Richard Sharp was Boris Johnson’s toxic legacy – never again should politicians pick a boss for the BBC | Jonathan Freedland

    [ad_1]

A word of advice for anyone who has worked hard to acquire a reputation they cherish: if Boris Johnson approaches, if he comes anywhere near, run a mile. Richard Sharp is the latest proof that, even out of office, Johnson continues to act as reputational napalm, laying waste to careers and turning good names bad.

Sharp joins a long list that includes Christopher Geidt, who had the poison task of serving as Johnson’s adviser on ethics; Allegra Stratton, whom the former prime minister said had “sickened” him when she joked about a party in Downing Street, even though he had attended several himself; and the one-time rising star civil servant and current cabinet secretary, Simon Case, quoted this week as having said of Johnson, “I don’t know what more I can do to stand up to a prime minister who lies”. Each entered Johnson’s circle as a respected figure; each was diminished by their contact with the reverse Midas, the man who rots everything he touches.

One question left by Sharp’s resignation as chair of the BBC is: what took him so long? He hardly needed to wait for today’s report by Adam Heppinstall KC, with its verdict that Sharp’s failure to disclose his role in brokering an £800,000 loan arrangement for Johnson represented “a breach of the governance code”, to know that he could not possibly continue in a job whose defining duty is to maintain the independence of the BBC. As the former director general John Birt said a month ago, Sharp was “unsuitable” for the role, thanks to “navigating a loan for the prime minister at exactly the same time as applying for the job at the BBC. It’s the cosiness of that arrangement that made it unsuitable, and I wish the cabinet secretary had called it out.” (The cabinet secretary being Case, serially Midased by Johnson.)

According to those inside the BBC, Sharp had been a capable chair. But the manner of his appointment meant he could never do the job properly. Witness last month’s row over Gary Lineker’s tweet, aimed at Suella Braverman’s language on migrants. That was a moment when you might expect the chair to lead from the front, publicly explaining either why impartiality is central to the BBC’s mission or why it was vital that the BBC not succumb to government pressure – or both. Instead, Sharp was mute and invisible, too hopelessly compromised as the man who had helped bail out a fiscally incontinent Tory prime minister to say a word.

It’s baffling that all of this did not occur to Sharp himself long ago – including right at the start, when he submitted his job application and was required to identify any conflicts, or perceived conflicts, of interest. The fact that he didn’t mention his role in the Johnson loan, even though he had discussed the issue with Case, suggests he knew that it looked bad – that it would give rise to the “perception that Mr Sharp would not be independent from the former prime minister, if appointed,” as Heppinstall puts it. Given he knew the importance of perceived, as well as actual, neutrality for the BBC, that silence was itself disqualifying.

His grudging resignation statement suggests the penny has still not dropped. Dominic Raab may have started a fashion for passive-aggressive Friday departures, because Sharp was insistent that his breach of the rules was “inadvertent and not material”. Still, he invited our admiration for his decision “to prioritise the interests of the BBC” since “this matter may well be a distraction from the corporation’s good work were I to remain in post”. Er, yes, just a bit. Again, if preventing a distraction was Sharp’s concern, he should have gone the moment this story broke. As it is, he’s left multiple questions still to answer – including whether Johnson should not have recused himself from the appointment process on the grounds that he had an egregious conflict of interest, given that he knew Sharp had helped him out with the loan.

What’s needed now is not just a new BBC chair, but a new way of doing things. Even if he hadn’t got involved in Johnson’s personal finances, Sharp was hardly a non-partisan figure. He is a longtime, high-value donor to the Tory party, to the tune of £400,000. True, political parties, Labour included, have been appointing allies and chums to this role since the 1960s, but that practice needs to stop. Lineker distilled the case nicely: “The BBC chairman should not be selected by the government of the day. Not now, not ever.”

This goes wider than the BBC: there’s a slew of public jobs that might appear to be independently appointed, but that are quietly filled on the nod, or whim, of Downing Street. But it’s with the BBC that independence matters acutely. To understand why, look across the Atlantic.

This week’s announcement by Joe Biden that he will seek a second term had to fight for media attention with the firing of Fox News anchor Tucker Carlson. That’s because Carlson had become second only to Donald Trump in influence over the Republican party, able to make senior elected officials and aspirant presidential candidates bend to his agenda and ideological obsessions – even when mainstreaming previously fringe, and racist, ideas like the “great replacement theory”, with its claim of a deliberate, if shadowy, plot to replace white Americans with a more diverse and pliant electorate.

