Bhiwani murder case: VHP, Bajrang Dal seek ‘fair probe’

    [ad_1]

Gurugram: The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Bajrang Dal on Saturday submitted a memorandum to the President through the Gurugram district administration, seeking a CBI probe into the death of two Muslim men from Rajasthan whose bodies were found at a car in Haryana’s Bhiwani district.

The memorandum was accepted by ‘Naib Tehsildar’ Sushil Kumar.

“We demand a fair probe into the matter. Those named in the FIR are associated with the Bajrang Dal but whether they were involved in the crime or not is yet to be known. We also condemn the incident as extremely unfortunate and stringent action needs to be taken against those who are guilty,” Kulbhushan Bhardwaj, an advocate, said.

Criticising the Rajasthan Police, he said the name of Bajrang Dal was being dragged into the case due to “political bias”.

“The accused must be punished after ‘a fair investigation’ into the case. Two state police are involved in the case, so the matter should be investigated by an independent agency. Till the completion of the probe, no one should be nabbed,” Devender Singh, a member of VHP, said.

Telangana DGP orders probe into Khadeer’s custodial death case

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana DGP Anjani Kumar on Saturday directed the Inspector General of Police to supervise the probe of the alleged custodial torture-related death of Mhammad Khader who was picked up, by Medak police, suspecting his role in a theft case.

The 35-year-old daily wage labourer on Friday succumbed to the injuries he had sustained due to the alleged torture by the police.

The man was picked up from his sister’s house in Hyderabad on January 29 on suspicion of being involved in a theft case and was brought to Medak.

In a statement while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Medak, he alleged that he was kept in custody for five days and beaten up by policemen though he kept telling them that he was innocent.

“The cops said the person involved looks like me,” he said.

The police let him off on February 2 when he was unable to move his hands. They (police) asked him to tell others that he was kept in custody for one night. They also asked him to sign a paper and as he was unable to even hold the pen, one of the policemen signed the paper.

Khadeer named the two constables and the Sub-Inspector (SI). He said while the SI only slapped him twice or thrice, the two constables beat him up all over the body.

Due to the alleged torture, Khadeer could not stand on his feet, and his kidneys were also damaged. His wife Siddeshwari, alleged that police used third-degree methods on him. On February 9, he was admitted to a hospital in Medak.

As Khadeer’s condition kept deteriorating, he was referred to Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad for better treatment. However, he succumbed to his injuries on February 17 and is survived by his wife and two children.

The body was handed over to the family members early Saturday morning after autopsy and it was later taken to Medak for last rites.

Khadeer’s death triggered public outrage. Local Muslim community leaders urged Bharat Rastra Samiti (BRS) MLA M. Padma Devender Reddy to take action against the policemen involved.

Subsequently, the MLA spoke with the Medak Superintendent of Police (SP) Rohini Priyadarshini, demanding an investigation into the incident.

The SP transferred SI Rajshekar and the two constables, Pavan and Prashanth.

AIMIM MLA from Hyderabad, Kausar Mohiuddin visited Medak and attended the funeral on Saturday morning. He slammed the police for the restrictions imposed on the funeral and questioned if Qadeer was a “naxalite or terrorist”.

The MLA demanded that the three policemen involved in the case should be booked for murder. He said the FIR should be changed to include the names of the SI and the two constables.

  • Biden faces Republican probe into US troops’ withdrawal from Afghanistan

Biden faces Republican probe into US troops’ withdrawal from Afghanistan

    [ad_1]

Washington: US President Joe Biden seems to be the “Man on Fire” as he faces a Republican probe into the hasty withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan in August 2021 which led to the Taliban taking over Kabul and forcing the country’s former leader Ashfraf Ghani to flee amid utter chaos and panic amongst the people as anarchy set in.

The new Republican majority in the House of Representatives has demanded information from the heads of the Defence and State Departments among others on the rapid troop withdrawal and the situation that ensued to launch a probe against the Biden administration for losing a valuable ally in the region and causing humanitarian problems to the citizens.

The House Oversight Committee on Friday sent letters to top Biden administration officials demanding information about the chaotic withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan in 2021.

“The Biden administration was tragically unprepared for the Afghanistan withdrawal and their decisions in the region directly resulted in a national security and humanitarian catastrophe,” committee Chairman James Comer said in a statement.

“The American people deserve answers and the Biden administration’s ongoing obstruction of this investigation is unacceptable,” he was quoted by the media as saying.

