atiq and Ashraf.

“Issue guidelines/directions to safeguard the rule of law by constituting an Independent Expert Committee under the Chairmanship of former Supreme Court justice to inquire into the 183 encounters which had occurred since 2017 as stated by Uttar Pradesh Special Director General of Police (Law and Order) and also to inquire into the police custody murder of Atiq and Ashraf,” it said.

Referring to Atiq’s killing, the plea said “such actions by police are a severe threat to democracy and rule of law and lead to police state”.

“In a democratic society the police cannot be allowed to become a mode of delivering final justice or to become a punishing authority. The power of punishment is only vested in the judiciary,” the plea stated.

The plea said extra judicial killings or fake police encounters have no place under the law.

When the police turn “Dare Devils then the entire rule of law collapses and generates fear in the mind of people against police which is very dangerous for democracy and this also results into further crime,” it stated.

RDX used in Pulwama sent from Nagpur, why no probe done yet, asks Congress

    [ad_1]

Nagpur: Making a sensational allegation, Congress’ Maharashtra President Nana Patole on Sunday said that the RDX used in the 2019 Pulwama terror strike was sent from Nagpur.

“I want to inform you all… The 300 kgs used in that terror strike was despatched from Nagpur. Who sent it, from where was it sent?” he asked.

Addressing a massive rally of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), Patole said that even a CBI inquiry was also ordered into the matter, but almost four years later, there has been no outcome of its investigations.

    MS Education Academy

Patole’s statement came with reference to the recent revelations made by former Governor of Jammu & Kashmir Satya Pal Malik that has created a huge political row.

At the rally, Shiv Sena-UBT President and former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray slammed the government of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis for duping the people of the state and diverting attention from the real issues confronting the masses.

“They are accusing me of discarding Hindutva… What is their brand of Hindutva, assaulting a woman and then threatening her with arrest, not lodging her police complaint,” said Thackeray.

He was recalling the attack on party activist Sonali Pawar-Shinde in Thane on April 3, followed by a huge protest march taken out by the MVA to the city Police Commissionerate the next day.

Attacking Bharatiya Janata Party Minister Chandrakant Patil for his remarks that “no Shiv Sainiks were present during the demolition of the Babri Mosque”, Thackeray hit back: “If there were no Shiv Sainiks, then was it your uncle (there)?”

Several AMVA top leaders like NCP state President Jayant Patil, senior leader Anil Deshmukh and others also gave fiery speeches at the second ‘Vajramooth Rally’ in the series of public meetings planned over the next couple of months.

Telangana: Patient dragged by feet in Nizamabad GH, probe ordered

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: In an incident that came to light after a video went viral on social media, a patient was seen being dragged by his attendants at the Nizamabad government hospital. The person who shot the video was heard saying that they had to drag him due to the lack of facilities in the hospital.

The video triggered a political slugfest between the ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and the opposition parties.

“Is this healthy Telangana? Is it corporate medicine to drag patients on the ground? Is the lack of stretchers and wheelchairs the creation of facilities? A poor regime that cannot even provide a wheelchair to a patient with a budget of Rs 11,000 crores. This is not the ‘Healthy Telangana’ you are talking about, this is ‘Unhealthy Telangana’ that the public is witnessing,” said the YSR Telangana party leader YS Sharmila.

    MS Education Academy

Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) chief Revanth Reddy shared the video on his Twitter account and asked whether this is the Telangana model that chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao was talking about.

“Isn’t it the height of negligence of the government to drag a patient in a Nizamabad government hospital like this?” he said in a tweet. He termed the incident a result of anarchic rule of the government.

Reacting to the viral video, health minister T Harish Rao ordered the district medical education (DME) officials to conduct an investigation.

According to reports, the patient’s relatives said that the former was unconscious and was kept waiting all night in the out patient (OP) department corridor. They alleged that the following morning, the patient was dragged into the room with no concern from the hospital staff.

