BJP using Cong’s Bajrang Dal ban promise as a poll tool in Karnataka

Bengaluru: The BJP is pursuing an aggressive campaign in Karnataka as the state inches closer to the May 10 Assembly polls, especially after the Congress in its election manifesto promised to impose a ban on the Bajrang Dal if voted to power.
The BJP national leadership, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, are making it a point to include the “Jai Bajrang Bali” slogan in their public rallies. They are claiming that the Congress is insulting Lord Hanuman, revered by all Hindus.
The trend is fast catching on as the “I am Bajrangi” campaign is going viral on social media in Karnataka. Adding to it, Hindu outfits and the Bajrang Dal have given a call for reciting the Hanuman Chalisa in all temples of the state on Thursday (May 4).

The Hindu organisations and the Bajrang Dal have expressed outrage over comparing the Bajrang Dal to the banned Popular Front of India (PFI). Bharatiya Janata Party Karnataka president Nalin Kumar Kateel proclaimed in the presence of PM Modi at a public rally in Moodbidri that if the Congress has the capacity, let it ban the Bajrang Dal.
However, Karnataka Congress president D.K. Shivakumar, reacting to the row following the proposal to ban the Bajrang Dal in the manifesto, asked what is the connection between the Bajrang Dal and Bajrang Bali (Lord Hanuman).
Shivakumar stated that, “We are also devotees of Lord Hanuman. Are the BJP leaders the only devotees of Hanuman? The paradise of peace (Karnataka) should not be disturbed. There should be harmony.”
Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Shobha Karandlaje stated that the Bajrang Dal is a part of the RSS and working with the youth for the nation. It has never indulged in anti-national activities. The Congress manifesto has been released to appease the Muslims.

Talk of separating Mumbai from Maha is Oppn’s poll propaganda, says CM Shinde

Thane: Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Monday accused the Maha Vikas Aghadi of spreading propaganda that Mumbai would be separated from the state, which he said would never happen.
His statement, at a Maharashtra Foundation Day and International Labour Day event in Kalwa here, came amid Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray’s warning at an MVA rally in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex that “we will make pieces of anyone who tries to separate Mumbai from Maharashtra”.
“No one can dare break Mumbai from Maharashtra. Those spreading such propaganda will not succeed. Whenever polls are round the corner, they (opposition) come out with statements that Mumbai will be separated from Maharashtra,” Shinde said.

“They will not succeed in getting votes with this propaganda as we are working for the development of Mumbai and its people,” he said in an apparent reference to civic polls that are due in several cites, including the metropolis, Thane, Nagpur, Nashik among others, since early 2022.
Shinde said his government had given Rs 104 crore for development works in Kalwa and Kharigaon, adding he would let his work speak rather than spend time in replying to allegations levelled against him.
Giving details of state government initiatives, Shinde said there are 317 dispensaries across the state under the ‘Aapla Dawakhana’ scheme, including 117 in Mumbai, and the target was to take this number in Maharashtra to 700 soon.
More than eight crore senior citizens and six crore women have availed fare concessions given by his government on Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation bus services, he said, adding the state-run undertaking would soon get 5,000 electric buses.
Poking fun at the MVA ‘vajramuth’ (iron fist) rally addressed by Thackeray and leaders of the Congress and NCP, Shinde said its organisers were struggling to gather people, whereas the well-attended event at Kalwa showed people were “ek juth (united) for the vajramuth of vikas (development)”.

Hyderabad: The Congress party is trying to use Karnataka as an ATM to campaign for the next year’s general elections across the country, the Telangana Bharatiya Janata Party president alleged on Friday.
Participating in the election campaign for the BJP in the Mulabagilu assembly constituency in Karnataka, Sanjay said the Congress, if voted to power in the state, would loot the people and mint money, so that it could use it for its election campaign across the country in the next year’s general elections.
“In a way, the Congress is planning to use Karnataka as an ATM to make big money for funding its election campaign in the Lok Sabha elections,” he said.

