Opinion poll shows Modi remains charismatic and popular in poll-bound Karnataka

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The final round of an exclusive opinion poll on the Karnataka Assembly elections conducted across the state conducted by C-Voter for ABP News reveals that Prime Minister Narendra Modi retains his charisma and popularity among the voters of the southern state.

While the poll still puts the Congress in the pole position, hectic and energetic campaigning by Modi during the last leg of vote seeking has improved the fortunes of the BJP.

In the opinion polls for the Assembly elections conducted during March and April, the BJP appeared quite far behind the Congress, both in terms of vote share and number of seats. But an intense last leg of campaigning by the Prime Minister has now ensured that the projected vote share of the BJP doesn’t drop below 36 per cent, the same it had garnered in the 2018 Assembly elections.

    MS Education Academy

Even BJP’s projected seat tally is now better than the numbers thrown up in March and April. In fact, in the Greater Bengaluru region, which elects 32 MLAs, the improvement is dramatic. From trailing behind the Congress earlier, the BJP seems to have turned the tables somewhat and is now projected to inch ahead of its rival in the projected seat tally.

While this last-minute effort by Modi may not be enough to help the BJP retain the state (Karnataka has a long history of changing governments), it augurs well for the party ahead of next year’s Lok Sabha elections.

In the 2018 Assembly elections, while the BJP emerged as the single largest party with 104 seats, it was nine short of a simple majority and a post-poll arrangement between the Congress and the JD(S) saw them form the government.

In the Lok Sabha elections a year after that, the BJP and candidates won 26 of the 28 seats in the state. A similar pattern was seen in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan about five years ago. The BJP lost the Assembly elections in all the three states in 2018, but swept all three in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

The 224-member Karnataka Assembly will go to the polls on May 10, and the results will be declared on May 13.

  • The morning routine backlash: you can get up at 5am – but it won’t make you popular

The morning routine backlash: you can get up at 5am – but it won’t make you popular

    [ad_1]

    Name: The 5-9 morning routine.

Age: New. It is a trend.

Really? Wasn’t it an 80s song, by Sheena Easton? And another 80s song, by Dolly Parton? And a film? And a common way of describing many people’s working day? No, that is 9 to 5. We’re talking about 5-9. Actually, we’re talking about the 5-9 backlash, but first we had better deal with what 5-9 is.

    Not 8.55, then? Nope.

Nor a children’s clothes size? No, it’s the four hours before 9, so from 5am to 9am.

Not a time I know much about, but go on. Then this could be for you. The 5-9 routine has become a thing.

What kind of thing? A lifestyle one.

Where? TikTok, obviously. It’s about getting up at the crack of dawn, doing your fitness thing, your yoga, a cold water wild swim, beauty routines, a super-healthy breakfast, followed by a bit of drumming, Duolingo, perhaps decluttering the house, all before work …

    That’s really a trend? A big one.

How big? More than 200m views on the platform.

It’s making me feel tired and depressed just thinking about it. Well, it turns out, it’s not just you.

Yay! Go on. So, @margaretskiff posted her own “5-9” video, which shows her waking up bleary-eyed when the alarm goes off at 8.30am, then spending half an hour lying in bed squinting at social media and playing games on her phone.

Totally relatable. And that takes her to 9, right? Yeah, she pulls a crumpled sweatshirt over the clothes she slept in, wraps a blanket around herself and hops the two steps to her desk, where she sits down to work.

    Many views? More than 3m.

Not bad. Not 200m though, is it? More than 400,000 likes, too …

Including me; I like it. The comments show she is not alone out there. “I feel at home here,” and: “My people,” are among the comments.

Any breakfast? Not in this one, but she has a bagel in another video. Another anti 5-9er, @cameraonkira, makes her breakfast sandwich before taking it back to bed and settling down for a bit of Netflix.

Love it. It’s almost as if a lot of what you see on platforms such as TikTok and Instagram is a scroll through an unattainable dream, so it’s reassuring to stumble across something that looks as if it’s happening on the planet you inhabit. Hey, you could be on to something there.

Do say: “Alexa, cancel the alarm!”

Don’t say: “Sleep? Sleep is for wimps.”

  • Modi popular among Chinese netizens, nicknamed ‘Modi the immortal’: Article

Modi popular among Chinese netizens, nicknamed ‘Modi the immortal’: Article

    [ad_1]

Beijing: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is reverentially called ‘Modi Laoxian’ meaning ‘Modi the immortal’ by Chinese netizens, a rare respectful reference to an international leader, notwithstanding the bitter India-China border row, according to an article published in the US-based strategic affairs magazine The Diplomat.

