The high-voltage campaign for the assembly elections in Karnataka ended on Monday with all party leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi holding 19 public meetings and six roadshows while Congress leader Rahul Gandhi camped in the state for 12 days.
Some of the key constituencies which will make a major mark in the polls are Varuna, Kanakapura, Shiggaon, Hubli-Darwad, Channapatna, Shikaripura, Chittapur, Ramanagara, and Chikmagalur.
Both BJP and Congress are fielding some of their top guns in the major constituencies. The BJP has also taken a chance by contesting 50 new faces in its 224 candidates list. This move by BJP to deny tickets to several senior leaders ultimately led to them quitting the party and joining Congress or JD(S).
One of them is former Karnataka Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar who was denied a ticket for the Hubli-Darwad West Assembly constituency then joined the Congress and will be contesting from the same constituency as the Congress candidate. It is a seat Shettar has won multiple times.
Meanwhile, Karnatakaโs Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai is yet another key candidate who is contesting from the Shiggaon constituency where he has won three consecutive terms.
Also, Varuna is yet another-eyed constituency. Congress leader and former chief minister Siddaramaiah is contesting from Varuna which is also his sitting seat with a winning streak starting from 2008.
BJPโs veteran leader and former CM BS Yediyurappa declined to field his son BY Vijayendra from Varuna though reports suggested that party workers wanted Vijayendra to be fielded against Siddaramaiah. BY Vijayendra will be contesting from Shikaripura which is a stronghold of his father BS Yediyurappa.
Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president DK Shivakumar will be contesting from Kanakapura. He is also the Congress partyโs chief ministerial candidate and he will be contesting against BJPโs Vokkaliga strongman and state revenue minister R Ashoka.

Congress chief Mallikarjun Khargeโs son Priyank Kharge will be contesting from the Chittapur Assembly constituency. He was also a former minister in the Siddaramaiah government.
Former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Deve Gowdaโs grandson Nikhil Kumaraswamy will be contesting from the Ramanagara Assembly constituency after hitting a loss in the 2019 elections. He will be facing Congress veteran HA Iqbal Hussain and BJPโs Gowtham Gowda.
Lastly, Chikmagalur is also among the major seats BJP will be eyeing during this poll. The party is fielding its national general secretary CT Ravi from the seat. Ravi has a winning streak from the Chikmagalur from 2004 and belongs to the Lingayat community giving him a stronghold in the constituency.
The BJP which is facing an air of anti-incumbency factor, is eyeing a second term in the state and has exuded confidence in retaining power with a full majority.
Significantly, Karnataka is the only state in the South where BJP is in power.
With top leadership including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah campaigning for the party, BJP has put all its might to strengthen its support base.
The Congress also conducted high-decibel campaigning with high promises with top leaders including Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.
The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) are some of the promises assured by the BJP in its manifesto.
Congress in its manifesto promises to bring back the Muslim quota, higher reservations for various classes, cash handouts and freebies.
The counting of votes will take place on May 13.

Kanpur: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday hit out at the Samajwadi Party, alleging those responsible for riots and curfews in Kanpur were its candidates in the urban local body polls.
On the last day of campaigning for the second phase of the civic polls, Adityanath addressed public meetings in Kanpur, Banda and Chitrakoot and appealed to voters to make the BJP victorious so that funds allocated by the Central and state governments for development and welfare schemes are utilized fully.
At an election rally in Kanpur, the chief minister said this city used to be known as the countryโs textile hub and largest industrial city, but its neglect by the previous government was โknown to everyoneโ.

