WFI sexual harassment: Wrestlers warn against using their platform for politics

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The protesting wrestlers on Saturday warned against using their platform for political gains claiming few people are trying to take their fight justice to a different direction even as a defiant WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh said he is ready to face “any kind” of probe but won’t resign from his post.

The wrestlers’ statement came on a day many politicians including Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal met them at their protest site – Jantar Mantar in Delhi.

Extending support, Kejriwal said that those who commit wrongs against women “should be hanged”, while the Congress demanded Singh’s arrest and his ouster as president of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI).

    MS Education Academy

On Friday, Delhi Police registered two FIRs against Singh on allegations of sexual harassment levelled by seven women wrestlers. While the first FIR pertained to allegations of a minor wrestler and was registered under the POCSO Act, the second was related to outraging modesty.

Addressing reporters at his residence in Bishnoharpur, about 40 km from Gonda city in Uttar Pradesh, Singh said, “I am completely innocent and have full faith in the Supreme Court and Delhi Police. I am ready to face any kind of investigation.” He also said “resigning as president of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) is not a big deal for me, but I will not resign as a criminal.” At Jantar Mantar, Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Bajrang Punia, who is one of the protesters, said they won’t let anyone use their platform for political gains.

“A few people are trying to take our movement to a different direction and we strongly refute it. This is a fight for justice for India’s daughters,” he said, but did not mention whom he was referring to.

A group of people was heard raising slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“A lot of people have entered the protest site and trying to project it as a ‘bhadkau andolan’ but this is fight to save Indian wrestling. People who are here (assembled) are in our support but not for any political gains,” said Bajrang.

“Politics and other things are secondary, the dignity and honour of women is first, so please don’t indulge in politics. This is players’ movement, so do not link to any political party,” he added.

Vinesh Phogat also sought to placate the people in position of power.

“All those, who hold constitutional posts (I want to say), that the common man also deserves respect. We respect all, we will not say anything that goes against their honour, but we should also be respected,” she told reporters.

At Gonda, Singh took a strong exception to Vadra’s meeting with the wrestlers saying, “Today it has been seen who is behind this controversy. I have been saying from the beginning that an industrialist and the Congress have a hand in this. They are upset with me.” He, however, did not elaborate.

In the past couple of days Congress party’s Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Rashtriya Lok Dal leader Jayant Chaudhary, former Jammu and Kahsmir Governor Satya Pal Malik, Delhi government ministers Atishi Singh and Suarbah Bhardwaj among others have visited the protest site to extend their support to the athletes.

“I’m not a criminal. Resigning means I have accepted their allegations,” Singh said.

He also questioned why the wrestlers are still sitting on dharna even after FIR was lodged.

The wrestlers had asserted they won’t leave the protest site until Singh is arrested.

Singh claimed this is not a protest of sportspersons but of the “conspirators”. “They did not wait for the investigation report to be made public and went to the Supreme Court and there raised a new allegation. They are saying that the sport has to be saved but they are not saving the game (by doing this). They have caused a huge loss in the last four months,” he said.

Punia also claimed they were being harassed by Delhi Police.

“Last night, they cut our power supply, did not let us bring food and water and even mattresses and takhtas (wooden cots). Even one of the workers, who brought these things to the protest site, has not reached home. The police is not treating the athletes well.

“Is this the honour of the country’s athletes? What’s the point of winning those medals if we had to face all these?” he asked.

Vadra, who reached Jantar Mantar in the morning and interacted with the wrestlers, and accused the government of “protecting” Singh. She also called for his ouster from the post so that he is not able to “exert pressure” on the wrestlers and hamper their careers.

Her party demanded that Singh should be arrested immediately and removed from all posts to help ensure a fair investigation.