In the article – ‘How is India viewed in China?’, Mu Chunshan, a journalist known for analysing Chinese social media, especially Sina Weibo, (akin to Twitter in China), also said that most Chinese feel that India led by Modi can maintain a balance among major countries in the world. Sina Weibo has over 582 million active users.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi has an unusual nickname on the Chinese internet: Modi Laoxian. Laoxian refers to an elderly immortal with some weird abilities. The nickname implies that Chinese netizens think Modi is different even more amazing than other leaders,” he said.

They point to both his dress and physical appearance, seen as Laoxian-like, and some of his policies, which are different from India’s previous ones, Mu said.

On India’s relations with other major countries, he said, whether it is Russia, the United States, or Global South countries, India can enjoy friendly ties with all of them, which is “very admirable” to some Chinese netizens.

“So the word ‘Laoxian’ reflects the complex sentiment of Chinese people toward Modi, combining curiosity, astonishment, and perhaps a dash of cynicism,” Mu wrote.

“I have been doing international media reports for nearly 20 years and it is rare for Chinese netizens to give a nickname to a foreign leader. Modi’s nickname stands out above all others. Clearly, he has made an impression on Chinese public opinion,” he said.

Besides hosting Chinese President Xi Jinping and former Premier Li Keqiang, since he came to power in 2014, Modi also held two rare informal summits with Xi, 69, in Wuhan and later in Mamallapuram near Chennai, which raised expectations of improvement in the relations between the two Asian giants.

The Sino-Indian relations hit the bottom following aggressive military actions by the Chinese military in eastern Ladakh violating the agreements to resolve the border dispute leading to a nearly three-year-long military standoff.

The two countries have held 17 rounds of high-level military commanders’ talks to resolve the standoff.

India has been maintaining that ties with China cannot be normal unless there is peace in the border areas.

Modi is also well known in China as he interacted with the Chinese public through his account on Sina Weibo which he opened in 2015 and had over 2.44 lakh followers.

However, he quit Weibo in July 2020 after the Indian government moved to ban 59 Chinese Apps to send a “strong message at the border, on the economic front and at a personal level too,” according to BJP general secretary (organisation) B L Santhosh.

In his article, Mu says Chinese views of India are very complicated but generally based on a sense of superiority and self-confidence.

Significantly, he writes that the Chinese netizens believe China’s attempts to use its “all-weather ally”, Pakistan as “unrealistic” as the gap between the two South Asian neighbours is “getting wider”, an apparent reference to the political and economic meltdown Pakistan is currently experiencing.

“The facts over the past nine years have proved that China and India have more room for cooperation. For example, China’s trade with India is worth USD115 billion a year far more than China’s trade with Pakistan, which sits at around USD 30 billion”, Mu wrote.

“Of course, China has not forgotten Pakistan. But many Chinese netizens have a realistic view of the two South Asian neighbours. The argument is very sober: The idea of using Pakistan to restrain India is becoming more unrealistic because the gap between Pakistan and India is getting wider”, he said.

He also writes about Chinese apprehension about India’s growing popularity with western countries, especially with the US and New Delhi’s handling of the Ukraine crisis without disrupting its close ties with Russia and America.

“This is just one example of a widespread perception in China: India is the favourite of the West, while China has become the target of the West. How did India manage this? Why is India’s circle of international friends so big?” was the question debated by the Chinese netizens.

Most Chinese people feel a sense of superiority and self-confidence vis-a-vis India and of course, most Chinese people don’t like to see India get too close to the United States, but they also think China and India can still cooperate, the article said.

Indian govt’s popular news agency ANI makes up sources, experts: Report

    [ad_1]

EU Disinfo Lab, a non profit based in Brussels has criticised ANI (Asian News International), a popular Indian news agency for allegedly using quotes and statements from made-up think tanks and experts. EU DisinfoLab, specialises in weeding out disinformation campaigns.

In their new report, “Bad Sources: How Indian news agency ANI quoted sources that do not exist”, they pulled up the organisation for referencing personalities and groups which were allegedly made up.

The EU DisinfoLab research, released on Thursday, is the third in a series of reports on a purported Delhi-based Srivastava Group-amplified Indian influence network based on fictitious NGOs and experts that were published in 2019 and 2020.

