Congress begins ‘ByeByeKCR’ campaign ahead of Telangana polls

Hyderabad: Telangana Congress President Revamnth Reddy has begun a campaign against the chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao ahead of assembly polls.
KCR, who visited Nizamabad district on Wednesday, said that he is getting old, which the TPCC caught and tweeted saying #ByeByeKCR.
Since then, the representatives and supporters of Congress are cited using the hashtag in their tweets.
Such campaigns have been used as a political strategy by opposition parties in the past decade and are often seen trending online and offline.
In the 2019 elections, slogans against the then Chandrababu government were raised saying ‘Bye Bye Babu’ where the YSR leaders including Jagan and Sharmila used to mention the slogan wherever they toured.
Revanth Reddy’s ‘Hath se Hath jodo yatra’ in the Bhimadevarapalli mandal of Hanmakonda district heard the party supporters chanting ‘Bye Bye KCR’ during the march.

Karnataka polls: ‘Winning an Assembly seat bigger challenge for Siddaramaiah’

Bengaluru: Even as Opposition leader Siddaramaiah is vying for the Chief Minister’s post if the Congress comes to power in Karnataka after the upcoming Assembly elections, ensuring his own victory in the polls has become a challenge for him, sources said.
According to sources, Siddaramaiah, who hails from the Kuruba community, was finding it difficult to pick a ‘suitable’ assembly seat from where he could be confident of winning.
Siddaramaiah represented Varuna constituency in Mysuru district and chose Chamundeshwari constituency to accommodate his son. After his term as the Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah chose to contest from Chamundeshwari and Badami constituencies.
He took that decision following an intelligence report that he would suffer a humiliating defeat in Chamundeshwari constituency following backlash from the Vokkaliga community. The report turned out to be true and Siddaramaiah suffered a humiliating defeat in Chamundeshwari constituency. He managed to win narrowly in Badami constituency.
Siddaramaiah, however, has emerged as a mass leader and the champion of the backward classes in the state.
He enjoys the support of a good number of MLAs. Many have already started batting for him for the post of Chief Minister, all while embarrassing and challenging Karnataka unit Congress president D.K. Shivakumar.
Siddaramaiah is the only leader to launch poignant attacks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, RSS and Hindutva forces. His supporters proudly claim that, unlike others, “Siddaramaiah could not be targeted by the ED, CBI and other central government agencies”.
However, Siddaramaiah also has the image of being anti-Lingayat and anti-Vokkaliga in Karnataka, which, according to sources, is costing him dearly.

The Congress leader is reportedly forced to find a constituency where OBCs and minority voters are more in numbers when compared to those of the Lingayat and Vokkaliga communities.
Karnataka BJP legislator and former minister K.S. Eshwarappa has said that “Siddaramaiah’s defeat will be ensured by his own party leaders in the upcoming assembly elections”.
“Has the high command asked Siddaramaiah to contest elections from the Kolar assembly segment? He (Siddaramaiah) has gone there fearing defeat,” Eshwarappa stated.
“You (Siddaramaiah) ensured the defeat of Dalit leader Dr. G. Parameshwar to rule him out from the CM’s race. The defeat of K.H. Muniyappa, was ensured through former speaker Ramesh Kumar,” he added.
“The Vokkaliga community and Dalits are waiting to defeat Siddaramaiah… since both these communities have dumped him, he is in full appeasement of Muslims,” Eshwarappa said.
Former CM B.S. Yediyurappa had in the assembly suggested to Siddaramaiah that he should contest from Badami constituency, where he won, to prove his credentials as a leader.
As assembly polls are nearing, the challenge of winning an assembly seat for Siddaramaiah is more challenging than ensuring numbers of MLAs to become Chief Minister if the Congress is voted to power, sources said.

Meghalaya polls: NPP emerges single-largest party with 26 seats

Shillong: The ruling National People’s Party (NPP) in Meghalaya emerged as the single-largest party in the state on Thursday, clinching 26 seats out of the 59 constituencies that went to polls on February 27, the Election Commission said.
However, it fell short of gaining a majority in the 60-member assembly, even as Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said his Meghalaya counterpart Conrad K Sangma sought the support of Union Home Minister Amit Shah in forming the new government.
The BJP, which had brought star campaigners, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, party chief J P Nadda and Shah, managed to win only two seats.
The United Democratic Party (UDP), which was NPP’s ally in the Sangma government, emerged the second-largest party, winning 11 constituencies. It had won only six seats in the 2018 polls.
The Congress and the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC won five seats each.
The newly formed Voice of the People Party (VPP) won four seats, while the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP), the People’s Democratic Front won two seats each. Two Independent candidates also emerged victorious.
Sangma won from the South Tura seat by a margin of 5,016 votes, while his deputy Prestone Tynsong won the Pynursla seat by 8,140 votes, the EC data showed.
“I thank the people of our state for having voted for our party. We are grateful to them. We are still short of the numbers and will decide on the way forward later,” the CM said.

