Portugal should apologise for role in slave trade, says its president

    [ad_1]

Portugal’s president, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, has said his country should apologise and take responsibility for its role in the transatlantic slave trade, the first time a leader of the southern European nation has suggested such a national apology.

From the 15th to the 19th century, 6 million Africans were kidnapped and forcibly transported across the Atlantic by Portuguese vessels and sold into slavery, primarily to Brazil.

But so far Portugal has rarely commented on its past and little is taught about its role in slavery in schools.

Rather, the country’s colonial era, which subjugated countries including Angola, Mozambique, Brazil, Cape Verde and East Timor as well as parts of India, is often perceived as a source of pride by most Portuguese.

Speaking on Tuesday at Portugal’s annual commemoration of the 1974 “Carnation” revolution, which toppled the country’s dictatorship, Rebelo de Sousa said the country should go beyond just an apology, though he did not offer up any specifics.

“Apologising is sometimes the easiest thing to do: you apologise, turn your back, and the job is done,” he said, adding the country should “assume responsibility” for its past to build a better future.

Rebelo de Sousa made the remarks after the Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who was in Portugal on his first visit to Europe since assuming the office, addressed the Portuguese parliament. Brazil gained independence from Portugal in 1822.

He said the colonisation of Brazil also had positive factors, such as the spread of Portuguese language and culture.

“[But] on the bad side, the exploitation of Indigenous people … slavery, the sacrifice of the interests of Brazil and Brazilians,” he said.

Europe’s top human rights group previously said Portugal had to do more to confront its colonial past and role in the transatlantic slave trade in order to help fight racism and discrimination today.

FIA president facing criticism over handling of alleged sexism

    [ad_1]

Mohammed ben Sulayem, the president of Formula One’s governing body the FIA, is facing fresh criticism following a claim of alleged sexism within his organisation. The Guardian understands the allegations were not taken seriously in what is the latest in a series of incidents considered poorly handled by Ben Sulayem which have led to widespread unhappiness with his leadership in the F1 paddock.

The Daily Telegraph reported on Tuesday that Shaila-Ann Rao, the FIA’s former interim secretary general for motorsport who left the organisation suddenly last December, had sent a letter to Ben Sulayem and to the president of the FIA senate, Carmelo Sanz de Barros, detailing instances of sexist behaviour at the FIA and also complained that the complaint was not investigated properly.

A senior source within the sport confirmed the existence of the complaint. The FIA, however, issued a rebuttal stating it took the allegations seriously and that it had followed procedures.

“With regards to the specific allegations surrounding Shaila-Ann Rao, due process was followed, with an amicable negotiation conducted by the president of the senate and, as such, no referrals were made to the ethics committee. As previously stated, both parties agreed she would leave her position in November 2022 and mutual privacy terms were agreed as is common business practice,” the statement read.

    Quick Guide

F1 makes key changes to sprint race format

    Show

Formula One has agreed to implement a new format for its sprint race weekends, beginning at this weekend’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix. With unanimous support from the teams the decision was confirmed at a meeting of the F1 commission on Tuesday.

The sport hopes the new structure will address the shortcomings of the previous format to encourage drivers to race harder in what will now be a standalone race on a Saturday.

The sprint weekend will now consist of a single practice session on Friday after which the cars will enter “parc fermé conditions”. Qualifying for the grand prix will follow using the current three-session format across an hour and deciding the grid for Sunday’s race and where pole position will be awarded.

Saturday morning will now host another qualifying session, which will be known as the sprint shootout. It will be run in the same three-session format but over a shorter time, across 12, 10 and eight-minute runs, with the intent on putting greater pressure on drivers to deliver their best lap. It will decide the grid for the sprint which will be a standalone race over 100km on Saturday afternoon and from which points will be awarded for the top eight, from eight points to one. Giles Richards

    Thank you for your feedback.

“With regards to the other allegations, there have been no complaints received against the president. Should the FIA ethics committee or compliance officer receive any complaint from a member of staff it will be dealt with in a comprehensive manner by our panel of independent elected ethics committee members which has been in place since 2012.”

The row is the latest in a series of controversies for Ben Sulayem that have caused confidence in the 61-year-old from the UAE to plummet. In relation to this latest altercation one insider told the Guardian: “He is, sadly, an open and running joke in the paddock.”

Ben Sulayem had already become embroiled in accusations of sexism when quotes he had made on his old personal website more than 20 years ago became public in which he stated he did “not like women who think they are smarter than men … for they are not, in truth”.

