Assembly poll results in three northeastern states encouraging for BJP

    [ad_1]

The just released Assembly poll results in three northeastern states – Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Tripura are seen as semi-finals before next year’s parliamentary elections when Prime Minister Narendra Modi will seek a third consecutive term at the Centre. There are 25 Lok Sabha constituencies in the region. As they play the see-saw game; for some, like the BJP, they are encouraging, while for the Congress and the Left parties, it is a wake-up call.

The victory in the region is part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s long-term strategy, which has paid good dividends. When he became the PM in 2014, BJP was not in power in Northeastern states. Today, it has a firm foothold, as in Tripura or with its allies in the other two states.

The ruling BJP-Tripura (IPFT) coalition has retained power in Tripura for a second consecutive term but with reduced numbers. Its strength in Meghalaya and Nagaland remained strong.

    On the contrary, the once-dominant force of the Northeast, Congress, is now almost extinct. In 2014, the party was in power in five of the eight states in the region;

In Tripura, which had once been the citadel of the Left parties, the CPI(M) ‘s strength came down from 16 seats to only 11 seats. The Grand Old Party bagged five seats in Meghalaya and three in Tripura while drawing a blank in Nagaland for another term.

One cannot fault the parties for trying all permutations and combinations to stay in power and consolidate their position. The Left parties and Congress experimented with an unnatural pre-poll alliance in Tripura, but it did not work. Sadly, the two national parties dominating the region have steeply declined. Electoral politics is a game of numbers. While the saffron party chose the correct alliance, the two national parties miscalculated. Even the combined strength of Congress- CPI(M) did not get them electoral dividends.

Secondly, the results show the consolidation of the BJP and regional forces. Of the 119 seats in the three states, the regional powers won 83 percent (70 percent). The National People’s Party (NPP) emerged significantly in Meghalaya and the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) in Nagaland. The Tipra Motha, the second-largest party in Tripura, clearly indicates the growing clout of regional powers.

Thirdly, Modi’s Congress Mukth Bharat is becoming a reality. The two national parties – Congress and the CPI-M, which held sway in the region, have lost their grip. The Grand Old Party was decimated, and the Communists could not recover.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave an interesting explanation for the BJP’s victory. He said the reason is Triveni. “The first power is the work of the BJP govt, the second one is the work style of the BJP, and the last one is the karyakartas of the BJP,” he explained.

Moreover, the BJP communicated to the electorate well and talked about free ration, housing scheme, pay commission benefits and safety for women. Above all, the rise of the BJP in the region is also its drive and will to win.

BJP’s advantage is that the regional parties recognise the new churnings and are keen to align with the party in power at the Centre. As Modi had pointed out, Christians in Meghalaya and Nagaland have supported the party, belying the belief that minorities are against the BJP.

The BJP used its advantages and was ahead in its war chest, cadre strength and leadership. The Prime minister
and the other top leaders frequently visited the region that paid the dividend. In the perception war, the BJP won by communicating to the people that the Congress CPI-M was unholy as the two had remained opponents.

Above all, the party wanted to be known as a pan-national party and winning the Northeast was a significant achievement. But it cannot be complacent as the Lok Sabha polls are just months away, and the tempo has to be sustained. The BJP also had to deal with its factionalism.

    As for Congress, the party should have concentrated on the region and allied with the regional parties just as the BJP did. During the recent elections, the top leadership was complacent and campaigned less than the BJP. The party should stop living in the past glory. The Congress had strong regional leaders like Saikia who protected the party’s interests. Somewhere along the way, the party lost its connecti with the region;

Secondly, this round of polls was held under the leadership of Congress President Mallikharjun Kharge, whose
comment that northeastern states are small states and regional parties align with the party in power at the Centre reflects the party’s need for a transparent electoral strategy.

The best bet for the Congress is to strengthen regional units that are still active by nurturing strong state leaders and for the Left parties to make a course correction and woo youth voters

  • Change for a ‘new engine’: Kejriwal at first AAP poll rally in Karnataka

Change for a ‘new engine’: Kejriwal at first AAP poll rally in Karnataka

    [ad_1]

Davangere: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday appealed to the people of poll-bound Karnataka to give his Aam Aadmi Party a chance to give a corruption-free government for five years.

He also promised to give free electricity, quality education in government schools and good healthcare for the state’s people.

Addressing his maiden election public meeting in Karnataka, the AAP supremo said the party has zero tolerance for corruption as a minister and an MLA in party-ruled Punjab were jailed.

“We are staunch honest. We will give a corruption-free government. We will give free electricity, build good government schools and provide quality education,” Kejriwal said.