His Assam counterpart said Nadda has advised the Meghalaya unit of the BJP to support the NPP when it forms the next government in the state.
“Sri @SangmaConrad , Chief Minister of Meghalaya, called @AmitShah ji, Hon’ble Home Minister, and sought his support and blessings in forming the new Government,” Sarma tweeted.
“Adaraniya Sri @JPNadda ji , the national president of the @BJP4India has advised the state unit of BJP, Meghalaya to support the National People’s Party in forming the next government in Meghalaya,” the Assam CM added.
NPP spokesperson Ampareen Lyngdoh said the ruling party will have to seek the support of others to return to power for the second consecutive term.
Tynsong, after his victory was announced, told PTI, “In Meghalaya politics, individual candidates matter more than the party. It is the nominees who win the elections, not the party.”
“We expected to cross the magic number on our own, but did not foresee such a divided mandate,” he said.
Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma of the TMC won the Songsak seat by a margin of 507 votes, but lost the Tikrikilla constituency to NPP’s J D Sangma by 5,313 votes, according to the EC data.
State Congress president and MP Vincent H Pala lost to NPP’s Santa Mary Shylla by 1,828 votes in the Sutnga Saipung seat. Cabinet ministers James P K Sangma, Brolding Nongsiej, Hameltson Dohling and Dasakhiatbha Lamare were among candidates who lost.
Meghalaya Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh won the Mairang constituency by 155 votes, while BJP’s Sanbor Shullai clinched the South Shillong seat by 11,609 votes.
Counting of votes began at 8 am amid tight security.
Polling in the Sohiong seat was adjourned due to the death of a candidate.

BJP succeeds in maintaining momentum in its favour in assembly polls

New Delhi: The maiden alliance of the Left and the Congress in Tripura and the emergence of TIPRA Motha as a dominant force in tribal seats did not prove enough to topple the BJP from power in the state as the ruling party’s development plank and ideological resonance surmounted local factors to deliver it another victory.
Among the three northeastern states that went to assembly polls, Tripura’s verdict was the most keenly watched due to the high stakes for three national parties – the BJP, Congress and the Left – and the results underscored the continuity of momentum in the saffron party’s favour despite the occasional setbacks it has suffered in state polls.
“If our 2018 victory was an endorsement of our ideological and development agenda, the win now shows its popular acceptance,” a BJP leader involved in the Tripura polls said.
The party had benefited from popular anger against the Left “misrule” for 25 years in 2018 and it has now received a positive mandate for the Centre and state government’s work, he added.
Party sources said the BJP, like in so many other state polls, succeeded in making its overarching ideological and developmental planks and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s popular appeal the central theme of its campaign which was also helped by an organisationally weakened opposition unable to match the ruling party either in firepower or in leadership charisma.
The winning momentum is important for the BJP as the crucial state of Karnataka is next headed for assembly polls, expected in May, followed by Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Mizoram later this year.
The BJP-led NDA, in power in 16 states, also romped home to a facile win in Nagaland, where Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party is the senior partner.
But its ambition of emerging as a bigger player in Meghalaya was thwarted as it was leading in only three seats against the two it held in the outgoing 60-member assembly.

BJP leadership had accused Chief Minister Conrad Sangma-led government of being the country’s “most corrupt” state dispensation but the two parties may now agree to do business together again. The BJP was part of his government but parted ways before the polls.
It may be a junior partner in Nagaland and remains a minor player in Meghalaya but the results in the two states will be helpful for the party in making ideological points, its leaders noted.
Accused by rivals of being “anti-minority”, the BJP has succeeded in improving its vote share to nearly 19 per cent from 15.3 per cent in Nagaland and bagging over nine per cent votes in Meghalaya.
Both are largely Christian populated states and its performance will give the BJP a handy weapon to beat back the charge.
However, it is the Tripura results which will matter the most to the BJP as its win has underlined popular acceptance of the party in this erstwhile Left bastion which it won for the first time in 2018.
Its vote share as well as seat tally have come down but things were worse for the Left-Congress alliance.
The BJP appeared headed to win 32 seats in the 60-member assembly, down from 36 in 2018. The combined tally for the opposition alliance was 14 while the CPI(M) had won 16 seats in 2018 when it had fought on its own. The Congress failed to open its account last time.
A point for concern, however, for the BJP will be the rise of Pradyut Debbarma-led TIPRA Motha and the decline of its tribal ally in IPFT, which could win a lone seat this time.
The BJP also suffered the embarrassment of the loss of its own most prominent tribal face and Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Dev Varma to his TIPRA Motha rival Subodh Deb Barma.
Party sources said their leadership may explore the probability of an alliance with Pradyut Debbarma, scion of erstwhile royal, if he gives up on his demand for a separate state of “Greater Tipraland”.

