BJP unlikely to field candidate in MCD mayoral poll, admits edge to AAP

New Delhi: The Delhi BJP is unlikely to field a candidate for the MCD mayoral poll due to a clear mandate in favour of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), a top party leader said on Tuesday.
Notification for the upcoming mayoral poll is expected to be issued on April 12, and voting could be held on April 26, according to official sources.
The BJP had contested the election for mayor of the unified MCD (municipal corporation of Delhi) in February despite not having necessary votes to emerge victorious.

Current mayor Shelly Oberoi from the AAP is expected to be repeated by her party. She had defeated BJP councilor Rekha Gupta in the February poll by 34 votes.
The one-year term of Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) mayor begins in April.
“We have not thought about fielding any candidate in the mayor’s election. The AAP has a victory margin and we do not have enough votes to emerge victorious,” said the BJP functionary.
The post of mayor in the national capital has five single-year terms on a rotation basis, with the first year being reserved for women, the second for open category, third for reserved category, and the remaining two again for the open category.
The Aam Aadmi Party won the MCD polls held in December last year. It ended the BJP’s 15 year old rule at the MCD. The AAP bagged 134 of the 250 wards, whie the BJP got 104.

Senior AAP leader and minister in Kejriwal government Saurabh Bhardwaj had said on Sunday that the elections for the posts of mayor and deputy mayor will be held on April 26.
BJP insiders said a final decision about fielding candidates in the elections for mayor and deputy mayor posts “will be taken after poll date is announced. In all likelihood, the decision could be to give the elections a skip”.

Elon Musk: ‘I should not tweet after 3am’

Billionaire-entrepreneur Elon Musk acknowledged he has made mistakes on social media, in an at-times bizarre interview with the BBC overnight.
“Have I shot myself in the foot with tweets multiple times? Yes,” Musk said. “I think I should not tweet after 3 a.m.”
Revealing the scale of the job cuts at Twitter since Musk bought the company for $44 billion last October, Musk said around 1,500 people currently work for the social media platform, down from “just under 8,000,” after a series of what he described as “painful” layoffs.
Musk defended the job cuts, claiming they were necessary to stave off bankruptcy. “This is not a caring, uncaring situation. It’s like if the whole ship sinks then nobody’s got a job,” Musk said, claiming that he had been “under constant attack” since buying Twitter.
The “pain level has been extremely high” since buying Twitter, Musk said. “Were there many mistakes made a long the way? Of course. But all’s well that ends well, I feel like we’re headed to a good place.”
The billionaire defended Twitter’s move to phase out its previous system of verifying notable accounts and personalities with a blue tick, and introduce a system where any user can pay for the tick instead. Several news organizations, including the New York Times and the Washington Post, have said they would not pay to keep their blue ticks.
“It’s a small amount of money, so I don’t know what their problem is,” Musk said. “We’re going to treat everyone equally.”
He said legacy blue ticks would disappear next week.

Asked whether he would sell Twitter for the same amount he paid for it, Musk said he wouldn’t — unless the buyer was as committed to telling the truth as he claimed to be. Last month, Musk said he thought the company was now worth $20 billion.
The live interview took place in Twitter’s San Francisco headquarters, and the BBC was given “about 20 minutes’ notice” that it would be going ahead, according to the British public broadcaster. Asked why he had agreed to sit down with the BBC, Musk said: “Spontaneity.”
Addressing a row over the decision by Twitter to label the BBC’s Twitter accounted as “government-funded media,” Musk said the tag would be updated. “I actually do have a lot of respect for the BBC,” Musk said. “We want it as truthful and accurate as possible — we’re adjusting the label to ‘publicly funded.’”
The interview took some strange turns, with Musk at one point saying he was “no longer the CEO of Twitter” and repeating his claim that his dog had replaced him in the top job.
The interview went for longer than expected, with James Clayton, the BBC journalist interviewing Musk, attempting to end the discussion on several occasions, but the entrepreneur insisting on answering questions from users on Twitter Spaces.

