Skies clear as MeT predicts mainly dry weather in J&K

Srinagar, Jul 10 (GNS): After a few days of rains which brought Kashmir Valley on the brink of floods and caused inundation in parts of Jammu region, weather department here on Monday forecast mainly dry in J&K.
“Mainly dry weather is expected but a brief spell of rain may occur at isolated places in Kashmir region towards late afternoon/evening,” a meteorological department official here told GNS regarding forecast for next 24 hours.
As regards forecast from July 11-14, he said, mainly dry weather is expected. However, he said, brief spell of rain and thunderstorm at isolated places “can’t be ruled out (>70% chance)”. Intermittent light to moderate rain has been predicted at many places of J&K with chances upto 70% from July 15-24.
Regarding the minimum temperature today, the MeT official said that Srinagar recorded a low of 17.2°C against 14.9°C on the previous night and it was 0.9°C below normal for the summer capital.
Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of 14.5°C against 14.0°C on the previous night and it was 2.0°C below normal for the gateway town of the Kashmir Valley.
Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of 10.3°C against 9.6°C on the previous night and it was below normal by 1.7°C for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
Kupwara town, he said, the mercury settled at 15.2°C against 14.8°C on the previous night and it was below normal by 1.4°C for the north Kashmir area.
Kokernag recorded a low of 14.2°C against 13.1°C on the previous night and it was 1.7°C below normal for the place, the officials said.

Gulmarg recorded a low of 9.0°C against 8.5°C on previous night and it was 2.8°C below normal for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he said.
Jammu recorded a low of 23.8°C against 20.9°C on the previous night and it was 1.0°C below normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.
Banihal recorded a low of 13.3°C, Batote 14.4, Katra 21.3°C and Bhaderwah 14.3°C, the official said. (GNS)

MeT Predicts More Rains, Lightning As Night Temp Records Drop In JK

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir recorded major drop in temperature while as weather department on Sunday forecast more rain, thunderstorm, and lightning at most places of the Kashmir Valley and many places of the Jammu region during late afternoon and evening.
“Hailstorms with gusty winds are also expected at a few places,” an official of the meteorological department said.
On May 8, he said, rain and thunderstorm were expected at many places of J&K with the possibility of “hailstorms and gusty wind at one or two places.”
He said mainly dry weather was expected on May 9-12.
He advised farmers to postpone spraying of orchards and harvesting of crops till May 8.
Tourists have been asked to keep warm clothes and eatables ready as the weather will be colder till May 8.
Regarding temperature, he said, Srinagar recorded a low of 6.5°C against 10.4°C on the previous night and it was 4.2°C above normal for the summer capital.
Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of 5.2°C against 8.0°C on the previous night and it was below normal by 4.0°C for the gateway town of Kashmir.

Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of 2.1°C against 5.4°C on previous night and it was 3.4°C above normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
Kokernag recorded a low of 4.2°C against 8.2°C on the previous night and it was 5.0°C below normal for the place, the officials said.

A meteorological department official stated that there was also a possibility of light rain and thunderstorms at “scattered places” over the Jammu division during that time.
For the subsequent two days, the official said that fairly widespread light to moderate rain and thunderstorms were expected in J&K.

IMD predicts cyclone over Bay of Bengal around May 9

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday said that there is a possibility of the formation of a cyclone over the Bay of Bengal (BoB) around May 9.
A cyclonic circulation will form over southeast Bay of Bengal around May 6, which will convert into a low pressure area over the same region on May 7. The system is likely to concentrate into a depression on the next day, the IMD said.
“Thereafter, there is a good possibility of its intensification while moving nearly northwards towards central Bay of Bengal,” it said.

However, the IMD has not yet predicted its intensity, path and impact on Odisha coast.
Director General (DG) of IMD, Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said that there is consensus over the formation of a low pressure and its intensification into a cyclone by May 9.
“We have not specified its path and intensity and the area over the land where it is likely to hit. Once the low pressure is formed, we will provide detailed predictions regarding landfall and its intensity,” said Mohapatra, adding, “As of now, there is no such forecast for landfall over Indian coast.”
Initially, there will be squally weather and hence the fishermen should not venture into the southeast Bay of Bengal from May 7 onwards, he advised.
The DG made it clear that no alert has been issued for the Odisha coast and there is no forecast about the likely impact of the system on Odisha.

Mohapatra urged people not to panic about a possible cyclone but remain prepared to face any eventuality.
The last summer cyclonic storm ‘Fani’ had made landfall over the Odisha coast near Puri on May 3, 2019. It had caused wide-spread devastation in coastal Odisha including capital Bhubaneswar.
