Witzeal CEO: Responsible Gaming Is Critical for Industry Growth

Ankur Singh, Founder and CEO of Gurugram-based gaming company Witzeal Technologies, recently argued that responsible gaming is critical for the development of the industry and that the Indian online gaming market must create and maintain a ”safe and welcoming space” for players in order to preserve its solid growth trajectory.

The country’s online gaming market has reached a size of $2.2 billion and is projected to expand further to $5 billion, driven on the one hand by rising smartphone penetration, cheap mobile data plans, and growing disposable incomes, and on the other hand supported by increasing levels of player engagement and diversification of monetization schemes.

This promising growth, however, is accompanied by an alarming spread of online fraud, identity or data theft, and other types of cyber crimes, including online harassment and bullying in multiplayer settings. Risks related to online gaming could also involve individual mental health and financial wellbeing, as cases of addiction and problem gambling have also been reported.

For these reasons, Ankur Singh urges for a system of responsible gaming policies and requirements applicable to operators and players alike, including restricting access of minors to real money games, strong privacy and data protection, play time or money spending limits, among other measures.

“Responsible gaming is critical for sustaining the integrity and actual enjoyment of online gaming. It is the responsibility of both the players and the platform to conduct ethical gaming so that it continues to generate employment and revenues for the country,” Witzeal’s Singh concludes.

Responsible Gaming Is Expected on the Players’ Side

Industry representatives see responsible gaming as the way to build a sustainable business, but studies have established that the majority of players themselves expect responsible gaming policies to be there to guarantee their safety. What’s more, most players behave responsibly even if it is not explicitly required by the gaming platform or the government.

Two thirds of online players around the world say that they would choose to play a socially responsible game over one that has no such aspect. Likewise, the studies reveal, the majority of players in India would also welcome a safer gaming environment, even though this would necessitate the imposition of certain play restrictions.

According to the Gambling Commission of the UK – a national gaming authority with long traditions in overseeing a mature gambling market, social responsibility in gambling has three main aspects: keeping crime out of gambling, conducting gambling in a fair and open way, and protecting children and other vulnerable people from harm and exploitation.

Typical responsible gaming tools include digital ID checks, advisory pop-ups and warnings triggered by player behaviour, deposit and sign-in time limits, as well as providing players with easy access to an array of self-exclusion and time-out options, as well as to various free support and counselling resources.

Collected empirical evidence shows that such responsible gaming mechanisms effectively mitigate negative consequences in cases of loss of control due to player inexperience, “binge gambling”, or other reasons, and help protect vulnerable groups such as problem gamblers and juveniles.

  • Day after rout, Indian players back in nets; Shami set to play in Ahmedabad

Day after rout, Indian players back in nets; Shami set to play in Ahmedabad

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A day after an embarrassing nine-wicket rout at the hands of Australia, some of India’s Test squad members were back at the Holkar Stadium for a gruelling 90-minute net session.

With head coach Rahul Dravid and batting coach Vikram Rathour for company, opener Shubman Gill, middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer, all-rounders Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav sweated it out in two nets adjacent to the match strip.

The third Test, played on an extremely turning pitch with variable bounce, ended in just over two days.

While Kuldeep had a long bowl at the nets, the other four enjoyed extended batting sessions against local net bowlers and also faced throwdowns.

There were no experimental or innovative shot selections but plain and simple copybook batting as they looked to get some form back before the fourth and final Test, starting in Ahmedabad from March 9.

Shami set to be back in playing XI

India’s senior-most speedster Mohammed Shami is expected to feature in the playing XI for the final Test after being rested as part of workload management during the Indore game.

The Indian team management, in consultation with its medical staff, has decided to space out the pace bowlers, who are going to play the IPL and are in the ODI World Cup plans.

Hence Shami, who had played the first two Tests and is also a part of the ODI squad, was rested for the third game. In his place, Umesh Yadav was drafted in as the second pacer after Mohammed Siraj.

With Siraj bowling only 24 overs in the first three games for one wicket, Umesh, with his better show in Indore, and who is not part of the white ball set-up, stands a good chance to share the new ball with Shami in Ahmedabad.

Siraj is likely to feature in all three ODIs between March 17 to 22 and will probably get some time off during the final game at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

Shami, who has been the best pacer on view across both teams with seven scalps from 30 odd overs in the series, will be needed on a dry Motera surface that might be conducive for reverse swing.

India are currently leading the series 2-1 but need to win the last game, in order to nullify the result of Sri Lanka’s upcoming away series against New Zealand, and qualify for the World Test Championship final.

