President Xi calls for quickly elevating Chinese armed forces to world-class standards

Beijing: Amid escalating tensions with the US, President Xi Jinping has called for more quickly elevating the armed forces to world-class standards as he stressed opening new ground for enhancing integrated national strategies and strategic capabilities of the Chinese military to win wars.

Xi, who heads the military besides the ruling Communist Party and the Presidency, made the comments on Wednesday during a meeting of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) delegates attending the annual parliament session here, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

He said that consolidating and enhancing integrated national strategies and strategic capabilities has profound significance in building a modern socialist country, as well as in achieving the goals for the centenary of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) in 2027 and more quickly elevating the armed forces to world-class standards.

“It is necessary to strengthen the orientation of defence science, technology and industries to serve the armed forces and win wars,” he said.

Highlighting the goal of maximising China’s national strategic capabilities, Xi told the PLA delegates that efforts should be made in integrating the strategic layouts, resources and strengths in all areas, in a bid to systematically upgrade the country’s overall strength to cope with strategic risks, safeguard strategic interests and realise strategic objectives.

Xi called for efforts to advance collaborative innovation in science and technology, with a focus on independent and original innovation, thus building high-level self-reliance and strength in science and technology at a faster pace.

Strategic capabilities in emerging fields must be bolstered in pursuit of new advantages in national development and international competitions, and the resilience of industrial and supply chains must be enhanced, Xi said.

He ordered the coordination of the construction of major infrastructure, accelerating the building of national reserves, and making the reserves more capable of safeguarding national security.

Consolidating and enhancing integrated national strategies and strategic capabilities must draw momentum from reform and innovation, Xi stressed, urging more progress on the issue.

He also called for efforts to foster a sound atmosphere of caring for, devoting to, building and safeguarding national defence among members of the public to pool strengths for consolidating and enhancing integrated national strategies and strategic capabilities and for building a strong country with a strong military.

A day earlier, President Xi said that western countries led by the US have carried out all-around containment and suppression, which brought unprecedented and severe challenges to China’s development.

On Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang also sharply criticised the US, saying Washington’s attempts to contain China’s progress will not succeed.

Referring to the recent incident in which a US fighter plane shot down an unmanned Chinese balloon flying over American airspace, he accused the US of violating international law, overreacting and abusing force in shooting it down.

The US perception and views toward China are seriously distorted. Containing and suppressing China won’t make the US great, and it will not stop the rejuvenation of China, Qin said.

President gives assent to Punjab, Telangana bills

    [ad_1]

Delhi: A Punjab bill which aims at giving property rights to more than 11,200 tenants occupying over 4,000 acres of land after paying due compensation has received presidential assent, officials said Thursday.

President Droupadi Murmu also gave her assent to a Telangana bill which allows the imposition of fines on people standing surety for securing bail in cases of grave offences if he or she fails to produce the accused on the date fixed by the court.

The Punjab Bhondedar, Butemar, Dohlidar, Insar Miadi, Mukarraridar,
Mundhimar, Panahi Qadeem, Saunjidar, or Taraddadkar (Vesting of Proprietary
Rights) Bill, 2020 was passed by the Punjab assembly when the Congress government was in power in 2020, an official said.

The legislation was later approved by the Aam Aadmi Party government.

The move allows property rights to more than 11,200 tenants occupying over 4,000 acres land after paying due compensation.

It is expected that the legislation will empower tillers of such land, who belong mostly to the economically and socially weaker sections of the society, another official said.

These tenants have been in occupation of small parcels of land for many years and inherit their rights by succession from generation to generation.

However, since they were not registered owners, they neither have access to financial institutions for loans nor get relief for any natural disaster.

Now, they will get all benefits like other land owners.

Iranian President orders probe into cases of schoolgirls’ poisoning

    [ad_1]

Tehran: Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has ordered an immediate investigation into the cases of reported schoolgirls’ poisoning in several cities.

Raisi on Wednesday issued the directive at a cabinet meeting, asking Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidito to remove parents’ worries and public concerns about the cases, according to the website of the President’s office.

Over the past three months, several mysterious poisoning cases have been reported in a number of girls’ schools in different Iranian cities, mainly in the northern province of Qom, Xinhua news agency reported.

The first case was reported on November 30, 2022, in Qom, where 18 schoolgirls were transferred to medical centres after displaying poisoning symptoms, the official news agency IRNA reported.

Later, other schools in Qom, the western province of Lorestan, the northwestern province of Ardabil, the western province of Kermanshah and even the capital Tehran also reported similar cases, the IRNA said.

As of now, more than 700 students in more than 30 schools across the country have fallen victim to such incidents, it added, noting in most of the cases, the students were released from the hospital soon after receiving treatment.

The IRNA cited Health Ministry Spokesman Pedram Pakaein as saying that the reported poisoning is “not caused by a virus or a microbe and the symptoms are transient”.

