  • Soft power: cardigans become male status symbol as sales soar

Soft power: cardigans become male status symbol as sales soar

    [ad_1]

Until recently, a man in a cardigan might typically have signalled “retiree”. But now the cosiest of knitwear items has been given a makeover.

Fashion-friendly brands such as The Elder Statesman, Ami Paris and Studio Nicholson are pushing the cardigan. Marks & Spencer reports that sales of cardigans are performing well for spring – up 90% on 2022, possibly due to the “inbetween” weather. A green “preppy” style is particularly popular. More styles will be launched by the retailer this autumn.

If the quarter-zip jumper is a masculine status symbol worn by the likes of David Beckham, the Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and those working in the City, the cardigan is increasingly about soft power.

The Netflix series Beef provides a study in the soft power cardigan – thanks to the character George Nakai, played by Joseph Lee. If, early in the series, he appears to be a kind and gentle soul, he flexes his power as the plot unravels. The cardigans he wears – ostensibly the ultimate in non-threatening knitwear – allow him to hide in plain sight.

They have gained a cult following in fashion. A recent GQ article with the headline “George from Beef is terrible but his cardigans are not” praised choices from brands including Needles, Dries van Noten and John Elliott.

Lee’s Nakai isn’t the only example of the soft power cardigan on TV. In the latest episode of Succession, Roman Roy wears a cardigan to look unthreatening on a business trip to Norway, when he is anything but.

Away from TV, celebrities have been adopting the cardigan including Brad Pitt and the Creed star Michael B Jordan. Crucially, these are not the quiet luxury takes on the item as worn by the Roys and their ilk. Pitt wore a multicoloured zipped-up cardigan that had a folksy feel, while Jordan recently favoured a pink V-neck style with a low-cut vest.

Pedro Pascal – star of the Last of Us and the internet’s current crush – has anointed the soft power cardigan. He wore a cropped version on the red carpet, and an oversized flecked one for an appearance on Radio 1. It slots into his appeal perfectly, as described by The Face magazine: “[he’s] relatable, despite the fact [he’s] been launched into celeb super-stardom with the force of dynamite”.

Gary Armstrong, the stylist and editor of CircleZeroEight, has long worn cardigans. He has noticed the take-up of the item recently and says it fits into the kind of statement young men want to make with their clothes now. “It is quite similar to the guys who have started to adopt pearl necklaces. It’s like, ‘I’m so in touch with my own masculinity that I’m not threatened in wearing like a floral cardigan.’”

Thom Scherdel, the buying manager for mens ready-to-wear at Browns, has noticed more cardigans from more trend-led designers. “With multi-generational appeal, cardigans have always been a smarter alternative to casual knitwear,” he says. “However, recently, we’ve seen the style adapted by brands that have more directional style aesthetic and who have reimagined the classic shape.”

Armstrong says the current vogue for men in cardigans was preceded by the grunge era – with Kurt Cobain a cardigan icon (the Nirvana frontman’s cardigan was sold at auction in 2019 for $334,000 [£267,000]). He applauds more men taking up the item. “A cardigan is a bit of a crossover thing – you could make it look smart if you’re wearing it to the office,” he says. “Also, it’s nice to be warm.”

  • Big changes needed to power sharing in Northern Ireland, says 70% of population

Big changes needed to power sharing in Northern Ireland, says 70% of population

    [ad_1]

More than two-thirds of people in Northern Ireland believe big changes are required to the power-sharing institutions created by the Good Friday agreement, research commissioned by a parliamentary committee has found.

The same proportion of the population, 70%, think the peace accord of 1998 has failed to deliver stable governance with the Stormont assembly not sitting for nine of the 25 years that have elapsed since the Belfast agreement was struck.

The research was conducted by YouGov and Ohio State University for the House of Commons Northern Ireland affairs committee.

That level of scepticism about the deal’s success in delivering stability remained consistent across age, religion and political affiliation.