Fox News itself, with its repeated amplification of the big lie of a stolen election, is partly responsible for why nearly two-thirds of Republican voters do not believe a demonstrable fact: namely, that Biden won office in a free and fair contest in 2020. Today’s America is a land of epistemic tribalism: knowledge is not shared across the society, but rather dependent on political affiliation. There are red state facts and blue state facts, and which you believe comes down to which media you consume – which social media accounts you follow, which TV networks you watch.

In Britain, there have been efforts to lead us down that gloomy path. There are partisan, polemical TV channels now, desperate to do to Britain what Fox has done to America. And Johnson was Trumpian in his contempt for the truth, determined to create a world of Brexit facts that would exist in opposition to the real one. But if those efforts have largely failed – and if Johnson was eventually undone by his lies – that is partly down to the stubborn persistence in this country of a source of information that is regarded by most people as, yes, flawed and, yes, inconsistent, but broadly reliable and fair. Trust levels in the BBC are not what they were, and that demands urgent attention, but it is striking nonetheless that, according to a Reuters Institute study, aside from local news, BBC News is the most trusted news brand in the US. It seems that in an intensely polarised landscape, people thirst for a non-partisan source.

The BBC should be defended – and that process starts with governments treating it as the publicly funded broadcaster it is, rather than the state broadcaster some wrongly imagine it to be. That means giving up the power to pick its boss – and getting politicians out of the way. The BBC is a precious thing – so precious, we might not fully appreciate it until it’s gone.

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Micro-blogging site Twitter on Tursday removed the verified blue tick from many high-profile individuals’ account in India including West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami, and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal’s among others.

The only individual Twitter users who have verified blue checkmarks are those paying for Twitter Blue, which costs USD 8/month via the web and USD 11/month through the in-app payment on iOS and Android.

The other political figures who have lost the blue tick are Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi.

    MS Education Academy

Besides them, political parties like the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and the Congress also lost their verification badges.

Due to the recent development, several B-town celebrities including Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Alia Bhatt and cricketers Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma among others have lost their verified blue ticks from their Twitter accounts.

Earlier it was announced that the microblogging site would remove the verified check-mark status of accounts that Twitter had been verified as notable before Elon Musk’s takeover unless they have subscribed to Twitter Blue or the business-focused Twitter Verified Organizations plan, Variety reported.

Initially, the blue tick served as a way of protecting well-known individuals from impersonation and tackling false information.

Earlier in March, Twitter posted from their official handle, “On April 1st, we will begin winding down our legacy verified program and removing legacy verified checkmarks. To keep your blue checkmark on Twitter, individuals can sign up for Twitter Blue.

Twitter first introduced the blue check mark system in 2009 to help users identify that celebrities, politicians, companies and brands, news organizations and other accounts “of public interest” were genuine and not impostors or parody accounts. The company didn’t previously charge for verification.

Musk launched Twitter Blue with the check-mark badge as one of the premium perks within two weeks of the company’s takeover last year.

  • Pegasus-style spyware attack hits journalists, politicians via iPhone exploits

Pegasus-style spyware attack hits journalists, politicians via iPhone exploits

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The fear of Pegasus-style spyware attack resurfaced on Tuesday after researchers at Microsoft and the digital rights group Citizen Lab identified new victims in North America, Central Asia, Southeast Asia, Europe, and the Middle East — once again from an Israel-based spyware maker.

Hackers used QuaDream spyware to send malicious calendar invites and hack the iPhones of journalists, political opposition figures, and an NGO worker.

“Based on an analysis of samples shared with us by Microsoft Threat Intelligence, we developed indicators that enabled us to identify at least five civil society victims of QuaDream’s spyware,” Citizen Lab said in a statement.

    MS Education Academy

The researchers identified traces of a suspected iOS 14 zero-click exploit used to deploy QuaDream’s spyware.

The exploit was deployed as a zero-day against iOS versions 14.4 and 14.4.2, and possibly other versions.

“The suspected exploit, which we call ‘ENDOFDAYS’, appears to make use of invisible iCloud calendar invitations sent from the spyware’s operator to victims,” said Citizen Lab of the University of Toronto’s Munk School.

