    Srinagar, March 20: Rains lashed most of plains in Jammu and Kashmir including Srinagar while Gulmarg received sleet in the last 24 hours, the weather department said on Monday.

    A meteorological department official here told GNS in last 24 hours till 0830 hours today, Gulmarg received 15.8mm of sleet while Srinagar had 2.0mm of rain, Qazigund 7.4mm, Pahalgam 14.5mm, Kupwara 4.5mm, Kokernag 14.4mm, Jammu 0.0mm, Banihal 27mm, Batote 21mm and Bhaderwah 8mm.

    Regarding the forecast, he said, generally cloudy weather with possibility of rain was expected in the next 24 hours.

    On March 21, he said, “a brief spell of thunderstorm with rain was likely at isolated (50-60% chance) towards evening.”

    From March 22-23, he said, dry weather was expected while weather was likely to be generally cloudy with intermittent light rain with thunder at scattered places on March 24- 25. Thereafter, he said, the weather was expected to be dry with “no forecast of any major rain/snow till March 28 in J&K.”

    Regarding temperature, he said, Srinagar recorded a low of 7.2°C against 5.5°C on the previous night and it was 2.5°C above normal for the summer capital.

    Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of 6.0°C against 3.5°C on the previous night and it was 2.4°C above normal for the gateway town of Kashmir.

    Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of 2.6°C against 1.2°C on the previous night and it was 2.5°C above normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

    Kokernag recorded a low of 4.6°C against 4.0°C on the previous night and it was 1.1°C above normal for the place, the officials said.

    Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 0.6°C against minus 0.4°C on the previous night and it was 1.7°C above normal for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he said.

    In Kupwara town, he said, the mercury settled at 3.2°C against 4.5°C on the previous night and it was 0.1°C above normal for the north Kashmir area.

    Jammu recorded a low of 14.7°C against 14.2°C on the previous night. It was 0.2°C below normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.

    Banihal, he said, recorded a low of 6.2°C (above normal by 1.3°C), Batote 6.9°C (above normal by 0.2°C), Katra 14.1°C (1.5°C above normal) and Bhadarwah 7.0°C (3.1°C above normal).

    Ladakh’s Leh and Kargil, he said, recorded a low of minus 1.5°C and minus 4.2°C respectively. (GNS)

    SRINAGAR: Weather department on Friday forecast rain and thunderstorm at scattered places in plains and snowfall over upper reaches of JK in next 24 hours.

    “Intermittent rain and thunderstorm accompanied by gusty winds at scattered places is expected whereas snowfall is likely over higher reaches from March 18-20,” a meteorological department official said, adding, “there is no forecast of any heavy rain and snow during the time.”

    He said farmers are again urged to postpone spraying of orchards during the period.

    Regarding temperature, he said, Srinagar recorded a low of 6.6°C against 5.5°C on the previous night and it was 1.9°C above normal for the summer capital.

    Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of 4.5°C against 4.2°C on the previous night and it was 0.9°C above normal for the gateway town of Kashmir.

    Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of 1.6°C against 0.8°C on the previous night and it was 1.5°C above normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

    Kokernag recorded a low of 4.6°C against 6.3°C on the previous night and it was 1.1°C above normal for the place, the officials said.

    Gulmarg recorded a low of 0.5°C against 1.5°C on the previous night and it was 2.8°C above normal for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he said.

    In Kupwara town, he said, the mercury settled at 4.3°C against 3.2°C on the previous night and it was 1.2°C above normal for the north Kashmir area.

    Jammu recorded a low of 14.3°C against 15.0°C on the previous night. It was 0.6°C below normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.

    Banihal, he said, recorded a low of 6.2°C (above normal by 1.3°C), Batote 7.3°C (above normal by 0.6°C), Katra 12.5°C (0.1°C below normal) and Bhadarwah 4.6°C (0.7°C above normal).

    Ladakh’s Leh and Drass, he said, recorded a low of minus 3.2°C and minus 3.6°C respectively. (GNS)

    SRINAGAR: Parts of Kashmir Valley including Gulmarg received fresh snowfall while rains lashed plains in the last 24 hours. The weather has improved and is likely to stay mainly dry for next 24 hours even though there are chances of scattered rains and snow at isolated places.

    Quoting a meteorological department official news agency GNS reported that Srinagar received 0.8mm of rain during the 24 hours till 0830 hours today, Qazigund 27.6mm, Kokernag 22.2mm while Pahalgam had 7.4cms of snow, Kupwara 32cm( over 1-ft) and Gulmarg 33 cms(over 1.1-ft). Rains also lashed Jammu region with Jammu city receiving 1.1mm, Banihal 49.1mm, Batote 27.3mm, Katra 3.1mm, Bhaderwah 31.4mm during the time, he said.

    Meanwhile, he said, Srinagar recorded a low of 0.7°C against 0.4°C on the previous night. Today’s minimum temperature, he said, was above normal by 0.5°C for the summer capital.

    Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of 1.8°C against minus 0.8°C on the previous night and it was 2.0°C above normal for the gateway town of Kashmir.

    Jammu recorded a low of 12.8°C against 9.9°C on the previous night. It was 2.7°C above normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.

    Banihal, he said, recorded a low of 2.0°C (above normal by 0.8°C), Batote 2.2°C (below normal by 0.4°C), Katra 10.6°C (2.5°C above normal) and Bhadarwah 2.1°C (1.9°C above normal).

    Ladakh’s Leh and Kargil recorded a low of minus 8.0°C and minus 9.2°C respectively, the official said.

    While Chillai-Kalan, the 40-day long harsh winter period that started on December 21 has ended, Kashmir is under the grip of a 20-day-long period called ‘Chillai-Khurd’. It will be followed by a 10-day-long period ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold) which is from February 20 to March 1.