BJP to go alone in Telangana polls: Bandi Sanjay

Hyderabad: The BJP will go alone in the Telangana Assembly elections scheduled to be held towards the end of this year, party’s state president Bandi Sanjay Kumar said on Wednesday.
A day after Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP president J.P. Nadda and other central leaders held a crucial meeting with the party’s state leaders in Delhi, Sanjay made it clear that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will have no alliance with any party in the state.
He reiterated that the BJP will come to power in Telangana as the people want a change and see the BJP as the only alternative to Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS).
Sanjay was addressing the BJP Mahila Morcha meeting at the party’s state headquarters on Wednesday.
He claimed that Telangana state had become a reality with the support of the BJP. He said people were asking if Telangana state was carved out for the family of Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR).
Sanjay, who is also a Member of Parliament, dared KCR to come forward for a debate on the development of Telangana under his rule.
The BJP leader alleged that people were surprised over the financial position of the state. He alleged that KCR has put a debt burden of Rs 6 lakh on every family.
“A situation has come wherein the government has no money to pay salaries to employees,” he said.

Sanjay also slammed the BRS government for its indifference to the growing number of murders and rapes in the state. People doubt whether the state has a home minister, he said.
The BJP leader called for checking consumption of liquor in the state, saying this is the main cause of murders and rapes.
Sanjay said that while BJP made tribal woman Droupadi Murmu President of India, BRS was responsible for the death of tribal woman Dr. Preethi.
He was referring to the suicide of post-graduate student Preethi of Kakatiya Medical College in Warangal due to alleged by her senior Dr. M.A. Saif.
“If the BJP comes to power in Telangana, bulldozers will be used on those who commit crime against women, as crimes are used in Uttar Pradesh,” he said.
Branding state minister K.T. Rama Rao as ‘Twitter Tillu’, Sanjay said the BRS leader was unable to digest the fact that a corporator had become president of the BJP’s state unit.

‘Won’t contest Telangana Assembly polls if…’: Raja Singh

Hyderabad: Goshamahal constituency MLA and suspended BJP leader Raja Singh on Tuesday made it clear that he won’t contest the Telangana Assembly polls if the party does not lift the suspension.
Claiming to be a loyal soldier of the BJP, the MLA said that he never caused any harm to the party, TOI reported.
Why was Raja Singh suspended?
The MLA was suspended after a row that was triggered following his remarks against Prophet Mohammed. Though, he replied to the show-cause issued by BJP, his suspension has not been revoked so far.
Now, as the Telangana Assembly is scheduled to be conducted in the current year, Raja Singh is confident that the suspension will be revoked.
However, sources told Siasat.com that the BJP state leadership reportedly interacted with some members of the Lodh Kshatriya community, which Raja Singh belongs to. Sources said at least two members of the community had evinced interest in contesting the elections this year from Goshamahal if the party gives them a ticket.
Nevertheless, community elders, however, said they don’t want any conflict in the community over politics.
Telangana Assembly polls 2023
Assembly elections in Telangana are scheduled to be held at the end of this year for 199 constituency seats. In the last assembly elections, the main parties were Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), Indian National Congress (INC), and BJP.
After the polls that were held nine months earlier that the scheduled date, TRS which is now BRS formed the government by winning 88 seats out of 119 improving its seat share by 25.

In the polls, the seat share of INC decreased from 21 to 19 whereas, AIMIM managed to win seven seats.
Meanwhile, BJP which tried hard to form a government in the elections managed to win only a single seat. Only Raja Singh won from the Goshamahal Assembly constituency. The party’s seat share dipped from five to one.
FIR registered against Raja Singh for ‘provocative’ speech in Latur
Meanwhile, a case has been registered against Raja Singh for alleged hate speech in Maharashtra’s Latur city.
He has been accused of delivering an inflammatory address to create communal tension, at an event on February 19 to celebrate the birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, an official said.
The official said that the Shivaji Nagar police station on Monday booked Singh under Indian Penal Code sections, including 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence and language).