GCA curators haven’t received any directive from Team India

The pitch at Holkar Stadium has been rated by ICC match referee Chris Broad as “poor”, and the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) is unlikely to risk its reputation by preparing something that attracts the attention of the the game’s governing body for the wrong reason.

“We haven’t received any instructions from the Indian team management and our local curators are preparing a normal track as we have always done through the season,” a state association source told PTI on Saturday.

“In fact, last Ranji game over here in January, Railways scored 500 plus (508) batting first and Gujarat, although suffered innings defeat, scored 200 plus in both innings. It won’t be too different this time,” he said.

There are 96 hours still left for the Test match to begin and one doesn’t know what will happen once BCCI curators Taposh Chatterjee and Ashsh Bhowmick take over.

“Obviously, last few days the BCCI’s grounds and pitches committee instruct the local curator. But, certainly, from our end our endeavour is to produce a good Test match pitch,” the official said.

The last time two Test matches were held in Ahmedabad, they ended in just under two days.

“You have to factor in that the Day/Night Test and the one after that were the first ones held after the stadium was refurbished and you had no clue how the pitch will pan out,” he added.

Kohli visits Mahakaleshwar Temple with wife

With the third Test ending way before schedule, star batter Virat Kohli and wife Anushka Sharma on Saturday visited Shree Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain to offer prayers.

While some of the players stayed back in Indore, a few, including skipper Rohit Sharma, returned to Mumbai and will join the team in Ahmedabad on March 6.

German Chancellor visits cricket stadium in Bengaluru, spends time with RCB players

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Sunday visited the M Chinnaswamy cricket stadium here and interacted with men and women players of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru team.

Scholz spoke to the officials of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), RCB men and women team members for about 15 minutes.

The Chancellor understands that cricket is India’s number one passion when it comes to sports, a German Embassy official said.

“In Germany, cricket is not as popular. Although more than 200,000 Indians in Germany are popularising the sport there,” he said.
So, Scholz wanted to acclimatise himself about the sport and what cricket means to India, the official added.

“Moreover, he wanted to understand what the RCB, both the men’s and women’s team, mean to the city, especially as the RCB women’s team embark on the first season of the Women’s Premier League,” the official further said.

Earlier, the German Chancellor arrived at the Kempegowda International Airport in the afternoon. Karnataka Health Minister K Sudhakar, along with the German Consulate officials and Bengaluru Police Commissioner C H Pratap Reddy received him.

Later, Sudhakar tweeted: “Welcomed the Chancellor of Germany, His Excellency @OlafScholz to Bangalore at Kempegowda International Airport today. This is the first visit from a Chancellor of Germany to India, since 2011, when the Inter-Governmental Consultation (IGC) was set up between our two countries.”

Scholz is on a two-day trip to India. On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held bilateral talks with the visiting German Chancellor in Delhi.

  • Kashmiri bat manufacturing company to provide platform to talented players to reach international level

    [ad_1]

    Jahangeer Ganaie

Anantnag, Feb 24: For the very first time, a known cricket manufacturing company from South Kashmir’s Anantnag district has taken an initiative to provide a platform to talented cricketers of Kashmir to reach international level.

Gr8 Sports, a bat manufacturing company from Halmulla Anantnag, has signed MoU with various international cricket boards and leagues to vanguard the talent from Kashmir.

Owner of the company Fawzul Kabiir while talking to news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) said that he has witnessed that cricket players in Kashmir are very much talented but they lack the platform to reach to the mega stages.

“We have taken up initiative to provide them a platform so that they get an opportunity to reach to international level and prove their mettle,” he said.

Any professional cricketer below 36 years of age can make videos of his signature shots and upload them while tagging Gr8 Sports on social media, he said, adding that every video of batting, bowling or wicket keeping will be analyzed by experts and management companies and shortlist players.

Kabiir said that every year shortlisted players will undergo trials before selection committee members of international cricket boards and International league franchisees, who will select them for different leagues.

“Every year around 100 batsmen, 100 bowlers and around 50 wicket keepers will be shortlisted who will have to undergo trials and can reach international level as selection will be done on spot in Kashmir,” he said.

“Our aim behind this initiative is just to promote local talent and we have signed MoU with at least 10 cricket playing nations and if our players will be able to showcase talent, they can reach international leagues like Carabian League, BPL,” he added.

Let players play their normal cricket and make videos and upload them while tagging us and Mobica-our talent management company will access and on that basis screening will be done and players will be shortlisted.

After shortlisting, international coaches of franchises and international boards will be brought here one by one and will select players from shortlists on the basis of data base uploaded and trials, he said.

He said that even children have exposure to leather ball cricket and he is hopeful that local cricket players will be able to showcase their talent anywhere in the world.