The problem here is that it’s not the Biden administration that took the decision on withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan. His predecessor Donald Trump took the decision to withdraw the troops totally under pressure from public opinion that was building up since the draft of 18 year olds to fight a war in Iraq from distraught families who lost their young ones in a battle which served no interests to them. It was domestic politics that overruled geopolitics of the region.

Biden merely followed Trump’s decision to withdraw the troops but the hasty manner in which troops were withdrawn was perhaps a serious error as the US defence brass or the intelligence agencies did not anticipate the Taliban would regroup and overtake the city even so rapidly even as the US marines were being withdrawn, reports said.

Engaging US marines outside of the United States in the Asian region has always been a bone of contention between the government, the defence ministry and the people of America as citizens have felt it was highly improper to meddle in the internal affairs of another country for one and for another sending American troops to fight out the battles for the local people in other continents was not a concern of the US government.

There has been much public outcry not just in the US but also NATO allies in keeping troops in Afghanistan in a war not of their concern and the aftermath of the Taliban takeover has caused much consternation among politicians in not just US but also Europe. Like losing a base in the region. Pakistan is not a trusted ally as it harbours terrorists and there is a home grown Taliban in Pakistan causing much trouble to the Muslim state.

Comer issued the statement as he and the chairs of several subcommittees sent letters demanding records, documents and communications about the withdrawal to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, national security adviser Jake Sullivan, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and US Agency for International Development Administrator Samantha Power.

Twenty years of US engagement in Afghanistan after the Soviet Union quit, the Hezbollah and the Taliban, whom the US intelligence armed to oust the Russian forces, turned against the US itself like the Frankenstein’s Monster. US forces pulled out in August 2021. The mass evacuation of scared people and thousands of Americans and Afghan allies turned ugly as terrorists overran the airport that left 13 service members and hundreds of civilians dead, media reports said.

“US servicemen and women lost their lives, Americans were abandoned, taxpayer dollars are unaccounted for, the Taliban gained access to military equipment, progress for Afghan women was derailed, and the entire area is now under hostile Taliban control,” Comer said.

“Every relevant department and agency should be prepared to cooperate and provide all requested information.”

Comer complained that House Democrats never held a hearing on the withdrawal when they controlled the committee, although the House Armed Services Committee held a hearing on the topic in September of 2021 that had testimonies from Austin and Milley.

Blinken testified about the withdrawal before the House Foreign Services Committee, and multiple Senate committees held hearings as well.

Milley has gone on record to admit that the US was caught off-guard by the swift fall of the US-backed Afghan government. “We absolutely missed the rapid, 11-day collapse of the Afghan military and the Afghan government,” he said.

A US State Department spokesperson said it “does not comment on Congressional correspondence”, but “is committed to working with Congressional committees with jurisdiction over US foreign policy to accommodate their need for information to help them conduct oversight for their legitimate legislative purposes”.

The spokesperson claimed 150 briefings to lawmakers and staff on Afghanistan policy since the withdrawal from the strife torn country.

Nearly 2,500 service members and 3,800 US contractors were killed over the span of the nearly 20-year war, reports said.

Jamaat-e-Islami demands probe into Haryana killings

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) on Friday condemned the killing of Junaid and Nasir, both residents of Rajasthan’s Bharatpur, allegedly by cow vigilantes in Haryana and has demanded a probe into the matter.

In a statement, JIH Vice President Prof Salim Engineer said: “We unequivocally condemn the gruesome manner in which Junaid and Nasir were beaten, abducted, murdered, and burnt to death allegedly by cow vigilantes in Bhiwani, Haryana. According to the relatives of the deceased, the two were first badly beaten by 8 to 10 men and then kidnapped by their assaulters.”

He noted that the family members of the victims have blamed members of the Bajrang Dal and other cow vigilantes for the murder and abduction, and said that the Jamaat-e-Islami feels that such gruesome incidents of violence indicate a breakdown in the law and order situation.

“It is a reflection of the growing confidence of communal and anti-social elements in society that they will not be punished for their crimes and that they are free to intimidate and commit acts of violence against members of a particular community at the behest of their political masters. We demand an impartial probe into the incident and a statement from the Chief Minister of Haryana,” the JIH said.

    [ad_1]

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered setting up of a Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by Kanpur divisional commissioner and additional director general, Kanpur Zone, to probe the deaths of a mother and daughter during an eviction drive in Kanpur Dehat.