Exit Polls: BJP to retain Tripura, Meghalaya sees four-cornered contest

New Delhi: With voting for the assembly polls in Meghalaya and Nagaland ending on Monday amid tight security, all eyes are now on the results.
In Meghalaya, polling was held at 3,419 polling stations across 59 Assembly constituencies, while in Nagaland voting was held in 59 out of 60 Assembly constituencies.
The Matrize exit poll for Meghalaya predicted 21-26 seats for the NPP, 6-11 seats to the BJP, 8-13 to the TMC, 3-6 for the Congress and 10-19 for others.
In Meghalaya, it continued to be a four-cornered contest. In the last Assembly polls, although the Congress had emerged as the single largest party winning 21 seats, the Conrad Sangma-led National People’s Party, which had won 20 seats, had managed to form the government following an alliance with the BJP.
However, this time, with no pre-poll alliance in place, the Congress, BJP, NPP and TMC are looking to win a majority on their own.
In Nagaland, in 2018 the NDPP-BJP alliance had formed the government. The Naga People’s Front (NPF), which had emerged as the single largest party in the last Assembly polls, faces a tough time as many of its leaders have since quit to join the NDPP.
The Matrize exit poll predicts the BJP+NDPP will win 35-43 seats, the Congress will get 1-3 seats, the NPF might get 2-5, the NPP 1 and 6-11 for the others in Nagaland.
Tripura voted on February 16, recording nearly 88 per cent polling.

The India Today exit poll has predicted that the BJP will win 36-45 seats in the Tripura Assembly. The BJP-led alliance is likely to retain power, shows the India Today-Axis My India poll.

Nagaland polls: Over 82% turnout recorded, stray incidents of violence reported

Kohima: Over 82.42 percent of Nagaland’s 13.16 lakh voters cast their votes on Monday in the Assembly polls, held in 59 of the 60 constituencies amid tight security, election officials said.
Polling percentage was 83.85 in the 2018 Assembly polls, and the 2023 turnout is likely to increase after compilation of the reports of the Returning Officers, the officials said.
According to election officials, voting was largely peaceful across the northeastern state except some stay incidents of violence, including stone pelting and minor clashes. No major untoward incident has been reported so far.
In Akuk village under the Bhandari Assembly constituency in Wokha district, supporters of a candidate attacked the rival party workers using sharp-edged weapons in which three persons were injured.
Voting started at 7 a.m. in 2,291 polling stations, manned by 11,500 staff, and enedd at 4 p.m.
Chief Electoral Officer, V. Shashank Shekhar said that around 13.16 lakh voters, including 6,55,144 women, were slated to decide the electoral chances of 183 candidates, including four women.In the 2018 Assembly polls, 190 candidates, including five women, had contested the elections.
In the polls, BJP candidate Kazheto Kinimi was re-elected unopposed from the Akuluto Assembly constituency after his only opponent and Congress nominee Khekashe Sumi withdrew his candidature.
To ensure a free, fair and violence-free election, the Union Home Ministry, at the request of the state government, had provided 305 companies of Central Armed Police Force, while the state security forces have also been deployed across the mountainous state.

As many as 12 parties comprising national and state parties are in the fray. The ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party and its ally Bharatiya Janata Party, and the opposition Congress and the Naga People’s Front (NPP) are the main contenders in the poll battle.
The Congress, which governed the state till 2003, has fielded 23 candidates, while the Naga People’s Front is contesting 22 seats. Other parties, including the RJD, Ram Vilas Paswan faction of the LJP, National People’s Party headed by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, and the NCP were also in the fray. There are 19 independent candidates in the fray as well.
Chief Minister and senior NDPP leader Neiphiu Rio (Northern Angami-II), Deputy Chief Minister and BJP legislature party leader Yanthungo Patton (Tyui), former Chief Minister Taditui Rangkau Zeliang (Peren), Nagaland unit BJP president Temjen Imna Along (Alongtaki), Nagaland Congress president Kewekhape Therie (Dimapur) are seeking re-election.
Non settlement of decades old Naga political imbroglio, demand for a separate state –‘Frontier Nagaland’ – unemployment, illegal drug peddling and menace, besides various anti-incumbency factors were the main issues in the elections.
The counting of votes will be held in Nagaland on March 2 along with Meghalaya and Tripura.