“It will be a big opportunity for talented youth to make their career besides that it will help in keeping youth away from social evils and generate income as well,” he said.

When asked why he is sponsoring players, he said that mostly sponsored players are being used as advertising agents only and they don’t get proper opportunity as we want to make stars not marketing agents.

“The Company has also decided to start a monthly show that will be live on social media platforms where queries of players will be answered besides that international players will guide talented players as well,” he said.

“We want to provide talented players every opportunity to groom them into stars and this program will be started from March 2023,” he said.

It’s official: Labor chief Walsh jumps ship for hockey players’ union

    [ad_1]

    ap23047728951096

Walsh will step in for Don Fehr, who has led the NHLPA since 2010.

Walsh built his political profile as a union leader in Boston, and his ties to organized labor were a key factor in President Joe Biden’s decision to name him Labor secretary. He was a highly visible surrogate for Biden and the White House, selling the administration’s message on the road and on television.

“I am forever grateful to President Biden not only for the faith he placed in me, but for his steady, transformative and historic leadership on behalf of working people everywhere,” Walsh said in an email sent to Labor Department staff. “I leave the Department with a deeper understanding of why working people are the heart and soul and strength of our nation.”

Once he steps down, Deputy Secretary Julie Su is set to take charge of DOL on an acting basis. Su is also a leading contender to succeed Walsh, and has the backing of a number of Senate Democrats and influential union leaders.

In his email, Walsh praised Su as “an incredible leader” and expressed faith in her ability to lead the department when he leaves.

“With the kind of leadership and talent assembled across the Department, I am confident there will be continuity and the work will be sustained,” he wrote.

Walsh will become the latest high-profile official to exit the Biden administration in recent weeks, following chief of staff Ron Klain, National Economic Council Director Brian Deese, and communications director Kate Bedingfield, among others.

  • Gatland would not support Wales players if they strike for England fixture

Gatland would not support Wales players if they strike for England fixture

    [ad_1]

Warren Gatland has said he would not support his Wales players should they carry out a threat of strike action when England are due to visit Cardiff in the Six Nations a week on Saturday.

A dispute between the players and the governing body intensified on Tuesday when the Welsh Rugby Players’ Association (WRPA) raised the possibility of an unprecedented strike in protest at the proposed six-year deal between the regions and the Welsh Rugby Union.

The new contractual arrangement would mean players’ basic wages being reduced and the introduction of a new bonus structure, but the players are determined not to accept the terms. On Wednesday the Professional Rugby Board (PRB) said there is no room for negotiation, prompting an angry response from the WRPA.

A deadline of 28 February – three days after the encounter against England – has been set for the deal to be finalised. But after the players accepted a 20% wage reduction during the Covid-19 pandemic, it seems unlikely they will agree to a further cut.

Asked if he would support a player strike, Gatland said: “No. I completely support the stance they are taking, in terms of wanting to get some resolution about the issues they have. But there is a lot more involved, a lot of things at stake, in terms of ensuring that that fixture does take place … I am supportive of the players and the things they are trying to do. My role is just trying to prepare the team for next week.”

Sitting alongside the head coach at the team’s base near Cardiff, the former Wales captain Alun Wyn Jones said a strike was “the very last option” but that players feel “boxed in” by the proposal and restrictions that come with it. Regulations state that players who sign for clubs outside Wales are eligible for national selection only if they have won more than 60 caps, which significantly limits options for younger players.

“This was supposed to be sorted a long time ago,” he said. “It is disappointing that we are 20 years into regional rugby and it’s the same things that have come around again.”

On the possibility of a player strike, he said: “It’s hard to deny, but it’s the very last option. Ultimately, if you treat people badly for long enough, you get to where we find ourselves. We realise what we do, and how fortunate we are to do it, but if this was any other line of work or any other industry … you’d get the same reaction.”

On whether he feels regret and sadness at the situation having deteriorated to such an extent, he said: “Very much so. But you don’t want to see players in their early 20s not knowing where their career is going to go. You’re almost boxed in as a player with no option, which isn’t ideal for anyone.”

The pressure is on to resolve the dispute before next week’s Six Nations match, particularly in view of the revenue generated for the union. On how a strike may be averted, Jones said: “We want a voice as well and a discussion about scrapping the 60-cap rule. We are well aware there are rebalances that need to be made financially, but again, it comes down to players being boxed in.”

    Quick Guide

Tadhg Beirne out of Six Nations with ankle injury

    Show

Ireland lock Tadhg Beirne will miss the remainder of the Six Nations after being ruled out for up to 12 weeks with an ankle injury.

The 31-year-old Munster player was due to undergo surgery on Thursday, having been forced off early in the second half of Saturday’s 32-19 win over France in Dublin.

