Safety of Muslim women is priority for Modi govt, claims BJP

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party, which is campaigning across the country to connect with minority communities, especially the Muslim community, has claimed that the safety of Muslim women is the priority for the Narendra Modi-led Central government.

In an attempt to convey the message that the government has done a big and historic work of providing equal rights and security to Muslim women by declaring triple talaq illegal through Parliament, the saffron party on Tuesday took to its Twitter account depicting the entire sequence of events declaring the practice as illegal.

The video depicts the reactions of Muslim women along with the passing of the motion in the Rajya Sabha to declare triple talaq as illegal and the speech delivered by the Prime Minister from the ramparts of the Red Fort.

Claiming to have empowered and protected Muslim women, the BJP wrote in a second tweet: “Triple Talaq law empowers and protects Muslim women!”

The Triple Talaq Bill was passed in Parliament on July 30, 2019 making it illegal.

  • Second leg of Budget session from Monday; Govt says priority to pass Finance Bill

Second leg of Budget session from Monday; Govt says priority to pass Finance Bill

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The second leg of the Budget session will commence on Monday with the government asserting that its priority is to pass the Finance Bill and the Opposition planning to raise issues like the action of central agencies against the BJP’s political rivals and allegations against the Adani group.

Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge asserted that they want to play a constructive role in making the government accountable and sought a discussion in the House on “every burning issue facing the nation”.

Rajya Sabha Chairperson Jagdeep Dhankhar sought views of leaders of various political parties on ways to curb disruptions in the House at a meeting held on Sunday.

Opposition members raised the issue of alleged misuse of central agencies against non-BJP governments and the move to appoint Dhankhar’s personal staff on parliamentary committees.

The opposition parties will meet on Monday morning to evolve their strategy in both Houses of Parliament after protests by them on the Hindenburg-Adani issue overshadowed most of the first half of the Budget session.

Manickam Tagore, Congress Whip in Lok Sabha, told PTI that his party wants the Opposition to take a united stand.

“We will continue to raise people’s issues – price rise, LPG cost, Adani, misuse of agencies, farmers issues, governors’ intervention. We will continue to work with all like-minded parties. Tomorrow’s meeting is called for the purpose as we want the Opposition to be united.”

Congress leader K Suresh maintained that his party would continue to demand answers from the government on the Adani-Hindenburg issue as it has been keeping a studied silence.

The principal opposition party has been pressing for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe.

The opposition parties are also likely to vociferously raise the issue of recent raids by the CBI and the ED against their leaders, some of whom were questioned and even arrested in various cases. They have accused the BJP-led government at the Centre of misusing the central agencies to target leaders of the BJP’s rival parties.

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Arjunram Meghwal told PTI on Sunday that the top-most priority for the government is the passage of the Financial Bill.

He said discussions will be held on demands for grants of ministries including Railways, Panchayati Raj, Tourism, Culture and Health. Speaker Om Birla will later apply the guillotine, after which all the outstanding demands for grants, whether discussed or not, will be put to vote and passed.

“Then we will get the Finance Bill passed. After that we’ll look into the demands of the Opposition… the first responsibility of the government is to get the Finance Bill passed. Then we will hold discussions on issues the Opposition’s demands,” he said.

The session, which began on January 31, is likely to conclude on April 6. Parliament is meeting after a month-long recess which allows various parliamentary panels to scrutinise allocations made in the Union Budget for different ministries.

On Monday, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present Supplementary Demands for Grants – Second Batch for 2022-23.

She will also table the budget for the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir for the year 2023-24 in Lok Sabha. The UT is at present under central rule.

The two items are listed in the order paper of Lok Sabha for Monday.

Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha Kharge and Dhankhar also had a one-on-one meeting on Sunday.

“Met @VPIndia, ahead of the forthcoming session of the Parliament to seek his cooperation,” Kharge said in a tweet.

“We as Opposition parties are keen to play a constructive role in making the Government accountable and would want discussion on every burning issue facing the nation,” he said.

Kharge had on Friday accused the Narendra Modi government of making “sinister attempts to kill democracy” by misusing probe agencies against opposition leaders, as he slammed the Centre over the ED searches on the premises of former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad’s family.

The Samajwadi Party, the Left and the DMK were among those who protested against the alleged attack on the federal structure and the “misuse” of institutions.

The Trinamool Congress will raise in Parliament issues such as LIC and SBI’s risk exposure, price rise of essential commodities, unemployment and “misuse” of central agencies during the second phase of the session, its Rajya Sabha floor leader Derek O’Brien had recently said.

He said LIC’s risk exposure and price rise affect the lives of the common man and their savings and should be highlighted.

The TMC will also raise the issue of “political vendetta” against non-BJP ruled states in Parliament and also question the Union government on “holding back of funds for schemes such as MNREGA”, O’Brien said.

At the meeting with Dhankhar, several floor leaders raised the issue of the appointment of his personal staff on parliamentary committees.

