Iran Prez says Syria visit marks turning point in bilateral ties

    [ad_1]

Tehran: Ebrahim Raisi, who became the first Iranian President to visit Damascus after the Syrian war erupted in 2011, said on Friday that the landmark two-day trip was a “turning point” in improving bilateral political, economic, trade and security ties.

Raisi told reporters here following his arrival from Syria that the trip was of great importance for both sides and the region after 12 years of resistance by the Syrian people and government against enemies’ conspiracies and seditious acts, Xinhua news agency reported citing local media.

He noted that Iran appreciates Syria’s resistance against the “tough attacks,” and Tehran’s support in the process made Syria and the region believe that Iran is a “strong pillar” they can trust and rely on.

    MS Education Academy

The two sides are capable of enhancing cooperation regarding economic and trade relations, said the President, noting that they have signed 15 documents on cooperation in the fields of producing and distributing energy, establishing joint banks and insurance companies, reducing trade tariffs, enhancing transit among Iran, Iraq and Syria and reviving Syria’s agricultural, industrial and energy sectors.

Raisi had reached Damascus on Wednesday for extensive political and economic talks with his Syrian counterpart, Bashar al-Assad, with a high-level political and economic delegation.

Apple set quarterly record in India, country at a tipping point: Tim Cook

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Apple set a quarterly record in the January-March period in India and grew very strong, in double digits year-over-year, said Tim Cook, the company’s CEO who was in India last month to open the first branded retail stores in Mumbai and New Delhi.

Apple reported a record revenue of $94.8 billion for its March quarter which was better than expectations.

“Looking at the business in India, we did set a quarterly record, grew very strong, double digits year-over-year. So it was quite a good quarter for us, taking a step back, India is an incredibly exciting market. It’s a major focus for us. I was just there, and the dynamism in the market, the vibrancy is unbelievable,” Cook told analysts during the earnings call late on Thursday.

    MS Education Academy

Over time, he said, Apple has been expanding operations in India to serve more customers.

“Three years ago, we launched the Apple Store online, and then, we launched two stores just a few weeks ago, and they’re off to a great start, one in Mumbai and one in Delhi,” said Cook.

Apple has got a number of channel partners in the country as well.

“Overall, I couldn’t be more delighted and excited by the enthusiasm I’m seeing for the brand there. There are a lot of people coming into the middle class, and I really feel that India is at a tipping point, and it’s great to be there,” said the Apple CEO.

The company achieved all-time records in Mexico, Indonesia, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the UAE, as well as a number of March quarter records, including in Brazil, Malaysia and India.

  • All signs still point to a DeSantis run, despite the naysayers

All signs still point to a DeSantis run, despite the naysayers

    [ad_1]

    ap23096602500579

Lawmakers — including those at the top — have come under repeated pressure during their 60-day session to carry out the DeSantis agenda. Some of those in the process have told POLITICO that the governor’s office has taken so much control over bills that the expression “that’s Plaza’s bill” has now emerged — a reference to the first floor of the Capitol where DeSantis operates.

Another sign is DeSantis’ ever-expanding calendar of out-of-state, and now international, travel, such as a planned trip to Israel and apparently Asia. This is not a governor who ventured a lot outside the state before the pandemic hit. These ongoing visits — to promote the book, to promote his “Florida Blueprint” — aren’t being cut back. Just the opposite is happening: The destination list is growing.

And of course, the super PAC that is supporting a DeSantis run continues to ramp up and there are other moves at the Republican Party of Florida and elsewhere are also being carried out. There are a lot of people who are snapping into position in anticipation of an expected run.

Now it is true that the timing of an official presidential campaign launch remains somewhat fuzzy, with dates in both May and June being floated. And no official decision has been made yet because then federal election laws kick in.

But the point is this: Barring some last-minute unforeseen change, DeSantis is on the path to running for president. Some even view that the firepower aimed at the governor by Trump’s team in recent weeks as confirmation that he’s seen as a serious rival. It would appear that everyone will get to see that play out.

