A top US official has praised India’s press freedom and the importance of journalists in promoting democracy in the world’s most populous country.

US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Donald Lu stated that “there is nothing that’s kept secret there. You have India as a democracy in part because you have a free press that really works.”

“I know the media market is changing. But I have such respect for the freedom of the press in India. There is nothing that’s kept secret there. You have India as a democracy in part because you have a free press that really works,” Lu told PTI in Washington.

“I can remember going into MEA (Ministry of External Affairs) once and seeing a senior person with files stacked up to the ceiling because he was processing a Right For Information request. And he was complaining bitterly about having to do this and I could only laugh because we have to do the same thing in our bureaucracy where if someone asks for a document, I have to spend several days finding the document for them because that’s what democracy does,” he said.

Nitish praises BJP MLC Shahnawaz Hussain in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur

    [ad_1]

Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has praised senior BJP leader and MLC Shahnawaz Hussain during the inauguration of an ethanol plant in Muzaffarpur.

While addressing a gathering during the inauguration on Thursday, Kumar said that he is happy that Hussain came for this event.

Such a statement by the Bihar Chief Minister has come at a time when political barbs were underway between the JD-U and BJP in Bihar.

    MS Education Academy

“It is great courage shown by him to attend the event of the state government. It is a big thing. At present, none of the BJP leaders would dare to do this and attend a programme of the Bihar government. I am very pleased to see him here. He is my old friend and also shared the cabinet in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government,” Kumar said.

“We are making efforts to establish industries in Bihar. We have also demanded a grant from the Centre for the production of ethanol. I want to ask him to convey our demand to the Centre. If the Centre would give us any grant, it would be a great help for Bihar and if it would not do the same, our government is doing it as per our capacity,” the Chief Minister added.

“If the Centre would help us in the ethanol sector, I will give full credit to him (Shahnawaz Hussain). I don’t understand why his party is not promoting him and not giving him space in the Central cabinet,” Kumar said.

The Chief Minister along with his cabinet Ministers visited Muzaffarpur’s Motipur Industrial Area and inaugurated the ethanol plant on Thursday.

When Hussain was the Industry Minister in the Nitish Kumar cabinet during the NDA government, he made great efforts to bring industries in Bihar, Kumar added.

Due to hard work of Hussain, ethanol plant, Pepsi bottling plant and many other industries came to Bihar.

  • ‘He’s done a great job’: Youngkin praises would-be rivals

‘He’s done a great job’: Youngkin praises would-be rivals

    [ad_1]

Any criticism at all of those tumultuous Trump years? “Well, I think what you say and how you say it,” Youngkin offered delicately. “I think there is a chance to disagree with people without being disagreeable. I don’t call people names. [Avoiding insults] is just one of the things I believe is appropriate. We just have different styles.”

In an age of snarling politics, Youngkin is trying to decide if the 2024 field has room for a different style. While he draws a contrast with Trump, Youngkin shot to national prominence in GOP circles largely on the strength of his deft handling of Trump in his 2021 victory. He gained the former president’s support — and won handily in Trump-backing precincts—but effectively rebuffed Democratic efforts to tie him closely to the former president. Youngkin, a wealthy former private-equity executive and political novice, beat former Gov. Terry McAuliffe, who had been a well-known national Democrat for 25 years.

Now, as winter turns to spring, Youngkin is in the midst of a prolonged and even anguished decision-making process about whether the moment is right for a presidential run, according to people close to his deliberations, as well as Virginia and national operatives familiar with his decision-making.

Pushing him forward are the appeals of people who want what they perceive as a winning alternative to Trump and DeSantis — as well as the historical examples of Trump and former president Barack Obama, who showed that this is an era that rewards people who seize their moment rather than devote years to checking traditional boxes.

Holding him back are doubts about whether there is sufficient fluidity in the Republican field to accommodate what would start as a somewhat longshot candidacy. In addition, a presidential flop could mar what has been a strong start to his governorship.

On the day of the Youngkin interview, it was clear from conversations with legislators that many are derisive about his presidential ambitions after a short time in office. Local reporters scoff irritably about his national interviews while being often inaccessible to people covering his official Virginia duties. (Youngkin’s team noted that he’s done more than 100 one-on-one interviews with Virginia outlets.)

