  • Geologist’s Red Sea earthquake prediction dismissed as ‘personal opinions’

Geologist’s Red Sea earthquake prediction dismissed as ‘personal opinions’

    [ad_1]

Authorities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) have dismissed predictions about a potential quake in the Red Sea by a prominent Saudi geologist as ‘mere personal opinions’.

The warning comes after tens of thousands of people were killed in Turkey and neighboring Syria by the quake, which caused widespread destruction and sparked a large-scale international relief effort.

In an interview with Al Hadath TV on Friday, Abdul Aziz bin Laboun, a prominent geologist in the Kingdom, said, “This major tremor is expected and could happen at any minute. Seismic surveys show at least 1,000 tremors occur along the Red Sea. Consequently, we have to coexist with this situation, but precaution should be taken.”

“We should thoroughly read the geological history of the region. These are not incidental events. They are characteristic of the region,” Bin Laboun said without elaborating.

At the same time, the Saudi geological survey confirmed that the number of tremors that are monitored in the Red Sea does not exceed dozens per week, and they are not felt and do not constitute a danger.

The official spokesman for the Saudi geological survey, Tariq Aba Al-Khail, said in a statement reported by the Emirate of Makkah Al-Mukarramah on Saturday, “The Geological Hazards Center in the Saudi Geological Survey continuously monitors, around the clock, seismic activity in the central Red Sea region along the groove rift.”

“The seismic magnitude ranges from weak to moderate, as it is considered a tectonic tension zone as a result of the divergence of the African tectonic plate from the Arab tectonic plate, which is characterized by mostly weak to moderate seismic activity,” he added.

He indicated that “the timing and locations of earthquakes cannot be predicted,” and “everything that has been raised recently is just personal judgments that are not based on studies, follow-up, and monitoring, but rather mere predictions.”

He also explained that the Saudi Geological Survey is the concerned authority entrusted with seismic monitoring in the Kingdom, stressing the need to take the correct information from the official authorities with regard to seismic monitoring.

  • Rahul Gandhi’s prediction about `Adani bubble’ came true: Digvijaya

Rahul Gandhi’s prediction about `Adani bubble’ came true: Digvijaya

    [ad_1]

Bhopal: Congress leader Digvijaya Singh on Saturday said Rahul Gandhi had predicted that the meteoric rise in the share prices of Adani group firms was a “bubble” which would burst soon.

Adani group stocks have taken a beating on the bourses after US-based activist short-seller Hindenburg Research made a litany of allegations including fraudulent transactions and share price manipulation. The group has dismissed the charges as lies.

“A security personnel of the Lok Sabha told Rahul Gandhi that shares of Adani group were doing well. He (Gandhi) told him that it was just a bubble which would burst soon,” Singh said.

This was precisely what happened a month later, the Rajya Sabha leader added.

Incomes of most people fell during the coronavirus pandemic but the market capitalizations of capitalists soared, Singh said.

“It is hard to understand that when the market remained closed how the market capitalisation of businessmen skyrocketed,” he added.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had promised in 2014 that it would bring back black money stashed overseas but nothing happened in the last nine years, Singh said.

  • IIT Hyderabad’s Raindrop Research Facility to help precision prediction of rainfall

IIT Hyderabad’s Raindrop Research Facility to help precision prediction of rainfall

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) has established a Raindrop Research Facility (RRF) for simulating atmospheric conditions from the clouds to the ground in order to better predict rainfall.

The facility was inaugurated on Friday by V.K. Saraswat, Member, of NITI Aayog.

Accurate rainfall prediction is one of the major challenges in environmental research as rainfall is influenced by several factors and atmospheric conditions. The RRF will offer a more accurate understanding of rainfall which will help understand global climate change better.

Explaining the uniqueness of the facility, Kirti Sahu, lead researcher at RRF and professor in the department of chemical engineering at IITH, said, “One of the key limitations in rainfall modelling is the lack of fundamental knowledge of the microphysical processes like coalescence, breakup and phase change, in the actual atmospheric conditions.

“Using the novel experimental facility developed at IITH, the temperature can be varied from -10-degree C to 40 degrees C and relative humidity can be maintained from zero to the saturation level. Thus, we can mimic the dynamic atmospheric conditions from cloud to ground and estimate the shape and size distributions of raindrops at various altitudes. This information will be used to improve rainfall prediction. This methodology is a far better choice than the other measurement methods in use now.”

The machine learning-based digital holography technique developed at IIT Hyderabad has emerged as a powerful tool for capturing three-dimensional information about raindrops with high spatial resolution. This technique will be beneficial for improving rainfall forecasts when combined with the unique experimental facility.

B.S. Murty, Director, IITH, said, “This facility is expected to provide a lot of information on weather forecasting, particularly on rainfall. It is not only going to be useful for our country, but also to the whole world in predicting rainfall with much better precision.”
