  • James Shapiro wins Baillie Gifford anniversary prize with ‘extraordinary’ Shakespeare biography 1599

James Shapiro wins Baillie Gifford anniversary prize with ‘extraordinary’ Shakespeare biography 1599

    [ad_1]

A book about a pivotal year in William Shakespeare’s life has been named the Baillie Gifford Winner of Winners in a special announcement to mark the 25th anniversary of the prestigious nonfiction prize.

James Shapiro’s 1599: A Year in the Life of William Shakespeare originally won the award in 2006, when it was known as the Samuel Johnson prize. He has been honoured again at a ceremony at the National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh, and will receive £25,000. The chair of judges, the New Statesman’s editor-in-chief Jason Cowley, said it was a “poised and original reimagination of biography”.

In 1599, Shakespeare completed Henry V, wrote Julius Caesar and As You Like It, and produced the first draft of Hamlet. In his book, Shapiro, who is professor of English at Columbia University, looks at how the political and social context of the time influenced the work.

Cowley was joined on the panel by Shahidha Bari and Sarah Churchwell, both authors and academics, and biographer Frances Wilson. Churchwell said Shapiro’s book had made her “look at four major plays in totally different ways; that is an extraordinary achievement”.

1599 was chosen from a shortlist of six that also included Craig Brown’s 2020 winner One Two Three Four: The Beatles in Time, Wade Davis’s Into the Silence: The Great War, Mallory and the Conquest of Everest, which won the prize in 2012, Barbara Demick’s Nothing to Envy: Real Lives in North Korea, which won in 2010, 2021 winner Empire of Pain by Patrick Radden Keefe and Margaret MacMillan’s 2002 winner Paris 1919, which was originally published under the name Peacemakers.

The prize has been won by 16 men, including one person of colour, and eight women in its history. This gender balance was reflected in the shortlist for the Winner of Winners. Churchwell said the fact that Shapiro was a white man writing about a white author wasn’t something that the judging panel would hold against it, given that it was “a remarkable book”. But she said the judges did discuss the prize’s historical bias – which reflected the landscape of nonfiction publishing – saying the “vast majority of the [previously winning] books were by white men about western themes and subjects”.

“Over time the prize has been reflecting that changing sense of values and perspectives,” she added. “There have been many more women who have won in recent years; it’s still an overwhelmingly white cohort of winners.”

Churchwell said each book had to be judged on its merits, but added: “We also had to recognise there were structural inequalities, in bookselling, in publishing, over the last 25 years that were being reflected.”

In 2022 the prize was won by author and academic Katherine Rundell for Super-Infinite: The Transformations of John Donne, who was up against four other women and one man on the shortlist.

Earlier this year, the Women’s Prize Trust announced it would be launching a nonfiction award to sit alongside its long-running fiction prize, after research found that female nonfiction writers are less likely to be reviewed or win prizes than their male counterparts.

  • Modi a contender for Peace Prize? ‘Fake news’, says Nobel committee member

Modi a contender for Peace Prize? ‘Fake news’, says Nobel committee member

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Following several reports stating that Primi Minister Narendra Modi was the frontrunner for the Nobel Peace Prize, Deputy leader of the Norwegian Nobel committee Asle Toje on Thursday rubbished all claims.

Earlier on Thursday, an ‘exclusive’ report by Times Now claimed that Toje had termed PM Modi as the biggest contender for the Nobel Peace Prize which was then reported by several media outlets. However, the same evening, Toje in a video interview made it clear that he categorically made no such statement.

“It’s fake. Let’s not give it energy or oxygen. I categorically deny that I said anything resembling,” what is being reported, said Asle Toje clarifying he said nothing resembling what was being reported.

In the interview with Times Now, Toje appreciating the court had stated, “India’s intervention to remind Russia of the consequences of using Nuclear weapons was very helpful…We need more of that in International politics”.

“PM Modi has intervened on a positive note in the Ukraine crisis, warning Russia against using Nuclear weapons. I think any responsible leader in the world should give this message. It is all the more important when it comes from an important country like India,” he said while appreciating the Prime Minister.