The most recent investigation focuses on the website of the International Forum for Rights and Security, a think tank with Canadian roots (IFFRAS). Around 200 times between May 2021 and January 2023, ANI cited IFFRAS.

Though IFFRAS was dissolved in 2014, its website remained online and was being updated. EU DisinfoLab said that the same IP address hosted the IFFRAS website and other websites from the Srivastava group.

The report said that when it tried to trace the speakers mentioned on the website, they discovered that they were mostly non-existent.

“Our guess is that the sole purpose of the IFFRAS is to produce content that can be covered by ANI and then republished widely throughout the Indian press,” said the report.

The EU DisinfoLab researchers also looked into other foreign experts at ‘think tanks’ that were mentioned by ANI.

They discovered the Policy Research Group (POREG), whose “geopolitical specialists” were frequently cited by ANI on topics including Chinese foreign policy and Pakistan’s army doctrines.

According to the study, despite repeated attempts to reach these experts—names like “James Duglous Crickton,” “Magda Lipan,” or “Ms. Valentin Popescu,” depending on the spelling—they did not appear to be available.

A third organisation that ANI began quoting findings from in 2021, was the Center of Political and Foreign Affairs (CPFA), a research group with French roots that is legitimately registered in Hong Kong. However, ANI was also disseminating information that EU DisinfoLab “could not attribute to genuine individuals” in addition to the CPFA team’s reliable findings.

The latest EU DisinfoLab report was released in conjunction with the “Story Killers” project to investigate the disinformation-for-hire-industry. Coordinated by French non-profit Forbidden Stories, the project hopes to continue the work of slain journalist Gauri Lankesh.

  • DeSantis blasts immigration laws once popular with Florida Republicans

DeSantis blasts immigration laws once popular with Florida Republicans

    [ad_1]

Included in DeSantis’ proposal is the repeal of a 2014 law sponsored by Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nunez when she was a member of the Florida House that offered out-of-state tuition vouchers to some eligible Dreamers, those brought to the United States illegally at a young age. It applied to Dreamers who attended a Florida high school for at least three years.

The proposal received wide-ranging Republican support at the time, including from CFO Jimmy Patronis, DeSantis-appointed Education Commissioner Manny Diaz, former House Speaker Jose Oliva — whom DeSantis recently appointed to the Board of Governors of the State University System — and Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson, each of whom were members of the Legislature when lawmakers first approved the bill.

None returned a request seeking comment about whether they support repealing the law or if they regret their 2014 vote.

At Thursday’s press conference, DeSantis touted Florida’s low cost college or state university system but said the law still needs to be repealed to keep down tuition costs.

“If we want to hold the line on tuition, then you have got to say ‘you need to be a U.S. citizens living in Florida,’” DeSantis said. “Why would we subsidize a non-U.S. citizen when we want to make sure we can keep it affordable for our own people?”

Then-Gov. Rick Scott, who is now a Republican U.S. senator, signed the proposal in what was seen as a signal Florida Republicans had shifting views on immigration issues as they tried to make inroads with Latino voters, who have a much larger political footprint in Florida than in most states. Since DeSantis took office, however, he has rewired that approach, taking a much harder-line stance on immigration as he gains political support, including with Latino voters. In 2022, DeSantis won reelection by a historic 19.4 percentage point margin, including winning the Latino vote over Democrat Charlie Crist.

Scott defended the earlier legislation when asked about it in Tampa on Thursday.

“It’s a bill that I was proud to sign. I believe in it. I believe that these individuals ought to have the opportunity to live their dreams in this country,” Scott said.” It’s a bill I would sign again today.”

DeSantis last year drew widespread criticism from Democrats and immigration advocates after he transported nearly 50 migrants, mostly Venezuelans, from Texas to Martha’s Vineyard, a move opponents called a political stunt. Since then, the governor persuaded the Legislature to expand the program.

DeSantis’ proposal would also repeal a second law passed in 2014 with bipartisan support that allowed noncitizens to be admitted to the Florida Bar. The proposal was signed into law by Scott and got “yes” votes from Diaz, Nunez and Oliva. Simpson and Patronis, both of whom are seen as eyeing bids for governor in 2026, did not vote on the measure when legislators approved it on the House and Senate floors.