In a press conference, hospital superintendent Prathima Raj said the patient was brought to the hospital on March 31 under the influence of alcohol.

“It was advised to the patient and his attendants to utilise the in house de-addiction in the hospital and they agreed to do so. We also provided a wheelchair,” said the superintendent.

She said that a hospital staff member, who was seen wearing the uniform, made the patient sit on a wheelchair.

“However, after sometime they dragged the him by the feet and some person shot the 10 second video,” the hospital superintendent said.

The BRS party members have shared another CCTV footage showing a wheelchair being given to the patient and pin pointed the opposition parties for spreading fake news.

The hospital has reportedly filed a police complaint on the person who shot the video.

Tribals forced to do ‘dandavat parikrama’: NCST launches probe

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) has launched an inquiry into allegations that some Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders in West Bengal forced tribal women to perform “dandavat parikrama” (circumambulation in a prostrate position) as punishment for joining the BJP.

The NCST has also issued a notice to the West Bengal Police, asking them to submit facts and an action taken report.

State BJP president Sukanta Majumdar had written to the commission on Monday, demanding an inquiry into the matter and strict action against those responsible.

    MS Education Academy

The NCST on Wednesday wrote to West Bengal Police chief Manoj Malaviya that the commission has decided to investigate the matter and that he submit “facts and information on the action taken on the allegations within three days”.

The NCST also said it will issue summons for personal appearance if the West Bengal Police chief failed to respond in stipulated time.

Majumdar alleged that around 200 people from tribal families in his Balurghat Lok Sabha constituency joined the BJP on April 6, which did not go down well with a section of the TMC leadership.

He claimed that TMC “goons” pressured those families and forced some of them to join the TMC.

In an example of “inhuman medieval period autocracy”, four poor tribal women were forced to do “dandavat parikrama” for about a kilometre as punishment for joining the BJP. They were later given the TMC flag in the district party office, Majumdar claimed.

A video of the purported incident is doing the rounds on social media, triggering outrage.

The state BJP chief said TMC leaders had earlier also made comments against President Droupadi Murmu.

Majumdar said such incidents cannot be tolerated particularly when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is doing everything to uplift the downtrodden and the President is a woman belonging to the tribal community.

Delhi liquor scam: YSRCP MP’s son tried to derail probe, ED retrieves chats

New Delhi: Raghav Magunta, son of YSR Congress Party MP from Andhra Pradesh’s Ongole Magunta Sreenivasulu Reddy, recorded false statement before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the Delhi excise policy scam and also destroyed crucial evidence to derail the probe, the ED has claimed in the charge sheet, a source said.

Magunta was placed under arrest on February 10 this year by the ED.

He was grilled at length and later the ED filed a second supplementary charge sheet naming him as one of the accused.

    MS Education Academy

The ED has claimed that Magunta recorded a fake statement under section 50 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The statement pertaining to his control of Magunta Agro Farms and Pixie Enterprises.

“It was a fictitious account which he told us. We learnt it during the course of investigation. We seized his phone, but he had deleted the entire data. It was crucial evidence which he destroyed. His intention was to derail the investigation,” said the source.

Later, the ED retrieved his chats with Buchi Babu from Babu’s cell phone. The ED source said that Magunta’s chats were intact in the phone of Buchi Babu while in his own cell phone there was no data, which proved that crucial evidence was deliberately destroyed. It was a crucial chat which the ED needed to prove the duo’s guilt.

“Magunta has changed his mobile phone multiple times during the period of commission of the predicate offence and later on. Most importantly the phone containing the data of the relevant period of scam has not been found,” the ED has claimed

  • Bragg sues House Republicans over ‘campaign of harassment’ amid Trump probe

Bragg sues House Republicans over ‘campaign of harassment’ amid Trump probe

    [ad_1]

    main trumpsurrender 0404 bragg3

The new litigation was filed in federal district court in Manhattan and assigned to Judge Mary Kay Vyskocil, a Trump appointee. It stems from the first subpoena issued in a sweeping House GOP investigation into Bragg’s office. Republicans launched their probe, led by Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), Oversight Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) and Administration Chair Bryan Steil (R-Wis.), while rallying to Trump’s side ahead of his indictment.