Karnataka poll: KCR eyes 40 Assembly seats with significant Telugu voters

Hyderabad: In a bid to expand the activities of the BRS in Karnataka and Maharashtra, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has started the work of identifying assembly constituencies dominated by Telugu voters in the two states. After the announcement of the Karnataka Assembly elections, KCR sent teams of leaders to Karnataka and sought a separate report from some experts.
There are reportedly 40 assembly constituencies in 12 districts of Karnataka where Telugu voters have a decisive position. The success of any candidate will depend on their support. After the release of the notification for the Karnataka Assembly elections, KCR has given the responsibility of various areas of Karnataka to ministers, MLAs and MPs and will campaign in favour of JD(S) candidates in these 40 assembly constituencies.
The districts identified are Bellary, Kolar, Bangalore (Rural), Bangalore (Urban), Rachaur, Kapala Tumkur, Chitradurga, Chikalapura, Yadgiri, Bidar and Kalaburagi. These districts have a significant number of Telugu people migrating from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

Most of the sections that influence the elections in Karnataka include Lingayats, Vokkaligas and SC/ST communities, but a significant number of Telugu voters are present in 12 districts. In view of the triangular contest between BJP, Congress and Janata Dal Secular in Karnataka, KCR has decided to support his ally Janta Dal Secular to prevent division of votes. BRS leaders will campaign in favour of Janata Dal-Secular candidates.
The number of assembly seats in Karnataka is 224 and in the 2018 elections, the candidates got the victory on 52 assembly constituencies with a majority of less than 5,000 votes. The state threw up a fractured mandate in 2018 elections with BJP emerging as the single largest party with 104 and the Congress won 87 seats while the JD(S) won 30. It is said that the Janata Dal-Secular’s tally will increase if Telugu voters support it.
The Election Commission announced that single-phase polls wil be held in Karnataka on May 10. The results will be declare 13 May.

Karnataka: Election related seizure touches close to Rs 100 cr in 10 days of poll announcement

Bengaluru: The election related seizure in Karnataka on Sunday touched close to Rs 100 crore, the office of the Chief Electoral Officer said.
According to the daily bulletin, the CEO said Rs 99.18 crore worth seizure were made ever since the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) came into effect in the State from March 29.
In just 10 days of MCC coming into effect, Rs 36.8 crore cash, Rs 15.46 crore worth freebies, 5.2 lakh litres of liquor valued at Rs 30 crore, Rs 15 crore worth gold and Rs 2.5 crore worth silver ornaments have been seized, the bulletin said.

On Sunday, the Static Surveillance Team seized Rs 34 lakh cash in Yadgir district and 56 televisions worth Rs 21 lakh in Nelamangala constituency in Bengaluru Rural district. The Excise department has seized 54,282 litres of liquor worth Rs 1.62 crore.
The elections to the 224-member Karnataka Assembly will be held on May 10 and results will be declared on May 13.

Shah Rukh Khan tops TIME100 reader poll, beating out global influencers

New Delhi: Superstar Shah Rukh Khan has topped Time magazine’s poll for its annual TIME100 list, bagging more reader votes than football ace Lionel Messi, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
According to the American publication, the “Pathaan” star got over four per cent of the 1.2 million votes cast.
In the poll, the magazine readers vote for the individuals they believe deserve a spot on TIME’s annual list of the most influential people.

Khan, 57, is currently riding high on the success of “Pathaan”, which became a runaway blockbuster at the global box office after it released in January.
The movie, a mega comeback vehicle for the superstar after his absence from leading man roles for more than four years, has earned over Rs 1000 crore worldwide.
The second spot went to the Iranian women protesting for greater freedoms from the country’s Islamic regime, garnering three per cent of the vote.
Iran has been hit by protests since the September 16 death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini. Amini was detained in September by Iran’s morality police, who said she didn’t properly cover her hair with the mandatory Islamic headscarf hijab. She collapsed at a police station and died three days later.
The Iranian women were also recognised in TIME’s 2022 Heroes of the Year and also won last year’s Person of the Year reader poll.