The committee chair, Simon Hoare, said the poll provided an “important snapshot” of current thinking in the region.

The devolved government sitting in Stormont was created under strand one of the Belfast Good Friday agreement, which was considered an ingenious way of getting previously warring sides, republicans and loyalists to run the country together.

Under the power-sharing system, elected politicians are required to self-designate as unionists, nationals or “other” to ensure laws could only be passed that worked for all communities.

A quarter of a century on, and three-quarters of the respondents in the survey consider the requirement that key decisions have to have support from both nationalist and unionist sides gives the DUP and Sinn Féin an effective veto, with growing parties such as Alliance locked out.

Stormont was collapsed for three years after a Sinn Féin walkout in 2017 and has been suspended for more than a year after the DUP pulled the plug in a protest over Brexit.

Support for reform is widespread but Bertie Ahern, one of the architects of the peace deal, has said it could only happen once the DUP was back in Stormont. The party, led by Sir Jeffrey Donaldson, said it would not be “browbeaten” into a return and few are expecting it to resume power-sharing until September.

Donaldson faced a cacophony of calls to return to Stormont in Belfast last week with leading figures involved in the peace deal, including Bill Clinton, urging politicians to face down “ugly” moments and “get the show on the road”.

“I ask you not to be discouraged, this is human affairs, there are very few permanent victories or defeats in human affairs. All these old ugly problems are always rearing their heads. You just have to suck it up and beat it back and deal with it,” Clinton told a conference at Queen’s University.

  • Opposition parties care for OBCs, Dalits only when out of power: Dinesh

Opposition parties care for OBCs, Dalits only when out of power: Dinesh

    [ad_1]

Lucknow: Senior BJP leader Dinesh Sharma hit out at the opposition parties in UP on Thursday for demanding a caste-based census, asserting that they care for the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) and Dalits only when they are removed from power.

Targeting the Samajwadi Party, Sharma said their leaders should be asked why they did not start a caste-based census when they were in power in Uttar Pradesh for “so many years”. This, he added, would clearly show how much they care for the backward community.

In recent days, the Samajwadi Party and the Congress have made a strong pitch for a caste census.

    MS Education Academy

“When Raju Pal was killed, Umesh Pal was killed, Sandeep Nishad, the gunner of Umesh Pal, who was also from a backward community, was killed, Samajwadi Party and Congress remained silent and did not utter a word in favour of them. Instead they shed their tears in favour of the mafia,” the former deputy chief minister alleged.

Raju Pal, an MLA, was killed allegedly by gangster-politician Atiq Ahmad and his gang members in 2005. Umesh Pal a key witness in the murder case was gunned down with his two security personnel in February this year by Ahmad’s gang in Prayagraj.

Ahmad and his brother Ashraf, who were in police custody in connection with the Umesh Pal murder case, were shot dead by three assailants outside a hospital on April 15. The three assailants were arrested.

Sharma also said that the BJP promotes mayors who perform better.

Citing his own example, he said he remained the mayor of Lucknow for 11 years and then he was made the vice president of the BJP and he was also made the deputy chief minister of Uttar Pradesh.

Similarly, he added, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis too served as Nagpur mayor before being promoted. Fadnavis also served as the chief minister of Maharashtra from 2014 to 2019.

Baby Rani Maurya, who was the mayor of Agra, was made the Uttarakhand governor from August 2018 to September 2021, Sharma said.

“If mayors do good work they eventually get promoted in the party and government,” he said.

Polling for the urban local bodies in the state is slated in two phases – on May 4 and May 11.

The counting of votes will be held on May 13.

  • ‘Weaponizing its power’: Disney accuses DeSantis of retaliation in federal lawsuit

‘Weaponizing its power’: Disney accuses DeSantis of retaliation in federal lawsuit

    [ad_1]

“Disney now is forced to defend itself against a State weaponizing its power to inflict political punishment,” the lawsuit states.

