IPL 2023: Kohli, Du Plessis power RCB to thumping 8-wicket win over MI

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Scintillating half-centuries from Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli powered Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) to a thumping eight-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians in an IPL 2023 match, marking a happy homecoming at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, here on Sunday.

As RCB took the field in Chinnaswamy Stadium after 1247 days, chants of the franchise engulfed the whole arena. To their credit, RCB didn’t disappoint at all, as bowlers got wickets in power-play and middle overs to keep Mumbai to 171/7, though young Tilak Varma shined with an outstanding 84 not out off just 46 balls.

In reply, du Plessis and Kohli put out an exhibition of majestic strokeplay and rattled Mumbai’s bowling attack to enthrall home fans. While du Plessis made 73 off 43 balls, including five fours and six sixes, Kohli was in sublime touch to be 82 not out off 49 balls, laced with six fours and five sixes to chase 172 in 16.2 overs to get their IPL 2023 campaign off to a winning start.

    MS Education Academy

In defence of 171, Mumbai brought in Jason Behrendorff as an impact player in place of Suryakumar Yadav to share the new-ball with Arshad Khan. After making a watchful start, du Plessis cut down on the swing by dancing down the pitch to hit a four and two sixes on both sides of the wicket off Behrendorff.

Jofra Archer put down Kohli on his first ball of the match. Kohli then followed it up by placing a steer between backward point and short third man for four, and smacked a six over long-off. Kohli and du Plessis took a boundary each off Piyush Chawla and Archer to bring the fifty of their opening partnership in the power-play.

Du Plessis continued to be unstoppable — timing his drives through the off-side against Cameron Green twice and ended the over with a scooped six to take 17 runs off the eighth over. He welcomed off-spinner Hrithik Shokeen with consecutive sixes over mid-wicket and long-on, first of which took him to his fifty in 29 balls.

Kohli then danced down the pitch to whack Chawla over long-on for six, and bring up the century of the opening partnership in the 11th over, before reaching his fifty in 38 balls. He then welcomed Behrendorff with a pull through cow corner for four, before du Plessis pulled and flicked for four and six respectively.

Kohli hammered sixes off Archer and Arshad through the leg-side to keep Mumbai under the pump. They had a breakthrough when du Plessis holed out to long-on, breaking the 148-run opening partnership. After Dinesh Karthik fell for a three-ball duck, Glenn Maxwell slapped sixes over extra cover and fine leg, with Kohli whipping and lofting for four and six respectively to complete Bangalore’s chase with 22 balls remaining.

Earlier, Mohammed Siraj, Reece Topley and Karn Sharma starred to reduce Mumbai to 123/7, after being 48/4 at one point. But Varma stood tall and impressed everyone with his skill and temperament in hitting nine boundaries and four sixes at a strike-rate of 182.6, as Mumbai got 69 runs from the last five overs.

Ishan Kishan’s attempt to flick off Siraj took a fat leading edge to short third man. Cameron Green was cleaned bowled by a Topley yorker. Siraj could have had Rohit Sharma caught with a sharp bouncer, but he collided with Dinesh Karthik as neither of the two could hold on to the catch.

But Rohit, who earlier survived a direct hit attempt, was unable to capitalise on the two breathers and nicked behind off Akash Deep. Suryakumar Yadav had a start but ended up cutting straight to backward point off Michael Bracewell.

Despite wickets falling around, Varma continued to match forward. He began with a six over long-on off Deep which came right off the middle of the bat. When Harshal Patel pitched down leg, he came on top of the bounce to pull past short fine leg.

Varma was impressive in facing off-spinners; reverse-sweeping off Bracewell for four. He welcomed Glenn Maxwell by dancing down the pitch to thump a six over long-on, followed by going on backfoot to pull through mid-wicket for four.

Varma was also talking and advising T20 debutant Nehal Wadhera after every ball. That effect rubbed on when Wadhera pulled and smacked Karn Sharma for consecutive sixes, including a 101-m hit over long-on.

But Karn had the last laugh as Wadhera holed out to long-on in the 14th over. Two overs later, Tim David tried to hoick off Karn, but lost his middle stump. With Hrithik Shokeen falling to an athletic catch by Faf du Plessis off Harshal, Varma continued to get runs, pulling off Karn through fine leg for four.

He reached his fifty in 32 balls with a terrific heave over deep square leg for six off Deep. When Harshal gave some width, Varma freed his arms to slash through point for four. He then lofted and pulled Siraj for a brace of boundaries in the 19th over where the fast bowler gave four wides.

