  • VHP issues legal notice to Congress president for defaming Bajrang Dal

VHP issues legal notice to Congress president for defaming Bajrang Dal

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Vishva Hindu Parishad has issued a legal notice to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, accusing him of making defamatory remarks against the Bajrang Dal in his party’s Karnataka poll manifesto and demanding a compensation of more than Rs 100 crore.

The notice was issued by the Chandigarh unit of the VHP and its youth wing Bajrang Dal on May 4, demanding the compensation within 14 days.

There was no immediate response from Congress on the queries sent to the party in this regard.

    MS Education Academy

In its poll manifesto for May 10 assembly polls in Karnataka, the Congress said it is committed to take firm and decisive action against individuals and organisations such as the Bajrang Dal and the Popular Front of India (PFI) “spreading hatred” among communities on grounds of caste and religion.

The action will include a “ban” against such organisations, the party promised.

“That in the manifesto at Page 10, you made defamatory statements against the Bajrang Dal, associate body of the Vishva Hindu Parishad by declaring to ban the organisation and comparing it to outlawed terrorist organisations like the Popular Front of India and similar terrorist organisations like Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) which are outlawed under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act by the Government of India,” VHP’s lawyer and co-head of its legal cell Sahil Bansal charged in the legal notice.

“The PFI and SIMI are terrorist organisations associated with Al Qaeda and ISIS and other global terrorist organisations proscribed by the United Nations General Assembly and by more than 100 nations as well as proscribed under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act,” he added.

Bansal claimed the Bajrang Dal “believes in universalism, tolerance, dharmic unity, national integrity and service towards Bharat Mata and in doing so seeks inspiration from the reverential example of Lord Ram and Lord Hanuman who are the ideal embodiment of Dharma and Service”.

The Bajrang Dal is “totally devoted to the service of dharma and in doing so devoted to the service of mankind”, the VHP’s counsel said, adding, “Unto that end the credentials of the Bajrang Dal are unassailable and unimpeachable.”

“That the defamatory statement which you made in the election manifesto and it’s subsequent release in general public is having a tendency to injure the reputation of my client, lower them in the estimation of others and bring them in obliquity contempt and ridicule,” he charged Kharge in the legal notice.

“My client demands special damages on account of injury inflicted to their reputation, honour due to the statement/averments, which you have made in the election manifesto,” he said.

The VHP counsel “advised” Kharge to pay a total of Rs 100.10 crore to the VHP and Bajrang Dal within 14 days of the issuance of the legal notice.

  • India’s image as vibrant democracy shouldn’t be tarnished: Vice President Dhankhar

India’s image as vibrant democracy shouldn’t be tarnished: Vice President Dhankhar

    [ad_1]

Dibrugarh: India is the world’s most vibrant democracy and its image cannot be allowed to be tainted or tarnished by anyone, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar said on Wednesday.

Some people are trying to tarnish India’s democratic image outside the country by spreading a false narrative that people do not enjoy their rights, Dhankhar said while addressing the 21st convocation of the Dibrugarh University here.

”When all is going well, why should some decry our democracy, talk outside as well as inside the country that we do not have democratic values? I dare say with confidence and without fear of contradictions, India is the most vibrant functional democracy on the planet on this date,” he said without naming anyone.

    MS Education Academy

He urged the students that they must find a way out so that such ”pernicious and sinister narratives are nipped in the bud”.

He appealed to students, youth, intelligentsia and media to act as ”ambassadors of the country. Believe in nationalism and run down this narrative”.

This is a narrative with no factual basis and ”we cannot support those who inside and outside the country, tarnish and taint our growth trajectory and democratic values,” the vice president said.

The Vice President also said that the Parliament is a “place for dialogue, discussion and debate” and not a place for disruption and disturbances.

Dhankhar claimed that such false narratives are emanating from a few universities outside the country, including in the United States, where some Indian students and faculty criticise their own country.