Vyskocil replied to Bragg’s lawsuit Tuesday afternoon, indicating that she would not grant his motion for a temporary restraining order. Instead, she ordered Bragg to serve the lawsuit on Jordan by 9 p.m. Tuesday and for Jordan and the committee to respond to the filing by April 17. Vyskocil said she would hold a hearing on April 19.

Meanwhile, Jordan and members of his committee will take their defense of Trump to a new height by heading to New York on Monday, ramping up their public pressure campaign against Bragg. And the Ohioan quickly took to Twitter to push back on Bragg’s suit.

“First, they indict a president for no crime,” Jordan wrote. “Then, they sue to block congressional oversight when we ask questions about the federal funds they say they used to do it.”

The three GOP lawmakers have also been quietly preparing for a potential court battle. They warned in a March response to Bragg’s office that they believed any subpoena would survive a “three-prong test” previously laid out by the Supreme Court that is meant to “determine the legal sufficiency of a congressional subpoena.”

Pomerantz told Jordan and the Judiciary Committee on March 27 that he would not testify voluntarily, citing an instruction he received from Bragg’s office earlier in the month. That instruction came in a letter, dated March 25, in which Bragg’s general counsel, Leslie Dubeck, told Pomerantz that the Judiciary Committee subpoena raised “concerns about federalism, state sovereignty, the limits on congressional power, and the purpose and legality” of the probe.

The battle over Pomerantz could also portend a more prolonged fight between House Republicans and Bragg’s office. Jordan sent a letter on Friday to Matthew Colangelo, senior counsel to the New York County District Attorney’s Office, requesting closed-door testimony. (He took a similar step with Pomerantz before issuing his subpoena.)

And Jordan hasn’t ruled out subpoenaing Bragg himself. Judiciary panel staffers were already laying some of the groundwork for that step, but their timeline is in limbo amid a volley of letters back-and-forth with Bragg’s office. Responses from the DA’s office have not ruled out cooperating and instead pushed for more details on what the three GOP lawmakers would want to discuss as part of any sitdown interview.

Pomerantz began working on investigations into Trump under former Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. and continued after Bragg took office in December 2021. However, Pomerantz and a colleague abruptly resigned about two months later, with reports quickly emerging that Bragg had balked at launching the wide-scale tax-and-insurance fraud prosecution of Trump that Pomerantz favored.

Two months ago, Pomerantz released a book accusing Bragg of abandoning a winnable criminal case against Trump. Just before the book was published, Bragg sent the author and the book’s publisher, Simon & Schuster, a letter urging a delay and warning that Pomerantz had a duty to clear any manuscript about his work in advance with Bragg’s office.

The book was published as scheduled, and Pomerantz insisted he’d abided by his duties. “I am confident that all of my actions with respect to the Trump investigation, including the writing of my forthcoming book, are consistent with my legal and ethical obligations,” he said in a statement at the time.

Bragg never sued to block Pomerantz’s book or interviews he granted in connection with its release. However, the district attorney’s new lawsuit does seek orders forbidding the former prosecutor from complying with the House subpoena. It’s unclear whether the DA will ask the judge for a broader order that limits Pomerantz’s ability to discuss his interactions in the office.

Bragg also used his lawsuit to swing back at Trump’s attacks on him, noting that they led to threats to his office.

“Mr. Trump in particular has threatened New York officials with violent and racist vitriol,” Bragg’s filing states. “These statements have had a powerful effect. District Attorney Bragg has received multiple death threats. In one instance, he received a package containing suspicious white powder with a note making a specific death threat against him.”