Former Gov. L. Douglas Wilder — a Democrat who says he likes Youngkin personally — recalled the home-state backlash to his own short-lived 1992 campaign. In an interview, he said Youngkin would be making a mistake to run: better to build a local record and bide his time and perhaps be selected as vice presidential nominee or run in 2028.

For now, his interview and travel schedule certainly seems like someone who wants to keep his options open — and is enjoying the attention. In his two years in office, he’s done around 80 national TV interviews, including numerous Sunday shows, and is headlining a number of prominent events in the next few weeks, including the Bush Institute leadership forum in Dallas, the Heritage Foundation’s 50th anniversary summit at Mount Vernon and a speech at the Reagan Library.

Other highlights of the Youngkin interview — conducted over fried chicken tacos at a Main Street diner near the Capitol—included:

    — His calculation about running: Unsurprisingly for the politician he’s become, Youngkin called his name being thrown into the mix “a humbling, humbling, humbling conversation” but said his full attention was on Virginia. But implicit in his answer was that by turning a purple state red, he is trying to create a Virginia model for the Republican party to win nationally.

“Virginia is a really good case study on the nation,” he said. “People thought it was purple, it was pretty darn blue. And what it takes is, first of all, a platform that is true to your ideals. You can’t deviate because people know, they can look at you and say, is he really going to do what he said he’s going to do?”

Youngkin implicitly criticized right wing Republican politicians who just play to the base, saying: “What I’d seen in Virginia, and I think I see this across the nation, is we in fact have to bring people into the Republican Party, we have to be additive, not [rely on] subtraction, and we can’t win otherwise.”

    — He never expected to run for office in the first place: In a nation that has seen inequality surge in recent years, Youngkin has had a true rags to riches story, going from helping his family out by working as a dishwasher as a 15 year old in Virginia Beach to attending Rice University on a college basketball scholarship to then becoming a captain of finance. “I never dreamed that I would have a chance to take over from the founders of Carlyle and never dreamed I’d be sitting here with you all as the 74th governor of the Commonwealth,” he said.

    — The mental health crisis: Youngkin said that no one has been spared from the profound mental health crisis in society that has manifested itself in huge challenges in schools, the workplace and families and marriages. He’s made the issue a top priority of his legislative agenda by asking for more than $230 million as part of a three-year plan for the state’s behavioral health system to try to stem the tide of despair.

“Our mental health crisis that we’re in is more acute than we could possibly ever imagine,” he said somberly. “Because of the base-level issues that we’ve had with the pandemic on top, and then when you marry that with the fact that our behavioral health system is so ill equipped, and I don’t know nationally, but I know Virginia, and we are overwhelmed.”

    — The hot-button issue of education: Youngkin said that Republicans aren’t on their back heels anymore when it comes to education since parents want to have a say in their children’s education and are mad that many public schools were closed during much of the Covid pandemic. He said that there’s been “a systematic reduction of expectations” that damaged many students, especially those from minority, poor or immigrant backgrounds.

“Parents stood up for a moment and said, ‘It’s all wrong,’ ” he said. “They were all upset because they had been pushed out of their children’s lives and bureaucrats and politicians had told them ‘we know better, go over there, and we’re not going to let you have a role.’ That was the issue.”

Youngkin said that the infamous comment that his 2021 opponent McAuliffe made during the campaign (“I don’t think parents should be telling schools what they should teach kids”) did not surprise him.

“When my opponent said what he said, I wasn’t shocked, because I knew that’s what he believed,” he argued. “But I do believe that many of the independents and the Democrats who had kind of hoped that’s not what they believed, all of a sudden recognize that no, that is what the liberal left wing and the Democrats believe, that they know better than parents. And I do think that that was a very important part of the clarification of our message.”

    — Loudoun county sexual assaults: Youngkin drew attention in our interview to the recent sexual assault cases in Loudoun county, where a public school superintendent didn’t tell parents about a male student who had sexually assaulted a young woman and moved the student to another school rather than prosecuting the person. (The student then sexually assaulted another student at the new school.) Youngkin initiated an investigation, which led to a grand jury and an indictment against the superintendent.