With 1.9 per cent vote share, Britain’s Prince Harry and his wife Markle came third and fourth on the poll.
The Duke of Sussex made headlines in January after the release of his memoir “Spare”, in which he wrote about intimate aspects of Britain’s royal family.
Messi, who steered Argentina to World Cup glory in an epic final against France last year in Qatar, is at the fifth spot with 1.8 per cent of the vote. He won the World Cup at his record-equalling fifth attempt.
Other stars and noteworthy figures who featured on the poll included this year’s best actress Oscar winner Yeoh, former tennis player Serena Williams, Zuckerberg and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
According to the outlet, its editors will reveal their choices for the 2023 TIME100 list on April 13.

Anti-toll gate panel asks voters to defeat BJP in Karnataka assembly poll

Mangaluru: The anti-toll gate action committee, which spearheaded the successful agitation against the toll gate at Surathkal here has asked voters in the twin districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi to defeat the BJP in the ensuing assembly elections for imposing hefty hike in toll charges on highways.
In a statement here, the committee convenor Muneer Katipalla strongly criticised the union government’s decision to increase highway toll charges by 25 per cent with effect from April 1.
Katipalla said the hike in toll charges has burdened the people who are already affected by price rise and increased cost of living.

Toll charges have now been increased at the four toll plazas in DK and Udupi districts, he said.
The common people should show their political will to teach the BJP a lesson in the coming elections and force all political parties not to act to benefit of corporates, he said.
While DK has two toll gates at Talapady on the National Highway border with Kerala and Brahmarakootlu on the Mangaluru-Bengaluru NH 75. Udupi has two toll plazas at Hejmady and Sasthana, both on NH 66.

Opinion poll projects Congress majority in Karnataka

New Delhi: An exclusive opinion poll conducted by ABP-CVoter in Karnataka in late March reveals that the Congress will probably win a majority of seats in the 224-seat Karnataka Assembly, which will go to the polls on May 10.
According to an analysis of the survey data, the vote share of the Congress could rise from 38 per cent in 2018 to 40.1 per cent this time. Compared to 80 seats in 2018, the ABP-CVoter survey projects the Congress to win between 115 and 127 seats.
The survey also reveals that the party is leading over rivals BJP and JD(S) in all the regions of Karnataka. Even in the old Mysore region, which has been a stronghold of the JD(S), the Congress is projected to edge ahead of its rival while the BJP is projected to perform very poorly in this region.
Using scientific random sampling techniques, the survey interacted with around 25,000 respondents across all demographics, age groups and identities.
According to the survey, the BJP will probably lose the state by some distance. The vote share of the party could come down from 36 per cent in 2018 to 34.7 per cent this time. The drop in vote share is small, but the projected loss of seats is far higher.
From 104 seats in 2018, the party is projected to win between 68 and 80 seats, far behind the Congress. Contrary to what some political analysts say, the JD(S) will not be decimated or wiped out, as per the survey. The vote share of the party remains virtually the same at 18 per cent while the number of seats won drops from 37 in 2018 to between 23 and 35 seats this time.
If the initial ABP-CVoter poll projections hold true, the Congress could be in a position to form the government on its own in Karnataka like it had done in 2013.