Countdown begins for Meghalaya Assembly polls, battle for Shillong in focus

Shillong: After the high-pitched election campaigning, Meghalaya is all set to decide its political fate in the Assembly polls that are to be held on Monday.
Polling will be held at 3,419 polling stations across 59 Assembly constituencies in the state. The voting will begin at 7 am and continue till 4 pm on Monday.
Of the 60 Assembly constituencies in Meghalaya, 36 constituencies fall in Khasi, Jaintia Hills region while 24 are in Garo Hills region.
Significantly, however, polling for the Sohiong Assembly constituency was postponed following the demise of the state’s former Home Minister and United Democratic Party (UDP) candidate from the seat HDR Lyngdoh.
There are over 21 lakh electorates (21,75,236) of which 10.99 lakh are women and 10.68 lakh are male voters. In Meghalaya, the woman voters are in higher numbers than their male counterparts. There are about 81,000 first-time voters in the state.
As many as 369 candidates are in the fray of which 36 are women.
Of the total 3,419 polling stations, 120 will be all women-managed polling stations, 60 are model polling stations and another 60 will be PWD polling stations.
The Election Commission has deployed 119 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) in Meghalaya.

Chief Electoral Officer, Meghalaya FR Kharkongor said 640 polling stations are identified as ‘vulnerable’, 323 are ‘critical’ and 84 are identified as both.
The poll panel on Saturday ordered the sealing of Meghalaya’s International border with Bangladesh till March 2.
Meghalaya shares a 443 km border with Bangladesh and 885 km with Assam.
Chief Electoral Officer, Meghalaya FR Kharkongor, told ANI that, Meghalaya’s International border with Meghalaya and the state border with Assam have been sealed.
“We have taken preventive measures to ensure a free and fair election in the State. Section 144 of CrPC has been imposed along the international bordering areas in the state,” Kharkongor said.
Meanwhile, the district magistrate of East Khasi Hills district on Friday issued an order that movement of individuals will remain strictly prohibited within a one km radius of the India-Bangladesh border of East Khasi Hills district between February 24 and March 2.
The district administration of East Khasi Hills district has also imposed Section 144 of CrPC along the bordering areas.
To ensure a free and fair election, Election Commission has banned publication of exit poll projections in Meghalaya from 7 am on Friday to 7 pm on the polling day — February 27.
The current term of the 60-seat Meghalaya Legislative Assembly will conclude on March 15.
The majority mark to form government in the state is 31.
In the 2018 Assembly polls, the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) got 19 seats, Congress bagged 21 seats and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) managed to win two seats. The United Democratic Party (UDP) grabbed six seats.
Though Congress emerged as the single largest party, the government was formed by the NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) with support from UDP, BJP and other regional parties.
This time, the BJP and NPP have not stitched any prepoll alliance and are going solo. BJP and Congress have fielded candidates in all the seats. The Trinamool Congress (TMC), which became the main opposition party in Meghalaya in 2021 following the defection of 12 Congress MLAs, became a formidable force, especially after former chief minister Mukul Sangma joined its ranks. The TMC has fielded candidates in 58 seats.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma is contesting from South Tura constituency. BJP fielded Bernard N Marak against the NPP chief. In Dadenggre, Congress candidate Chesterfield Sangma is contesting against NPP’s James Sangma.
Former CM Mukul Sangma is contesting from two seats — Tikrikilla and Songsak on Trinamool’s ticket. UDP leader Metbah Lyngdoh is contesting from Mairang. Further, NPP pitted Prestone Tynsong from Pynursla. UDP candidate Titosstar Well Chyne is contesting from Sohra.
TMC fielded Charles Pyngrope from Nongthymmai. BJP fielded Sanbor Shullai in South Shillong and Ernest Mawrie in West Shillong. Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh is NPP’s candidate from East Shillong.
In Pynthorumkhrah, BJP fielded Alexander Laloo Hek. UDP leader Lahkmen Rymbui is contesting from Amlarem. In Sutnga Saipung, Congress fielded Vincent H Pala. UDP candidate Kyrmen Shylla is contesting from Khliehriat.
The campaigning for Meghalaya polls ended on Saturday.
From NPP to BJP and Congress to Trinamool, parties showcased all might when it comes to campaigning. Be it poll promises or attacking contending forces with slogans, the contesting parties lost no chance to have a go at each other during the campaign phase.
The BJP showed its strength, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, party president JP Nadda and Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma holding rallies. PM Modi also held a roadshow in Shillong on Friday.
Rahul Gandhi, who was missing from the campaign scene in Tripura, held a rally in Shillong. Trinamool supremo Mamata Banerjee held public meetings in Meghalaya. TMC MP Mahua Moitra also canvassed for party candidates in the state.
The counting of votes will be done on March 2.
