    Met Predicts Wet Spell In JK From April 16

    SRINAGAR: Weather department on Saturday said that a fresh spell of intermittent light to moderate rain in plains and snowfall over higher reaches was very likely in JK during April 16  to April 20 with main activity on Monday and Tuesday.

    “During this wet spell, thunderstorms with strong gusty wind reaching (20-30KMPH) and hailstorms are also possible at some places of Jammu and Kashmir,” a meteorological department official here told GNS.

    This wet spell is due to the approaching of a fresh Western Disturbance over North India, he said.

    He said there is a possibility of temporary disruption of surface transportation especially over hilly and snowbound areas.

    There could be waterlogging in low lying areas as well as damage to orchards. “There is likely to be abrupt fall in day temperature by 7-8°C.”

    Regarding temperature, he said, Srinagar recorded a low of 9.1°C against 9.0°C on the previous night and it was 1.5°C above normal for the summer capital.

    Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of 6.2°C against 6.0°C on the previous night and it was 0.3°C below normal for the gateway town of Kashmir.

    Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of 4.6°C against 3.6°C on the previous night and it was 1.8°C above normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

    Kokernag recorded a low of 10.6°C against 9.4°C on the previous night and it was 4.5°C above normal for the place, the officials said.

    Gulmarg recorded a low of 7.0°C against 5.4°C on the previous night and it was 5.5°C above normal for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he said.

    In Kupwara town, he said, the mercury settled at 6.2°C against 5.6°C on the previous night and it was 0.1°C below normal for the north Kashmir area.

    Jammu recorded a low of 21.2°C against 20.3°C on the previous night. It was 2.0°C above normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.

    Banihal, he said, recorded a low of 9.3°C (above normal by 1.1°C), Batote 13.2°C (above normal by 2.7°C), Katra 19.4°C (2.9°C above normal) and Bhadarwah 8.9°C (1.9°C below normal). Ladakh’s Leh and Kargil recorded a low of minus 0.2°C and 3.3°C respectively, he said.

    Srinagar, April 5: Weather department on Wednesday forecast isolated very light rain and thunderstorm over Jammu division and fairly widespread light rain and thunderstorm over Kashmir valley in next 24 hours.

    A meteorological department official here told GNS that isolated to scattered light rain and thunderstorm was expected on Thursday and mainly dry weather thereafter for several days in J&K.

    Regarding the rainfall in last 24 hours till 0830 hours today, he said, Srinagar received 2.9mm, Qazigund 8.8mm, Pahalgam 10.8mm, Kupwara 2.8mm, Kokernag 4.2mm, Gulmarg 7.8mm, Jammu 0.0mm, Baniha 5.4mm and Batote 0.6mm.

    Meanwhile, the MeT official said that Srinagar recorded a low of 2.7°C against 6.9°C on the previous night and it was 3.7°C below normal for the summer capital.

    Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of 3.6°C against 6.4°C on the previous night and it was 1.5°C below normal for the gateway town of Kashmir.

    Banihal, he said, recorded a low of 5.7°C (below normal by 1.3°C), Batote 6.6°C (below normal by 2.3°C), Katra 11.5°C (3.0°C below normal) and Bhadarwah 3.2°C (2.4°C below normal). Ladakh’s Leh and Kargil recorded a low of minus 5.4°C and minus 1.2°C respectively, he added. (GNS)

    Hyderabad: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted rain or thundershowers in Hyderabad on Thursday and Friday evenings or nights.

    The city is predicted to have a partly overcast sky on Saturday, with the risk of thunder and lightning.

    The IMD also predicted that the city’s average maximum temperature will remain between 37 and 38 degrees Celsius for the following five days.

    A western disturbance is predicted to modify the weather patterns, causing mild to moderate scattered showers with isolated thunderstorms or lightning over portions of Telangana.

    Hyderabadis bear brunt of summer

    Hyderabad is having a blistering start to the summer season as temperatures soar across the city.

    Borabanda recorded the highest temperature of 40.2 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, pushing the mercury over the 40-degree Celsius level. Gachibowli was close second at 39.9 degrees Celsius.

    High temperatures of 38.9 degrees Celsius and 38.7 degrees Celsius were also recorded in Shaikpet and Miyapur, respectively.

    The weather continued scorching in other areas of the state, with Kanaipally in Wanaparthy recording the maximum temperature of 42.5 degrees Celsius.

    According to forecasters, the heat will persist on Wednesday, with sporadic showers bringing some relief.

    A meteorological department official here told GNS that partly to generally cloudy weather was expected on Sunday with possibility of a brief spell of rain and thunderstorm towards evening at scattered places.

    On April 3-6, he said, intermittent rain and thunderstorm was expected at many places. “Thunderstorm may be accompanied by strong gusty winds,” he said.

    The department has urged farmers to postpone spraying orchards and irrigating fields till April 6.

    The MeT department also urged commuters to confirm from traffic authorities the road status of various highways and roads before starting the travel.

    Regarding rainfall during the last 24 hours till 0830 hours today, the MeT official said, Srinagar received 5.2mm, Qazigund 1.6mm, Pahalgam 3.3mm, Kupwara 5.3mm, Kokernag 9.0mm, Gulmarg 3.4mm, Jammu 13.7mm, Banihal 7.8mm, Batote 14.1mm, Katra 12.8mm, Bhaderwah 13.8mm and Kathua 20.8mm.

    Meanwhile, the minimum temperatures recorded an increase at most places and settled above normal in J&K.

    The MeT official said that Srinagar recorded a low of 9.1°C against 7.9°C on the previous night and it was 2.7°C above normal for the summer capital.

    Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of minus 0.3°C against minus 0.6°C on the previous night and it was 1.9°C below normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

    Kokernag recorded a low of 4.2°C, the same as on the previous night and it was 0.4°C below normal for the place, the officials said.