The SIT will submit an interim report in a week.

The state government also announced a relief of Rs 10 lakh to the victim’s family.

“For the proper treatment of the injured sons, an assistance of Rs 5 lakh each (total Rs 10 lakh) has been provided to the family by the government,” an official spokesman said.

Security has also been provided to the family by the government.

The incident has caused an uproar in political circles. Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had tweeted that the “spectacle of inhumanity on the bulldozer of the BJP government has become a threat to humanity and sensitivity”.

BSP chief Mayawati said that the Kanpur Dehat incident is being talked about more than the state government’s Global Investors Summit which was advertised so much. She said the BJP government’s policy to use bulldozers is meant to intimidate people and make them helpless.

“In a big state like UP, which has been hit hard by poverty, unemployment, inflation and backwardness, the government’s bulldozer policy is causing deaths of even the poor and the innocent. This is extremely unfortunate and condemnable,” she said.

Meanwhile, Rura police station in-charge Dinesh Gautam, accused in the case, under whose jurisdiction the incident occurred, has been suspended with immediate effect.

Principal Secretary (Home), Sanjay Prasad, said that Kanpur Divisional Commissioner Raj Shekhar has been authorised to select other members of the SIT in consultation with ADG, Kanpur, Alok Singh and complete the investigations in a stipulated time frame.

“Officials from Kanpur Dehat to Lucknow are in action on this incident that took place in Kanpur Dehat. In this sequence, the teams of the development and revenue departments will visit the site soon,” the official added.

These teams will complete the proceedings related to housing, old age pension and agricultural land lease there.

A total of 39 individuals, including SDM Maitha, the in-charge of Rura police station, four Lekhpals, a qanungo, a JCB driver, besides locals of Madauli and 27 unidentified persons have already been booked under murder and other charges in connection with the incident.

Police have also arrested the JCB driver. The JCB which was used in the demolition of the victims’ house has been seized, a police official said.

WASHINGTON — The FBI searched the University of Delaware in recent weeks for classified documents as part of its investigation into the potential mishandling of sensitive government records by President Joe Biden.

The search, first reported by CNN, was confirmed to The Associated Press by a person familiar with the matter who was not authorized to discuss it publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. The person would not say whether anything was found.

The university is Biden’s alma mater. In 2011, Biden donated his records from his 36 years serving in the U.S. Senate to the school. The documents arrived June 6, 2012, according to the university, which released photos of the numbered boxes being unloaded at the university alongside blue and gold balloons.

DOJ won’t charge Gaetz in sex trafficking probe, lawmaker’s office says

    [ad_1]

Gaetz’s congressional office on Wednesday also said that the DOJ confirmed to his attorneys that authorities have completed their probe and won’t charge Gaetz with any crime.

The news was first reported by CNN. POLITICO reported in September that the DOJ’s investigation was winding down and that prosecutors weren’t likely to file charges against Gaetz.

Officials at the DOJ declined to comment.

Speaking Wednesday night on “System Update,” a program hosted on video platform Rumble by Glenn Greenwald, Gaetz said the DOJ’s decision isn’t a surprise but is certainly welcome.

“While the two years haven’t been the most comfortable of my life, I have been very focused on my work here in Congress representing my constituents and never really looking past the task at hand,” Gaetz said.

Federal prosecutors and the FBI began investigating Gaetz in late 2020 during the Trump administration over potential sex trafficking crimes related to allegations he’d paid women for sex and traveled overseas on at least one occasion to parties attended by teenagers who were not yet 18.

Federal authorities also looked into whether Gaetz had obstructed justice due to a call Gaetz and the lawmaker’s girlfriend had with a witness. Exact details of that phone call are unknown.

Gaetz repeatedly denied having sex with anyone who was underage.

Gaetz has been a staunch ally of former President Donald Trump and frequented appeared on conservative media to defend the president. His national profile grew even more this year when he was part of a group of conservative Republicans who refused to back GOP Rep. Kevin McCarthy as speaker. In one notable moment, another Republican confronted Gaetz on the House floor and had to be held back by fellow members.

The investigation into Gaetz came in the aftermath of federal authorities charging Joel Greenberg, a Florida county tax collector who once was close friends with Gaetz. Greenberg was sentenced in December to 11 years in prison.