The vice president responded by saying that the sole purpose behind the move was to achieve optimisation of human resources and the output of committees.

The staffers were not participating members of the committee and are just there to assist, facilitate and provide research material, he was quoted as saying.

Dhankhar, sources said, asserted that he was committed to improving the functioning of the committees.

At the all-party meeting, AAP raised the issue of alleged misuse of investigative agencies and the Adani-Hindenburg matter.

Its leader and former deputy chief minister of Delhi Manish Sisodia has been recently arrested by the CBI and the ED in cases related to the alleged Delhi excise policy scam. Former Delhi health minister Satyendar Jain is already in jail on charges of money laundering.

The opposition parties are also gearing up to corner the government on issues such as the China border row and unemployment.

People’s Interest ‘Top Priority’, Doors Open For Dialogue: LG Sinha On Property Tax

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: While reiterating stand on recently imposed property tax in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said “People’s interest is the top most priority of the government and has been duly taken care of”. He said the administration has issued a toll free number and people have been asked to put forth their suggestions if any as “doors are yet open for a dialogue”

Talking to media persons in Jammu, the Lieutenant Governor Sinha said “I do not speak on political issues. I reiterate that people’s concern is the top most priority of present dispensation. Their concerns have been well taken care of. The rate of tax in J&K is less than Ambala, Dehradun and Shimla”.

“There are 1,01,000 commercial properties in J&K out of which less than 40,000 are those who have to pay 700 rupees annually as property tax. Further there are 36,000 properties who have to pay 2000 rupees annually, which however is much less than states like Ambala, Dehradun and Shimla,” Sinha said.

“People’s concern is our priority. We have issued a toll free number to get feedback and suggestions from people, if any. Doors are yet open for dialogue,” LG Sinha said.

About uproar on APTECH Ltd. the LG Sinha said court has intervened into the matter who gave a verdict on yesterday. (KNS)

  • Our govt has accorded top priority to development of Karnataka: PM Modi

Our govt has accorded top priority to development of Karnataka: PM Modi

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday that the development of Karnataka has been a top priority of the ruling BJP whereas previous dispensations used to divert its money to outside the state.

He also said his government has worked for India’s progress by taking along traditions as well as technology.

“There was a time when people after forming government in Karnataka would take its money outside. Today, the country’s money and resources are honestly directed towards Karnataka’s development,” he said after inaugurating the “Barisu Kannada Dim Dimava” cultural festival here.

The prime minister said the state annually got Rs 11,000 crore between 2009 and 2014 when the Congress-led UPA was in power, while it has risen to Rs 30,000 crore under his government.

While the state received a total of only Rs 4,000 crore for railway projects in the five years preceding 2014, when Modi took the office, the amount in the latest budget alone is Rs 7,000 crore.

While nearly Rs 6,000 crore was spent on building highways in the state in the five years before he came to power, it is now Rs 5,000 crore annually for the last nine years, Modi said.

The face of Karnataka is changing rapidly due to the fast pace of development, he said.

Assembly polls are expected to be held in the state in May this year, and the BJP has been working overtime to retain power in the southern state.

The prime minister said his government has worked for India’s progress by taking along traditions as well as technology.

If it has rejuvenated ancient temples and cultural centres, then India has also become world leader in digital payment, he said.

His government has brought back stolen idols and artefacts while also drawing record FDI in the country, Modi said.

He also lauded Karnataka’s contribution in nation-building and paid tributes to its leading figures in different walks of life.

Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, several other BJP leaders, including Union ministers, and religious figures were present in the function.

Bommai said the state is rich in natural resources, culture and technology and will play a big role in realising Modi’s resolve of making India a USD 5 trillion economy.

Karnataka in the coming years will contribute a share of USD 1 trillion to the national economy, he said.

He also invited Modi to the “Akhil Bharatiya Vishwa Kannada Sahitya Sammelana” to be held next year in Davanagere district.

Chittoor: Andhra Pradesh Tourism Minister Roja on Wednesday alleged that Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Chief N Chandrababu Naidu and other TDP leaders were misusing the police.

She also claimed that her party honoured 14 backward castes by giving them MLC tickets.
Chandrababu is the only person who knows how to use the police system, she alleged.

“People are not in a position to trust Chandrababu and Telugu Desam Party. TDP will not get even a single seat in the next elections.

TDP leaders are making provocative comments in Gannavaram. After the 2024 elections, Chandrababu will be kicked out of Hyderabad,” she said.

She also said that although TDP leaders are cursing the CM . CM Jagan Mohan Reddy is always working for the welfare of the people.

“If TDP workers raise their mouths, we will answer them with our hands. The state stands first in ease of doing, GSTP,” she concluded.

  • Opinion | How to Make Climate Change a Bipartisan Priority

Opinion | How to Make Climate Change a Bipartisan Priority

    [ad_1]

    biden 95073

We simply cannot wait that long to pass additional climate legislation. The stakes are too high and the time is too short, especially in light of increasingly frequent and visible climate impacts. So relying exclusively on Democrats for continued climate progress would be a strategic blunder. Bipartisanship is the only assured path to decarbonizing at scale and speed.