”You will find a few politicians who will trot around the globe and criticise their country but this is not India’s culture. Our former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee when in opposition was selected by then Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao to represent the country. This is our culture and we have to believe in our motherland and subscribe to the sublimity of our nationalism,” he said.
Though Dhankhar did not take any names, in the past similar allegations had been made by the BJP against Congress leader RahulGandhi for having criticised the government in lectures abroad.

Parliament is a place for dialogue, deliberation, discussion and debate and not a place for disruption and disturbances, the Vice President said.

He asked, ”How can we weaponise disruption and disturbances as a political tool? How can we allow this hallowed theatre to be polluted?”

It is time that an ecosystem is created so that Parliamentarians respond positively to the spirit and essence of the Constitution, Dhankhar said.

He said that India has emerged as the fastest-growing economy in the world and is now a favoured destination for investments.

”We are now the fifth largest global economy and what is indeed a matter of pride is that we overtook our erstwhile colonial masters. We hope to become the third largest economy of the world by the turn of the current decade,” he said.

The Vice President said that the year 2014 was a watershed in India’s political history with the nation being respected over the world.

”There has been a new mantra of governance which is less government and more governance’ coupled with visionary planning and execution,” Dhankhar added.

Bangladesh President seeks effective Indian assistance over Rohingya crisis

    [ad_1]

Dhaka: Newly-elected President Mohammed Shahabuddin on Tuesday urged India to take more effective steps in persuading Myanmar to take back the Rohingyas who were forced to take refuge in Bangladesh to evade persecution in the neighbouring country.

“The President made the request when Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pranay Kumar Verma met him at Bangabhaban,” a presidential palace spokesman told reporters here.

Shahabuddin, 73, was sworn in as the 22nd president of Bangladesh on April 24. He succeeded Abdul Hamid whose tenure ended on April 23.

    MS Education Academy

Verma paid a courtesy call on President Shahabuddin and conveyed to him warm greetings from President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and discussed recent bilateral developments, the Indian High Commission in Dhaka tweeted.

During the meeting, President Shahabuddin said that Bangladesh has sheltered the Muslim ethnic minority community for humanitarian reasons, and their prolonged stay is creating problems not only for the South Asian country but for the entire region, in an apparent reference to the escalating security risks including terrorism.

Nearly one million Rohingya Muslims fled a crackdown by Myanmar’s military in 2017 in Rakhine state and are living in camps in Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh.

India has always called for the sustainable and speedy return of displaced persons to the Rakhine state of Myanmar. India has worked with Bangladesh and Myanmar to resolve this issue.

Shahabuddin said Bangladesh attaches highest importance to its relations with India which is so closely linked by geographical proximity, shared history and sacrifices.

He termed the existing bilateral ties as “strong and unique”.

Shahabuddin, himself a Liberation War veteran, also recalled the training he received during his stay in India in 1971 during the independence struggle.

He said the prime ministers of Bangladesh and India recently visited each others’ capitals and their “visits have opened a new chapter in the relationship between the two countries”.

Shahabuddin said Bangladesh gave India access to Chittagong and Mongla seaport for transporting goods from the mainland to its north-eastern states. He expected the move would significantly cut time and cost needed to transport goods to India’s northeastern states and West Bengal and push regional connectivity in Bay of Bengal.

He also noted that Dhaka and Delhi signed the ACMP (Chittagong and Mongla Port) agreement in 2018 and the deal would accelerate the socio-economic development of the two countries along with the increase in trade and commerce.

The President hoped that the two countries’ unresolved issues, including the water distribution agreement, would be resolved soon through mutual cooperation and discussion.

The high commissioner said India attaches highest importance to the relationship with Bangladesh.

“Connectivity between the two countries has grown tremendously in the last one and a half decades. As a result, the people of both countries are enjoying its benefits,” Verma added.

“The connectivity between the two countries has increased manifold over the last 15 years. People of both countries are enjoying this.”

The Indian envoy informed his country’s appreciation for Bangladesh’s “Zero Tolerance Policy” against terrorism and said it resulted in stability in the region which is contributing positively to the economic development of both countries.