He had been charged initially with more than two dozen criminal counts, but in May 2021 he pled guilty to six — including sex trafficking and fraud — in exchange for his cooperation in multiple cases, including the probe in into Gaetz.

Greenberg’s sentencing was delayed multiple times as he cooperated with authorities.

Mother-daughter self-immolate: UP CM orders magisterial probe

    [ad_1]

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday ordered a magisterial inquiry into the death of a mother-daughter duo in Kanpur Dehat during an anti-encroachment drive.

It will be in addition to the probe by a Special Investigation Team which is already on, he said, adding the truth of the incident will come before the people in a transparent manner.

“The Kanpur incident is tragic. An SIT team is already looking into it. I have also ordered a magisterial probe into it,” the chief minister tweeted.

The chief minister also shared a video clip of his interaction with a private TV channel.

Replying to a question on the Monday evening incident in Kanpur Dehat district, Adityanath said, “The matter is sensitive and the truth of the incident will come before people in a transparent manner.”

He said everybody should wait for the inquiry reports.

Pramila Dixit (45) and her daughter Neha (20) died after they allegedly set themselves afire in a hut in the presence of police, district administration and revenue officials, who had gone to Madauli village in the Rura area of the district to remove encroachments from a “gram samaj” land, police had said.

While opposition parties alleged that the BJP government’s “arrogance of power” and “insensitivity” were responsible for the incident, Uttar Pradesh’s minister of state for women’s welfare Pratibha Shukla, who met the bereaved family on Tuesday, blamed the district officials.

Shukla said she was asked by the chief minister to visit the village and apprise him of the facts.

The Samajwadi Party on Wednesday said it would raise the incident in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly’s Budget Session – scheduled to start on Monday – to get justice for the victims.

BSP chief Mayawati said, “The ‘bulldozer politics’ of the BJP government is taking the lives of innocent poor people which is very tragic. The government should change its anti-people approach.”

Police have booked 39 people, including a sub-divisional magistrate, four revenue officials, a police station head and several other cops, on murder and other charges in the incident.

  • Adani row: Jairam Ramesh urges RBI, SEBI to probe allegations

Adani row: Jairam Ramesh urges RBI, SEBI to probe allegations

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has written to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das and Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) Chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch and sought an investigation into allegations of financial irregularities and stock manipulation against the Adani Group.

In his letter to Das posted on Twitter on Wednesday, Ramesh urged the RBI to ensure that “excessive debt exposure” by the Adani Group currently and in the future does not destabilise India’s banking system.

“The Adani Group has been described as ‘deeply over-leveraged’ – if the Adani Group has artificially inflated the value of its stock through manipulation by offshore shell companies and raised funds by pledging those overvalued shares, the recent sell off in stock prices is creating vulnerabilities for the Adani Group to find financing, and by implication for India’s banking system,” the Congress MP said in his letter dated February 14.

Ramesh called on the RBI to look into two aspects what is the true Adani Group exposure of the Indian banking system and what are the explicit and implicit guarantees that the Adani Group has been given that it will be bailed out by Indian banks if foreign funding dries up.

“Will the RBI ensure that Indian banks are not forced to step in to substitute for any shortfall in foreign financing, especially given the Adani Group’s political connections,” Ramesh asked.

Public sector financial institutions like the Life Insurance Corporation of India and the State Bank of India have been “unusually generous” to the Adani Group in recent years, the Congress leader alleged.

The RBI must ensure that risks to financial stability are investigated and contained, he said in his letter.

The risks of contagion from any collapse in the Adani Group’s ability to secure financing must be monitored constantly, Ramesh argued.

“As the steward of the financial system, the RBI must do everything possible to protect India’s banks and financial institutions, and we urge you to act in the national interest to ensure that India’s taxpayers do not pay the price for the ‘misgovernance’ and potential ‘illegalities’ of one influential business house,” he wrote to Das.

Ramesh also posted his letter to SEBI chief Buch on Twitter saying, many Indian citizens were disturbed by the allegations that the Adani Group has indulged in “brazen stock manipulation” and “accounting fraud” via a “vast labyrinth of offshore shell entities”.

“Apart from the potential violation of several Indian laws, this goes against everything that the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SBI) stands for. We urge you to investigate all potential violations and to ensure complete transparency about who is investing in Adani Group companies,” Ramesh said.

“Given the Adani Group’s size and political connections, it is incumbent that such investigations are seen as fair and complete, with no favour shown to the influential business group,” the Congress general secretary stressed.