Varma pulled Harshal in the gap through square leg for four in the final over, before ending the innings with a helicopter shot to send a fuller delivery over long-on for six, as 22 runs came off the final over.

Hooda promises OPS if Congress voted to power in Haryana

    [ad_1]

Yamunanagar: Eyeing support of government employees, Congress leader and former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Sunday again promised restoration of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) if the party was voted to power in 2024 Assembly polls.

He slammed the BJP-JJP government for pushing the state into a debt trap, saying that a state that was once at the top of development has been number one in crime and unemployment.

Addressing the Vipaksh Aapke Samaksh and Jai Bharat Satyagraha programme organised by the Congress here, Hooda, who is the Leader of Opposition in Assembly, said Haryana is one of those states which have more debt than its state budget.

    MS Education Academy

“Today the state is immersed in a debt trap. Law and order has become worse. Haryana ranks number two in the country in crimes like murder and rape. Haryana, which was among the leading states, is rapidly lagging,” he said.

The meeting saw a large attendance with all roads leading to the programme venue were blocked.

Enthused by seeing the huge crowd, Hooda announced that the OPS will be implemented as soon as the Congress government is formed in the state.

“A pension of Rs 6,000 will be given to all elderly and we will give legal guarantee of the MSP (minimum support price). The creamy layer limit of backward class will be increased from Rs 6 lakh to Rs 10 lakh. Gas cylinders will be given to women for Rs 500 and sanitation workers would be given permanent jobs,” he promised.

Hooda said he had come to the meeting to listen to grievances of the people.

“In Haryana, farmers, laborers, traders, employees — rural and urban — and every section are repenting. Farmer is not getting the MSP. Today there is no buyer for mustard. The MSP of mustard is Rs 5,450 per quintal but farmers are forced to sell it for Rs 4,000. Potatoes have to be sold at 50 paise per kg in Pipli. It was promised to double the income of the farmer, but the agricultural cost doubled,” he added.

Expressing disagreement with the decision to end the Lok Sabha membership of Rahul Gandhi, Hooda said the Congress would fight a legal battle against this decision. “Today the Constitution itself is in danger, it needs to be protected. We will not allow the Constitution to be tampered with. No power can suppress the voice of Rahul Gandhi and the Congress.”

About the “record unemployment” in the state, he said the youths are migrating to other places for employment. “As soon as the Congress government is formed, we will provide permanent employment to the youth in Haryana itself and will fill vacant government posts,” Hooda added.

More than 24 party MLAs and 50 former ministers, former MLAs and former MPs, besides senior leaders, were present at the programme.

Former minister Ashok Arora, the convener of the Vipak Aapke Samaksh programme, conducted the meeting.

State Congress chief Uday Bhan said the BJP-led Central government is scared of Rahul Gandhi’s questions.

“What is the reason that the debt of Haryana has increased from Rs 60,000 crore to more than 3 lakh crores in the last nine years. Today the petroleum and has prices have come down in international market, but this government is not giving any relief to the common people. The time has come to overthrow this government,” he said.

MP Deepender Hooda said during the Congres government in the state four cities were connected with metro and 12 universities and medical colleges were built.

“The BJP-JJP government has derailed the state from the track of development and has pushed the youth of the state into the unemployment trap.”

    badbunnyrecast

Earlier this year, Bad Bunny wowed a Grammy audience of millions when he opened the show with a vibrant, turbo-charged performance entirely in Spanish, paying tribute to his native Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic — both of which have seen more than their fair share of natural disaster-induced tragedies.

Later that night, the singer and rapper, whose given name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, won the Grammy for Best Música Urbana Album for the Spanish-language album “Un Verano Sin Ti.”

The album, which was also nominated in the Big Four category of Album of the Year, featured the song “El Apagón,” in which he protests the injustice committed against Puerto Ricans who have suffered through frequent power blackouts, sometimes with deadly consequences.

Bad Bunny has taken to the stage to criticize LUMA Energy, the private company that manages the territory’s power system, for the repeated grid failures — as well as the public officials who awarded their contract. And the music in the nearly 23-minute video for “El Apagón” stops at the 53-second mark to highlight news footage of an explosion that caused a massive blackout across Puerto Rico. Later, at the 4:35 mark, Bad Bunny stops the music once again to highlight a documentary about gentrification in the territory, including interviews with displaced Puerto Ricans.

The singer and rapper, who somehow managed to carve out time from his busy schedule for a small, but hilarious role in the 2022 film “Bullet Train,” is also an outspoken supporter of LGBTQ rights, drawing attention to crimes committed against members of the community, including Alexa Negrón Luciano, a trans woman murdered in Toa Baja, Puerto Rico.