Assembly elections are due in Karnataka by May.

The AAP chief alleged that corruption in the state doubled since the last assembly polls in 2018 and urged the people to vote in a ‘new engine’ government by throwing out the ‘double-engine’ regime of the BJP.

Taking a dig at the ruling BJP in Karnataka, Kejriwal alleged that there is a 40 per cent commission government running in the state.

“The people of Karnataka are good but the leaders are not. They defamed and destroyed the state before the world. There is a 40 per cent commission government here in which 40 per cent cut is taken in every public work,” Kejriwal alleged.

In this context, he mentioned the recovery of Rs 8.23 crore unaccounted cash from Channagiri BJP MLA Madal Virupakshappa’s son Prashanth Kumar M V.

“Recently, Union Home Minister Amit Shah came to Karnataka and appealed to the people to give absolute majority in the upcoming assembly election so that a corruption-free government can be established in the state. Then, someone reminded him that already there is a BJP government in the state. I want to ask him why you could not eradicate corruption in the last four years,” the Delhi Chief Minister said.

He said the very next day after Shah flew back to Delhi, a BJP MLA’s son was caught with crores of unaccounted cash.

“That MLA and his son who hail from Davangere have not been arrested yet. Instead, Manish Sisodia was arrested,” Kejriwal said referring to Delhi Deputy CM Sisodia’s arrest by the CBI in the excise policy scam case.

He added that the raids at Sisodia’s house could not yield anything.

“They (BJP) alleged that Sisodia hushed up hundreds of crores of rupees. If that was true, then at least some crore of rupees should have been found but only Rs 10,000 was found,” Kejriwal claimed.

Taking a jibe at the BJP, the Delhi Chief Minister said the MLA in the dock may be given Padma Bhushan award next year. “All the criminals be it thieves, robbers, rowdies or rapists are absorbed in the BJP,” he further claimed.

After the BJP formed governments in Nagaland and Tripura and formed a coalition government in Meghalaya, Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his speech during the victory celebrations in Delhi asked people to stay away from ‘staunch honest people’, Kejriwal said.

“We did not fight the election in these three states but the Prime Minister mentioned us. He asked people to stay away from staunch honest people. He is afraid of us,” the Delhi Chief Minister said.

He ‘advised’ Modi not to be jealous of “AAP, the fastest growing party”. “Learn from us. You too become honest just like us,” the AAP supremo quipped.

Stating that AAP is a ‘staunch honest’ party, Kejriwal said raids never led to any recovery.

The Delhi Chief Minister said during the 2018 assembly elections in Karnataka, there was a ’20 per cent commission government’ in the state.

“The Prime Minister came to Karnataka and alleged that there is a 20 per cent commission government (during 2018 polls). He assured that he will eradicate corruption if the ‘double-engine government’ is formed in the state,” the AAP chief said.

He added that people trusted the Prime Minister’s words and formed the ‘double engine government’ (BJP government in the Centre and the state).

Corruption doubled in the state from 20 per cent to 40 per cent commission, the Delhi CM alleged.

Kejriwal said: “I will tour across the country and tell everyone not to form the double engine government. Corruption doubles in double-engine government. We need a new engine government.”

BJP MLA Virupakshappa has been booked while his son Prashanth, a government officer, was arrested by Lokayukta following raids in several places in the state.

The AAP chief added that the state contractors’ association president Kempanna wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the ministers in Karnataka are demanding 40 per cent commission.

Instead of addressing the octogenarian office-bearer’s grievance or taking action against the ministers and MLAs, the 82-year-old contractor was arrested in a defamation case, Kejriwal alleged.

The Delhi Chief Minister charged that 40 per cent commission is charged from contractors, private unaided schools and Maths (hermitage).

Kejriwal said in the last five years, Rs 20,000 crore was spent on repairing the pothole ridden Bengaluru roads but not even 20 potholes were filled.

Due to this indifferent government, over 100 people lost their lives due to potholes, he claimed.

Highlighting the corruption prevailing in the state, Kejriwal said bribes are taken to recruit police sub-inspectors and lecturers.

“Even the MLAs are on sale. The ruling party MLA has said that anyone who has Rs 2,500 crore can become the chief minister in Karnataka. Throw them out and give a chance to the staunch honest AAP,” the party chief said.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann too addressed the public meeting.

21 arrested in 18 incidents of poll violence in Tripura

    [ad_1]

Agartala: At least 21 people were arrested in 18 incidents of poll violence in Tripura since Thursday, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Gitte Kirankumar Dinakarrao said.

The state recorded 89.95 per cent voter turnout in the election held on Thursday, he said.