Bragg’s lawsuit features a chronology of Jordan and the House Judiciary Committee’s public statements attacking the DA and bashing the investigation of Trump, which he says betrays the political nature of the GOP investigation. He contends that those Republican statements are evidence that the committee lacks a “legitimate legislative purpose” for probing his office — and is instead using it to punish a political adversary engaged in a criminal investigation.

To bolster that position, Bragg cites the Supreme Court’s decision in another Trump-related matter: Democrats’ yearslong effort to get the former president’s financial records from his accounting firm, Mazars USA. In its opinion, the court endorsed Congress’ sweeping power to investigate matters it plans to legislate, but acknowledged some limits on that power.

“The purported legislative purposes Chairman Jordan has invoked to support the subpoena are unsupported, speculative, specious, and/or unconstitutional. The subpoena is more broad than reasonably necessary to support any claimed congressional objective,” Bragg’s office contends.

But courts have long been wary of policing Congress’ investigative power, and even more loath to delve into the mindset of individual lawmakers who are pursuing politically explosive investigations. However, Bragg’s lawsuit may tie up Congress’ ability to garner testimony and information related to the Trump probe while it plays out in court.

Erica Orden contributed to this report.

Tejashwi to join ED probe in ‘land for job’ case today

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Bihar’s Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav is likely to join on Tuesday the Enforcement Directorate (ED) probe in connection with the alleged land for job matter involving his father and former Union Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav and other family members.

Tejashwi is likely to join the probe by 11 a.m. Earlier, he was questioned the CBI in the same matter on March 25.

On the same day (March 25) his sister and Rajya Sabha Member Misa Bharti was questioned by the ED.

    MS Education Academy

In March, the ED had come up on record saying unaccounted cash of Rs 1 crore, besides gold and incriminating documents were recovered during the raids which were conducted at 24 locations in Delhi, Mumbai, Patna and Ranchi based on on the specific intelligence inputs.

The ED had said that they detected around Rs 600 crore, which were Proceeds of Crime (POC), in the form of immovable assets of Rs 350 crore and transactions of Rs 250 crore routed through various benamidaars.

The ED said that PMLA investigation conducted so far has revealed that several pieces of land at prominent locations in Patna and other areas were illegally acquired by the family of Lalu Prasad in lieu of jobs provided in Railways. The current market value of these land parcels is more than Rs 200 crore.

According to ED, several benamidars, shell entities and beneficial owners for these lands have been identified.

“A property situated at D-1088, New Friends Colony, Delhi (registered in the name of A B Exports Private Limited, a company owned and controlled by Tejashwi Prasad Yadav and family) was shown to have been acquired at a value of mere Rs 4 lakh, while the present market value of the property is approximately Rs 150 crore,” the ED claimed.

An ED official said: “Huge amount of cash were infused in purchasing this property and few Mumbai-based entities, dealing in the gems and jewellery sector were used to channel ill-gotten proceeds of crime in this regard.”

“The property has been though, on paper declared as office of A B Exports Private Limited and A K Infosystems Pvt Ltd, is being exclusively used as residential premises by Tejashwi. During the searches, Tejashwi was found to be staying at this house and was found to be using this house as his residential property,” the ED alleged.

The official said that their investigation has found that four parcels of lands “acquired by the family of Lalu Yadav in just Rs 7.5 lakhs from poor Group-D applicants were sold to Syed Abu Dojana, Ex-RJD MLA by Rabri Devi with huge gains at Rs 3.5 crore in a collusive deal”.

The ED said that their investigation has further revealed that a major portion of the amount thus received, was transferred to the account of Tejashwi.

“Investigations revealed that in a similar fashion, lands were taken from several poor parents and candidates in lieu of Group D jobs in the Railways. It has been revealed during the investigation that in many Railways Zones, more than 50 per cent of recruited candidates were from Lalu Yadav families’ constituencies,” the ED said.

Further investigation into the case is on.