The FIA reacted to that by stating that the comment did not reflect the president’s current beliefs but Ben Sulayem made no formal statement or apology.

Ben Sulayem has become increasingly at odds with F1’s owners, not least after he made public comments questioning the sport’s commercial value, to which F1 reacted strongly with a legal letter, warning he had interfered with their rights in an “unacceptable” fashion. His initial objection to the increase in sprint races, supported by all the teams and F1, was contentious as was the FIA’s insistence on policing the letter of the law in relation to Lewis Hamilton wearing jewellery while racing. Both were agendas understood to have been pushed personally by Ben Sulayem.

The FIA’s investigation into the controversial decision at the 2021 Abu Dhabi GP which decided the championship that season was also dismissed as ineffectual, while its decision to clamp down on drivers expressing their opinions on social and political issues has been met with condemnation from within and without the sport.

Jaishankar joins Guyana’s President Ali at commissioning of India-made ferry

    [ad_1]

Georgetown: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar joined President of Guyana Irfaan Ali at the commissioning of an India-made ferry which would enhance connectivity and provide mobility and economic opportunities in the country’s distant hinterlands.

The ferry is truly a testimony of the close friendship between our two countries, Jaishankar said at the launch ceremony.

“MV Ma Lisha means friendship. The ferry made by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers in Kolkata is its practical expression. This ferry would significantly enhance connectivity within Guyana. It will provide mobility and economic opportunities for distant hinterlands,” Jaishankar tweeted.

    MS Education Academy

The vessel serves the dual purpose of being a passenger and a cargo ferry in Guyana. It can carry almost 300 passengers, 14 cars, two trucks, 14 containers and other assorted cargo.

He said it was important to look at the ferry and consider the larger context, which is that of the long-standing development partnership between India and Guyana.

“Our cooperation is human-centric, it reflects the priorities of the people and the Government of Guyana. Over the years our two countries have collaborated in several areas of interest, which directly impact the lives of the people,” Jaishankar said.

Some of the notable projects in Guyana include a cricket stadium in Georgetown, a Centre for Excellence in IT, modernisation of sugar plants and installation of solar traffic lights, he said.

“I want to underline today, that we remain committed to continuing to support Guyana’s developmental goals and to work with this country, on projects of its interest and priorities,” the minister said.

Cooperation in human resource development has also been an important feature of the bilateral ties. So far, 640 Guyanese nationals have benefited from India’s Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) programmes, which are designed to enhance skills and capacity building, he said.

“It would be India’s privilege to partner Guyana on our premier training institutions, universities and learning institutions. We would also be happy to work with Guyana to build a modern ecosystem of institutes for training and capacity building, to meet its growing requirements,” he said.

Jaishankar noted that the visits of both President Ali and Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo in quick succession to India have infused new energy in the bilateral relationship.

He also said that the arrival of the ferry and his own visit are milestones in ties and an indication that the two countries were moving to the next phase of their bilateral cooperation.

Jaishankar is on a nine-day trip to Guyana, Panama, Colombia and the Dominican Republic, his first visit as the external affairs minister to these Latin American countries and the Caribbean

Dairy has immense possibilities for growth: President Droupadi Murmu

    [ad_1]

Karnal: Dairy has immense possibilities for growth, President Droupadi Murmu said on Monday.

Chairing the 19th convocation ceremony at the National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) here, she conferred degrees on 544 students, including gold medals.

While congratulating the students, Murmu said with these degrees, a new chapter has been started in their life and each one of them should continue the streak of learning new things along with making significant contributions to the welfare of the people.

    MS Education Academy

The President urged the students to contribute significantly to the progress of the nation and become entrepreneurs along with getting employment in the dairy industry. There are immense possibilities for growth in this field and they should take advantage of these possibilities.

She said India is the largest producer of milk in the world. India accounts for about 22 percent of the world’s milk production. The dairy sector contributes about 5 percent to the country’s GDP and provides livelihood to 8 crore families directly and indirectly from the dairy industry.

With the participation of more than 70 percent, women are playing a significant role in the dairy sector.

“Women empowerment is playing a significant role in the management of the dairy industry. More than 70 percent of participants in the dairy sector are women. It is a matter of happiness that today more than one-third of the degree awardees are girls and 50 percent of the gold medalists are also girls. The dairy sector holds special importance in making women self-reliant and in bringing changes in their social and economic status,” she said.

Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatraya said the National Dairy Research Institute has a rich history of excellence in research and education in dairy science, animal husbandry and allied areas.

