  • CBI again postpones Kadapa MP’s questioning in Viveka murder case

CBI again postpones Kadapa MP’s questioning in Viveka murder case

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) postponed questioning of Kadapa MP Y.S. Avinash Reddy in Y.S. Vivekananda Reddy murder case to Tuesday evening as his petition for anticipatory bail was being heard by the Telangana High Court.

The CBI, which had directed Avinash Reddy to appear before the CBI regional office at 10.30 a.m., postponed the hearing on the suggestion of the High Court.

The agency had earlier deferred the MP’s questioning on Monday in view of the hearing.

    MS Education Academy

The High Court was hearing the arguments of counsels of Avinash Reddy, CBI and Vivekananda Reddy’s daughter Suneetha Reddy, who has impleaded in the case.

Avinash Reddy’s counsel pleaded to the court to direct the CBI not to arrest him. The agency submitted to the court that if necessary they will arrest Avinash Reddy.

The CBI counsel told the court that they suspect Avinash Reddy’s involvement in the murder conspiracy. The central agency believes that he played a key role in causing disappearance of evidence from the scene of the crime.

Suneetha Reddy has also filed an impleading petition in the High Court. She prayed to the court to hear her arguments before pronouncing its judgment.

The MP fears arrest in the case as his father Y.S. Bhaskar Reddy was arrested in the case on Sunday. In its petition seeking custody of Bhaskar Reddy, the CBI had named Avinash Reddy as co-accused.

Bhaskar Reddy, who was arrested in Pulivendula on Sunday, was brought to Hyderabad and produced before a magistrate, who remanded him to judicial custody for 14 days.

The agency has alleged that Bhaskar Reddy along with co-accused D. Siva Shankar Reddy, Gangi Reddy, G. Uday Kumar Reddy and Avinash Reddy played key roles in causing disappearance of evidence from the scene of murder. For the first time, the CBI has named Avinash Reddy as accused in the case.

Avinash Reddy, cousin of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, has been questioned by the CBI four times during the last couple of months. However, his statements were recorded as a witness.

Following his father’s arrest on Sunday, Avinash Reddy alleged that the CBI ignored some key facts in the case and was treating them as the accused.

Vivekananda Reddy, brother of former Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy and uncle of present Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, was found murdered at his residence in Pulivendula of Kadapa district on the night of March 15, 2019, a few days before the elections.

The 68-year-old former state minister and former MP was alone at his house when unidentified persons barged in and killed him.

The CBI took over the investigation into the case in 2020 on the direction of Andhra Pradesh High Court while hearing a petition of Vivekananda Reddy’s daughter Suneetha Reddy, who raised suspicion about some relatives.

The Supreme Court transferred the case to Hyderabad in November last year while observing that doubts raised by Suneetha Reddy about getting a fair trial and investigation in Andhra Pradesh were reasonable.

  • Pakistan’s Election Commission postpones Punjab elections to October 8

Pakistan’s Election Commission postpones Punjab elections to October 8

    [ad_1]

Lahore: Pakistan’s electoral watchdog on Wednesday postponed election in the Punjab province — originally scheduled for April 30 to October 8 — citing an abysmal law and order situation in the country.

The assemblies in Punjab and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces were dissolved on January 14 and 18 respectively by the erstwhile governments of Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party.

In its order, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) said that it “hereby withdraws the election programme and fresh schedule will be issued in due course of time with poll date on October 8.”

The ECP said the decision was taken after briefing of the government and different departments and intelligence agencies informed that “the law and order situation in the country don’t permit to hold elections at any province at this point of time.”

On March 1, Pakistan’s Supreme Court ruled that elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces should be held within 90 days of the dissolution of the assemblies, as stipulated by the Constitution.

In the letter to President Dr Arif Alvi, the ECP proposed April 30 as the date for elections in Punjab.

Meanwhile, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governor Ali fixed May 28 as the date for polls in the province but subsequently backtracked on his decision while calling for “key challenges” to be addressed before a new date is announced.

Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah on Wednesday said there were differing opinions on conducting elections, and parliament needed guidance from the government and other institutions in this regard.

“Regarding the 90-day limit in the Constitution, I mentioned that April 30 is beyond that timeframe but have elections not been held after 90 or 60 days in the past?” Sanaullah asked.

Khan, 70, who came to power in 2018, is the only Pakistani Prime Minister to be ousted in a no-confidence vote in Parliament in April 2022.

Since his ouster, he has stepped up the ante on the ruling coalition to announce snap polls.

  • Imran postpones poll rally till March 13 after govt imposes Section 144

Imran postpones poll rally till March 13 after govt imposes Section 144

    [ad_1]

Islamabad: PTI chief Imran Khan on Sunday postponed his party’s election rally in Lahore till March 13 after the interim government in Punjab province imposed Section 144.

Khan, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, on Saturday night had announced a rally today (Sunday).

However, citing concerns in the wake of a Pakistan Super League (PSL) match in Lahore, the district administration banned public gatherings invoking Section 144 in the city, Dawn reported.

Protesting the interim government’s move, the PTI approached Election Commission of Pakistan, and later postponed the rally.

Taking to Twitter, Khan posted: “It seems again Sec 144 has been imposed illegally solely on PTI election campaign as all other public activities are ongoing in Lahore. Only Zaman Park has been surrounded by containers & heavy police contingent. Clearly, like 8 March, Punjab CM & police want to provoke clashes.”

“To file more sham FIRs against PTI ldrshp & workers & to use as pretext for postponing elections. Elec Schedule has been announced so how can Sec 144 be imposed on pol activity? I AM TELLING ALL PTI WORKERS NOT TO FALL INTO THIS TRAP. Hence we have postponed rally till tomorrow,” his tweet read.
