Hyderabad: HMWSSB bags award for best sewerage treatment plants

Hyderabad: Another award bagged by Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) from an international magazine called ‘Water Digest’ for the best Sewerage Treatment Plants (STPs), 2022 to 2023.
The award was presented to Managing Director Danakishore by Jalamandali Project Director Sridhar Babu on Saturday. Babu received the award from Union Minister for Hydropower Gajendra Singh Shekhawat in Delhi on Friday.
Shekhawat termed Hyderabad as “The city that is treating 100 percent sewage water in the country”.
Expressing happiness, Danakishore said “Besides providing drinking water to everyone in the city, the Telangana government is working hard to treat the sewage generated. Chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao and municipal minister KT Rama Rao gave a lot of encouragement to these projects.”
Telangana government has sanctioned 62 STPs under Sewerage Master Plan in Hyderabad at a cost of Rs 3,866 crores for the first time in India for 100% sewage treatment, said a press releaser on Saturday.
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) area daily generates 1,650 million liters of sewage, out of which 772 million gallons of sewage is being treated scientifically through 25 STPs.
The underground water is being released into the Musi River without being polluted. Another 878 MLDs of sewage need to be treated. For this, the government has taken up the construction of 31 new STPs in the first phase in 2022.
The construction works are set to be completed in a few months and the wastewater generated in the GHMC area can be treated 100%.

Amberpet STP is known as Asia’s largest sewage treatment plant. Sewage water starts from Kukatpally Nala. It reaches Amberpet after merging with many nalas in different parts of the city. Around 339 million gallons of sewage are treated at the Amberpet STP and later discharged into the Musi River.
The water obtained by treating sewage is used to water the plants in software company premises through a method called Circular Economy. The solids left after the treatment are then used in biogas production.

India Cements to refurbish its plants in Telangana and AP at Rs.1,600 crore

Chennai: Cement major India Cements Ltd is looking at refurbishing its old plants located in Andhra Pradesh and Telungana at an outlay of Rs 1,500 crore to Rs 1,600 crore to be funded internally, said a top company official.
Suffering a production cost disadvantage of about Rs 500 per ton as compared to the best in the market and in order to be at par with competition, India Cements has decided to refurbish its plants in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana acquired two decades back, Vice Chairman and Managing Director N.Srinivasan said.
The company has engaged Krupp Polysius and FL Smidth and submit their report on making the plants efficient.
“We have asked the experts to submit their report as how to make these plants as efficient to be on par with the competition. They are expected to submit the report soon,” he said.
According to Srinivasan, the refurbishment when started will take about 15 to 18 months to complete.
Since India Cements has a basket of vintage plants and technology with varying operating parameters, this has pushed the cost of production against its peers, he said.
The company has plants in AP and Telangana and they were acquired two decades ago.
In terms of consumption of fuel (coal and oil) and power, India Cements has found it is incurring an additional cost of Rs 500 per tonne of cement produced compared to the most efficient players in the industry.

The revamp programme is aimed at addressing this cost difference and improve the operational parameters of plants.
According to Srinivasan, the refurbishment programme will start with Malkapur and Vishnupuram plants in Telangana. It will not cover its modern plants like Sankari in Tamil Nadu and Banswara in Rajasthan.
India Cements has eight integrated cement plants – two plants in Andhra Pradesh at Chilamkur and Yerraguntla, two in Telangana at Vishnpuram and Malkapur, one at Banswara in Rajasthan, threein Tamil Nadu at Sankarnagar, Sankari and Dalavoi and two grinding units one near Chennai and the other at Parli in Maharashtra.
The combined production capacity is about 16 million ton per annum.
Srinivasan also said the company will increase volume of cement and sell more blended cement.
Meanwhile, aided by Rs 294.28 crore profit on sale of investments, India Cements closed Q3 of FY23 with a net profit of Rs 90.73 crore.
India Cements closed the quarter ended December 31, 2022 with a revenue from operations of Rs 1,219.46 crore (Q3FY22 Rs 1,108.46 crore) and a net profit of Rs 90.73 crore (Rs 3.30 crore).
The exceptional income item of Rs 294.28 crore is the profit on sale of investments made in Springway Mining Private Ltd.
According to India Cements, during the quarter under review, the company concluded the sale of investment held in its subsidiary Springway Mining Private Ltd (SMPL) for an agreed consideration of Rs 476.88 crore vide share purchase agreement (SPA) on October 10, 2022.

Ukraine storing weapons at nuclear plants: Russia

Moscow: Ukrainian forces are storing Western-supplied missiles and artillery shells in nuclear power plants, Russian Foreign Intelligence Service Director Sergey Naryshkin said on Monday, reports said.
He claimed that Kiev has been using the plants as cover for ammunition stockpiles, RT reported.
“There is credible information that Ukrainian troops are stockpiling the Western-supplied weapons and ammunition on the territory of nuclear power plants,” Naryshkin said, according to a statement on the intelligence service’s website.
He added that the armaments include rockets for US-made HIMARS launchers and missiles used by foreign air defence systems, as well as “large-caliber artillery shells”.
According to Naryshkin, several cars loaded with “lethal cargo” were delivered by rail to the Rovno Nuclear Power Plant in western Ukraine during the last week of December alone. “They rely on the calculation that the Russian Armed Forces would not strike nuclear power plants because they realise the danger of a nuclear disaster,” the intelligence chief said, RT reported.
Russia has accused Ukrainian forces of shelling the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant, which is Europe’s largest. It is located in the eponymous region which, along with three other former Ukrainian territories, joined Russia following referendums in September.
Kiev denied targeting the facility and claimed that Russia was using the plant as a base and cover for its soldiers. Russian officials said that heavy weapons have never been deployed to the site, and that a select number of armed security personnel were maintaining the safety of the plant, as it is located near the frontline, RT reported.

Though artist Christophe Guinet was born in Paris and loves the urban environment, he’s always felt in touch with nature. “I’ve been passionate about plants since adolescence. I fell in love with orchids at age 15 and learned to cultivate them.