Microsoft Threat Intelligence analysts named the threat group “DEV-0196” linked to Israel-based private sector offensive actor (PSOA) known as QuaDream.

QuaDream reportedly sells a platform they call REIGN to governments for law enforcement purposes. REIGN is a suite of exploits, malware, and infrastructure designed to exfiltrate data from mobile devices.

Like NSO Group’s Pegasus spyware, REIGN reportedly utilises zero-click exploits to hack into target devices.

“Citizen Lab was able to identify operator locations for QuaDream systems in the following countries: Bulgaria, Czechia, Hungary, Ghana, Israel, Mexico, Romania, Singapore, United Arab Emirates, and Uzbekistan,” the tech giant revealed.

QuaDream has had a partnership with a Cypriot company called InReach, with whom it is currently embroiled in a legal dispute.

“Numerous key individuals associated with both companies have prior connections with another surveillance vendor, Verint, as well as Israeli intelligence agencies,” the reports mentioned.

An Apple spokesperson was quoted as saying in a TechCrunch report that “there’s no evidence showing the exploit discovered by Microsoft and Citizen Lab has been used after March 2021, when the company released an update”.

QuaDream was mentioned in a December 2022 report from Meta, which reportedly took down 250 accounts associated with the company.

According to the report, Meta observed QuaDream testing its ability to exploit iOS and Android mobile devices with the intent “to exfiltrate various types of data including messages, images, video and audio files, and geolocation”.

  • Kashmiri politicians attack Centre over Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification

Kashmiri politicians attack Centre over Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification

    [ad_1]

Srinagar: PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Friday said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification from the Lok Sabha has proved right apprehensions he had expressed in London recently.

“GOI is clearly rattled by RG for emerging as a powerful challenger pre 2024 elections. Since BJP can’t fight him politically, they are now subverting institutions because he refuses to do a Savarkar. The apprehensions he voiced in London are tragically being proven right,” Mehbooba tweeted.

Commenting on Gandhi’s disqualification, CPI(M) leader Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami said the central government was trying to control all institutions in the country for its advantage.

“I had never thought that the democracy of our country would be brought to such lows. For a long time, the government has been trying to take control of the Parliament and other institutions,” Tarigami told PTI.

He said the government was not in the mood of tolerating dissent in any form.

“Today the highest body of the country has been affected. Such a haste is astonishing! The court has barely announced the verdict, suspended the sentence and given time to him to appeal. The parliament has no time to discuss the daily issues of the common man. It has no patience to listen to the opposition voices and criticism,” he said.

“This is a warning not just to the opposition but people of the entire country that we are facing the same situation which we did not expect even during the emergency. This is not about Rahul Gandhi alone, this is a punishment for speaking the truth,” he added.

National Conference spokesman Imran Nabi Dar said today was not a good day for democracy.

“The speed with which the Lok Sabha secretariat has disqualified Rahul Gandhi raises a lot of questions. The other issue is that the defamation law under which this was done needs to be reviewed,” he said.

Dar said the move to disqualify Gandhi seems to be a fall out of the success of the Bharat Jodo Yatra. “Otherwise, the ministers in the same government have named Rahul Gandhi so many times.”

“We will support all such efforts which will strengthen the democracy in the country and will oppose all those forces which try to harm the democracy,” Dar said.

BJPs Rana Says All Party Participants Are Rejected, Dejected, Confused, Frustrated Politicians

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: In a scathing remark, Senior BJP leader Devender Singh Rana criticized the all-party meeting organized by opposition parties in Jammu, labeling it as an assembly of “rejected, dejected, confused, and frustrated” politicians. He claimed that these politicians are unnerved by the momentous changes brought about in Jammu and Kashmir by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Rana asserted that these changes have steered the Union Territory from a dark alley of death, destruction, and gloom to become a bright, resurgent, peaceful, and developing part of the country.

“The opposition cannot derail Jammu and Kashmir’s tryst with peace and normalcy”, he said and cautioned the opposition not to assume the role of agent provocateurs to mislead the people for furthering their nefarious political agenda.

In an informal interaction with the media persons, Rana stated that “the meet is yet another non-event of all those who have developed vested interest over the decades in boiling Kashmir to bake their political loaves and sustain their enterprise.” He further commented that “peace and normalcy across Jammu and Kashmir is a sort of threat for their political existence and thus they smell a rat in all that is being done for the overall good of the UT.”