Stating that development in Karnataka would come to a halt if the Congress is voted to power, the BJP president reminded that the Congress would not be able to mobilise funds from the Centre, as it was in power there. “Where does it get funds for development? From Pakistan?” he asked.
He alleged that the Congress and the Janata Dal (S) had a secret understanding in the elections. “Wherever the Congress is strong, the JD (S) would field a weak candidate and vice versa. Both the parties are getting funds from Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao,” he said.
Sanjay said the Congress and the JD (S) haven’t done anything for the development of Karnataka in the last 70 years and whatever development the state had witnessed, it was only during the BJP regime with Central funds.
Sanjay claimed that the BJP was the only party which was putting up a strong resistance to the AIMIM in the old city of Hyderabad. “At Bhagya Lakshmi temple near Charminar, the BJP has hoisted the saffron flag, uprooting the MIM flags,” he pointed out.
He lashed out at the Congress leaders for saying that their party would lift the ban on the Popular Front of India if it was voted to power. “We need to drive such leaders away in the elections,” he said.

Stating that the BJP was the only party which would protect the Hindu dharma and work for the majority of Hindus, Sanjay called upon the voters to hound out the parties which celebrate the birth anniversary of Tipu Sultan, who had committed rapes and murders on SCs, STs and Lingayats.
“There is no question of tolerating such forces who belittle Hindu dharma and try to split Hindu votes in the name of castes, creed and colour,” he said and appealed to the voters to elect the BJP in order to prevent the outbreak of terrorism in the state.
Earlier in the day, Sanjay conducted door-to-door campaign for the BJP at Yelahanka on the outskirts of Bengaluru. He asked the party leaders and cadre to step up their public outreach campaign. “We need to meet the people directly door to door and explain the good work done by the BJP government in the state and the Modi government at the Centre,” he said.
Several BJP workers welcomed Sanjay by bursting crackers. They showed enthusiasm in taking selfies with him.
The Telangana BJP chief also held a teleconference with party leaders of Telangana and asked them to make the 100th episode of Modi’s Mann Ki Baat programme a big success.
“There should be public viewing of the Prime Minister’s programme to be held in at least 100 centres at every assembly constituency, which must be viewed by at least 100 people at each centre. Telangana should be at the top in the country in highlighting the programme,” he added.

British public support for monarchy at historic low, poll reveals

Only three in 10 Britons think the monarchy is “very important”, the lowest proportion on record, a poll shows as the king’s coronation approaches.
A survey by the National Centre for Social Research (NatCen) shows public support for the monarchy has fallen to a historic low. A total of 45% of respondents said either it should be abolished, was not at all important or not very important.
In 2022, the year of the late queen’s platinum jubilee, 35% of respondents gave one of the same three answers. Overall, answers in 2023 displayed a drop in support for the monarchy to roughly the levels last seen in 2021.
The data, based on 6,638 interviews, builds on 40 years of data collected for the annual British Social Attitudes survey. It shows the number of people who say the monarchy is “very important” has fallen to 29%, from 38% in 2022.
This reflects a long-term trend of declining support for the monarchy, with the new research showing the number of those answering “very important” at the lowest level since data collection began in 1983.
But the return to 2021 levels is in keeping with the bump in popularity the Windsors tend to receive during showpiece events such as jubilees, weddings or births, NatCen noted.

Guy Goodwin, the chief executive of NatCen, said: “Whilst we are observing a downward trend in support for the monarchy, it is clear from the data that important national events and celebrations, such as jubilees, marriages and births, have a clear and positive effect on society’s views towards the monarchy.
“Throughout the 2010s, we saw an increase in support for Britain to continue to have a monarchy, which coincided with the marriage of HRH the Prince of Wales, and the queen’s diamond jubilee celebrations.”

A total of 26% of people surveyed said the monarchy was “quite important”, up two percentage points on 2021. But 20% said it was “not very important”, also up two points since 2021. A quarter of those questioned said the monarchy was “not at all important/should be abolished”, a proportion that has remained unchanged since 2021.
Goodwin said it was an additional concern that just 12% of 18- to 34-year-olds view the monarchy as “very important”, compared with 42% of those aged 55 and older. He said: “The challenge going forward will be for the monarchy to deliver its relevance and appeal to a younger generation to maintain this support.”