The two opposing moves Wednesday represent an escalation in the ongoing battle between the Florida governor and Disney. The fight was sparked last year after Disney publicly criticized Florida’s Republican-controlled Legislature for approving a bill banning teachers from leading classroom lessons on gender identity and sexual orientation, known by opponents as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill.

DeSantis, who supported the legislation and signed it into law, later pushed Florida lawmakers to strip Disney of its self-governing status that the company enjoyed for decades at its central Florida theme parks. Disney remains one of Florida’s biggest employers, with more than 70,000 employees at its theme parks near Orlando.

The governor also previously appointed a new board to oversee Disney’s Florida district. But in a surprise move last February, the Central Florida board that had been controlled by Disney quietly approved a pact that gave Disney authority over its parks. The DeSantis administration only learned about the agreement in March and scrambled to respond.

Some Republicans criticized DeSantis over the Disney flap, claiming that the governor — who is expected to jump into the 2024 presidential race — was outmaneuvered by the corporation. Former President Donald Trump, who already announced his presidential bid and is known for fighting with rivals, called DeSantis’ feud with Disney a “political stunt” and lamented that the entire episode is unnecessary.

On Wednesday, the DeSantis-appointed Central Florida Tourism Oversight District Board of Supervisors, during a meeting in Lake Buena Vista, voted to invalidate the February pact in an attempt to wrestle back control of Disney. But that move may be on hold as the lawsuit winds its way through the courts.

Former Florida Supreme Court Justice Alan Lawson, an attorney hired by the district, said that the old board attempted to act without the legal authority to act.

“Everyone must play by the same rules,” Lawson said. “Disney was openly and legally granted unique and special privilege, that privilege of running its own local government for a time. That era has ended.”

Jeremy T. Redfern, deputy press secretary for DeSantis, responded to questions in an email stating: “We are unaware of any legal right that a company has to operate its own government or maintain special privileges not held by other businesses in the state. This lawsuit is yet another unfortunate example of their hope to undermine the will of the Florida voters and operate outside the bounds of the law.”

Representatives of Disney did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

In its lawsuit, Disney stated that it regretted that the ongoing fight has led to a federal lawsuit.

“Governor DeSantis and his allies paid no mind to the governing structure that facilitated Reedy Creek’s successful development until one year ago, when the Governor decided to target Disney,” the lawsuit states. “There is no room for disagreement about what happened here: Disney expressed its opinion on state legislation and was then punished by the State for doing so.”

The lawsuit repeatedly claims that DeSantis targeted Disney and is punishing the company for speaking out against the “Don’t Say Gay” bill. It adds that DeSantis and the new board are violating Disney’s constitutional and the First Amendment rights, adding that once the “political story” was set, the retaliation only became worse, the lawsuit read.

“Indeed, Governor DeSantis has reaffirmed, again and again, that the State campaign to punish Disney for its speech about House Bill 1557 has been a coordinated and deliberate one from the start,” according to the lawsuit. “Disney’s commentary on House Bill 1557 was, he claimed, a ‘declaration of war’ and ‘a textbook example of when a corporation should stay out of politics.’”

India planning power grid with Saudi Arabia, UAE via undersea cable

    [ad_1]

India is planning to link its power grid through undersea cables to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), local media reported.

India’s Ministry of Energy has circulated ministerial notes for inter-ministerial consultation to expand access to reliable energy and improve energy security in the country.

The bilateral agreements will be signed with Saudi Arabia and the UAE for the mega projects, once the Cabinet approves the decision, Union Minister for Power and New and Renewable Energy Raj Kumar Singh told Mint.

    MS Education Academy

“The India-UAE agreement is in its final stages,” said the minister.

In January 2023, India and the UAE announced plans to conduct a feasibility study for connecting their power grids via undersea cables as part of the One Sun, One World, One Grid initiative.

On the other hand, the interconnection with Saudi Arabia is currently being reviewed, Singh stated.
