  • Ukraine gears up for new phase of cyber war with Russia

Ukraine gears up for new phase of cyber war with Russia

    [ad_1]

    russia ukraine war 03844

“We’re just sort of bracing for what comes next and hoping that we can help,” Roncone said.

A renewed cyber offensive could also expand the war into regions of Ukraine that Russia has been unable to take with physical force, deepening the conflict even as Kyiv bolsters its armies with new weaponry from NATO allies. Major attacks could even spill over into NATO allies.

Ukraine has done better than expected so far. While the Russian government and cyber criminal groups repeatedly attacked Ukraine through everything from government agencies to television stations to energy substations in 2022, Ukraine thwarted many of those and was able to recover from others quickly.

“They were better prepared, more resilient, more prepared to get networks that were successfully attacked back up and running quickly,” said Tom Burt, Microsoft’s corporate vice president of customer security and trust.

And fears that Russia would take down Ukraine’s energy grid or shut down military communications didn’t come to pass.

But Russia has now had months to prepare, learn and reconsider its strategy.

In February of 2022, Russian cyber forces didn’t have a lot of time to carry out sophisticated attacks, said Mark Montgomery, senior fellow on Cyber and Technology Innovation at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies.

“Russian forces had the same level of warning about the invasion that those outside Putin’s inner circle had,” he said. “They had no time to plan — and they thought the war would be over soon anyway.”

In the ensuing months, Russian hackers resorted to attacks that were less sophisticated and easier to launch, such as crude data-destroying “wiper” attacks and distributed denial-of-service attacks, which overwhelm servers until they temporarily crash, said Ciaran Martin, former CEO of the U.K.’s National Cyber Security Centre and current Paladin Capital Group managing director. Martin described the attacks as “improvised, fast paced … quite harassing attacks on the Ukrainian infrastructure.”

Russia’s struggles throughout the year may have resulted from a failure to properly staff or train its cyber forces, said Jon Bateman, a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

But as the war continues, Russia has time to adapt, Bateman said.

Russia could compensate for those shortcomings with “short bursts of intense [cyber] fires.” Timed right and properly coordinated with kinetic attacks — an admittedly tall order, qualified Bateman — “cyber operations could be really consequential.”

With added time Russia could also be planning more sophisticated attacks.

“I’d love to say we’re completely out of the woods, but I still have memories of the NotPetya attack years ago, and it’s not like they’ve stopped,” Senate Intelligence Committee Chair Mark Warner (D-Va.) said in an interview. He was referring to a 2017 Russian attack that used sophisticated malware to tunnel into Ukrainian networks across multiple industries and government agencies and caused an estimated $10 billion in damages worldwide.

And as Russia gets further backed into a corner, it may be less concerned in 2023 that a cyberattack would end up affecting countries outside Ukraine and prompt them to provide more military support to Kyiv.

Russia learned in 2017 that an attack targeted at Ukraine could spill into other countries, when the NotPetya hack spread to computer systems worldwide. That experience might have encouraged Russia to tightly control its digital offensive in the first year of the warr, said Christopher Ahlberg, CEO of Recorded Future.

“Why would he want to get NATO involved, if he’s invading a specific country?” Ahlberg said.

Now NATO is committing itself further in Ukraine. In recent weeks, alliance members have agreed to send main battle tanks to Kyiv — a threshold that seemed unthinkable at the war’s outset — and they are now weighing sending advanced fighter aircraft. And on Friday, the one year anniversary of the war, the U.S. announced an additional $2 billion tranche of long-term security assistance to Ukraine that will include ammunition and high-tech drones.

That said, Ukraine’s cyber defenses have held strong against an onslaught from Russia that is much bigger than many realized. Dutch intelligence disclosed this week that there have been many more Russian cyberattacks against NATO and Ukraine than have been made public — and that Ukraine has largely fended those off.

Still, officials in both the U.S. and Ukraine warn that success so far at blocking attacks shouldn’t be seen as evidence the threat is handled.

“We should not take our shields down,” Jen Easterly, director of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, told reporters this month. “It is very unpredictable what is going on in that space.”

“We can say one thing for sure, for certain, that we won’t have fewer attacks this year,” Yurii Shchyhol, Ukraine’s top cybersecurity official, told POLITICO in January.

A year into the war, many officials have far more confidence in Kyiv’s ability to blunt Russian cyber attacks than they did before Russia invaded.

But knowing how much work went into securing Ukrainian networks, Microsoft’s Burt said cyberattacks — Russian or otherwise — could have a game-changing impact in future conflicts.

“Over history, when you’ve seen a new form of weapon deployed in a conflict, what you tend to see is that in the next major conflict that form of weaponry has been significantly evolved and advanced and has become more destructive,” he said.

Ranbir Kapoor mocks BBC journalist over Bollywood’s ‘bad phase’ remark

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor who was last seen in Brahmastra: Part One – Shiva has started promoting his upcoming movie ‘Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar’ (TJMM). The actor who is known for romantic and comedy roles will be back in his original avatar after Sanju, Shamshera and Brahmastra. Ranbir enjoys a unique fan following and the trailer of his TJMM seemed like the actor is back with what he is best at. The actor who usually remains out of controversies and keeps himself away from social media is hitting the headlines now.

During one of his promotional event recently, the Saawariya actor gave a witty reply to a journalist who asked him about the bad phase of Bollywood at the box office.

In a video which surfaced online, the journalist asked the actor, “Ranbir Bollywood ka abhi thora dicey chal raha hai…(Bollywood is currently in a dicey phase).” Interrupting her, Ranbir answered, “Kya baat kar rahi hai? Pathaan ki collection dekhi nahi tune? (What are you saying? Have you not seen the box office collection of Pathaan?)”