Any failure to do so will cast a shadow on Indian corporate governance and on India’s financial regulators, and could affect our ability to raise funds globally, he argued.

In his letter, Ramesh asked why financial institutions of national importance such as the Life Insurance Corporation of India (IIC) and the State Bank of India (SBI) have “heavily bought” Adani Group equity when most private funds have been severely underweight because of concerns over corporate governance and indebtedness.

“LIC, which 30 crore Indians trust with their life savings, has lost thousands of crores in Adani Group stock in recent days. Should we not ensure that such public sector financial institutions are more conservative in their investments than their private sector counterparts and free from pressure from above?” Ramesh said.

The inclusion of Adani Enterprises in the widely used National Stock Exchange Nifty 50 index in September 2022 occurred despite the firm’s weak fundamentals, an excessive price-to-earnings ratio and a tiny free float, he alleged.

He further claimed that adding Adani Enterprises compelled supposedly conservative Nifty index funds to make significant purchases of this risky stock, including the Employees Provident Fund Organisation, India’s largest pension fund.

“In recent days, global stock indices have suspended Adani Group companies while the matter is investigated, but the NSE has failed to take any similar action to protect investors,” Ramesh said.

Is it not SEBI’s responsibility to ensure that index investors are protected from investing in questionable firms, he asked.

“We urge SEBI to play its role as the steward of India’s financial markets on behalf of the crores of Indians who have faith in the fairness of India’s financial markets,” the Congress leader said.

Ramesh shared the letters on Twitter and said that he has expressed the hope that a “full-fledged independent investigation will be carried on the numerous allegations against the ‘PM-blessed’ Adani Group”.

The Congress has been demanding a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe into the allegations against the Adani Group by US-based short-seller Hindenburg.

The Adani Group has dismissed the allegations as baseless.

U.S. detains 4 suspects in slain Haitian president probe

    [ad_1]

    ap23045749202982

“It is extremely important to bring [them] to justice,” said Markenzy Lapointe, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida. “We will deliver justice in the courtroom.”

A squad of former Colombian soldiers hired by CTU are among suspects who carried out the July 2021 attack, which authorities say originally was envisioned to be a coup rather than an assassination. The motives and ultimate masterminds of the attack remain unclear.

Tama Kudman, Veintemilla’s attorney, told The Associated Press that he would plead not guilty to both charges.

Claude Joseph, who was serving as prime minister when Moïse was killed, cheered the announcement. “Justice must prevail,” he tweeted, along with a picture of a U.S. government news release on Tuesday’s announcement.

Earlier this month, the president’s widow, Martine Moïse, who was shot during the attack but survived, called for the creation of a special U.N. tribunal to investigate the assassination, saying the case has faced obstacles for 19 months.

“The killers are out there,” she said.

A total of 11 suspects are now in U.S. custody, including key players like James Solages and Joseph Vincent, two Haitian-Americans who were among the first arrested after Moïse was shot 12 times at his private home in July 2021. Other suspects include Christian Emmanuel Sanon, a pastor and failed businessman whose associates have suggested he was duped by the real masterminds who have yet to be arrested.

Authorities have said that the original plan was to detain Moïse, force him onto a plane and whisk him to an unidentified location, but that plot crumbled when suspects couldn’t find a plane or sufficient weapons, according to court documents.

Sanon, who envisioned himself as Haiti’s new leader, was supposed to seize power, but the other suspects soon favored a former Haitian Supreme Court judge to take over instead. Police say the judge remains a fugitive.

A day before the killing, Solages falsely told other suspects that it was a CIA operation and that the real mission was to kill the president. Shortly before Moïse was killed, Solages yelled that it was supposedly a DEA operation so that the president’s security detail would comply.

Also detained are former Haitian Sen. John Joël Joseph, who had fled to Jamaica, and former U.S. government informant and Haitian businessman Rodolphe Jaar, who was extradited from the Dominican Republic.

As the U.S. investigation into the July 2021 assassination of Moïse pushes forward, the probe in Haiti is nearly idle. Three judges have stepped down from the case amid fears they will be killed and a fourth one was dismissed. Meanwhile, no court hearings have been held yet for the more than 40 suspects arrested in Haiti, with many of them including 18 Colombian soldiers languishing in a severely overcrowded jail in Port-au-Prince that often lacks food and water.
