  • Dutch PM Rutte wants EU to play it frugal in face of mega US subsidies

Dutch PM Rutte wants EU to play it frugal in face of mega US subsidies

    [ad_1]

    switzerland davos forum 67093

Don’t inject fresh money into the European Union — just reform national policies, says Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte.

That’s the best way to prevent EU industry from getting wiped out by U.S. companies under Washington’s major new green subsidies scheme, Rutte told a group of journalists at the office of the Dutch embassy to the EU in Brussels on Tuesday.

“There’s so much money at this moment in the system,” Rutte said shortly after meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo. He also argued for deeper reforms, stressing how some European countries spend so much on their pension systems — “all money you cannot spend on innovation and green tech.”

Rutte is often viewed as the key leader of the so-called “frugal” group of European countries, comprised of like-minded fiscally conservative nations. The group, which also includes Denmark and Sweden, has been reluctant to increase national contributions to EU coffers — at least until the coronavirus pandemic forced them to partly adjust that line.

The discussion among EU decision-makers on how to preserve the bloc’s industrial base is taking place ahead of a meeting of EU leaders next month as the U.S. moves to roll out a $369 billion industrial subsidy scheme to support green industries under the so-called Inflation Reduction Act.

The U.S. legislation has stoked fears about consequences for European industry and sparked calls to revisit rules on state aid. Another concern is that such subsidies put the EU’s single market at risk by conferring an outsized advantage to countries with larger fiscal capacity, such as Germany, which have more space to financially maneuver.

Rutte, who was recently in Washington to visit U.S. President Joe Biden, said: “There are a number of consequences to this Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) — but unintended.” The IRA “forces us to think about how we organize ourselves” to remain competitive, he added.

On the one hand, he sees U.S. attempts to meet climate targets as a positive development. On the other hand, he pointed to risks to having a level playing field, like with electric mobility. “Companies might shift investments from the EU to the U.S.,” he said, parroting a much-repeated fear.

But EU subsidies should remain unaltered, Rutte argued. Regarding calls to adapt to the IRA by changing EU aid rules, he conceded: “I can accept some changes as long as they are limited.”

Rutte was clear on his belief that no fresh EU money should be put on the table. “I mean, not grants, but even not loans,” he said. “There’s so much still around” — for example loans in the Recovery and Resilience Facility, the centerpiece of the EU’s pandemic recovery plan.

A draft of the text that leaders would seek to agree on at their upcoming European Council meeting hints at opening up new sources of EU funding. The draft, seen by POLITICO, makes calls “to take work forward building notably on the success of the SURE programme,” referring to the EU’s loans-based program to support employment floated by Rome and others.

Rutte stressed that he would not like to see this proposal in the text, which will be discussed by EU ambassadors on Wednesday.

On the question of whether he’d be in favor of a new SURE program, “My answer would be that we have serious doubts,” he said.

    Barbara Moens contributed reporting.

Newly inaugurated Mumbai Metro to play ‘Mood Banayela’ song every hour

    [ad_1]

On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated two new Mumbai Metro lines, line 2A (Dahisar to Andheri West D.N. Nagar) and line 7 (Dahisar East to Andheri East). PM Modi was accompanied by Maharashtra chief minister Eknath Shinde and deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis in a ride from Gundavali to Mogra station.

On Sunday, Deputy CM Devendra Fadnvis issued a statement to MMRDA to mandatorily play ‘Mood Banayela’ song in metro every hour to give the commuter a better experience of traveling. The ‘Mood Banaleya’ song is sung by Amruta Fadnavis.

Opposition accused Devendra Fadnavis of nepotism by promoting his wife’s song, however, Devendra Fadnavis denied these allegations and said that the song is being played to avoid congestion in Mumbai Metro during its initial runs.

Reportedly, the metro witnessed drastic reduce in number of commuters after ‘Mood Banaleya’ song being played but reduction in number of commuters can’t be directly correlated to the song, since it’s Sunday and real impact will be seen on Monday. Details awaited

  • On Netaji’s birth anniversary eve, Trinamool and BJP play their political cards

On Netaji’s birth anniversary eve, Trinamool and BJP play their political cards

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: As the country is all set to celebrate the 126th birth anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, politics over the issue is heating up in West Bengal where the great Indian freedom fighter has his roots. The ruling Trinamool Congress and the principal opposition BJP have their own political cards to play in the matter.

The Trinamool Congress-led state government has recently announced the decision to set up a ‘Jai Hind Vahini’ on the lines of the National Cadet Corps (NCC).

This announcement has led to a political slugfest in the state where the opposition parties have denounced it as a blatant attempt to politicize the Netaji issue. This is especially so in the backdrop of the recent development in which the office of the additional director general, West Bengal & Sikkim Directorate, NCC, had pointed out how the careers of over one lakh NCC cadets have been affected because of the non-payment of its share of expenditure by the state government.

According to CPI(M) central committee member Sujan Chakraborty, the Trinamool Congress reportedly has a branch organization whose name is also Jai Hind Vahini.

“So, is this yet another attempt to politicize the school education sphere through this move under the garb of paying homage to Netaji? What is the justification of this move, when the NCC is there?” he questioned.

Somewhat on the same lines, the BJP’s state spokesman Samik Bhattacharya too has criticized the move.

He said: “The entire school education system in West Bengal is going through a deep crisis because of the massive teachers’ recruitment irregularity scam. In such a situation this move on Jai Hind Vahini is nothing but a joke in the name of Netaji. First, the state government should try to revive the education system by cleaning it up.”

Trinamool Congress senior legislator Tapas Roy rubbished the opposition criticism by describing it as an unnecessary attempt to politicize each and every issue.