Congress announces fifth poll ‘guarantee’: free travel for women in public transport buses

Mangaluru: Announcing the fifth poll “guarantee” of the Congress ahead of the May 10 Assembly polls in Karnataka, party leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday promised free travel for women in public transport buses, if the party is voted to power in the state.
Rahul Gandhi is in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts, campaigning for the party’s candidates in the upcoming elections.
He hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for saying that the Congress would not fulfil its guarantees.
“Narendra Modi says Congress party will not fulfil its guarantees. We have given you (people) four guarantees and they will be implemented on the first day, in the first cabinet meeting. Modi ji, you said four guarantees will not be fulfilled, I’m adding more to it. We will not fulfil four guarantees on the first day, but will fulfil five,” Gandhi said.

Addressing a public meeting here, he said, “We will add another guarantee to four existing guarantees. It will be for women. Modi ji, listen carefully. As soon as Congress comes to power, on the very first day the fifth guarantee will also be implemented — women across Karnataka will travel free in public transport buses.”
“Your (BJP) people looted money from Karnataka’s women with 40 per cent commission, it is your work. While our work is to give Karnataka’s women the state’s money. So immediately after winning the election, whenever you meet a woman in buses, they would not be paying a single rupee to travel in buses,” he added.
Congress has already announced four guarantees’ 200 units of free power to all households (Gruha Jyoti), Rs 2,000 monthly assistance to the woman head of every family (Gruha Lakshmi), 10 kg of rice free to every member of a BPL household (Anna Bhagya), and Rs 3,000 every month for graduate youth and Rs 1,500 for diploma holders (both in the age group of 18-25) for two years (YuvaNidhi), on coming to power in the state.
Asking the voters to limit the BJP to 40 seats in the state, as they were a party that ran a “40 percent commission government”, Gandhi said, “The number is comfortable for them.”
He alleged that the BJP had made “stealing” a habit and were betraying all sections of people including the youth, farmers and fishermen. The BJP could not provide employment to the youth as promised. Inflation increased under the BJP rule and several small-scale industries were closed during the regime, he said.

A decision on all the promises in the Congress guarantee card would be made at the first cabinet meeting of the next government, Gandhi said, adding that the Narendra Modi government had not kept any of its promises including providing two crore jobs for the youth in a year and Rs 15 lakh to every household by rooting out corruption.
“The BJP is not keeping the promises to the poor, youth and farmers and has not done anything for them, whereas they have kept the promises made to Adani,” Gandhi charged.
He said he was disqualified from Parliament for asking questions about the link between the BJP government and Adani. “The ruling party has not given answer to my question yet,” he said.
Congress’ fifth poll promise, interestingly, came on a day, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressing Karnataka BJP workers virtually made a strong pitch for ending “revdi culture” (culture of distributing freebies).
Accusing the Congress of engaging in “revdi culture” in Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan, Modi said their poll guarantees have still remained unfulfilled. “Congress means guarantee of corruption, guarantee of nepotism,” he had said.
“Congress has reached a stage where it cannot give true guarantees, you are aware that Congress’s warranty has expired, then what is the meaning of its guarantees,” he added.

Biden is ignoring immigration issues, voters say in poll

The new poll — conducted on behalf of immigrant advocacy group Immigration Hub and Voto Latino, a political organization focused on Latino voter turnout — comes three weeks before the administration plans to end Title 42, the Trump-era policy that has allowed border agents to immediately expel millions of migrants on public health grounds for the past three years. Biden administration officials fear a surge at the border upon the policy’s expiration next month and have turned to more restrictive measures to tamp down a record number of migrants fleeing political and economic turmoil.
The White House should seize on the opportunity to get ahead of Republicans’ growing chatter leading up to the May 11 end date, said Beatriz Lopez, Immigration Hub’s chief political and communications officer.
“It’s comms 101. Get ahead of the narrative. Talk about what you’re doing. Talk about what you plan to do,” Lopez said. “But it’s talking about both — not just the border but also what they’re planning to do to protect Dreamers and others who are every bit a part of the American community. That balanced approach is what works with voters.”
The shift in border policy is expected to be a major political test for the Biden White House, which has rolled out a patchwork of solutions to combat a growing humanitarian crisis at the southern border. The Biden administration is also dealing with a gridlocked Congress, although lawmakers have long been unable to compromise on how to fix an outdated immigration system.
“The fact is that in the 820 days since he sent Congress a comprehensive immigration reform bill, President Biden has taken unprecedented action to expand lawful immigration pathways, limit unlawful immigration, protect Dreamers and farmworkers, and increase border security. Because of this administration’s work, unlawful immigration is down, legal immigration is up, we’ve got record funds for border security, and thousands of smugglers are now off the streets,” White House spokesperson Abdullah Hasan said in a statement.
“Meanwhile, all that House Republicans have managed to ‘accomplish’ since taking their (slim) majority is voting to abruptly lift Title 42 overnight with no plan in place for what comes next, proposing draconian funding cuts to border security, and playing partisan political games that do nothing to actually fix our long-broken immigration system.”
House Republicans unveiled immigration legislation this week, with plans to further restrict asylum, expand family detention and crack down on the employment of undocumented workers. The House Judiciary Committee is scheduled to mark up the bill Wednesday, though the measure has little chance of making it through the Democratic-controlled Senate.
Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) also unveiled a plan on Tuesday that relies on the White House taking executive action to address immigration. He shared his plan with the White House and other federal agencies, with ideas for creating new pathways to citizenship, increasing humanitarian aid for certain countries, increasing border security funding and expanding efforts to target human traffickers.