Fox poll shows Trump’s lead over DeSantis growing

Trump has been ramping up attacks on the likely 2024 contender. On Wednesday, he posted three new videos on Truth Social, the social media company he helped found, criticizing the governor for both his past policy decisions and his falling poll numbers.
The Fox poll was one of a handful released in recent days that show the former president widening his lead over DeSantis. In a Quinnipiac poll released Wednesday, Trump had the support of 47 percent of Republican and Republican-leaning voters, well above DeSantis’ 33 percent. A Morning Consult survey from earlier this month showed Trump with a 54-to-26 percent lead over DeSantis among potential GOP primary voters.
Trump’s growing lead in the polls comes amid a flurry of news over a potential indictment of the former president in a case related to a $130,000 hush money payment made to porn actress Stormy Daniels in 2016. Though an indictment appeared imminent earlier this month, it was reported Wednesday that the Manhattan grand jury investigating the allegations isn’t expected to hear additional evidence in the case for the next month.
In the Fox GOP poll, former Vice President Mike Pence drew 6 percent, followed by former Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley at 3 percent each, with other Republicans trailing behind.
The poll also showed President Joe Biden with an approval rating of 44 percent, same as last month.
Fox polled 1,007 randomly selected registered voters from March 24 to March 27. The margin of error of the poll was plus or minus 3 percentage points, though that margin was slightly larger — plus or minus 4.5 percentage points — for the results of the Republican primary ballot.

Most Americans think criminal charges should disqualify Trump from running again: poll

And while 55 percent of respondents think Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg is probing Trump for “serious” claims related to a 2016 hush money payment to a porn star, 60 percent believe the case is politically motivated. Only about a third of those surveyed believe the probe is being motivated by the law.
Trump has repeatedly blasted Bragg, a Democrat, for waging a so-called political witch-hunt aimed at stymying his chances for re-election.
POLITICO first reported Wednesday that the grand jury hearing evidence in Bragg’s investigation is expected to take a month-long break from the case.
Manhattan prosecutors are investigating Trump’s alleged role in a hush-money payment made to adult entertainer Stormy Daniels. The payment came during the height of his 2016 presidential campaign in order to prevent Daniels from publicizing an alleged affair with Trump. He has denied the affair and any wrongdoing in connection with the payment.
The probe is just one of several ongoing state and federal investigations into Trump.

AAP releases its Karnataka assembly poll manifesto in Bengaluru

New Delhi: The AAP on Wednesday released its manifesto for Karnataka polls giving 10 guarantees, which included 300 units of free electricity per month, 80 percent reservation to locals in jobs, and 33 percent reservation to women in government jobs if voted to power.
The Arvind Kejriwal-led party, which is gearing up to contest all seats in Karnataka assembly polls, also promised that it will generate 2 lakh jobs every year and fill up all the vacant posts, with preference to regularisation of contractual staff.
Kannada proficiency will be made mandatory for the state government jobs if the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is voted to power, Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh said, releasing the party manifesto at a press conference in Bengaluru, a few hours after the Election Commission announced Karnataka assembly polls schedule.
“It’s not just a poll manifesto, it’s a list of 10 guarantees which we will fulfil as we did in Delhi and Punjab,” Singh said.
The AAP’s Karnataka unit convener Prithvi Reddy and other office bearers from the state were present at the press conference.
If voted to power, AAP will make government schools better than the private schools, set up a committee to fix and regulate private schools fees, and regularise jobs of contractual teachers in the state, Singh said.
“Students of the state will be provided with free city bus transport facility,” he added.
For students who pass Class 12, a programme will be rolled out to give them a six month-long employability training with a Rs 5,000-per month stipend, Singh said.

“Voting age for the local body elections will be lowered to 16 years,” he added.
The AAP will provide 33 per cent reservation in the state government jobs to women and also free city bus rides to them, Singh said.
Every below poverty line woman above 18 years will get Rs 1,000 per month as “empowerment allowance.”
“The farm laws will be repealed. MSP will be provided based on the Swaminathan committee report. Guaranteed 12-hour free power will be provided for farming,” the AAP leader said.
“While old age pension will be increased from Rs 400 to 1,500 per month, widow pension will be increased from 800 to 2,000 plus Rs 500 per dependent child per month. Minor disability pension will be increased from Rs 600 to Rs 1,500 per month. Major disability pension will be increased from Rs 1,400 to Rs 2,500 per month,” he added.
Free health care services from medicines to surgeries, establishment of Delhi-model mohalla clinics in every locality and panchayat, and doorstep delivery of ration and government services were some of the other promises made by the party, according to its manifesto.