Roy said: “No one is saying that the Jai Hind Vahini will be set up, sacrificing the existing NCC scheme. This is just to pay homage to Netaji on the occasion of his birth anniversary. The opposition in reality does not have any respect for the great souls of the nation and hence they unnecessarily politicize the entire issue.”

Meanwhile, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat’s scheduled program to pay homage to Netaji in front of Shahid Minar in Kolkata on January 23 has stirred controversy in West Bengal.

Although the RSS cannot be strictly defined as a political force, major political parties in West Bengal and even some analysts feel that the saffron camp will surely try to gain political mileage by this move of Bhagwat before the West Bengal panchayat polls in 2023 and more importantly the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

According to Trinamool Congress’s state vice-president Jai Prakash Majumdar, it is intriguing why the RSS chief for the first time chose to pay tribute to Netaji and more especially why he chose Kolkata as the venue.

“It is clear that the move is to give BJP some oxygen in the state before the panchayat polls. The RSS has never shown any respect for Netaji before. Even Netaji refused to meet Vinayak Damodar Savarkar,” Majumdar said.

The CPI(M)’s central committee member Robin Deb feels that the RSS and the Trinamool Congress have always operated on a mutual admiration basis, where Mamata Banerjee describes RSS as the true warriors against the communists and the latter equates her with Goddess Durga.

“This same tradition of mutual admiration is continuing where Netaji’s birth anniversary celebration has just become a medium,” Deb added.

Historian AK Das too cannot recollect the RSS celebrating the birth anniversary of Netaji so elaborately and that too in West Bengal with the Sangh chief himself being present.

“At least history does not speak of any connection or synergy of thoughts between Netaji and RSS. But that cannot stop anyone from paying homage to this great freedom fighter. But considering the timing with two major elections coming up, the coinciding of the event with any political motive cannot be totally ruled out,” Das said.

Netaji’s grandnephew Chandra Kumar Bose, who is himself a face of the BJP in West Bengal, said that this hypocrisy over the great Indian freedom fighter should come to an end now. “Either one should oppose Netaji or accept and practice his ideology of secularism and inclusivity true to its spirit,” he said.

  • Fair Play review – knockout thriller pits a couple against each other

Fair Play review – knockout thriller pits a couple against each other

    [ad_1]

In the first scene of the punchy Sundance thriller Fair Play, a New York couple, Luke (Alden Ehrenreich) and Emily (the Bridgerton breakout Phoebe Dynevor), are covered in blood. They’re at his brother’s wedding and are so desperately in heat for one another that they soon find themselves in the bathroom, him performing oral sex before group photos are taken. But Emily is on her period and between cleaning themselves off and laughing at the unfortunate timing, a ring falls out of Luke’s pocket and suddenly they’re engaged. A marriage forged in blood.

It’s no real spoiler to say that it’s a nasty omen of what’s to come, the writer-director Chloe Domont’s ruthless, and ruthlessly entertaining, feature debut taking a happy young couple and throwing them into chaos. There’s something darkly gratifying about that formula, one we haven’t seen as much of recently but that dominated the 80s and 90s. While there’s a definite throwback vibe to Fair Play, Domont isn’t interested in merely repeating what’s come before.

Luke and Emily don’t just live together – they also work together as analysts in the high-stakes and high-pressure world of finance, forced to abide by company policy and keep their relationship secret. When a job opens up above them, Emily is thrilled to hear whispers that it might be going to Luke. But when it ultimately ends up hers, the couple is forced into a difficult situation. With the tables turned, Luke finds it harder to support her success and the pair start to unravel.

With a delicacy that more genre films aiming to tackle weightier topics could afford to emulate, Domont cooly constructs a contemporary story about how a gendered disparity in finance and power can wreck a seemingly successful relationship. Emily’s new position is a threat to Luke, to his self-worth and to his masculinity, and it tears at them both, following them back from the office to the bedroom. Back in 1994, the corporate thriller Disclosure posited that the only thing scarier than a woman scorned was a woman scorned who was also your boss, painting a laughably dated portrait of the evils of having women climb the corporate ladder. Fair Play, while recalling many a Michael Douglas thriller from Fatal Attraction to A Perfect Murder, is a smart rebuke to such misogyny. The biggest threat here ends up being a man’s ego.

But Domont also avoids blunting or over-stacking her story, allowing both characters to make wrong moves along the way, with some of Emily’s decisions far from unimpeachable. Bristling tension arises from the small stuff that starts to become unavoidably big, rather than an over-reliance on farfetched plot developments, a sleekly modulated balance of domestic and corporate thrills that mostly feel believably grounded. It’s a film of many, many high-volume arguments but Dynevor and Ehrenreich remarkably avoid even the slightest sign of histrionic excess, expertly carrying over their sexual chemistry to the couple’s more horrible moments – a pair you buy in moments of love as much as you do in moments of hate. Both performances are exceptionally effective, with Ehrenreich returning from his post-Solo slump to remind us why he was seen as the Next Best Thing way back when and Dynevor, a relative newcomer to film, at least, possessing the kind of confident command that should elevate her to the A-list in no time.

Workplace narratives adjacent to this have been relegated to television (there are obvious comparisons to the work-life tension in the equally horny and treacherous world of Industry) but it’s refreshing to see a story such as this self-contained within two hours. There are the odd bits of dead weight (Luke’s obsession with a self-help business guru proving a little clunky) and there’s likely to be some impassioned discussion over one particularly troubling scene in the last act, but Domont ends with a fantastic drop-the-mic moment that had the audience here at Sundance enthusiastically applauding.

Sundance is a competitive market festival and with the film still seeking a buyer, one can expect a fierce bidding war. This one is a winner.
