Contempt petition: Cal HC asks SSC chief to be personally present on March 24

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Friday directed the chairman of the West Bengal School Service Commission to be personally present before it on March 24 in connection with contempt petitions moved by candidates alleging they were not awarded marks for out of syllabus questions in the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) of 2011 as ordered earlier.

The court held that an affidavit of compliance filed before it by the chairman of SSC is not acceptable.

Directing the SSC chairman to appear before the court personally on March 24, Justice Rajasekhar Mantha observed that it is apparent that marks for questions out of the syllabus have not been awarded to any of the petitioners.

The marks in question are for the TET qualification, which is the first stage of the state level selection test (SLST) of 2011, the court said.

After qualifying with the minimum number of marks stipulated by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), a candidate qualifies for the other stages, which are the personality test and interview.

Justice Mantha directed that the pendency of the contempt proceeding will not prevent the SSC from awarding the marks to the petitioners as was directed in an order of June 29, 2022.

He directed that a fresh compliance report be furnished by the chairman of the SSC on March 24, when the matter will be heard again.

The five contempt petitions, involving 83 candidates, were filed alleging that the order of June 29 was not given effect by the SSC.

“To see what is reported, that five African American officers are involved in this, just really hurt me personally,” Adams said in response to a question from POLITICO. “It was always my belief that diversifying our departments with different ethnic groups would allow us to have the level of policing we all deserve.”

Adams spent more than two decades in the New York Police Department and was the co-founder of 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement Who Care, an advocacy group that speaks out against police brutality and racial profiling. The mayor has spoken openly about being arrested as a teenager and beaten by police.

“What it appears is that these officers tarnished much of the work that many of us attempted to accomplish,” Adams said.

Hochul urged New Yorkers to remain peaceful if they choose to assemble after the video is made public.

“I will ask everyone to heed the words of Tyre Nichols’ mother on behalf of her family and his 4-year-old child — if you’re going to protest, please do so peacefully in her son’s name,” Hochul said.

  • Biden ‘personally’ understands impact of layoffs on family: White House

Biden ‘personally’ understands impact of layoffs on family: White House

    [ad_1]

New York: With massive tech layoffs hitting Indians in the US, the White House has said that President Joe Biden “personally” understands how losing a job impacts a family.

In the last several weeks, major IT behemoths like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon have fired thousands of tech professionals, a significant number of whom are either Indian-Americans or Indian IT professionals.

Most of these professionals, who are on H-1B visa, have to leave the country in 60 days if they are unable to find another alternative to sustain.

“President understands firsthand how the impact of losing a job can have on a family. He understands that very personally. But I’m just not going to get into individual specifics,” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters on Tuesday.

More than 65,000 employees have been sacked by 166 tech companies to date, and according to economists, deeper layoffs are coming in 2023.

While Google announced to lay off 12,000 employees, Amazon earlier announced to lay off 18,000 employees globally, including nearly 1,000 in India.

The companies say they are firing people as recession is on the horizon.

“Again, I’m just not going to get into specifics on why this is happening. This is something for individual companies to speak to,” Jean-Pierre said.

She said that with the US economy continuing to grow in a steady and stable manner, Biden is “going to do everything that he can to make sure this is an economy that works for everyone, that works from the bottom up and middle out. And that’s what you’ve seen from his economic plans”.

Indians scrambling for new jobs have asked elected representatives in Congress for the visa grace period to be extended beyond 60 days.