“18 incidents of violence were reported since February 16, and accordingly FIRs were lodged by the police. A total of 21 persons were arrested while notices were served to over 150 persons for their alleged involvement in the violence,” he told a press conference on Saturday.

Six incidents took place on the day of polling, the CEO said.

Sepahijala district reported most of the incidents at nine, he said.

He claimed that incidents of election-related violence drastically went down this time.

All sub-divisional magistrates in the state held meetings with the representatives of political parties on Saturday, seeking their help to maintain peace and tranquility, he said.

Two BJP candidates — Hemani Debbarma of Golaghati constituency and Pranajit Sinha Roy of Matabari — demanded repolling in some booths.

“However, the observers after checking the webcasting footage of these booths rejected their demands,” he said.

Meanwhile, a clash broke out between supporters of the BJP and Left-Congress in Unakoti district’s Kumarghat on Saturday, leading to the blockade of a highway, provoking a baton charge by the police.

Apart from injury to a few persons, a sub-inspector was hurt, a police officer said, adding that additional forces have been deployed in the area.

  • ‘Victory of democracy’: Kejriwal hails SC order over Mayoral poll

‘Victory of democracy’: Kejriwal hails SC order over Mayoral poll

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: After the Supreme Court (SC) on Friday said that nominated members cannot vote in the election for the Mayoral poll, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal described the order a “victory of democracy”.

The Chief Minister said that the apex court’s order has proved how the Delhi Lt. Governor (L-G) V.K. Saxena and the BJP were passing “illegal and unconstitutional orders”.

“SC order is victory of democracy. Many thanks to SC. Delhi will now get a Mayor after two-and-a-half months. It has been proved how the L-G and the BJP together were passing illegal and unconstitutional orders in Delhi,” Kejriwal added in a tweet.

A bench headed by the Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud also ordered issuance of a notice convening the first meeting of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi in 24 hours, fixing the date of election for the Mayor, Deputy Mayor and members of the Standing Committee.

The national capital is yet to elect the Mayor and Deputy Mayor after three previous meetings held on January 6 and 24 and February 6 were adjourned without holding the election, following a ruckus between BJP and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Councillors.

The last meeting of MCD Councillors held on February 6 was adjourned until the next date amid sloganeering and ruckus over the issues of aldermen voting rights.

MCD Presiding Officer had said that the polls to elect Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Standing Committee members will be held simultaneously. She had also added that as per DMC Act, alderman are eligible to vote in the Mayor and Deputy Mayor polls.

  • Indian American Nikki Haley launches 2024 US Presidential Poll campaign

Indian American Nikki Haley launches 2024 US Presidential Poll campaign

    [ad_1]

South Carolina: With the aim of moving from the “stale ideas and faded ideas” of the past, the Indian American leader Nikki Haley on Wednesday, announced her candidacy for the 2024 Republican Presidential nomination.

Addressing a public meeting, here in Charleston, the former South Carolina Governor said, “I have devoted my life to this fight and I am just getting started. For a strong America, for a proud America, I am running for the President of the United States of America.”

Nikki Haley said, “I stand before you as the daughter of immigrants, as the wife of a combat veteran, and as the mom of two amazing children. I’ve served as governor of the great state of South Carolina and as America’s ambassador to the UN. Above all else, I’m a grateful American citizen who knows our best days are yet to come if we unite and fight to save our country.”

She said that her parents left India in search of a better life, and they found it in Bamberg, South Carolina.

“I am the proud daughter of the Indian immigrants. My parents left India in search of a better life, they found it in Bamburg, South Carolina. Every day my parents reminded my brothers and sisters, that even on our worst day, we are ‘blessed’ to live in America,” she said.

Attacking the Biden government, she said, “Now America is falling behind, the US is slipping, and nobody embodies that failure more than Joe Biden. Our leaders put too much trust in big government, and too little trust in our people. The national debt is at 30 trillion dollars. This is not America, that called to my parents, and this is not the America that I will leave to my children.”

“We are ready to move past the stale ideas and faded names of the past, and we are more than ready for a new generation to lead us into the future,” she added

Giving a ‘message’ to the Republican party, she said that the party has lost the popular vote in seven of the last eight presidential elections.

“Our cause is right–but we have failed to win the confidence of a majority of Americans. Well–that ends today. If you’re tired of losing, then put your trust in a new generation. And if you want to win – not just as a party, but as a country – then stand with me!” she said.

Earlier on Tuesday, Nikki Haley announced in a video on her Twitter, that she will be running for President in 2024, challenging her fellow candidate Donald Trump.

While announcing her decision, Nikki Haley called for new leadership in the party that she admitted had repeatedly failed to grab the popular vote in the presidential elections.