  • India’s Tipping Point – The view from inside 7 Racecourse Road

India’s Tipping Point – The view from inside 7 Racecourse Road

    [ad_1]

Can anyone pinpoint the precise date on which India embarked on its economic reforms that enabled the country to transform from a USD 266 billion economy to a nearly USD 3 trillion engine of growth? A new book -India’s Tipping Point by a spokesperson of former prime minister Narasimha Rao fixes this date as July 24, 1991. Because, on the evening of this date the one-month-old government headed by Rao, regarded as a ‘weak’ prime minister unexpectedly abolished the Industries Development and Regulation Act 1951. This Law was the mother of all laws and regulations that gave the power to government to control all economic activities. “The abolition of this Act in more ways than one represented a change in the political, official, and national mindset. While August 15, 1947, placed India on the global political map, July 24, 1991, out it on the international economic map. The innate Indian entrepreneurship and spirit of innovation, were unshackled, significantly contributing to the rewriting of India’s destiny”, writes the author of this book S. Narendra. The book coincides with Narasimha Rao’s centennial anniversary.

Were the 1991 Indian economic reforms undertaken under the pressure of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that extended to the government to avert a financial crisis? The answer is an emphatic ‘No’. The IMF did not even hint that the government should abolish IDRA and dismantle both the foundation and the superstructure of what was called ‘the Licence-Permit raj’ that prevailed for nearly 40 years after India became a free  Republic.

The people born since 1991 may be less aware of India’s dire economic and political situation when a new government took office. Prime Minister Narasimha Rao headed a minority government. During the recent parliamentary election, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi had been assassinated. Two previous governments had collapsed after short tenures. The prevailing political instability offered no hope of India coming out of the political mess combined with an economic crisis. Militancy and violence had peaked in the states of Punjab and J&K. There was social and political unrest in several parts of India. India’s external environment was in flux, due to the break-up of the Soviet Union and unprecedented internal political changes in Europe. The international oil prices had risen, worsening India’s economic woes. Both within the ruling Congress party and the opposition consisting of BJP, left parties, and influential sections of the Indian business were opposed to economic reforms. Rao government was criticized by the latter as having compromised India’s sovereignty. He responded by presciently asserting that the reforms would go to make India an engine of growth in Asia and the world economy.

    MS Education Academy

Narendra’s book is an insider account of the working of the government that had embarked on changing India’s approach to the economy and the internal politics of the times. It attempts to answer several questions which had been aired in those years-Was Rao an economic reformer? Did he slow down the pace of changes? Is Narasimha Rao legacy limited to the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya and stood accused as contributed to the destruction of the Masjid because he was ‘indecisive’? A few major scandals and scams (Harshad Mehta Stock market scam) broke out, damaging his government’s image as corrupt. What was the prime minister’s approach to them?

The book Tipping Pont interestingly offers an account of the way prime minister Rao leveraged his economic reforms to subtly transform India’s foreign policy giving it greater economic content which remarkably changed the perception of India abroad. Further, the first time there is an account of how the former prime minister brought normalcy in the militancy-ridden J&K. The chapter on ‘Was Narasimha Rao an economic reformer? tries to put on record his extensive new initiatives to change the economic structure of India and makes for boring reading. What is interesting is that the author offers an explanation for making his finance minister Dr Manmohan Singh the face of his economic policy, rarely claiming credit for himself.

The readers may or may not agree with Narendra’s version of the development and events dealt with in the book. However, it could serve as a source for political historians researching into a critical period in India’s recent history.

Serial deaths of cows in Karnataka village, locals point fingers at BJP Yatra

    [ad_1]

Raichur: Seven cows have been reported to have died and eight others critically ill after allegedly eating waste food in the Gunjalli village in Raichur district.

The locals on Thursday alleged that the cows ate waste food piled up in the village after the Vijay Sankalp Yatra of the BJP.

The locals said that so far seven cows have died and eight cows are critically ill after consuming the leftover food and waste materials. Even buffaloes and other animals have also taken ill. The abdomen of several cows are bloated and farmers who reared them have expressed shock and anger over the development.

The Vijay Sankalp Yatra was organised at Gunjalli on March 10. Thousands of people participated in the rally and BJP had organised lunch for the party workers and supporters. After the lunch, the leftover food and waste materials were thrown at an open field and the cattle ate them and developed sickness.

Last month, two cows died after eating rice packed in plastic covers in Vaikuntha Pura village of Sringeri taluk following the Pancha Ratna Yatra of JD(S).

The people are slamming the BJP, which talks highly of taking care of cows, for not disposing of the food appropriately that has resulted in the cow deaths.

Comment | This is what the organizers of the World Cup don’t want to show – Sunday was the low point of the competi

Today, Slovenia is a superpower in ski jumping, but it was not visible in the ski jump. There was hardly anyone in the actual stands. After all, there was a group standing next to the descent slope.

    Planica

I ski The World Championships had a humor day on the program on Sunday, but it wasn’t funny at all. The day was filled with doubles and mixed team competitions in each of the three sports, which don’t want to fire up the athletes as much as the spectators.