He said it is a matter of great pride that Haryana rakned second in terms of milk production in the country. “NDRI Scientists had achieved a new milestone by producing the country’s first Indigenous cow clone calf.”

He said the Indian dairy industry has immense potential to contribute to the economic development of the country and improve the lives of millions. With the right policies, investment and innovation, India can become a global leader in the dairy industry, and the time is right for a second white revolution, said Dattatraya.

Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said the government would provide loans to unemployed youth who are interested in running a dairy industry. This step will certainly prove to be resourceful in ensuring their contribution in milk supply to the country apart from giving them self-employment opportunities, he added.

  • German president asks for forgiveness on Warsaw Ghetto Uprising anniversary

German president asks for forgiveness on Warsaw Ghetto Uprising anniversary

    [ad_1]

Germany’s president has asked for forgiveness for the crimes his country committed in the second world war, on the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.

Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the first German president to speak at the commemorations in Poland’s capital, joined his Polish and Israeli counterparts to mark 80 years since Jewish insurgents’ doomed uprising against Nazi occupiers.

“I stand before you today and ask for your forgiveness for the crimes committed by Germans here,” Steinmeier said.

The German president also berated the Russian president, Vladimir Putin for waging war against Ukraine.

“With his illegal attack on a peaceful, democratic neighbouring country … the Russian president has broken international law,” he said. “This war brings immeasurable suffering, violence, destruction and death to the people of Ukraine.”

The official ceremony took place at the Monument to the Ghetto Heroes, which stands at the site of several of the uprising’s armed clashes.

The Warsaw Jews launched their armed revolt against the Nazis on 19 April 1943, preferring to die fighting than to be sent to a death camp. It was the largest single act of Jewish resistance against the Germans during the war.

“We must remember,” the Israeli president, Isaac Herzog, said. “Absolute evil existed in the form of the Nazis and their accomplices. And absolute good existed in the form of the victims and the rebels, from every nation.”

About 7,000 Jews are thought to have died in the battles and a further 6,000 in fires Nazi troops started in the ghetto.

“The revolt was suicide. We couldn’t win, but we had to do them harm,” survivor Halina Birenbaum, 93, said before the anniversary.

Earlier on Wednesday, church bells and sirens sounded across Warsaw as volunteers handed out paper daffodils for residents to pin to their jackets.

    skip past newsletter promotion

The tradition is in honour of Marek Edelman, a leader of the uprising who marked the anniversary by depositing a bouquet of daffodils, which resemble the yellow stars the Nazis forced Jews to wear, at the memorial until his death in 2009.

Paper daffodils are also being distributed in other Polish cities this year.

The Nazis set up the ghetto in a space of a little over three square kilometres (1.2 square miles) a year after their 1939 invasion of Poland. It was the largest of the second world war ghettos.

Many Jews died inside of starvation and disease, and most who survived were sent to the Treblinka death camp east of Warsaw.

At the outbreak of the uprising, about 50,000 civilians were hiding in cellars and bunkers in the ghetto. The Nazis put down the revolt with extreme brutality and set fire to the entire district, turning it to rubble and ash.

Nepal President Poudel hospitalised for second time in April

    [ad_1]

Kathmandu: Nepal’s President Ramchandra Poudel was admitted to a hospital here on Tuesday for the second time within a month after he complained of shortness of breath, a senior leader of the Nepali Congress said.

Poudel, 78, was taken to the Teaching Hospital in Maharajgunj, Kathmandu. According to Baikuntha Thapaliya, the hospital’s administration chief, President Paudel is undergoing treatment.

“We rushed him to the hospital after his oxygen level dipped. He has been taking antibiotics for 15 days but his situation has not improved,” one adviser to the president was quoted as saying by the Kathmandu Post newspaper.

    MS Education Academy

Prime Minister Pushpakamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ visited the hospital to inquire about Poudel’s health condition.

This is the second time President Poudel has been hospitalised within a month. Last week, the president complained of pain in his stomach.

A Cabinet meeting on Tuesday decided to deploy a team of government officials to facilitate his treatment.

The team will assess the nature of the president’s illness and report to the government, a minister said. Further decisions on the president’s treatment will be taken after the team submits its report.

Poudel of the Nepali Congress was elected as the new president of Nepal last month, in a relief to the fragile coalition government headed by Prime Minister ‘Prachanda’.

Poudel, a common candidate of the eight-party alliance that included the Nepali Congress and Prime Minister ‘Prachanda’-led CPN (Maoist Center), received the vote of 214 lawmakers of Parliament and 352 provincial assembly members.