Menendez’s suggestions come as the Biden administration prepares for a spike in border crossings come May, already the busiest time of year for migration. In addition to relying on more stringent immigration proposals to restrict entry to asylum-seeking migrants, the administration has discussed reinstating the detention of migrant families — drawing great backlash from immigration advocates, lawyers and Democrats.
More than eight-in-10 voters in the poll — 82 percent — believe the immigration system is broken, and they want to see both enhanced border security and policies that provide a pathway to citizenship, such as work permits for Dreamers, undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children, and Temporary Protected Status for other migrants.
Sixty-five percent of respondents have a positive view of “modernizing and improving the physical infrastructure at high-volume ports of entry to enhance screening and processing,” while 76 percent want Dreamers and other undocumented immigrants residing in the U.S. to gain legal status if certain requirements are met, including background checks. Sixty-four percent of voters back the Biden administration using its TPS authority.
“Voters disapprove of the job both parties are doing on immigration because they see the system as deeply broken and in desperate need of a fix,” said Nick Gourevitch, partner and managing director at Global Strategy Group. “Recent polling shows voters clearly want Washington to act with solutions that are balanced — that include both border security and pathways to citizenship and legal status for Dreamers and other immigrants.”
The Biden administration announced plans last week to expand health care coverage to recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, but great concern remains about the fate of the popular Obama-era program, which has allowed hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants who arrived in the U.S. as children to receive work permits and deportation relief. After a flurry of court challenges, advocates and legal experts warn the program is headed to the Supreme Court, where the conservative bench seems likely to rule it illegal.
The online poll surveyed 1,201 likely 2024 general election voters in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin between April 4-11. The margin of error was plus or minus 2.8 points.

BJP enters MCD mayoral poll race; fields GK councillor Shikha Rai

New Delhi: The BJP on Tuesday fielded Shikha Rai and Soni Pandey for the election of the mayor and the deputy mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), despite not having adequate numbers in the House.
Accompanied by Delhi BJP leaders, Rai and Pandey filed their papers for the polls to the posts of mayor and deputy mayor respectively on Tuesday, the last day of filing nominations.
Rai is the councillor from the Greater Kailash-1 ward, while Pandey represents northeast Delhi’s Sonia Vihar ward in the civic body.

Earlier, a top Delhi BJP leader had claimed that the saffron party was not likely to contest the polls as there was a “clear mandate” in the favour of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
The AAP has re-nominated incumbent mayor Shelly Oberoi and deputy mayor Aaley Mohammad Iqbal for the posts.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders hoped that the councillors in the MCD will elect Rai.
“The BJP is determined to run a good, clean and strong municipal corporation and we hope that all corporators will elect the experienced senior councillor of the party,” Delhi BJP general secretary Harsh Malhotra said.
Rai said she will seek votes from the councillors on the basis of her vision for the MCD. A former vice-president of the Delhi BJP, she gained prominence after joining other leaders of the saffron party in hoisting the tricolour at Srinagar’s Lal Chowk in 2011.