“Very serious allegations have been levelled against a BJP MP, who claims himself as a ‘Bahubali’ and on whom more than 40 cases are going on. When such serious charges are made against an MP of the ruling party, in such a situation we demand that Delhi Police should arrest this person immediately so that fair investigation can take place,” party MP Deepender Hooda said. Attacking Indian Olympic Association chief P T Usha, Hooda said one had huge expectations from her who had been a sports icon.

“But her statements against the players that what they were doing is wrong. Usha should do some introspection on whether she should continue to occupy the position she holds, at a time when she should have stood by the players. IOA chief is not a political post, but she did not stand with the players and she disappointed the country and now she should introspect,” he said.

During his visit, Kejriwal said every Indian who loves the country should stand with the wrestlers in their struggle.

Extending his support, he said those who commit such wrongs against women “should be hanged”.

“All these women players who have brought laurels to the country are our daughters, they must get justice. No matter how powerful the accused is, he should be given the harshest punishment,” he later said in a tweet in Hindi.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, who is appearing for the wrestlers in the Supreme Court, in a tweet said, “Wrestler Protest: Electricity and Water cut off but they will wrestle and succeed. While the accused has no conscience to wrestle with!”

Swiggy begins charging Rs 2 ‘platform fee’ per food order from users

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Online food delivery platform Swiggy has started charging all users a “platform fee” of Rs 2 per food order, irrespective of the cart value.

The company told IANS that the additional charges are being levied only on food orders on the main platform and does not apply on Instamart users.

“The platform fee is a nominal flat fee charged on food orders. This fee helps us operate and improve our platform and enhance app features to deliver a seamless app experience,” a Swiggy spokesperson said in a statement.

    MS Education Academy

The platform fee is over and above the convenience and handling fees for food delivery.

As last reported, Swiggy claimed to have processed over 1.5-2 million orders through the day.

People in Hyderabad ordered a whopping 10 lakh biryanis and 4 lakh plates of haleem on leading food-delivery platform Swiggy during the holy month of Ramzan.

In March, the online food delivery platform said it delivered 33 million plates of idlis in the last 12 months, indicating the immense popularity of this dish among customers.

Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai were the top three cities where idlis were ordered the most.

The company, on average, has over 2.5 lakh restaurant partners enabled on its platform, and typically onboards about 10,000 restaurants every month.

Social audio platform Clubhouse lays off over 50 per cent staff

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Popular social audio platform Clubhouse, which gained popularity during the Covid-19 pandemic, has laid off more than half of its staff.

Founded by Paul Davison and Rohan Seth, Clubhouse said it is scaling back by over 50 per cent and “saying goodbye to many talented, dedicated teammates in the process.”

“We’re deeply sorry to be doing this, and we would not be making this change if we didn’t feel it was absolutely necessary,” said the founders.

    MS Education Academy

Those impacted will receive severance and continued healthcare coverage for the next few months.

“We will pay salaries for the rest of April, plus 4 months of additional severance for all departing employees. This means everyone affected will receive their full salary until Aug 31, 2023,” said Davison and Seth.

“We will allow everyone who is impacted to keep their company-issued laptops, to help them research and apply for new roles,” added the founders as they plan to build Clubhouse 2.0 with a smaller, leaner team.

The app was once valued at $4 billion by investors, including Andreessen Horowitz and Tiger Global.

The company last year laid off a portion of staff as part of restructuring.

“We need to reset the company, eliminate roles and take it down to a smaller, product-focused team. We believe that a smaller team will give us focus and speed, and help us launch the next evolution of the product,” the founders said.

Quick commerce platform Dunzo lays off 30% of its workforce

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Homegrown quick-grocery delivery provider Dunzo has laid off at least 30 per cent of its workforce, nearly 300 employees, after it raised $75 million in a fresh funding round.

According to sources, Kabeer Biswas, Dunzo Founder and CEO, told employees in a town-hall meeting about the latest round of layoffs.

When reached, Dunzo did not immediately comment.

    MS Education Academy

The Economic Times was first to report about the development. In January, Dunzo had laid off 3 per cent of its workforce amid cost-cutting measures, as the company looked at team structures and network design to build efficiency into its teams.