He said that Modi, who has been India’s prime minister for almost nine years now, is an elder statesman in world politics. “It is interesting to see that India has, in record time, gone from being a developing country to becoming one of the primary economies of this world,” he added.

Toje said, “When India speaks, it tends to be with a friendly voice and without threat”.

  • Indian-origin teen wins USD 250K US science prize

Indian-origin teen wins USD 250K US science prize

    [ad_1]

New York: An Indian-origin teen has won a prestigious high schoolers’ science prize of $250,000 for developing a computer model to predict the structure of RNA molecules that can aid in quickly diagnosing diseases.

Neel Moudgal, 17, was announced the winner of the Regeneron Science Talent competition on Tuesday.

Ambika Grover, 17, was ranked sixth for an $80,000 award and Siddhu Pachipala, 18, placed ninth for a $50,000 prize.

About 2,000 high school students competed in the Science Talent Search with 40 selected for the final round.

According to the Society for Science that ran the competition sponsored by Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Moudgal’s computational biology and bioinformatics project “can rapidly and reliably predict the structure of various RNA molecules to facilitate the development of novel diagnostics and therapeutic drugs for diseases such as cancer, autoimmune diseases and viral infections”.

Grover developed an injectable microbubble to break up blood clots and treat stroke victims by restoring the blood flow to the brain.

Pachipala used machine learning to assess a patient’s suicide risk.

By analysing a patient’s journal entries the semantics in an individual’s writing could be correlated with their psychological health and risk of suicide.

Pachipala, who was chosen by the finalists as most exemplifying them, also was given the Seaborg Award.

The winners of the Science Talent Search programme originally sponsored by Westinghouse and now associated with the current sponsor Regeneron have gone on to win 11 Nobel Prizes and two Fields Medals for mathematics.

George Yancopoulos, the co-founder and president of the New York State-headquartered Regeneron, was himself the Science Talent Search winner in 1976.

That experience convinced him to work on curing diseases and added: “I can only hope this year’s students will be similarly inspired to become the next generation of scientists, engineers and innovators that will develop and advance solutions for the world’s greatest challenges”.

  • World Uyghur Congress nominated for Nobel Peace Prize

World Uyghur Congress nominated for Nobel Peace Prize

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The World Uyghur Congress has been nominated by parliamentarians from Canada and Norway for the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize for its contributions to human rights and shedding light on Chinese repression of the Uyghur people in the far western region of Xinjiang, according to a media report.

It’s the first time the Germany-based group has been nominated for the prestigious prize, RFA reported.

China has faced intensifying international criticism for treatment of the 11 million predominantly Muslim Uyghur people, whose culture, language, religion, dress and food is distinct from those of the Han Chinese majority, the reports said.

The United Nations’ human rights office had issued a damning report in August last year that highlighted widespread arbitrary detentions and other actions by China that it said may constitute crimes against humanity.

The United States, the European Parliament and the legislatures of several other Western countries have declared that the abuses, including the arbitrary detention of an estimated 1.8 million Uyghurs and other Turkic minorities, constitute genocide and crimes against humanity, RFA reported.

The World Uyghur Congress has “made a crucial contribution in drawing international attention to the overwhelming campaign of physical, religious, linguistic, and cultural repression currently being waged by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) against the Uyghur and other Turkic people in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China, a campaign that many parliamentarians define as genocide”, wrote Alexis Brunelle-Duceppe, a Canadian member of parliament, in the nomination letter, RFA reported.

Brunelle-Duceppe joined fellow Canadian parliamentarian Sameer Zuberi, who is the chair of the Subcommittee on International Human Rights, and Ane Breivik, leader of the Liberal Party of Norway, in nominating WUC.

WUC President Dolkun Isa said that it is a great honour for his organisation to be nominated for Nobel Peace Prize.

“This is despite China’s incessant demonisation to conflate our peaceful international advocacy for Uyghur rights with terrorism and separatism,” he told Radio Free Asia.

“Through decades-long global efforts to demonise the WUC, China has attempted to put roadblocks to our advocacy work and silence our voice in the world, thus continuing its ongoing crimes against the Uyghur people unabated.”