Ranbir further asked reporter, “Pehle, aap kaunsi publication se ho (Which media publication you are from?)” After she replied, the actor mockingly told her, ”BBC News”. He the went asking her, ”Abhi toh aapke bhi kuch chal raha hai na aaj kal…uska kya? Pehle woh jawab do (I think something is going on with your company these days. What about that, you tell me first).”

RK’s words left everyone in the room in splits and even some fans praised him for witty replies like Shah Rukh Khan. One of the users commented, “Bhai savage.” Someone else also said, “Epic especially the last one when he questioned the reporter.”

”kahan puch rhe hain yeh question..wo banda 450cr ki Brahmastra dekr baitha hai,” commented another user.

The London-based news organisation BBC which is popular worldwide for its unbiased reporting came under scanner earlier this month after the Income Tax Department of India conducted a survey operation at their offices in Delhi and Mumbai as part of an investigation into alleged tax evasion.

Relevant to mention here that BBC has released a documentary on PM Modi earlier and it was opposed by the BJP.

Talking about Ranbir Kapoor, his movie Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar will be released on March 8 this year. Directed by Luv Ranjan, the film has Shraddha Kapoor as the female lead alongside Dimple Kapadia, Boney Kapoor, Anubhav Singh Bassi and Rajesh Jais in key roles.

Telangana: SNDP phase 2 under consideration; phase 1 to end by monsoon

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana IT minister KT Rama Rao stated that all nala works under the Strategic Nala Development Program (SNDP) will be completed by Monsoon, this year.

His statement comes in response to a question posed by the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) Karwan MLA Kausar Mohiuddin, in the Assembly session over the delay in the completion of pending projects. He requested new nalas under another phase of the project owing to flood-like situations during monsoons in the state.

Kausar stated that the projects are progressing in a very slow manner and asked KTR to consider adding more affected areas under a second phase of the ongoing projects.

“During the extreme rainfalls in 2020, great damage has been done to Hyderabad. Through the Strategic Nala Development Programme (SNDP) many proposals were made for relief projects in Nampally and Chandrayanagutta. Many crores of rupees have been sanctioned and some projects are under construction,” stated Kausar.

“Many bigger projects are progressing in a slow manner. The MAUD minister has put forth an SNDP proposal on the Musi River. The projects in this proposal include the Afzal Sagar Naala, Mehdipatnam Naala, and Balkapur Nala which are progressing very slowly,” he added.

“There is a necessity to include many other areas through a second phase of the SNDP project,” said the AIMIM MLA.

The Karwan MLA said that nalas that cover the constituency must be added to the proposal since the water overflows from Lotus Pond in Banjara Hills through Hakeepment in Karwan to Tolichowki. “There are about three to four areas that need to be considered and added to a phase 2 SNDP proposal,” said Kausar.

Addressing the slow progress of Balkapur Nala works, KTR stated that the amount has been sanctioned and the project will soon begin in the military area. “Rs 9.70 crores has been sanctioned for this project and we have called tenders thrice in this regard,” he said.

“There is no Strategic Nala Development Programme (SNDP) in any other city in India, SNDP is exclusive to Hyderabad,” stating that plans are underway for phase 2. “As funds are allocated we will proceed further,” he added stressing the BRS’ commitment to making Hyderabad free of flooding during rainfall.

Rs 7,000 cr proposed budgetary allocation for eCourts project phase 3 to enhance judicial efficiency: CJI

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The proposed allocation of Rs 7,000 crore in the 2023-24 budget for phase three of the eCourts Project will enhance judicial institutions and efficiency while ensuring courts reach every citizen, Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud said Saturday.

Addressing the 73rd anniversary of the establishment of the Supreme Court, he said that during the COVID-19 pandemic period, the top court adopted video conferencing of court proceedings to reach out to the people.

“In the recent budget, the Government of India has introduced a provision of Rs 7,000 crore for phase-3 of the e-courts project. This will help enhance the accessibility of judicial institutions and the efficiency of judicial systems in India. Such endeavor will ensure the court reaches every citizen of India,” Justice Chandrachud said.

Between March 23, 2020, and October 30, 2022, the apex court heard 3.37 lakh cases through video conferencing, he said.

“We updated our video conferencing infrastructure at meta scale. We are continuing to use technological infrastructure for a hybrid mode of hearing that allows parties from any part of the country to join the court proceedings,” CJI Chandrachud said.

The 73rd anniversary event was graced by Chief Justice of Singapore Justice Sundaresh Menon, who spoke on the topic ‘Role of judiciary in a changing world’.

The Supreme Court came into existence on 28 January 1950, two days after India became a republic on 26 January.

Hyderabad: Rs 600 crore from Union Budget given for MMTS phase II works

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Rs 600 crores were allocated from the Union Budget, under its railway budget share to expedite works for the MMTS phase II project.

The cost of this phase project has been revised to over Rs 1,100 crore. In the budget, Rs 600 crore was allotted for the MMTS phase II project, which was sanctioned in 2012-13, with an estimated cost of Rs 817 crore.

The work on this project had been delayed due to the non-availability of funds with the state government releasing Rs 279 crore, as its share of the total cost, and another Rs 417 crore is reportedly still pending.

However, the works that have already been completed include those on the Ramachandrapuram stretch, 14 km between Medchal and Bolarum, Moula Ali-Ghatkesar quadrupling (12.2 km), Falaknuma-Umdanagar doubling (13.5 km).

Works are currently underway in two more sections that include Sanath Nagar to Moula Ali doubling with electrification, and Moula Ali – Malkajgiri – Sitafalmandi doubling with electrification.

Railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said, “We have allocated more funds to expedite this project.”

Doubling and electrification have been completed in MMTS services on the Secunderabad-Medchal section, which was kept pending for a long time.