The law allows the Florida Supreme Court to admit noncitizens to the Florida Bar if they meet certain qualifications, including being brought to the United states as a minor and living in the country for a decade or longer. It was passed for José Manuel Godinez-Samperio, who came to the United States at age 9 with his mother and went on to graduate Florida State University College of Law with honors. He was in the House chamber when the bill passed and got direct shoutouts from Republican leadership at the time.

DeSantis said he has no idea why lawmakers at the time made that decision.

“I don’t know why they did this in Florida before I became governor, but they are letting illegal aliens become licensed attorneys in Florida,” DeSantis said at the press conference. “It’s, like, how could you be violating the law and then be practicing the law.”

During the press conference, he did not address the fact that a large number of elected Florida Republicans in the past supported some of the provisions he wants repealed and his office did not respond to questions about that situation.

Sen. Blaise Ingoglia, a Spring Hill Republican who was at the event and will be a likely sponsor of the bills, also did not return requests seeking comment.

DeSantis is also pushing lawmakers to require all Florida employers to use the E-Verify system, a federal database that allows employers to check workers’ employment status. During DeSantis’ first term, he pushed for universal E-Verify but that was opposed by the state’s business lobby. The bill lawmakers approved only required public employers to use the system.

Conservatives have been lobbying DeSantis to again try and expand the requirement to all employers, and DeSantis now has post-midterm Republican supermajorities in both chambers, which he says should make it easier to overcome opponents from the business and hospitality industries who are concerned changes could cut off their supply of cheap labor.

“It’s a different political context now having super majorities,” DeSantis said.

    DeSantis’ immigration package also includes:

    • Making it a third-degree felony to “transport, conceal, or harbor illegal aliens,” and a second-degree felony if the person being transported is a minor.
    • Mandating that hospitals collect data on the immigration status of patients and submit reports on costs associated with providing care to undocumented immigrants.
    • Requiring people registering to vote check a box affirming they are U.S. citizens and Florida residents.
    • Prohibiting local governments from issuing ID cards to unauthorized aliens and invalidating out-of-state licenses issued to unauthorized aliens.

Poodunnit: hunt for source of bacteria contamination that closed popular Gold Coast swimming hole

    [ad_1]

The hunt is on to find the source of a faeces-related bacterial outbreak that has indefinitely closed a popular swimming hole in the Gold Coast hinterland.

The Gold Coast city council closed the Currumbin rock pools on Monday afternoon after detecting elevated levels of enterococci, a bacteria caused by faecal contamination.

The natural waterhole remained closed on Thursday morning, with a spokesperson saying the specific source of the outbreak remained unknown, but that the council was “investigating several possibilities”.

Dr Yaoqin Hong from the Queensland University of Technology’s Centre for Immunology and Infection Control said the enterococcus was “a very common bowel microorganism” and that the source of the outbreak did not have to be human.

But, as a general rule, investigators would eye the usual suspects when an enterococci outbreak occurred in a popular swimming spot.

“The contamination source … [usually] comes from someone who had an accident in the pool,” he said. “But the source can come from anywhere.”

Social media is awash with other theories, with some pointing the finger at runoff from septic tanks and others concerned about a canine connection.

Many long-term locals also lamented overcrowding at what was once their secret waterhole, with several recalling drinking directly from the rainforest waterfall.

It is not the first time the rock pools have been closed due to faecal-related contamination, with several outbreaks over the last decade.

But this most recent caused painful memories for Michelle Ditton. Despite being the only member of her family who didn’t enter the water on a visit about seven years ago, Ditton was the only one to fall ill afterwards.

“There was a warning about the rock pools … so five of us had to be tested,” she said.

“The medication to treat it was out of my budget. I had to recover without medical intervention and was quite unwell for a time.”

Ditton said she can no longer remember the medical name for her infection, only that it was “a weird parasite long worm type thing”.

    skip past newsletter promotion

But Hong said rock pool swimmers should not be overly concerned about the outbreak.

“I know the news makes it look really scary, but it shouldn’t cause a big alarm,” he said.

Enterococci could cause urinary tract infections and other afflictions, but didn’t normally pose a serious health threat.

Instead the bacteria’s presence was an indication of poor water quality that could point to other “more nasty” bugs in the water. So closing the rock pools was the appropriate thing to do until conditions improved, Hong said.

At which point, swimmers were likely to return to the lush waterhole in droves, a commenter in the local newspaper claimed.

“I reckon people will still swim there underturd,” Garry wrote.
