Christian priest cremated in Indore after all-religion prayers

Indore: 70-year-old Christian priest was cremated in Indore on Tuesday evening after an all-religion prayer meeting.

Father Verghese Alengaden, founder of the Universal Solidarity Movement, was cremated at the electric crematorium at Rambagh Muktidham, an associate said.

Alengaden, who had undergone a heart surgery earlier this month and was suffering from a lung problem and other health issues, died at a city hospital on March 26.

“Before the cremation, Gayatri Mantra and Mahamrityunjaya were recited along with Christian prayers,” Neetu Joshi, a long-time associate of Alengadan’s, told PTI.

Before that, his mortal remains were kept at the city’s Red Church to enable people from different communities to attend an all-religion prayer meeting, he said.

“Alengaden never had any wealth in his name. He always said that after his death, he should be cremated in an electric crematorium instead of burying him because he did not want six-foot-long land to be occupied to build his grave,” Joshi said.

  • TN church priest held after nursing student complains of sexual abuse

TN church priest held after nursing student complains of sexual abuse

    [ad_1]

Chennai: A Church priest in Kanyakumari was arrested on Monday over alleged sexual abuse of a nursing student.

Based on a complaint from the nursing student, the Kanniyakumari police had registered a case against Benedict Anto but he was absconding since the past couple of days.

Sources in Kanyakumari police told IANS that he was arrested from a farmhouse in Nagercoil this morning.

Notably, scandalous videos of the priest exposing himself to women had gone viral on social media.

A few days ago, the priest was assaulted by a group of people and his laptop taken away. However, he did not file any police complaint against his attackers.

A couple of days after the laptop was seized, intimate scenes of Anto with young women appeared on social media sites.

The priest had earlier filed a false complaint against a youth, Austin Gino, and had sent him to jail.

Gino had earlier filed a complaint against the priest for having sent lewd messages and trying to sexually exploit a medical student who was a friend of Austin.

Anto had resigned from the post of parish priest earlier and will soon be replaced by another priest.

  • Kerala: Church priest counters Archbishop’s statement on supporting BJP

Kerala: Church priest counters Archbishop’s statement on supporting BJP

    [ad_1]

Thiruvananthapuram: Capuchin church priest and the editor of ‘Indian Currents’ weekly, Father Suresh Mathew, said on Sunday that Archbishop Mar Joseph Pamplany’s statement on supporting the BJP cannot be taken as the stand of the Christians in Kerala, though attempts have been made by Christian leaders to align with the saffron camp.

Pamplany, the Archbishop of the Roman Catholic church in Thalassery, had said in a public meeting that if the Government of India raises the price of rubber to Rs 300 per kg, the church will help the BJP in Kerala overcome the situation of not having a single MP from the state.

‘Indian Currents’ is the weekly online magazine of the Catholic church.

Speaking to IANS, Mathew said that many Christian religious leaders in Kerala do not have an idea about the ideology of the BJP, which is just the political face of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

A priest speaking against the Archbishop is uncommon in Catholic hierarchy. Capuchin is a congregation within the Roman Catholic church.

Mathew also said the ultimate intention of the RSS is to establish a Hindu Rashtra, adding that the teachings of the official church is never to align with any political party and individuals have the freedom to vote for whichever party they want.

The priest also said that no Christian would these days follow the diktat of priests and Bishops.

The ‘Indian Currents’ editor said that the Archbishop had spoken only for the rubber farmers of the state, while there are many other farmers in Kerala who are into cultivating cardamom, coconut, pepper, arecanut etc., and Christian leaders should demand fair price for all these products.

Mathew also said that those who cry for rubber planters must learn from the farmers of Punjab and Uttar Pradesh, who never said that they would vote for a party if the farm laws were repealed. Instead, the farmers of Punjab and Uttar Pradesh fought for their rights in Delhi for one year.

The Capuchin church priest then asked why the number of attacks on Christians have skyrocketed ever since the BJP government assumed office at the Centre, adding that the strategy of the saffron party is to woo the Christians in some parts of the country while blatantly attacking them in other parts.

Mathew also also asked if the beef issue’ is core to Hindu beliefs, why is it not part of the BJP’s election manifesto in some states.

He also questioned the reason for enacting anti-conversion laws when the Christian population remains stagnant in the country and hardly any conviction takes place in such cases.