Referring to Kanpurโs once-booming illegal firearms industry, he said โkattasโ (countrymade pistols) were manufactured in Kanpur under the SP rule, but a new node of the Defence Corridor is being built here now.
As the countryโs centre for defence production, Kanpur is establishing a new identity, Adityanath said.
โThose who were responsible for riots and curfews in Kanpur and played with peopleโs faith in the past are today the candidates of the Samajwadi Party. The kind of remarks they have made on women and the holy epic โRamayanโ are not hidden from anyone,โ the chief minister said.
โThe urban local body election is not only (a medium) to elect a mayor but also about making all the BJP candidates victorious in all the wards,โ he said.
โThis election is not about hatred and personal comments. This election is about making your city a smart city, a safe city and one which has all the basic facilities,โ he said at the meeting.
Adityanath also referred to the work done by his government to clean river Ganga under the Namami Gange project.
โMother Ganga is our faith and our identity. Due to the neglect by the previous governments, 14 crore litres of sewage were discharged into Mother Ganga through the Sisamau drain. Under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the work on the Namami Gange project started.
โAt that time, there was a Samajwadi Party government in the state. The SP did not do any work for two years. In March 2017, the double-engine BJP government came to power, and today not even a single drop from the Sisamau drain falls into the Ganga,โ he said.
The chief minister also appealed to voters to add โa third engineโ to the โdouble-engine governmentโ and make Kanpur better again with basic facilities.
โDouble-engineโ is a term often used by BJP leaders to refer to the party ruling at the Centre and in a state.
Addressing another rally at Banda, the CM said that the Bundelkhand region has overcome the problem of barren and rugged terrain and is set to become a heaven on earth.
โIn the next four months, the work of providing pure tap water to every house in Bundelkhand is going to be completed,โ he said.
Adityanath said the entire Bundelkhand region is writing a โnew chapter of development todayโ and recalled that for years the unveiling of Maharana Pratapโs statue was stalled which he did when he visited Banda last time.
He said that prior to 2017, Bundelkhand faced a lot of problems related to drinking water, agriculture, employment, and security.
Earlier women had to bring water in pitchers from far-off places, but today through the Har Ghar Nal Yojana, tap water is being provided to every house in Bundelkhand and the exercise will be completed in the next four months, he said.
Addressing his last rally of the day at Chitrakoot, the CM said, โChitrakoot has been freed from dacoits criminals and is being re-established as a holy place of Sanatan Hinduism.โ
Taking a jibe at the opposition parties, he added: โDr. Lohia started the Ramayana fairs, but the Samajwadi Party, which does politics in the name of Dr. Lohia, says that Ram did not exist. Its leaders are making unsavoury comments on Tulsidasโ Ramcharitmanas as well.โ
Adityanath also said that the then Samajwadi Party government opened fire on the devotees of Lord Ram in Ayodhya.
Adityanath was referring to police firing on โkarsevaksโ gathered in Ayodhya on the saffron outfitsโ call in 1990 when SP patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav was the UP chief minister.
โTheir thinking is anarchic, opportunistic and dynastic. They canโt befriend a saint, but would readily garland a dacoit and allow them to exploit common people and traders,โ he remarked further.
The second and final phase of the urban local body polls in UP will be held on May 11. The counting of votes will take place on May 13.

Bengaluru: The absence of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in Karnataka in the run-up to the May 10 Assembly elections has disappointed the party cadres. It was also disheartening for the party supporters as they were expecting his presence in the state on May 8 โ the last day of poll campaigning.
The AAP has been trying to make its mark in Karnataka after forming governments in Delhi and Punjab. The party was looking to bag seats in Bengaluru and urban centres in Karnataka.
Some people had even predicted that the AAP would prove to be a formidable opponent to the BJP.

Kejriwal, the man who propelled AAP to power in the Delhi Assembly, and managed to put the party in power in Punjab, was expected to carry out an aggressive election campaign in Karnataka, especially when BJP heavyweights such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah reached almost every corner of the state and carried out an intensified election campaigning.
AAP leaders claimed that โBJPโs highhandedness and vindictive politics have restrained and forced Kejriwal from taking up extensive campaigning in Karnatakaโ.
Talking to IANS, Mohan Dasari, AAP Bengaluru City Working President, who is contesting from the C.V. Ramannagar seat in Bengaluru, said โthe vendetta politics by the BJP against AAP has restrained Kejriwal from entering the Karnataka election campaignโ.
โKejriwal had come in the month of April. The partyโs national leaders Raghav Chadha, Sanjay Singh, Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann and other ministers of the AAP also visited Karnataka. The elections are being taken seriously. Otherwise, no one would have come,โ he said.
โOur leader Manish Sisodia is in jail due to false cases. When no excise policy was implemented, where was the corruption?โ he questioned.
Dasari further said that Kejriwal showed how government hospitals and mohalla clinics can change the lives of middle class people and the poor class. โSince they were doing good work and the entire country was appreciative, they put these people behind bars with false cases,โ he said.
โThis election is being contested over local issues. People want a change. They were looking at good governance, good hospitals and homes for all, and we are working towards that,โ Dasari said.