“Politically mature people understand the gimmicks of the self-seeking political actors, who can go to any extent for remaining relevant in politics,” he stated.

He further remarked that “their negative and obstructive political campaigns will not deviate the efforts of heralding complete normalcy to which the BJP is committed.” Rana also highlighted the fast-changing scenario in the Valley, stating that “last year witnessed record tourist footfall that was incomprehensible years ago when Kashmir was pushed to a dark alley of bandhs and stone pelting.” He added that “such a scenario had become a new normal. That situation has now totally changed, with economic activity gaining momentum, development getting impetus, and the people’s participation in governance becoming predominantly discernible.”

As per Rana, “Some political entities obviously feel uncomfortable with normalcy dawning and the UT treading on the path of development and prosperity.” He also stated that “the peaceful and resurgent Jammu and Kashmir goes against their scheme of things.” The minister emphasized that “every segment of society is part of the growth story,” and those who pretend to be oblivious to the changes taking place in both regions, regardless of religion and caste, are betraying their sense of understanding.”

Jammu Kashmir Politicians To Meet EC, Central Leaders For Early Polls, Statehood

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: The non-BJP all-party meeting in Jammu convened by Dr Farooq Abdullah has decided that they will meet the Election Commission for early elections in federally ruled Jammu and Kashmir. They said the Lt Governor-led dispensation does not represent the people of the erstwhile state.

    Dr Farooq Abdullah e1662903876256
Dr Farooq Abdullah addressing a one day workers convention at Chitragam in Shopian on September 5,2022

“There is uncertainty everywhere in Jammu and Kashmir. It is the right of State Assembly to take a call on imposition of property tax like issues,” Dr Farooq has told the meeting. “This is a temporary government. It is not a people’s government. It is a government of Delhi. People’s government is Assembly where members have to decide what is right and what is wrong.”

Dr Abdullah told reporters that religion was used to create division between Hindus and Muslims in the region. “We must not forget that Jammu and Kashmir is a secular state and will remain secular. All faiths in the region live shoulder-by-shoulder together. Jammu and Kashmir is the crown of India and with the grace of God, it will remain the Crown of India in future as well,” he told the reporters after the meeting was over.

Regretting the politics of division, Dr Abdullah asked: “The politics of fear and hate is not new. What will they do to 22-24 crore Muslims? Will they throw them in the sea or will they send them to China?”

Dr Abdullah called for the restoration of statehood and early elections. “We want Statehood to be restored and elections to be held. For the first time in the history of the nation, a proud State was reduced to a Union Territory (UT). It was a tragedy,” Dr Abdullah said. “We are an integral part of the nation. We belong to this nation, so why are they doing this to us?”

Insisting that there was an uncalled delay in starting the democratic process, Dr Abdullah said the administration is claiming an improvement in the situation. “The government claims the situation has improved in Jammu and Kashmir. A G-20 meeting is being planned in May. Why the delay in conducting Assembly elections?” he said.

Announcing the outcome of the meeting, Dr Abdullah said a delegation of Jammu and Kashmir leaders will leave for Delhi and apprise all the national political parties about the prevailing situation. “Uncertainty prevails in Jammu and Kashmir after the Union government changed its status and took over all its affairs,” Dr Abdullah said. “We hope they will raise our issues appropriately in the upcoming Parliament session.”

Lashing at the media, the NC President said the media lacks the guts to broadcast the ground realities. “I know the situation is adverse right now and you too are forced to succumb before the circumstances,” he said.

The meeting hosted by Dr Farooq Abdullah at his Bathandi residence was attended by National Panthers Party leader Harshdev Singh, Congress chief Viqar Rasool Wani, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Taranjit Singh Tony, CPI(M) leader MY Tarigami, Shiv Sena president Manish Sahwany and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Amrik Singh Reen.

    Aptech Controversy: Political Class Reacts

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah on Wednesday came out in support of the protesting JKSSB aspirants and condemned the use of excessive force against them.

Taking to microblogging site Twitter, Omar Abdullah wrote, “I condemn, in the strongest possible terms, the use of force & lathi charge against students & JKSSRB aspirants. These youngsters were exercising their democratic right to protest against the recent decision to engage a blacklisted firm #Aptech by JKSSRB.”

