Foxconn to produce Apple AirPods from Telangana plant: Report

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Taiwanese contract manufacturing giant Foxconn has reportedly won an order to manufacture AirPods for Apple Inc and is planning to build a factory in Telangana to produce the earphones.

A recent Reuters report said that two people with knowledge of this matter told the news agency that AirPods wireless earphones currently being produced by a range of Chinese suppliers, will also be produced by Foxconn as per the deal. This deal underlines efforts by the company to further diversify production away from China.

According to the reports the construction of the manufacturing facility is set to being by the end of 2023 with a goal to start production at the end of 2024 at the earliest.

The news agency said that a source revealed that Foxconn would invest more than $ 200 million in the new manufacturing facility in Telangana.

Foxconn chairman Young Liu, who was in Hyderabad earlier this month, has written a letter to chief minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, saying that the Taiwanese contract manufacturing giant is committed to setting up the plant in the state.

“As discussed with you during our meeting on March 2, Foxconn is committed to setting up a manufacturing facility in Kongara Kalan and I seek the support of your team in operationalising the Kongara Kalan Park as early as possible,” Liu wrote in his letter.

The state government has reportedly offered 200 acres of land to Foxconn to set up the plant at Kongara Kalan, about 35 km from Hyderabad.

Liu visited Hyderabad on March 2. He called on KCR and during the meeting a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed.

Telangana government had announced that Foxconn will set up a manufacturing facility with employment generation potential for over one lakh people.

Thiruvananthapuram:The Kerala government on Friday decided to conduct a health survey in the areas around Brahmapuram to assess the health-related problems caused by the smoke pollution emanating from the smouldering waste plant there.

Health Minister Veena George said the survey will include people who are immediately affected and also those who live in the surrounding areas.

“We have taken this decision in a high-level meeting today. Our community medicine experts will prepare a questionnaire. The district team will prioritise the places and our field staff will be trained to do the house-to-house survey, in order to analyse what is the real situation on the ground,” George told reporters here.

The minister said the health department has also earmarked a ‘smoke casualty’ in hospitals and has earmarked 100 beds in General Hospital, Ernakulam, and 20 beds in Taluk Hospital, Tripunithura for patients coming from the affected areas.

She said health staff has been working on the field from March 3 onwards. The minister said the health department is also conducting special medical camps in Kochi for those affected by the smoke pollution.

She said the whole focus of the government is now to overcome the crisis and after that the government, with the cooperation of all the departments concerned, would be implementing a scientific solution to permanently address this issue.

The fire broke out at the Kochi city corporation-run waste treatment plant on March 2 and the district administration of Ernakulam declared a holiday on March 6 for children in all schools in areas under Kochi corporation and the nearby municipalities and gram panchayats, as thick clouds of toxic smoke billowing from the site engulfed the city.

She said we sell cheese, Kalari, curd, and milk from the plant, besides we are supplying to different hotels in and around Patnitop, and the unit is easily making a sale of 3 to 4 thousand rupees a day – and is increasing day by day.

Sahahnaza recalls that the initial days were challenging when she alongside her colleagues started to work in a male-dominated society, but slowly things started working smoothly for us and the result is in front of all today.

Apple supplier Foxconn committed to set up plant in Telangana, CEO to CM

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Foxconn Chairman Young Liu, who was in Hyderabad last week, has written a letter to Telangana Chief Minister K.

Liu also invited KCR, as the Chief Minister is popularly known, to visit Taiwan as his personal guest.

The copy of the letter dated March 6 was released by the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO).

This comes amid reports that Foxconn has denied entering into any binding, definitive agreements for new India investment during its chairman’s recent trip.

“To all the naysayers: Stuff prevails,” tweeted Telangana’s director of electronics Sujai Karampuri, who posted the letter by Young Liu to the chief minister.

The Foxconn chairman thanked KCR for the hospitality extended to him and his team during their visit to Hyderabad.

“I also wish to thank you for your warm birthday wishes and a personalized card. I was indeed inspired by your vision and the efforts towards transformation and development of Telangana. I now have a new friend in India and I look forward to working with you in future,” he said.

Liu had visited Hyderabad on March 2. He called on KCR and during the meeting a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed.

The Telangana government had announced that Foxconn will set up a manufacturing facility with employment generation potential for over one lakh people.

The historic deal has potential to generate employment to over one lakh people over a period of 10 years, the CMO had said.

“Foxconn’s unit will help in generating large scale employment to youth and will help in attracting more such industries to the State,” KCR had said.

He said that Telangana considers Taiwan as a natural partner and that the state is glad to be a part of Foxconn’s growth story.

KCR assured Liu that the state government will provide all kinds of support to Foxconn for its operations in the state.

The CMO had quoted Foxconn chairman as saying that his organization has studied extensively about the state of Telangana. He praised the friendly industrial development ecosystem created in the state.

Liu expressed happiness over the progress achieved by the state in the industrial sector, especially in IT and related electronics sectors, in just eight years.

The chairman said that he is optimistic about the investments of his company in Telangana.

