Same-sex marriage: Hearing on April 24 postponed

New Delhi: The Supreme Court Constitution Bench will not be hearing various petitions seeking legal recognition of same-sex marriage on Monday due to the indisposition of two judges who are part of the five-judge bench.
Five Judge Bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud on Thursday announced that the constitution bench will hear the various petitions seeking legal recognition of same-sex marriage from Monday to Friday.
But the SC has now notified that on account of the indisposition of Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice S Ravindra Bhat, it will not able to hold the court on April 24.

The Constitution Bench comprising the Chief Justice, Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Justice Ravindra Bhat, Justice Hima Kohli and Justice PS Narasimha is dealing with a batch of petitions pertaining to ‘marriage equality rights for LGBTQAI+ community’.
The Constitution Bench started hearing the petitions on April 18.
Various petitions are being dealt with by Supreme Court seeking legal recognition of same-sex marriage. The Centre has opposed the petitions. One of the petitions earlier raised the absence of a legal framework which allowed members of the LGBTQ+ community to marry any person of their choice.
According to the petition, the couple sought to enforce the fundamental rights of LGBTQ+ individuals to marry any person of their choice and said that “The exercise of which ought to be insulated from the disdain of legislative and popular majorities”.
The petitioners, further, asserted their fundamental right to marry each other and prayed for appropriate directions from this Court allowing and enabling them to do so.

After LS disqualification, Rahul’s first public meet postponed to April 16

Bengaluru: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s event, which was supposed to take place on April 10 has been postponed further and now it will be held on April 16 at Kolar, Karnataka Congress unit president D K Shivakumar said on Saturday.
Gandhi had planned to address people on April 10 at the same place where his speech during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections had led to his disqualification from the lower house of the Parliament, Shivakumar told reporters here.
However, due to the Assembly election-related works and the selection of candidates, the party leaders requested he extends it by a week.

“We had requested Rahul Gandhi to extend the public meeting by a week and he gave his consent. Gandhi and all leaders will come on April 16 for the Jai Bharat event at Kolar,” Shivakumar said.
He added that this will be Gandhi’s first public address in Kolar after his disqualification from the Lok Sabha. He also said that Gandhi’s disqualification was an insult to democracy.
“Cancelling the Lok Sabha membership of Rahul Gandhi, who had won with a margin of seven lakh votes, is an insult to the entire democracy,” Shivakumar said.
According to Congress sources, Gandhi’s event was earlier planned on April 5, which was changed to April 6. Then it was again planned on April 9, which clashed with Prime Minister’s Project Tiger event in Mysuru. The date was then rescheduled to April 10 and now once again it has been postponed to April 16.

Rahul Gandhi’s rally in Kolar postponed to April 9

New Delhi: A public rally of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in Kolar has now been postponed and is scheduled to be held on April 9.
Congress General Secretary (Organisation), K.C. Venugopal said, “@RahulGandhi will be in Kolar on April 9 and address the ‘Jai Bharat’ mega rally there. On April 11, he will visit Wayanad. He is the voice of the people, you can never silence him. This voice will only get louder and stronger.”
Gandhi, a former MP, was earlier scheduled to begin his campaign from Kolar for the Karnataka Assembly polls from April 5.
In 2019, Rahul during his Lok Sabha campaign had made a speech for which he was convicted in the Surat court in 2023.
Congress leaders say that beginning from Kolar is itself a manifestation that the party is ready to fight out the 2019 ‘Modi surname’ case politically and legally.
In Kolar, the Congress will attack the Karnataka government on the issue of corruption.
Randeep Singh Surjewala, Karnataka General Secretary In-charge, said the Congress will form the government in the state with the blessings of the people.
“As Karnataka goes to polls on May 10, Congress resolves to usher in a
new era of Peace-Progress-Prosperity and rebuild Brand Karnataka, restore Kannadiga pride, Congress guarantees to run a welfare-driven government at the Centre,” he added

The Election Commission on Wednesday announced the schedule for the Karnataka Assembly elections. The polling will be held on May 10 and the results will be declared on May 13.
The term of the 224-member Assembly ends on May 24.

It is hereby notified that the Computer Based Examinations for various posts scheduled from 16th March, 2023 to 5th April, 2023 are hereby deferred till further intimation.
Due to apparent controversy regarding hiring of a previously blacklisted\scompany for administering the recruitment exams and ongoing protests by the job aspirants, Jammu and Kashmir Services Selection Board
(JKSSB) has postponed all computer-based written examinations (CBT) scheduled to start from March 16th.

The Jammu and Kashmir Services Selection Board (JKSSB) has been facing intense criticism and protests from the aspirants who were demanding the scrapping or ban of the exam conducting agency Aptech Pvt. Ltd. hired by the board. As a result, the JKSSB board has postponed the Computer Based Examinations for various posts, scheduled from 16th March 2023 to 5th April 2023, until further notice.

Congressional briefing on Silicon Valley Bank failure postponed

“The Treasury Department and FDIC must communicate loudly and clearly that depositors will be protected,” he wrote. “The investors and executives of SBV should bear risk and lose. But this should not mean that workers go without paychecks on Monday or small businesses collapse.”
Most of Silicon Valley Bank’s deposits were not insured by the FDIC because they were over the $250,000 limit for federally backed deposits.
The bank’s depositors had included many Silicon Valley startups and health care businesses that are now scrambling to meet payroll demands after the bank’s failure.
The briefing comes as California lawmakers also brace for flooding in their state after heavy storms. The extreme weather could help alleviate drought conditions but could also bring heavy property damage in certain areas.