A lawyer by profession, Rai is an experienced councillor of the civic body where she held the posts of leader of the House in 2017-18 and chairman of the standing committee in 2018-19.
The one-year term of the MCD mayor begins in April. The post has five single-year terms on a rotational basis, with the first year being reserved for women, the second for the open category, the third for the reserved category and the remaining two again for the open category.
The BJP had contested the election for the post of mayor of the unified MCD in February despite not having the necessary votes to emerge victorious. Oberoi had defeated BJP councillor Rekha Gupta in the February poll by 34 votes.
Iqbal too had defeated his opponent from the BJP.
The AAP won the MCD polls held in December last year. It ended the BJP’s 15-year rule at the civic body. The Arvind Kejriwal-led party bagged 134 of the 250 wards, while the BJP got 104.

Biden’s poll numbers look grim as he preps for reelection bid

According to FiveThirtyEight, Biden’s average approval rating stands at 43 percent, about 9 points lower than his 52 percent disapproval rating. That’s only 1 point higher than Trump’s FiveThirtyEight approval rating on April 15, 2019, at the same point in his one-term presidency.
Determining the extent to which Biden’s poor job rating endangers his likely reelection bid is not just an academic exercise. A deep dive into the numbers reveals Biden isn’t just struggling with independents and near-unanimous disapproval among Republicans. He’s also soft among Democrats and left-leaning demographic groups, a weakness that suggests a diminished enthusiasm for his candidacy — though something that could be papered over by partisan voting patterns in the general election.
That’s because the possible “alternative” to Biden next November could be Trump, whose personal favorability ratings are generally worse than Biden’s. Even as Trump has expanded his lead in the GOP presidential primary, he remains less popular than his Oval Office successor.
For Biden, the polling presents both serious warning signs and reasons to think his peril may be overstated. Here’s why:
Biden’s tenuous place in history
Biden’s 43-percent approval rating at this juncture of his term puts him roughly even with past presidents who have both won — Barack Obama (43 percent), Ronald Reagan (41 percent) — and lost, like Trump (42 percent) and Jimmy Carter (40 percent).

But to underscore how things can change between mid-April of the year before the election and the next November, both George H.W. Bush and his son, George W. Bush, sported high approval ratings at this point. George H.W. Bush was just a couple of months removed from the successful Operation Desert Storm and had an approval rating of 77 percent in mid-April, according to Gallup, which maintains the deepest archives of presidential job ratings.
The elder Bush would go on to win only 37 percent of the vote in a three-way race with Bill Clinton (43 percent) and independent Ross Perot (19 percent), owing to economic woes that overshadowed the credit he’d gotten from the first Iraq war.
George W. Bush had a 75 percent approval rating in a Gallup poll in mid-April 2003 — about a month into the second Iraq War. He won reelection, though by just 2 percentage points over Democrat John Kerry.