  • Kochi: Fire from Brahmapuram waste plant under control, thick smoke continues to persist

Kochi: Fire from Brahmapuram waste plant under control, thick smoke continues to persist

    [ad_1]

Kochi: Giant plumes of toxic smoke continued to rise from the Brahmapuram waste plant here on Sunday evening as hundreds of firefighters, including Naval personnel, battled to bring the blaze that has gone on for four days under control.

A senior police officer said that the fire appeared to be extinguished, but huge amounts of smoke was still rising from the site and therefore, it may not have been quelled completely.

Aerial visuals of the site aired on various channels showed huge and thick plumes of smoke billowing from the site which appeared to be completely ravaged by the fire.

Meanwhile, the district administration declared Monday as a holiday for Anganwadis, kindergartens, day care centres and children of classes 1 to 7 of government, aided, unaided, CBSE and ICSE schools located in Kochi city and neighbouring gram panchayats and municipalities.

Earlier in the day, Kerala Industries Minister P Rajeeve said that the fire was under control and would hopefully be extinguished by evening.

He and State Health Minister Veena George said that the smoke due to the blaze was not a matter of concern.

Their announcements came while speaking to reporters after a high-level meeting at the Ernakulam District Collectorate here.

They said that people need not stay indoors as recommended on Saturday and can move out by taking precautions, like wearing N95 masks.

However, those with breathing problems, like asthma, the elderly, children and pregnant women should try and avoid getting exposed to the smoke and should wear masks if going out, the Ministers said.

George also said hospital records of the city do not indicate any medical cases due to the smoke.

Nevertheless, arrangements, like dedicated beds for those affected by the smoke generated due to the fire, have been made in all government hospitals and medical colleges in the city.

Besides, two oxygen parlours and a round the clock medical team of doctors have been put in place in Brahmapuram.

Regarding the decisions taken in the meeting, Rajeeve said that all stakeholders were of the view that there needs to be a coordinated effort to deal with such situations.

In lieu of that, it was decided to put in place a system comprising a coordination committee of representatives from the Kochi Corporation, fire services, police, health services, electricity board and fire safety officials of Bharat Petroleum and CIAL.

Also, it was decided in the meeting that a panel comprising officials of the corporation and the panchayat, where the waste plant is set up, and including the District Collector and the local MLA will meet every three months to discuss problems in that area.

After the prevailing issue is resolved, the corporation will also take urgent steps to ensure proper road connectivity to the area — another decision taken in the meeting according to Rajeeve.

The Minister further said as a result of the more than 3-day long fire, waste collection in Kochi has come to a standstill and therefore, in the meeting it was resolved that the corporation and the District Collector would take steps to put in place a temporary arrangement for removing garbage from the city.

The issue of bio-mining, which has not been taking place at the waste plant for some time, will be tackled by Local Self Government Minister M B Rajesh.

Earlier in the day, a fire officer engaged in the fire-fighting at the waste plant said it was taking time to quell the flames as there were layers of plastic underneath which got heated up and prevented the fire at the top from cooling down.

Lack of rains and wind also played spoilsport against the fire-fighting efforts and there was a second instance of a fire breaking out during the operations.

He said the fire tenders have been mobilised from divisions of other districts like Kottayam and Alappuzha.

In addition to all these, the phosgene gas generated by the fire is leading to nausea, dizziness among the firefighters which also affected operations.

According to police, 25 fire-fighting units, which included tenders from Thrissur, Kottayam and Idukki districts as well as those of the Indian Navy and Bharat Petroleum, battled the blaze since morning.

Air quality in parts of this port city was found to be poor this morning due to the fire.

According to the data on the Kerala Pollution Control Board website, the PM 2.5 and PM 10 particulates’ level in the air in Kochi were way above the prescribed standards.

The level of PM 2.5, tiny particulate matter less than 2.5 microns in diameter that can enter deep into the lungs and even the bloodstream, was found to be 279.58 ug/m3, at around 8.30 AM today, as against the normal standard of 60.

PM 10, particles with diameter less than 10 micrometres, level were recorded at 324.65 as against a normal of 100.

The fire broke out in the waste dumped at the plant on Thursday.

Officials had maintained that such incidents happen every year around this time due to the extreme heat.

  • Reliance to set up 10 GW solar plant, invest Rs 40K crore for 5G rollout in AP: Ambani

Reliance to set up 10 GW solar plant, invest Rs 40K crore for 5G rollout in AP: Ambani

    [ad_1]

Visakhapatnam: Billionaire Mukesh Ambani on Friday announced plans for setting up a 10-gigawatt solar plant in Andhra Pradesh as his oil-to-telecom conglomerate bets big on renewable sources which can be converted into carbon-free green hydrogen.

Speaking at the Andhra Pradesh Global Investors Summit, Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries Ltd, said his group is investing Rs 40,000 crore for rollout of ultra-high speed 5G telephony network in the state.

“This morning, I am happy to announce that we will continue our investments and we will invest in 10 gigawatt of renewable solar energy in the state of Andhra Pradesh,” he said without giving investment details.

