    ECI begins preparation for Telangana assembly polls

    Hyderabad: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has started preparations for the 2023 Assembly elections in Telangana. A team of three senior officials led by Deputy Election Commissioner Nitish Kumar Vyas reached Hyderabad to review the arrangements. Commission officials met Chief Electoral Officer Vishwaraj and others.

    In the meeting, Nitish Kumar Vyas reviewed the inclusion and exclusion of voters’ names besides updating the voters’ list. He asked the office bearers to keep an eye on the voter list and ensure preparation of defect-free list.

    He directed the Chief Electoral Officer to prepare a list of returning officers across the state. A team of Election Commission officials directed the state officials to start the first phase of testing of electronic voting machines from June 1.

    Instructions have been given to organize a two-day workshop for District Election Officers, which will be organized by the Election Commission. Chief Electoral Officer Vishwaraj said that the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) have been placed in the districts after verification by the Electronic Corporation of India (ECIL).

    In 2018, the elections were held on December 7. For holding the assembly elections either in November-end or early December, the ECI will be issuing the election schedule a month before polling. The elections were held nearly six months before schedule, after BRS president and chief minister Rao decided to dissolve the assembly on September 6, about nine months before completing the five-year tenure.

    Election Commission officials suggested a training programme for officials of all levels of election duty. He said that maximum participation in voting should be ensured and the voting percentage should increase.

    The meeting was attended by Principal Secretary Election Commission of India Avinash Kumar, Under Secretary, Election Commission of India Sanjay Kumar, Joint Chief Electoral Officer Ravi Kiran and Deputy Chief Electoral Officer Satyavani.

    Hyderabad: Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) minister K T Rama Rao on Saturday conducted a review meeting of nala and other projects to assess the preparedness for the impending monsoon season in the city and across Telangana.

    The minister directed both the elected representatives and officials to diligently complete all pending tasks by June 1 to avert any possibility of flooding and inconvenience to the public.

    KTR reviewed the progress of the Strategic Nala Development Programme (SNDP), other ongoing works and their status.

    Members of the Legislative Assemblies (MLA) from Musheerabad, Amberpet, LB Nagar, Jubilee Hills, Kukatpally, Malkajgiri, Quthbullapur, Serilingampally and other constituencies participated in the meeting.

    He conducted a comprehensive inquiry with each of the MLAs to ascertain the status of SNDP works in their respective constituencies, addressing any obstacles or delays encountered.

    KTR urged the officials to take decisive action against agencies that are failing to meet deadlines, and emphasised the need to expedite any pending works, said a press release.

    He also instructed the MLAs to conduct regular site visits to ensure timely completion of the projects, holding both the officials and agencies accountable for their commitments.

    Visakhapatnam: After the successful conduct of the Global Investors Summit, the Andhra Pradesh government is gearing up to host the second G20 Infrastructure Working Group (IWG) meeting here on March 28 and 29.

    Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Visakhapatnam District Collector A Mallikarjuna said the theme of the second meeting will be ‘Financing cities of tomorrow – inclusive, resilient and sustainable’. The first G20 IWG meeting was held in Pune earlier in January.

    The two-day meeting in the city will be a part of India’s yearlong G20 presidency which will culminate with the summit-level meeting in New Delhi later in September.

    The District Collector said delegates from 40 countries will participate in the meeting along with central and state government officials. A pre-summit workshop will be held on March 23 and 24 in which secretaries from eight states will be in attendance.

    The delegates will arrive in the city on March 27 and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy will participate in proceedings on the first day of the meeting on March 28.

    On March 29, a health retreat programme will be conducted, while delegates will go on a tour of the city on March 30. From March 8 to 26, the district administration will organise several programmes including beach cleaning from RK Beach to Bhimili art contests for ensuring maximum participation from the city’s residents.

    Visakhapatnam Police Commissioner Ch Srikanth said the police department is taking all necessary measures to ensure security arrangements are in place for the delegates from the airport to the venue. He said nearly 2,350 police personnel will be deployed in view of the event.

    Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Commissioner P Raja Babu said the corporation will undertake beautification work with nearly Rs 100 crore allocated for the purpose, including repair of roads, laying new roads and installing lighting in the city.

    New Delhi: The preparation of the Delhi government’s budget for the next financial year is likely to be affected following the arrest of Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, who also holds the finance portfolio, sources said on Monday.

    The finance department is still in the process of finalising the budgetary allocations.

    “Various departments have sent their budget estimates, revenue utilised this year. The budget is not yet finalised. The allocations to various departments are still being finalised,” an official said.

    There were plans to present the budget around the second week of March but it might be pushed to the third or fourth week. However, it has to be presented before April 1, when the new financial year starts.

    Before Sisodia’s questioning by the CBI in the excise policy case, the deputy chief minister held a series of budget-related meetings, with Revenue Minister Kailash Gahlot also being a part of them.

    Sources in the Aam Aadmi Party said Gahlot may present the Delhi government budget this time.

    “As there was a possibility that the deputy chief minister may be arrested by the CBI, Gahlot was attending budget-related meetings for the last few days. Gahlot is likely to present the 2023-24 budget. It is scheduled to be presented next month. If Sisodia gets bail, he will present the budget but if he doesn’t, Gahlot might do it,” an AAP functionary told PTI.

    Sisodia was originally summoned by the CBI last Sunday but he sought deferment of his questioning citing the ongoing Budget exercise, following which, the CBI had asked him to appear on February 26.

    He was arrested on Monday and remanded to five-day CBI custody the next day.

    The Arvind Kejriwal government is staring at a possible crisis with the CBI arresting Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia who holds as many as 18 of the total 33 departments, including education, finance and home.

    The arrest of Sisodia comes after that of Satyendar Jain, Delhi’s the then health minister, in June last year. Both have led what the Aam Aadmi Party describes as the successful transformation of Delhi’s education and health services, contributing to the party’s popularity and continued electoral success.

    Their absence leaves Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal with no heavyweight lieutenant to implement his governance agenda in Delhi.