While sharing the video, she wrote, “Get excited! Time for a new generation. Let’s do this!”

“Republicans have lost the popular vote in seven out of the last eight presidential elections. That has to change,” The Hill quoted Nikki Haley as saying.

“Joe Biden’s record is abysmal, but that shouldn’t come as a surprise. The Washington establishment has failed us over and over and over again. It’s time for a new generation of leadership,” she added.

In the video posted on Twitter, Nikki Haley said, “I was the proud daughter of Indian immigrants. Not black, not white. I was different. But my mom would always say, ‘Your job is not to focus on the differences, but the similarities’ and my parents reminded me and my siblings every day how blessed we were to live in the US.”

She further said, “Some look at our past as evidence that America’s founding principles are bad. They say the promise of freedom is just made up. Some think our ideas are not just wrong, but racist and evil. Nothing could be further from the truth.”

A former president of the National Association of Women Business Owners, she was first elected to the South Carolina House in 2004. Six years later, she became the first woman elected as governor of the state in 2010 and was the youngest governor in the nation when she took office in 2011. She resigned in the middle of her second term to become Trump’s ambassador to the UN – a role she served in until the end of 2018, CNN reported.

Haley began her political career as a state representative. She was elected the Governor of a staunch republican state South Carolina, by a very small margin of 51 per cent to 47 per cent. However, she went on to triple her margin during her re-election in 2014.

In a prominent moment from her career, Haley in 2015, signed a bill to remove the Confederate battle flag– the military emblem of the South’s fight to preserve slavery — from the South Carolina House.

After President Donald J. Trump chose her as his ambassador to the United Nations, Ms. Haley was confirmed overwhelmingly by the Senate, 96 to 4. She would serve in that role for about two years before resigning at the end of 2018.

As per The NYT, Haley was a face of the Trump administration’s policies at the UN on Israel, North Korea, Russia and Syria.

As per CNN, Haley has often attempted to walk a fine line between allying with Trump and distancing herself enough to appeal to his more moderate critics. She left the Trump administration in 2018 on good terms with the then-president – a marked contrast from other former Trump officials who have publicly fallen out with their onetime boss.

Then in April 2021, Haley had said that she would not run for President in 2024 if Donald Trump does, but she has decided to change her decision ultimately.

  • Election Commission acting like DMK’s poll wing, says AIADMK

Election Commission acting like DMK’s poll wing, says AIADMK

    [ad_1]

Chennai: The AIADMK on Wednesday alleged that the Election Commission is acting like DMK’s poll wing and that the police and all other departments are under the control of the DMK.

AIADMK MP CVe Shanmugham alleged that the DMK had erected temporary sheds at all the booth areas in East Erode — where Assembly bypoll will be held on February 27 — and voters are confined in these sheds all through the day. He also claimed that food is being served to the voters along distribution of cash.

AIADMK leaders are being prevented from meeting the voters, he claimed.

Shanmugham also demanded that the Chief Electoral Officer and the District Election officer should intervene and get the people released.

Shanmugham, who was the Law Minister in the previous AIADMK government, said that party leaders and functionaries are being intercepted by the police under the guise of vehicle checks.

He claimed the police are doing this deliberately to prevent the crowd from gathering at the public rallies of AIADMK interim General Secretary, Edappadi K. Palaniswami.

  • Justice strongest candidate against Manchin, GOP poll says

Justice strongest candidate against Manchin, GOP poll says

    [ad_1]

west virginia state of the state 92768

The poll was commissioned by the Senate Leadership Fund, the top GOP super PAC with close ties to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Justice has not decided to enter the race yet, though he’s said he that is “leaning” toward a bid. Manchin similarly has not decided whether he will run for reelection and has indicated he’s in no rush to decide.

“Senator Manchin continues to consider the best way he can serve his state and country. But make no mistake, he will win whatever race he enters,” said Sam Runyon, a spokesperson for Manchin.

Justice has near-universal name ID in West Virginia, according to the poll, and would start with an early lead in a potential three-way primary among Morrisey and Mooney. The survey shows Justice with 53 percentage points in the primary, Morrisey with 21 percent and Mooney with 16 percent. The poll was taken in early February and has a 4.1 percentage point margin of error.

Morrisey won the GOP primary in 2018, defeating former Rep. Evan Jenkins (R-W.Va.) and erratic coal businessman Don Blankenship. Mooney has not run statewide in West Virginia before but did win a hotly contested House primary against Rep. David McKinley (R-W.Va.) last year. And Justice has prevailed in two governor races, first as Democrat and then as a Republican. He now has high approval ratings — something Manchin once enjoyed as governor as well.