“Everybody said that I was fighting the social culture wars,” he said. “Cover ups are not part of what we do in Virginia. … We’re gonna stand up for parents, we’re gonna have transparency, we’re gonna have high expectations, we’re gonna have the best standards in the nation, we’re gonna go from last to first again.”

Esha Deol praises Hema Malini’s ‘Ganga’ ballet performance as ‘absolutely remarkable’

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Veteran actor and BJP MP Hema Malini left the audience spellbound as she performed the ballet ‘Ganga’, at an event in Mumbai on Sunday. Not only fans, Hema’s elder daughter Esha Deol was also mesmerized by her mother’s performance.

Taking to Twitter on Monday morning, Esha wrote, “Watched my mum @dreamgirlhemaperform Ganga on stage. Absolutely remarkable performance, visually stunning with a very strong message on our environment & river restoration. Must watch her next show. Love you mamma. #gangaballetbyhemamalini”

    tweet 1637671019904376832 20230320 175322 via 10015 io

Esha posted a picture of Hema, performing an aerial dance on the stage. The ‘dreamgirl’ actor was dressed in glittery clothes.
This event was organized under the initiative of the Maharashtra government, to spread awareness regarding the cleanliness of the River Ganga.

Speaking to ANI, Hema earlier said, “Basically, it’s a dance ballet on River Ganga by me to spread awareness regarding the cleanliness of River Ganga. It was the initiative of Sushma Swaraj, and she wanted it to happen in Banaras”.

“Ganga is ‘Dev Nadi’. She (Goddess Ganga) is coming from heaven for the benefit of humanity, and wherever the river flows, it is beautiful. It is very important to keep such a river clean. Not just Ganga, I would say, every river in the country should be kept clean. That’s what the concept of this ballet is. It is the initiative of the Maharashtra government to keep all 75 rivers flowing in the state, clean. I am glad that Maharashtra Culture Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar came up with the initiative,” Hema Malini said.

She said that the ballet was earlier performed in Pune and Nagpur.

“I have performed different types of ballet around the world, and they have been liked by the public. We represent our culture by enacting characters from our mythology like Durga, and Radha Krishna in pure classical form. But, in this ballet on River Ganga, we can’t put a very classical dance. So, you get to see a very free style of beautiful dances,” she added.

AIMIM chief Owaisi praises KCR in Bihar

    [ad_1]

Patna: AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi showered praise on K Chandrasekhara Rao, the Chief Minister of his home state of Telangana, which is bracing for assembly elections later this year.

The Hyderabad MP was replying to queries from journalists in Bihar’s Kishanganj district, before winding up his tour of “Seemanchal”, a densely populated but poverty-ridden and flood-prone region of the state.

“I must say KCR has a vision. And he has done something worthwhile during his tenure, so far,” said Owaisi on Sunday in reply to a question about Prime Ministerial ambitions of regional satraps like Rao. Owaisi also praised KCR’s counterparts in Bihar and West Bengal, Nitish Kumar and Mamata Banerjee, respectively.

“Telangana is a landlocked state. Yet it has a very impressive gross state domestic product. It used to rank the highest in terms of use of pump sets. It is still the second highest producer of fisheries,” said the AIMIM Chief, whose party has seven MLAs in the 119-strong assembly.

Although KCR’s party, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), enjoys a brute majority, it faces a challenge in the upcoming elections with the BJP making inroads and, according to many political experts, tipped to replace the Congress as the principal opposition in Telangana.

Owaisi also lambasted the Congress and its allies for “crying democracy is in danger over what happened in Maharashtra but looking the other way when our MLAs in Bihar were lured away”.

The AIMIM had won five seats in the Bihar assembly polls of 2020 and four of its MLAs joined the RJD last year, one of them even getting a cabinet berth.

Owaisi said, “We wanted an alliance with Mahagathbandhan in 2020, but they derided us… Our performance was there for all to see. We had contested only 10 seats. In 2025, we will field our candidates in 50 constituencies of the 243-strong Bihar assembly”.