    [ad_1]

Ariyalur’s district secretary of Vishwa Hindu Parishad Muthuvel has been arrested on Wednesday by the police for blackmailing a priest with Rs 25 lakhs.

According to reports, Muthuvel demanded Rs 25 lakhs from the priest Dominic Savio of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Ariyalur, Thanjavur district, failing which he would release videos to tarnish the latter’s image.

Muthuvel has been deeply engaged in Lavanya’s suicide case. The 17-year-old student from Sacred Hearts Higher Secondary School, Ariyalur, consumed poison on January 9 and died ten days later.

Before passing away, Muthuvel visited Lavanya in the hospital and recorded two videos of her. She said she took the extreme step as she was being forced to convert to Christianity. Allegations of torture after her refusal to convert were also raised by the girl.

The case created a political furore in DMK-ruled Tamil Nadu with the VHP and BJP leaders condemning the incident and blaming the state government for not putting a pin on the “blatant religious conversion” in the state.

On a plea filed by the girl’s father, the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court on January 21 passed an order to transfer the case to the CBI. The case is currently under investigation. However, on February 3, the state government filed an appeal in the Supreme Court challenging the order.

  • Temple priest confronts Kumaraswamy over his “anti Brahmin” remarks

Temple priest confronts Kumaraswamy over his “anti Brahmin” remarks

    [ad_1]

Gokarna: Days after his controversial statement that Union Minister Pralhad Joshi belonged to a sect of Brahmins, which lacks culture and divides society, a temple priest here on Wednesday confronted JD(S) leader H D Kumarswamy, expressing displeasure over his remarks, and urged him to clarify.

Akhila Karnataka Brahmana Mahasabha has condemned Kumaraswamy’s “anti Brahmin” statements and there are reports about protests condemning the JD(S) leaders from various parts of the state.

Facing criticism from the community, political leaders, especially the BJP, and various sections, the former Chief Minister clarified that his statement was misconstrued, and it was not at all directed towards Brahmins.

“Your anti Brahmin statement has very much hurt us…..please don’t be upset because I’m saying this. We have regards for your family….I have earlier spoken to Deve Gowda (former PM and Kumaraswamy’s father) here and felicitated him, later he went on to become Chief Minister, Prime Minister and you too became the Chief Minister,” the priest told Kumaraswamy, who visited the temple.

He said, “We are happy about your administration, but your recent comments have hurt us, I urge you to give a clarification to it here itself and go.”

Kumaraswamy told the priest that he wants to make it clear that he is not anti Brahmin, and did not speak about the Brahmin community. and he was referring to BJP and Peshwas. “We have great respect for the Brahmin community”, he said.

Noting that his comments have been misrepresented, he said, “We always respect the Brahmins who have the culture of saying ‘Sarve jana sukhino bhavantu’, and he was referring to those who had destroyed Sringeri math.”

Kumaraswamy had on Sunday claimed that the RSS was “conspiring” to make Pralhad Joshi the Chief Minister of Karnataka along with eight Deputies, after the assembly polls, and alleged that the latter belonged to a category among Brahmins, which lack culture and divides society.

Coming down heavily on Joshi for criticising JD(S)’ “dynasty politics” and its ‘Pancharatna Ratha Yatre’, he said, the union minister belongs to a Brahmin sect to which the Maratha Peshwas belonged and that had allegedly destroyed Sringeri Math, established by Adi Shankaracharya and desecrated the idol there, and also that killed Mahatma Gandhi.

Criticising JD(S)’ dynasty politics and alleged infighting in the first family of that party over ticket distribution, Joshi while addressing BJP’s special state executive meet had on Saturday said, “they are taking out ‘Pancharantna Yatra’, but instead they should have undertaken ‘Navagraha Yatre’, as 8-9 family members of party patriarch H D Deve Gowda’s immediate family are in politics.

Kumaraswamy after the temple visit, told media that he has been complimented by many for his statement and courage.

“People have told me that I have stated facts and something that makes people aware. Many Brahmin community people have complimented me,” he said, while listing out his contributions for the Brahmin community, when he was in power.

Hitting out at the ruling BJP, Kumaraswamy said, “What I have said is we don’t want Savarkar culture and DNA. We want the Brahmin community with DNA of Sarve jana sukhino bhavantu.”