“What is the point of black listing a company if they are going to be awarded plum contracts. This contract is even more dangerous because it puts at risk the future of scores of aspirants who rely on JKSSB to conduct recruitment exams,” Omar said.

Talking to reporters on the sidelines of the foundation day event of Apni Party at Sanat Nagar, President of the party, Altaf Bukhari urged LG Administration to intervene and take immediate action the infamous agencies involved in various scams on Jammu and Kashmir.

“I request LG Sinha to look into the concerns of protesting aspirants on the occasion of holi and fill their lives with colour and scrap the contract with the infamous Aptech immediately,” Bukhari said.

PDP Chief, Mehbooba Mufti while taking a dig at CBI, expressed her astonishment over CBI’s message asking people not to pay any bribe to government employees.

“Amusing to receive a message from CBI to report bribes. A blacklisted company like APTECH is given contracts repeatedly to wreak the future of JK youth. Hope CBI takes note of the APTECH recruitment scam. Lets see how many heads roll.” Mehbooba wrote on her Twitter handle.

Notably, scores of JKSSB aspirants assembled at Press Enclave to register their protest against the purported grant of contract to APTECH Ltd. to conduct various exams in Jammu and Kashmir.

“You live thanks to this company!” The politician’s comment for the selfies asked of Maria De Filippi during the funeral home: his words

    [ad_1]

Also Mario Adinolfi on selfie with Maria De Filippi intervenes to have his say. Taking pictures with the widow, albeit famous, in front of the coffin of her husband, Maurizio Costanzo, also famous, is in bad taste for the Italian journalist and politician. But Adinolfi continues arguing that, moreover, the presenter lives thanks to this company, so nothing strange.

The Italian journalist and politician has decided to comment on the ugly gesture of some fans who, in the funeral home set up for Maurice Costanzothey asked for a photo with Maria De Filippi, his fourth wife, who was widowed.

In fact, someone had the courage to ask the host of You’ve Got Mail for a selfie, visibly grief-stricken. Many people have criticized both the fans and De Filippi’s choice to comply with their requests. To these voices is added that of Mario Adinolfi.

Adinolfi, in fact, said that it was obviously an indelicate and inappropriate gesture. But then he took the opportunity to attack Maria De Filippi, almost as if to tell her that she brought it on herself.

If you live thanks to a clouded society that ‘dances with the stars’ and is passionate about polemic controversies, you cannot preach to poor people who ask for selfies from the famous widow of the deceased famous. It is true that it is indelicate to ask, but De Filippi knows that it is a price to pay.

Mario Adinolfi, selfie with Maria De Filippi: his post on social media causes discussion

The journalist’s words were deeply criticized. The public on Twitter responded in kind to Adinolfi, for a comment according to many as inappropriate as the request for a selfie in front of Costanzo’s coffin.

In fact, there are those who argue that Mario Adinolfi showed the same zero empathy that the people who asked the widow to pose in the funeral home showed, where many said their last goodbyes to her husband.

AAP urges EC to curb ‘allurements’ by politicians in Karnataka

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has submitted a complaint to the State Election Commission of Karnataka, seeking “severe punishment” against political parties that are enticing voters with incentives such as cookers, sarees, bangles, and silver Ganesha idols.

“It is challenging to identify when and where corrupt politicians distribute items such as cookers and sarees to voters,” AAP’s Karnataka unit working president Mohan Dasari said while addressing the media on Friday.

“Our honest volunteers were able to investigate and uncover such instances. Despite the difficulties, we were able to convince voters to return the items and bring them to light. It’s concerning that politicians are giving away items like silver Ganesha idols, leading to questions about the fairness of the election. The Election Commission needs to take immediate action against these practices,” he added.

“The BJP, Congress, and the JD-S are undermining the principles of democracy by offering gifts to voters,” Dasari said.

Stating that voters should make their decisions based on the background, ideology, accomplishments, and promises of politicians, not by the gifts they receive, the AAP leader said: “These politicians are using the tax money of the public, which they have looted during their tenure, to bribe voters. The public should not be swayed by such tactics and instead vote for honesty and integrity.”

“Politicians are taking advantage of the fact that the model code of conduct is only enforced once the election process begins. They are offering bribes even before the code of conduct is in place.

“To ensure a fair election, the Election Commission should take action to stop these bribes before the model code of conduct comes into effect. There should be an investigation to reveal the source of the funds used to make these lavish offers,” he added.