For Biden, not only is 18 months a long time, but he faces challenges both foreign and domestic, including slowing-but-persistent inflation and a possible economic recession.
Trouble with swing voters
Biden ousted Trump from the White House thanks to a coalition that combined the entire Democratic base with key swing groups who don’t identify with either party. But now both blocs show significant cracks in their approval of Biden.
Among independents, a group Biden won by double digits in 2020, the president is now underwater by a roughly 2-to-1margin, according to two polls released in late March from Fox News and Quinnipiac University.
In the Fox News poll, only 35 percent of voters approved of the job Biden is doing, while 65 percent disapproved. In the Quinnipiac poll, Biden’s numbers with independents are even worse: just 26 percent approve, and 67 percent disapprove.
Biden is 17 points underwater among suburban voters in the Fox News poll and 23 points in arrears in a Pew Research Center survey from late March and early April. Swingy suburban voters are a group Biden won narrowly over Trump in both the network exit poll (Biden +2 among suburban voters) and AP Votecast (Biden +10), a voter survey commissioned by The Associated Press and Fox News.
Biden won self-described moderates by 20 to 30 points in 2020, but the same group is evenly split on his job approval, according to the Fox News poll: 47 percent approve and 51 percent disapprove.
Softness among Democrats and core constituencies
Perceptions of Biden’s job performance are uniquely tepid among base voters — Democrats and other left-leaning demographic groups — in ways that his most recent predecessors, Trump and Barack Obama, never experienced. Even as they inspired enmity among members of the opposite party, both Trump and Obama won the same level of approval from their own party.
But that’s not happening with Biden. Virtually all Republicans say they disapprove of his job performance — 90 percent or greater in each of the three polls referenced above — but Democrats aren’t answering with their own approval.
In the Fox News and Quinnipiac polls, approval of Biden’s job performance among Democrats is around 80 percent. The Pew Research Center survey combines Democrats with independents who say they lean more toward the Democratic Party — still a must-win group for Biden — and finds his approval rating lower, at 67 percent.
Moreover, Biden is struggling with key subgroups of the Democratic base. He won around 9-in-10 Black voters in 2020, but only 59 percent of Black respondents to the Pew Research Center poll said they approve of how Biden is handling his job as president.
So far, Biden isn’t facing a credible threat for the presidential nomination within the Democratic Party. Should he enter the race, the only announced challengers with any degree of name ID he’d face are Marianne Williamson, who dropped out of the 2020 race before voting began, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the son of the senator whose most prominent public advocacy in recent years has been against vaccinations (according to the latest Kaiser Family Foundation polling, only 8 percent of Democrats say they won’t receive the Covid vaccine, underscoring how difficult it will be to sell primary voters on an anti-vaccination platform).
Still, Biden faces a distinct — and without recent precedent — lack of enthusiasm for his candidacy among Democrats. In a CNN poll from last month, only 68 percent of Democrats said Biden deserves to be reelected next year.
In this way, Biden’s approval rating might actually overstate his electoral position: Around 1-in-10 Americans who say they approve of Biden’s job performance, 11 percent, say they don’t think he deserves to be reelected. In other words, they think he’s doing a good job, but harbor doubts about another term.
CNN noted that the 11 percent is a greater share than the overlap between Trump and Obama approvers and those who thought they deserved second terms. Those numbers were 3 and 5 percent for Trump and Obama, respectively.

Congress ropes in poll strategist Sunil Kanugolu for MP Assembly polls

Bhopal: The Congress has roped in poll strategist Sunil Kanugolu, a former associate of Prashant Kishor, to help it shape its campaign for the upcoming Assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh, where the government led by the grand old party was ousted from power by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) three years back, a party functionary said.
Assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh are scheduled by the end of this year.
Kanugolu is currently spearheading the Congress’ campaign in Karnataka, where Assembly polls will be held on May 10.
After that election ends, he will focus on Madhya Pradesh and set up his office in the state, the party functionary said.
Kanugolu had earlier worked with Prime Minister Narendra Modi as part of the BJP’s campaign.

Later he started strategising campaigns for Congress. He even contributed to Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra, he added.
“A professional strategist’s help comes handy in preparing for Assembly polls.
Madhya Pradesh’s intrinsic political situation, including caste equations, make the task more complicated. Perhaps the Congress should build its own election management mechanism,” senior journalist and a visiting fellow with the Observer Research Foundation (ORF), Rasheed Kidwai, told PTI.
A Congress leader said Kanugolu will play a key role in shaping the party’s campaign and MP.
He had worked for the BJP in UP and is said to have played a key role in the resounding victory of Yogi Adityanath in 2017, party leaders said.
In the 2018 MP Assembly elections, the Congress emerged as the largest party by winning 114 seats in the 230-member House, while the BJP won 109 seats.
The grand old party formed a coalition government under Kamal Nath. However, a rebellion by Jyotiradiya Scindia, an influential leader from the state, led to several Congress MLAs resigning from the party. They later joined the BJP, paving the way for Shivraj Singh Chouhan to return as chief minister.

Poll: Trump holds most support for 2024 GOP presidential nomination in South Carolina

Former President Donald Trump has gained more support for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination from South Carolina Republican voters than former Gov. Nikki Haley and Sen. Tim Scott in their home state, a Winthrop University poll released Wednesday shows.
Trump was the top pick among 41 percent of respondents. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis — who has yet to declare his candidacy, though he is widely expected to — came in second with 20 percent and Haley came in third with 18 percent.
Seven percent of respondents support a presidential nomination for Scott. The South Carolina senator has not announced that he’s running for the GOP ticket in 2024, but he officially launched his presidential exploratory committee Wednesday.