Mexican president: My nation has more democracy than U.S.

    [ad_1]

The Mexican president responded “there is more democracy in Mexico than could exist in the United States.”

“If they want to have a debate on this issue, let’s do it,” López Obrador said pugnaciously. “I have evidence to prove there is more liberty and democracy in our country.”

The Mexican president is notoriously touchy about criticism, whether it comes from human rights groups, non-governmental organizations, the press, or Mexican regulatory or oversight agencies.

Price said in a statement that “Today, in Mexico, we see a great debate on electoral reforms on the independence of electoral and judicial institutions that illustrates Mexico’s vibrant democracy.”

“We respect Mexico’s sovereignty. We believe that a well-resourced, independent electoral system and respect for judicial independence support healthy democracy.”

At the root of the conflict are plans by López Obrador, which were approved last week by Mexico’s Senate, to cut salaries and funding for local election offices, and scale back training for citizens who operate and oversee polling stations. The changes would also reduce sanctions for candidates who fail to report campaign spending.

López Obrador denies the reforms are a threat to democracy and says criticism is elitist. He argues that the funds would be better spent on the poor.

Tens of thousands of people demonstrated over the weekend in Mexico City’s main plaza, calling the cuts a threat to democracy.

  • Japan’s next BC president says he has ideas for exiting ultra-loose monetary policy – ISTOÉ DINHEIRO

    [ad_1]

By Leika Kihara and Tetsushi Kajimoto

TOKYO (Reuters) – Incoming Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda said on Monday he had ideas about how Japan’s central bank might exit its massive monetary stimulus, but a shift to tighter policy would only come when the country’s inflation tendency to increase significantly.

The central bank will reduce its bond purchases and is likely to move towards monetary policy normalization when sustained achievement of its 2% inflation target is in sight, Ueda said.

With inflation trending below the Bank of Japan’s target, however, the central bank is likely to stick to the current ultra-loose policy for the time being, he added.

“Big improvements must be made in Japan’s inflation trend for the Bank of Japan to shift to monetary tightening,” Ueda said.

“It’s not that I don’t have ideas on how to adjust the Bank of Japan’s current policy. But the desirable adjustment will vary depending on economic changes at the moment,” Ueda said, adding that it was premature to comment on how the central bank might change monetary policy.

For now, the Bank of Japan’s ultra-lax conduct was appropriate as the benefits of monetary policy, such as boosting growth, exceeded the costs, such as deteriorating market functions, he said.

“If the inflation trend does not pick up, the Bank of Japan should shift to a more sustainable monetary policy or an easing monetary framework that takes care of the cost of its stimulus,” Ueda told a confirmation hearing in parliament.

Ueda said he sees no need now to change the 2% inflation target or the central bank’s language in a joint statement the government signed in 2013 obliges the central bank to hit the price target as soon as possible.

He also said the Bank of Japan must watch out for an unwelcome rise in inflation, maintaining a commitment to continue increasing money printing until inflation exceeds its 2% target.

Upon parliamentary approval, Ueda will succeed incumbent President Haruhiko Kuroda, whose second five-year term as head of the bank ends on April 8.

  • I feel like an orphan: Jitendra Tyagi approaches President for euthanasia

I feel like an orphan: Jitendra Tyagi approaches President for euthanasia

    [ad_1]

Hindutva leader Jitendra Singh Tyagi posted a video on Twitter on Friday seeking permission from President Droupadi Murmu for euthanasia.

In the video, Tyagi alleges ever since he embraced ‘Sanatan Dharma’ in 2021, he has been receiving threats, harassment calls, and being charged in fake cases by clerics in UP.

Tyagi said he feels like an orphan because even after approaching several Hindu groups, including the RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) he has not received any kind of help.

“It’s been almost a year-and-a-half ever since I embraced ‘Sanatan Dharma’ and raised my voice against 26 controversial verses of Quran. Since then, I am unnecessarily being targeted by terror outfits and some hardline clerics who are framing me in false cases,” said Tyagi in a video statement issued on Friday night.

He added that even though he gets ‘assurances’ from his Hindu supporters, no one seems to take the matter seriously. ” I got only assurance from these groups that they would convey my plight to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and seek help, but nothing has been done so far,” he said.

“With no support from my Sanatan brothers in this hour of need, I have written to the President of India seeking euthanasia,” he concluded.

Jitendra Singh Tyagi alias Waseem Rizvi, was the former chairman of the Shia Central Waqf Board in Uttar Pradesh. In 2008, Tyagi was elected as a Samajwadi Party corporator from Kashmiri Mohalla, Lucknow.

In 2021, he claimed he saw Lord Rama in his dreams and decided to embrace ‘Sanatan Dharma’. He has since been a hard critic of Islam. He was booked for hate speech he made at the Dharm Sansad in Haridwar in December 2021.

He has produced controversial films like Ram Ki Jamnbhoomi and is now working on a web series on Quran.