Ketanji Brown Jackson: The Recast Power List

When Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer announced he was stepping down, the pressure was on for President Joe Biden to nominate the first Black woman to the highest court in the U.S.

But Ketanji Brown Jackson broke the mold of Supreme Court jurist in more ways than one: When she was confirmed by the Senate in April 2022, she also became the first public defender to ascend to the court in a generation.

She joined the court’s all-female liberal wing, who are outnumbered in the court’s 6-3 conservative majority. But she immediately garnered attention for her surgically precise questioning of conservative lawyers. In the first eight arguments the court heard, Jackson spoke 11,003 words, more than double that of Elena Kagan or Sonia Sotomayor, according to the Empirical SCOTUS blog.

For the left, Jackson became a symbol of cautious hope at a time when trust in the Supreme Court is at historically low levels, especially among Democrats. Most memorably, she drew praise from court observers for citing the congressional record to Alabama Solicitor General Edmund LaCour Jr., who urged the court in Merrill v. Milligan to adopt a race-blind reading of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

She made her views abundantly clear — unusually so on a court where justices typically reserve their speechifying for their written opinions.

“I don’t think we can assume that just because race is taken into account that that necessarily creates an equal protection problem,” Jackson said at the time.

“The framers themselves adopted the equal protection clause, the 14th Amendment, the 15th Amendment, in a race-conscious way,” she said, adding that the “entire point” of the 14th Amendment was “to secure rights of the freed former slaves.”

She reprised the role of avid questioner in cases dealing with affirmative action in education, LGBTQ civil rights vs. business owners’ rights, and student debt relief — all cases where the law would have a deep impact on Americans’ daily lives.

Few jobs in government are as unforgiving as being mayor of Los Angeles. Leading America’s second-largest city is a gig that has for decades derailed promising political careers. An ever-growing, seemingly intractable homelessness crisis has only made the job more difficult.

But don’t tell that to Karen Bass.

The longtime congresswoman and vice presidential finalist took what many political observers classify as an unusual step: She left a safe seat to lead a city in turmoil. Los Angeles’ homeless population has ballooned to nearly 42,000 people, a population larger than many California cities. Of the 230,000 unsheltered homeless people across the U.S., 1 in 5 is in Los Angeles County — and most live in the city of Los Angeles.

Rather than scare Bass off, these issues pushed her back to the city where she got her start as an activist and community organizer more than three decades ago. Her main motivation: anger over the city’s inability to tackle homelessness.

“If we had addressed it and taken care of it, I wouldn’t be running for mayor,” she said in an interview during the campaign. “I’d be running for reelection to the House.”

Bass didn’t waste any time in her new gig, launching an outreach program that has placed around 1,000 previously unsheltered people in temporary housing, and declaring a state of emergency that gives her office more decision-making authority that would typically be shared with an often fractious city council.

She’ll face her first big test this year, as the county’s Covid-era moratorium on evictions is set to expire, putting thousands more at risk of losing their homes.

Bennie Thompson, son of the segregated south and staunch liberal ally of Nancy Pelosi, and Liz Cheney, scion of a conservative political dynasty, would make unlikely partners in any context.

But the pair teamed up to helm one of the most influential congressional investigations in history: Diving headfirst into Donald Trump’s effort to subvert the transfer of power after losing the 2020 election. And they did it by embracing bipartisanship, calling out white supremacy among the insurrectionists and highlighting the bravery of the women who came forward to testify at the hearings.

Thompson, as chair of the committee, had the monumental task of casting the Jan. 6 attacks as an attempt at sedition — leaning on his own background as a Black Mississippian and drawing connections during the hearings between Trump’s “Stop the Steal” campaign and the “Lost Cause” effort to mythologize the Confederacy.

Cheney, besides cloaking the committee in some legitimacy as a high-profile Republican, was a central player in a group of women — including Sarah Matthews and Alyssa Farah Griffin — who convinced Mark Meadows aide Cassidy Hutchinson to testify in front of the cameras.

For 18 months, Thompson and Cheney used their complementary strengths, leaning into their own lived experiences to piece together a damning narrative about Trump and his allies’ continued efforts to overturn and plant doubt in the electoral process.

“I’m convinced that our hearings reinforced the greatness of our country, that we settle our differences at the ballot box,” Thompson said.

Elon Musk: The Recast Power List

    elon

For Elon Musk, buying Twitter in October for $44 billion was part of a grand plan for creating a “super app” — called an “X-App” — modeled after China’s WeChat.