Reliance had in 2021 announced plans to create by 2030 capacity to generate at least 100 GW of electricity from renewable sources, which can be converted into carbon-free green hydrogen. It is also investing in setting up giga-factories to manufacture components for the green energy value chain.

Ambani said his company has invested more than Rs 1.5 lakh crore in developing oil and gas discoveries it made off the Andhra coast and in supporting gas pipeline infrastructure to transport the fuel to consumers.

Gas from Reliance’s KG-D6 block in the Bay of Bengal contributes nearly 30 percent of of all gas production in the country, he said. “This is just an example of how important Andhra is to the India story. And how deeply Reliance is invested in the Andhra story.”

Reliance Jio, the group’s telecom arm, is rolling out what it called a ‘True 5G’ network.

“We are creating the largest and the best digital network footprint in the state by investing over Rs 40,000 crore. Our 4G network covers 98 per cent of Andhra Pradesh’s population, including those living in the remotest corners of the state.

“The rollout of Jio’s True 5G will be completed before the end of 2023 throughout India, including your state of Andhra Pradesh,” he said.

5G will trigger a new wave of digital revolution, creating large-scale business and employment opportunities.

Similarly, its retail arm has partnered with more than 1.2 lakh kirana merchants across 6,000 villages of Andhra Pradesh. “Reliance Retail will source significantly more agri and agro-based products and manufactured goods from Andhra Pradesh for sale all over India,” he said.

“I would like to assure you that Reliance will continue to be an unflinching partner to the people and the Government of Andhra Pradesh in your state’s all-around accelerated progress,” he added.

After massive fire mishap, Apple Inc supplier declares 30-day holiday at AP plant

    [ad_1]

Jinkalamitta: Production at the factory of Taiwan-based Foxlink, the cable supplier to technology giant Apple Inc, is likely to be hit as the company has declared a 30-day holiday for its employees, following the fire accident here.

The company has declared a holiday for a month to around 1,600 workers of the Jinkalamitta plant in Tirupati district, and directed them to return to their respective hometowns, an official said on Tuesday.

The accident occurred on Monday. However, there was no loss of life, police said.

“They (Management) declared holidays for employees for 30 days,” said Renigunta deputy superintendent of police (DSP) A. Ramachandra, who is monitoring the situation at the plant.

Examining the mishap, he indicated that 30 days may not be enough.

The contract manufacturer is yet to lodge any complaint, even as officials from the state factories and labour departments, along with insurance company representatives have started visiting the plant to estimate the quantum of loss.

Meanwhile, Foxlink is yet to lodge a complaint with the authorities over the blaze that completely destroyed the main manufacturing plant, one of the three sheds.

“It takes time to estimate the loss as bills are verified and cross checked to arrive at a figure. It will take time to go through this exercise, it may take 10 15 days,” he observed, explaining why it may take longer to file the FIR.

He also hinted that 30 days of holidays may not be enough, considering the total damage and collapse of the shed and noted that it may even need up to four months.

Foxlink and the owner of the site housing the facility could not be reached for a comment.

Established in 1986, Foxlink designs, makes and sells cable assemblies, connectors, power management devices and battery packs to several global tech behemoths.

It is headquartered in Taipei with over 15 design, manufacturing and sales sites across the world.

  • North India’s first nuclear plant to come up in Haryana

North India’s first nuclear plant to come up in Haryana

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: North India’s first nuclear plant is coming up at Gorakhpur in Haryana’s Fatehabad district, which is about 150 km north of the national capital.

Disclosing this on Saturday, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Jitendra Singh, said that during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s regime, one of the major achievements would be the installation of nuclear or atomic energy plants in other parts of the country, which were earlier confined mostly to the southern states like Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh or in the west in Maharashtra.

The Gorakhpur Haryana Anu Vidyut Pariyojana’s (GHAVP) two units of 700 MW capacity each are under implementation near the Gorakhpur village. Till date, an amount of Rs 4,906 crore has been spent out of the total allocated funds of Rs 20,594 crore for the project.

Construction of the main plant buildings/structures viz. fire water pump house (FWPH), safety related pump house (SRPH), fuel oil storage area, ventilation stack, overhead tank, switchyard control building, retaining walls and garland drain is progressing well.

Ground improvement in Turbine Building 1 and 2, 220 kV Switchyard and IDCT-1A is completed. Ground improvement in other areas are in progress. The contractors for the IDCT package and turbine island package have mobilised the site.

Purchase orders for major long manufacturing cycle equipment and components like primary coolant pumps, calandria, reactor headers, refuelling machines heads, moderator and other D20 heat exchangers etc. are already in place.

Construction of water duct from Tohana to GHAVP for meeting operational cooling water requirements has been taken up through the Haryana Irrigation & Water Resources Department (HI&WRD) as deposit work and is progressing well.

Singh said that keeping in line with the priority to increase India’s nuclear capacity, a number of path breaking decisions were taken in last over eight years.

He added that a bulk approval of installation of 10 nuclear reactors has been given a nod by the government.

The minister said that the Department of Atomic Energy has also been given permission for forming joint ventures with PSUs for opening atomic energy plants, which is an upcoming and promising sector, having potential to fulfil India’s energy needs in times to come.