  • Gadkari praises CM Adityanath for controlling crime in UP, compares him with Lord Krishna

Gadkari praises CM Adityanath for controlling crime in UP, compares him with Lord Krishna

    [ad_1]

Gorakhpur: Union minister Nitin Gadkari on Monday heaped praise on Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for controlling the law and order situation in the state and compared him with Lord Krishna who “came on the earth to end the evil”.

Gadkari, who was in the state to inaugurate and lay foundation stones of several national highway projects worth a total of Rs 13,500 crore, reiterated efforts to lay expressway network in UP in a bid to make roads in the state at par with that of the United States.

“Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has taken strict measures to protect people from the evil and dangerous tendencies in the society. On behalf of the people of the country and in my personal capacity, I congratulate him for the steps he has taken,” the road transport and highways minister said here after laying the foundation stone of and inaugurating various national highway projects worth Rs 10,000 crore.

Referring to a recent conversation with his wife, the Union minister said, “My wife asked me as to what is happening in Uttar Pradesh. When I told her about the measures taken by the state government in the last six years to rein in crime, she told me about epic Bhagwat Gita in which the lord has said that he will take incarnation whenever there is injustice and will end the evil.”

“As the Lord Krishna did, Yogi ji is also acting in a similar way, for safeguarding the gentle (sajjan) people. He has taken strong steps against the people having a mean attitude and are dangerous for society,” Gadkari said in presence of Adityanath on the dais.

Gorakhpur has been ‘karmabhoomi’ of CM Adityanath. He has been elected from there to Lok Sabha several times and is presently an MLA from Gorakhpur Urban constituency.

I am happy that Yogi ji has set an ideal about law and order situation. I had said earlier that we will make the roads of Uttar Pradesh at par with America’s, and our efforts have started in that direction.

“Yogi ji, I assure you that gradually the flight service from Delhi to Lucknow will stop as people will be made to think whether to go by plane or by road. In our country, infrastructure has got priority under the leadership of (Narendra) Modi ji,” Gadkari said.

Strict action to check crimes in UP and demolition of illegal properties of mafias and wrongdoers with the help of bulldozers have been making news very often in the state.

The stern measures in this regard has earned CM Adityanath the nickname “Bulldozer Baba”.
Gadkari said that looking at the changing picture of UP, the way investment is coming in, “I believe that UP will definitely become a happy and prosperous state under the leadership of Yogi ji”.

The development of roads in UP will remove poverty, hunger and unemployment in the state, he said, adding that there is a need to bring the automobile industry in UP so that more and more youths get employment.
Earlier, addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Adityanath said that today with the inspiration of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a strong network of road infrastructure is visible in the entire country.

“The credit for this goes to Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari under the guidance of the prime minister. Highway construction is going on across the country and Gadkari ji has taken its pace to a new height. The world is amazed that despite the biggest pandemic of the century, India’s economy is growing at such a fast pace. Its basis is strong infrastructure,” Adityanath said.

Later, in Mahoba, Gadkari in the presence of the chief minister inaugurated and laid foundation stones of nine national highway projects worth Rs 3,500 crore, an official release said.

Gadkari said Mahoba was the land of brave warriors and had a rich history.

With the construction of Jhansi-Khajuraho road, the traffic will ease in Maihar-Singrauli-Ranchi industrial division and Jhansi-Orchha-Khajuraho route and tourism of the state will get a boost, the release said.

Gadkari said with the construction of Kabrai section on the Madhya Pradesh-Uttar Pradesh border, the traffic in the Bhopal-Kanpur industrial division till Lucknow will be smooth.

The Union minister also said the construction of road over bridge between Jhansi and Prayagraj will facilitate traffic in Bundelkhand region.

Gadkari announced to expand 258 km Ramvangaman road in Chitrakoot to four lanes. He also announced to build 15 km four-lane bypass at a cost of Rs 200 crore in Chitrakoot, 18 km four-lane bypass in Mahoba and 15 km 4-lane bypass in Artara along with four-laning of 70 km stretch from Prayagraj to Mirzapur.