British and Irish Lion Beirne, who has started his country’s last 14 Tests, left the Aviva Stadium on crutches, with his forthcoming absence a major blow for Andy Farrell’s team.

Grand Slam-chasing Ireland sit top of the championship table on the back of bonus-point wins over Wales and France ahead of a round-three trip to Italy on February 25.

Ulster captain Iain Henderson replaced Beirne on Saturday and is the obvious choice to come into the second row to partner James Ryan in Rome.

Leinster pair Ryan Baird and Joe McCarthy and Connacht’s Cian Prendergast are the other options available to Farrell. PA Media

    Thank you for your feedback.

Gatland, who rejoined Wales as head coach in December after the dismissal of Wayne Pivac with less than a year to prepare for the World Cup in France, said: “The players have been great in the last few days. They have got a separate issue they want sorted, but when it’s come to the rugby they have been fantastic, the way they have prepared.

“It’s a little disingenuous to say the players are being paid too much. I don’t see how it’s a fault of theirs. We’ve been overspending in Wales for a number of years and some of the regions are in financial difficulty.”

  • WRU says ‘no room for manoeuvre’ on contracts despite players’ strike threat

WRU says ‘no room for manoeuvre’ on contracts despite players’ strike threat

    [ad_1]

The Welsh Rugby Union and the Welsh regions have said there is “no room for manoeuvre” on the budget for player contracts in Wales despite the threat of strike action putting next week’s Six Nations fixture against England in jeopardy.

Nigel Walker, the WRU’s interim chief executive, met with senior Wales players on Wednesday in an attempt to soothe relations after it emerged strike action was being considered over the contract renewals, with a meeting soon to take place between the Welsh Rugby Players Association and players.

Having accepted pay cuts of 20% during the Covid period, players in Wales are now faced with further cuts under the proposed six-year deal between the WRU and the regions. The take-or-leave-it deal which has to be signed by 28 February – three days after the England game – would see lower wages all round and bonuses introduced into contracts for the first time.

However, the Professional Rugby Board, the body which consists of representatives of the four regions plus the WRU, said the new deal was necessary to bring sustainability to the sport.

“The new agreement offers a complete funding package to the professional game in Wales, but it does come with financial limitations which will directly affect salary negotiations,” said the PRB chair, Malcolm Wall, in a statement on Wednesday evening. “The cold facts are that the WRU and clubs have been paying salaries that their businesses cannot afford, so the new agreement establishes a new framework for contract negotiations.

“There is a stipulation that all current contracts will be honoured, but these businesses must return to a sustainable footing in order for the success we all crave to follow.

“The average salary of a Welsh professional rugby player under the new framework will be around £100k per year. We are confident that our salary packages are in line with the UK market. The PRB accepts that some better-funded English and French clubs are paying more, but this is where we must set the mark of sustainability in Wales.”

The PRB’s statement added that there was “no room for manoeuvre when it comes to the overall budget available for player contracts”. Walker said: “We know we are not in an ideal situation, but it is incredibly important for the whole game in Wales for us to get this next step right.”

Meanwhile, the Ospreys lock and former Wales international Bradley Davies has urged the PRB to listen to players’ concerns over the future of rugby in the country and to make the changes necessary to avoid a strike.

Davies, a second-row capped 66 times by his country and still in action for the Ospreys at the age of 36, said strike action is the “last option” for players and that a lack of representation at the top of the game in Wales is as big a frustration for players across the four regional teams as proposals for another pay cut.

“We choose to be rugby players. We aren’t asking for more money, we are just asking for a voice in the way things are run – player welfare, how many games you play, head injury stuff, mental health,” he said. “As players we have zero input into all that at the moment. All the boys want is a bit of communication.

“Let’s all get around a table, let’s speak, let’s make Welsh rugby good again. We are not far off it. If we had to strike, and that was the decision everyone made, then fair enough – but it’s the last, last option.”

While players have been offered verbal commitments from their regions, nothing can be firmed up until the new deal is signed. Some players have already left, many others are considering moves to England and abroad and, at a more basic level, many others are concerned for their financial futures.

“The WRPA has improved 10-fold since I first became a member and the people involved now are outstanding,” said Davies. “But we’re still not where we need to be. We haven’t got representation on the PRB and can’t put the players’ point of view across.

“During Covid, we accepted all the pay cuts, we didn’t argue one bit. We just accepted everything that was chucked at us. All we wanted was a voice and a seat on the board, and that was stopped. Yet we’re expected to rock up for work, run into a brick wall, take our money and then get up Monday and go again. All the boys are asking for is a bit of a say in their own destiny.”