And in a race against Manchin, Justice leads 52-42, according to the poll, while the Democrat leads Mooney in a potential head-to-head 55-40 and Morrisey 52-42. Manchin defeated Morrisey by about 3 points in 2018.

The West Virginia Senate race is expected to once again be a marquee race in 2024 after Manchin held on in 2018, with Republicans seeing it as a prime pick-up opportunity and Democrats looking to defend every seat they have amid a tough map in 2024. But Mooney is still the only one officially in the race, with Manchin, Justice and Morrisey all still weighing their options. Justice has indicated he will make a decision soon.

  • Poll Body To Take Call On J&K Elections, Statehood After Assembly Polls: Amit Shah

Poll Body To Take Call On J&K Elections, Statehood After Assembly Polls: Amit Shah

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), as promised by the Centre, would be done after the Assembly poll in the Union Territory (UT) and a call to conduct elections would be taken by the Election Commission of India (ECI), Union Home Minister Amit Shah said today.

Talking to news agency ANI in a interview, Shah noted that there has been a marked improvement in the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir as the lowest militancy-related incidents were reported in the recent past.

He also insisted that Article 370, which was done away with by the Centre in August 2019, had actually harmed the country and the BJP had always been against it.

Noting that development in J&K was leading to gradual ending of militancy, Shah said, “See all the figures. There is a lot of change in Jammu and Kashmir.” Indicating that he could not comment on the timing of the poll in J&K, Shah said, “I had clearly stated that statehood will be restored in Jammu and Kashmir after elections. The process for preparation of voters’ list is nearing completion in the UT. Now, the Election Commission has to take a call on elections.”

On the issue of the emergence of new leadership in J&K, Shah said that new leadership would emerge from local bodies where poll had been held earlier. “The panches and sarpanches, who have been elected…new leadership will emerge from them…Since the time militancy started in J&K, the militancy-related figures are at their lowest today. Crores of tourists and ‘yatris’ are visiting J&K now. This is a huge change,” he noted.

Shah said removing Article 370 has been on the agenda of BJP and Jana Sangh. He also referred to India’s first PM Jawaharlal Nehru in the context of Article 370. “Since 1950, it was on our agenda to remove Article 370 from J&K. Today, the way J&K is witnessing development and decrease in militancy shows that change is coming,” he said. Shah said those slamming the BJP should answer in whose tenure militancy grew in J&K.

“As far as elections are concerned, do they not remember that local body polls were held under our rule? These did not take place for 70 years. Three families were holding sway in J&K and they are making noise…Farooq Abdullah had gone to England. In whose tenure, militancy grew…there should be an answer,” Shah said.

  • Aaditya’s challenge to Maha CM for poll fight in Worli ‘childish’: Shinde camp

Aaditya’s challenge to Maha CM for poll fight in Worli ‘childish’: Shinde camp

    [ad_1]

Thane: The Balasahebanchi Shiv Sena (BSS) on Tuesday termed as “childish” former Maharashtra minister Aaditya Thackeray’s comments challenging Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to contest election against him from the Worli Assembly seat in Mumbai.

Aaditya Thackeray, who was a cabinet minister in the erstwhile Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government headed by his father Uddhav Thackeray, is the sitting MLA of the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) from Worli.

Addressing a press conference here, Naresh Mhaske, a spokesperson of the Shinde-led Balasahebanchi Shiv Sena, said Aaditya Thackeray is not even a shakha pramukh (local party unit chief) and should stop comparing himself with the CM, who is a mass leader.

Mhaske said several senior Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders like Sunil Shinde and Kishori Pednekar were ignored and ticket was given to the junior Thackeray to contest the 2019 Assembly polls from Worli in central Mumbai.

The former Thane mayor said Aaditya Thackeray’s challenge to Chief Minister Shinde to contest election against him from Worli was “childish”.

“I have challenged this unconstitutional chief minister that I would resign as MLA from Worli and you contest election against me. Let me see how you win from Worli,” the junior Thackeray said at a party programme in Mumbai last Friday.

The BSS spokesperson said when Uddhav Thackeray resigned as Chief Minister in June last year, he had declared he would also quit his Legislative Council seat, but the former CM continues to a member of the Upper House.

Mhaske said Aaditya Thackeray did not contest elections from his family’s home turf Bandra in suburban Mumbai and instead went to Worli to fight polls.

The BSS spokesperson said instead of throwing challenge at Shinde, Aaditya Thackeray should contest upcoming civic polls against him (Mhaske) from Thane city.

Shinde is the MLA from the Kopri-Pachpakhadi constituency in Thane.