    Mikko Gynther

If this is the future the International Ski Federation wants to take the event towards, the picture is bleak.

The people on the spot voted with their feet, what they thought of the competition format. During the skiing pair sprints, the atmosphere was still moderate, but right after that the fans’ march started. It was not directed towards the stands, but towards the pleasure substances or out of the entire area. It was a sight that the organizers do not want to show on television.

Only a handful stayed to watch the combined mixed team competition organized for the first time. The occupancy rate of the beer and food tent next to the stadium was significantly higher. Of course, it is understandable that if the alternatives are drinking beer and watching couple antics, the choice of many is the first.

In Planica, the value competition drug has not peaked, but Sunday was already somewhat low. Most of those in the stands and along the route had an accreditation or VIP tag hanging from their necks or wore a ribbon from their country’s ski association. Those who showed up for money were few, if not even in the minority.

The competition itself was as relaxed as the atmosphere. Only eight countries participated. The differences were shocking, even though the ski runs were made as short as possible.

Many looked like they would have rather been anywhere else than competing on the ski slopes. The clear number one name in the sport Jarl Magnus Riiber anchored Norway at the end of a leisurely run to the finish line as the winner. He looked as happy as he did a year ago, when he found out about his corona infection, which ruined the Olympic trip.

Even the Norwegian fans couldn’t get excited about the championship.

The “culmination” of the evening was the mixed team hill. Today, Slovenia is a superpower in ski jumping, but it was not visible in the ski jump. There was no one in the actual stand. After all, there was a group standing next to the descent slope.

The average gross salary of Slovenians is well over 2,000 euros. You had to shell out at least 64 euros for the Sunday day ticket. It allowed you to get miles away from the competition venue, as cars are not allowed in the stadium. Accessibility is poor, and there are no large masses of people living in the surrounding areas. I would have thought that even the most inexperienced event organizer would have realized that this equation does not work.

  • Assam: Families point to erroneous’ data in ID cards behind child marriage arrests

Assam: Families point to erroneous’ data in ID cards behind child marriage arrests

    [ad_1]

Morigaon: As more and more young men find themselves behind bars with the Assam government continuing its crackdown on child marriage, their wives are running from pillar to post to find documents to prove they were not underage at the time of wedlock.

Many affected families also claimed that identity documents with “erroneous” birth dates of women were cited by police for registering cases.

A total of 2,241 arrests have been made so far in the state, based on 4,074 FIRs, as part of the crackdown launched four days ago.

An elderly resident of Bhuragaon in Morigaon district claimed that most of the child marriage cases were registered on the basis of data collected from local health workers, who keep track of pregnant women, lactating mothers and families with small children to ensure coverage of government schemes.

“These health workers use Aadhaar card information, as this is the latest document in possession of the villagers. However, errors related to birth dates have been spotted in the Aadhaar cards, but no one took serious note,” he told PTI.

Another villager, Jamaluddin, whose son Rajibul Hussain is in police custody, alleged that he was arrested based on the date of birth of his daughter-in-law as mentioned in the Aadhaar card.

“She had provided her Aadhaar details to our local ASHA baidew’ (elder sister) during pregnancy. We never knew that the mistake in the year of birth by the authorities will cost us so dearly,” Jamaluddin said.

His daughter-in-law has to now visit her paternal house in Morigaon town to fetch the old identity documents “with the correct date of birth”.

The names of those affected have been changed to protect their identities.

The father of Rashidul Hussain, another youth of the same village behind bars in the case, also maintained that “error” in a government identity card led to his son’s arrest.

The date of birth as per identity documents submitted to local health workers like ASHA or Anganwadi volunteers also led to Ronita Biswas and Simpi Roy Mondal landing up at a government shelter home in Morigaon, after their husbands’ arrest.

“Most of the women brought to the government shelters have been identified as per records furnished by the local health workers, and those pregnant or with young children have been given priority to ensure they are taken care of,” a staff member of such a shelter home said.

“These facilities have limited resources. We are trying to make sure that women left alone and in need of help are given a place to stay till they can make proper alternative arrangements,” the member said.

Responding to allegations of arrests made on the basis of wrong information in identity cards, a police officer said such claims will have to be proved before court.

“They have been using the Aadhaar cards and other documents to avail all government benefits. Why didn’t they point out such errors before?” he said.

“We will continue the drive as per law, and the accused and their families can take recourse of legal means for relief,” the officer added.