Despite this reality, the climate movement has done far too little to lay the groundwork for bipartisan action. For years, philanthropists have poured money into progressive climate groups, while largely overlooking opportunities to engage right-of-center communities on this topic. The data bear this out. According to an analysis by Northeastern University, less than 2 percent of climate philanthropy has gone to engaging conservatives on climate change. On a very practical level, this imbalance misses an opportunity to build a broader tent and delays the elevation of climate as a bipartisan priority.

As former GOP congressmen eager to see further movement on climate, we know firsthand how difficult it can be to mobilize Republicans on this issue. Some of the blame lies within our own party, which has been too skeptical on climate action for too long. But without real engagement from the environmental movement, it becomes easy for our Republican colleagues to dismiss the issue as a liberal concern rather than a challenge confronting us all.

In its work on climate change, the Democratic Party is guided by a formidable civil society apparatus — including think tanks, grassroots organizations and more — that pushes, pulls and applauds Democrats as they act on this issue.

There is little equivalent on the right. The small assemblage of organizations that make up the “eco-right,” while growing, receive only a fraction of the funding that left-of-center groups do. If environmental leaders are genuinely committed to emboldening bipartisan action in support of increasingly ambitious policy, this must change. Far more resources need to be invested in building the kind of infrastructure that can rally conservatives to climate action.

Already, advocacy by the eco-right has demonstrated its ability to move the political needle. Just in the last few years, dozens of Republicans have joined the bipartisan Climate Solutions Caucuses in both chambers of Congress; the newly formed Conservative Climate Caucus in the House now includes a third of the GOP conference.

These efforts have also produced concrete legislation, including the bipartisan Growing Climate Solutions Act, which passed the Senate with 92 votes. Several other bills, including the Financing Our Energy Future Act, Restoring Resilient Reefs Act, Protecting and Securing Florida’s Coastline Act, and National Climate Adaptation and Resilience Strategy Act, have also garnered bipartisan support.

The Energy Act of 2020, which earned strong support from both parties, directs the EPA to reduce HFC gasses 85 percent by 2035. This measure will help limit global warming by a full half of a degree Celsius — one of the most significant climate actions in history. Additionally, the bipartisan infrastructure bill passed in the last Congress includes an array of low carbon and clean energy measures.

There are meaningful, bipartisan victories to be achieved for those who seek them. This requires an openness to market-based solutions and a deeper commitment to climate engagement across the political spectrum.

Especially as philanthropic commitments to address climate change grow — including a new initiative announced this year at Davos — right-of-center climate engagement must be a core part of the portfolio.

One important place to start is in red states, where climate organizing, especially by trusted messengers, has paled in comparison to the vigor and energy of advocacy in blue states. At the end of the day, lawmakers are responsive to the voters in their own states and districts. Only with a greater mandate to lead, in Republican and Democratic districts alike, can we create the conditions necessary for bipartisan action on Capitol Hill.

While climate change is a unique and paramount challenge, the laws of political gravity remain the same. Legislative outcomes are born from the political infrastructure supporting them. If bipartisan climate solutions are our goal, then we must build toward them.

From the nexus of climate and trade to pollution pricing to natural climate solutions, there are many promising areas for bipartisan progress. But unless the environmental community embraces this mandate, and dedicates resources and attention accordingly, we will fail to meet the responsibilities of our moment in history.

This is the environmental movement’s vulnerability, but also its opportunity. Building bipartisan routes forward on climate won’t be easy. But it is the work that can, and must, be done.

Education needs to be priority for govt, political leaders: Delhi Dy CM

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Youth must be inspired and provided with opportunities to become life-long learners, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said on Tuesday, asserting that education needs to be the priority for government as well as political leaders.

He was speaking at a conference — ‘Prayaas – Young Minds, New Possibilities’ — organised by Udhyam Learning Foundation with an aim to unlock the potential of India’s youth, a statement said.

“Indian youth holds the key to the nation’s advancement. Youth must be inspired and provided with opportunities to become life-long learners. Hear them and trust them as they will become the innovators who will change the world in the future.

“We as enablers, need to be more experimental in our approach and keep testing new models for educational transformation and bring them to scale for our country at large. Education needs to be a priority for policy, government and political leaders,” Sisodia, who is also the education minister, said.

Mekin Maheshwari, founder, ULF, said ‘Prayaas’ is an effort to unite like-minded people and organizations who care deeply about the lack of opportunities and pathways for India’s youth to realise their potential.

“The goal is to build a thriving and supportive ecosystem, where every individual feels empowered to define their own path,” Maheshwari said.

The statement said it said ‘Prayaas’ aimed to stimulate a “cohesive and collective” understanding of the current issues and instil a “sense of urgency” towards building new pathways for the youth of our country.

Change-makers, practitioners and leaders from over 120 of India’s top organisations including Delhi government school students, teachers and other independent people, took part in the event.