The quick commerce platform will also shut down 50 per cent of its dark stores, and will now join supermarkets and other merchants.

E-commerce player Dunzo in January 2022 raised $240 million to expand its footprint in India.

The freshly-raised funds were to be used in enabling instant delivery of essentials from a network of micro warehouses while also expanding its ‘B2B’ business vertical to enable logistics for the local merchants.

The investment was led by Reliance Retail Ventures, with participation from existing investors Lightbox, Lightrock, 3L Capital and Alteria Capital.

Kejriwal extends support to Kapil Sibal’s new platform ‘Insaaf’

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday appealed to people, including lawyers, to join Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal’s newly launched platform ‘Insaaf’ to fight injustice.

It’s a very good initiative, he said.

Sibal, an eminent lawyer and an independent Rajya Sabha member, announced on Saturday that he was launching a new platform called ‘Insaaf’ to fight “injustice” prevailing in the country, and sought the support of chief ministers and other Opposition leaders.

“This is a very important initiative of Kapil Sibal sahib. I appeal to everyone to join this and we will fight injustice together,” Kejriwal said in a tweet in Hindi.

Later, speaking to reporters, the Delhi chief minister said Sibal is a well-known lawyer who is very active when it comes to social and political issues.

With his initiative, Sibal wants to connect people from various sections of the society, especially lawyers from across the country, he said.

It’s a very good initiative by Sibal, the AAP national convener added.

“I appeal to the lawyers and people of the country to join this initiative and make every possible effort to help aggrieved persons get justice, wherever there is injustice with anybody, Kejriwal said.

The Delhi BJP, however, reminded Kejriwal that when he was part of the India Against Corruption (IAC) movement, its members had staged a protest outside Sibal’s residence and called him a “thief”.

“During the IAC movement, a demonstration was organised outside Kapil Sibal’s house and he was called a thief, and today sahib,” Delhi BJP spokesperson Khemchand Sharma said in a tweet in response to Kejriwal’s post.

“Now neither the contractor of thieves nor the sahib of thieves will be able to save the corrupt,” the BJP leader said in Hindi.

Announcing his new platform on Saturday, Sibal alleged a government working against the citizens is at the helm.

He said he would hold a public meeting of the new platform at Jantar Mantar on March 11 and put forward a new vision of India there. He said it was an open invitation to everyone, including opposition leaders and common people, to join him at the event.

Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray also came out in support of his ‘Insaaf’ platform.

“Everyone who wants democracy to survive and thrive should stand firmly with Kapil Sibal in his new initiative,” he said in a statement on Saturday.

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav also expressed solidarity with Sibal’s “ideas” and said lawyers along with the people of India must unite to “save” the unity and integrity of the country.

“We are in solidarity with your ideas, Kapil Sibal ji. I agree lawyers have an important role and along with citizens of India they must unite to save the unity and integrity of this great country,” the RJD leader said in a tweet on Saturday.

New Delhi: Rajya Sabha leader Kapil Sibal on Saturday announced a new platform to fight “injustice” prevailing in the country under the BJP-led government, calling on everyone, including opposition chief ministers and leaders, to support him in his endeavour.

Addressing a press conference here, Sibal said he was launching the platform “Insaaf” and a website “Insaaf ke sipahi” to help people rise in the fight against injustice with lawyers at the forefront of the initiative.

He said on March 11, he will hold a meeting of the initiative at Jantar Mantar where he will put forward a vision for India.

Sibal said it was an open invitation for everyone, including opposition leaders and common people, to join him at the event.

He sought the support of opposition chief ministers and leaders for his initiative.

“This will be a national level platform where lawyers will be at the forefront. RSS shakhas have also been spreading their ideology in every locality which gives rise to injustice. We will fight that injustice also,” he said.

The senior advocate said this was a people’s platform and dismissed suggestions that he was launching any political party.