But Musk, a self-proclaimed free speech absolutist, also had another goal in mind: his investment, he tweeted, was “important to the future of civilization to have a common digital town square, where a wide range of beliefs can be debated.”

Since then, Musk has emerged as a central figure in America’s culture wars.

As head of Twitter, he fired chief executive Parag Agrawal, as well as the board, appointing himself as sole director. As a result, some critics say, he’s removed some safeguards implemented by the previous regime to mitigate hate speech and the spread of misinformation, which disproportionately target marginalized communities.

Hate speech toward Black Americans spiked 500 percent within the first 12 hours of Musk’s Twitter coup and has sustained a 200 percent increase over the last several months. Another study found that derogatory tweets and retweets that mention the LGBTQ+ community and “grooming” skyrocketed 119 percent since Musk’s acquisition, according to the Center for Countering Digital Hate. In yet another report, the rate of antisemitic tweets increased by 105 percent when comparing the four-month time periods before and after Musk’s purchase.

Politically, Musk has aligned himself with conservatives, reinstating formerly suspended users such as former President Donald Trump and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.). Musk has also signaled his support of the expected White House run of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, while relishing in trolling Democrats.

His Twitter takeover has firmly cemented him at the center of American politics at a time when the app continues to be the dominant platform used by lawmakers — on both sides of the aisle.

SL to sign deal with India to shift to renewable energy for power generation

    [ad_1]

Colombo: Sri Lanka will sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with India to promote renewable energy as the Island nation aims to generate 70 per cent of its electricity requirements from renewable sources by 2030.

Sri Lankan Cabinet has given approval for a MoU on the cooperation in the field of renewable energy between the two countries, a Sri Lanka Cabinet spokesman said.

“The government has declared generating 70 per cent of the electricity requirement by 2030 from renewable energy sources to become independent in power supply and for neutralising carbon emissions by 2050,” the spokesman added.

He said that the Indian government has expressed willingness to strengthen renewable energy sector by operating and facilitating power generation using solar, wind and power generation through biomass.

India is also to provide continuous transmission of infrastructure in places where agreed mutually in the island including the northern and eastern provinces in cooperation with private and state entrepreneurs in India and Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) of India and the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) of Sri Lanka have entered into an agreement to jointly implement a solar power project in two stages in the same venue where the previous coal power generation plant was planned to be established in Sampoor in Trincomalee, generating 135 megawatts.

“As the first stage of this project, it is expected to implement a solar power project of 50 megawatts with a total estimated investment of $42.5 million and to construct a 220 kilowatts transmission line with 40 km length from Sampoor to Kappalthure in the Eastern province spending $23.6 million and it is planned to complete this stage in two years from 2024 to 2025,” the spokesman said.

“A solar power generation plant with an additional 85 megawatts is expected to be constructed under a total investment of $72 million at the stage 2 of this project. Further to this, it has been planned to construct a transmission line of 76 km with a capacity of 220 kilowatts from Kappalthure to New Habarana in the North Central province with an estimated expenditure of $42 million in order to the distribution of electricity generated under the above stage 02,” he added.

On Friday, Sri Lanka’s Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera had a discussion on investment opportunities and energy sector corporation with an Indian delegation led by Pankaj Jain, Secretary of the Indian Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. The discussion had focused on developing Trincomalee as an energy hub and promoting renewable energy, infrastructure development and supply of liquefied natural gas.

At the discussion, Jain had called for enhanced partnership between India and Sri Lanka in energy sector and said that the two countries need to explore renewable energy sources as well as understanding newer molecules like green hydrogen, ammonia and compressed biogas.

Electricity Amendment Bill not to impact agriculture sector, says Power Minister

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Electricity (Amendment) Bill, 2022 covers amendments related to the power sector and there is no amendment proposal related to the agriculture sector, the Parliament was told on Tuesday.

Power Minister R.K. Singh gave the assurance in response to a question in Lok Sabha during Question Hour.

“Further, the provision of subsidy as in the present Act i.e. Electricity Act, 2003 is not proposed to be changed and the states can continue to give subsidy to farmers and other consumers as they are doing at present,” he said.

As per Electricity Act, 2003, the subsidy to specific categories of consumers including domestic and farmers is decided by state governments.

The proposed legislation is currently under consideration of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy, which is headed by BJP MP Jagdambika Pal.

Last year during the Monsoon session, the Electricity (Amendment) Bill was referred to the Parliamentary Committee by the power minister, immediately after being introduced in Lok Sabha, amid protests by opposition that it encroached upon powers of states and allows privatisation of electricity on the lines of communication sector.
