Prayagraj: Gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad, who is currently in police custody in connection with the Umesh Pal murder case, has sought permission from a magistrate to attend the funeral of his son Asad who was killed in a police encounter.

Ahmed’s lawyer Manish Khanna told PTI that since Friday was a holiday on account of Ambedkar Jayanti, the request has been sent to the remand magistrate. The application will be presented in the court of chief judicial magistrate on Saturday, he said.

Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf were interrogated by the police at Dhoomanganj police station on Friday. The duo were taken for a routine medical examination later in the evening.

Asad and his accomplice Ghulam, both wanted in the Umesh Pal murder case, were shot dead in an exchange of fire with the Uttar Pradesh Police near Jhansi on Thursday.

The alleged encounter took place apparently at the time Ahmad was in a Prayagraj court, where he was presented before the chief judicial magistrate in connection with the same murder and remanded to 14-day judicial custody. The court also allowed a five-day remand for the UP Police to question him.

The relatives of Ahmed and Ghulam reached Jhansi on Friday evening to collect the bodies. The bodies will be brought by road and are expected to reach Prayagraj on Saturday.

On Friday evening, a large number of people gathered in Atiq Ahmed’s locality Kasari Masari following rumours that Asad’s body was being brought to Prayagraj. However, since the body has not been handed over to the relatives till late Friday evening, it is expected that the last rites would be performed on Saturday.

A police official said additional force would be deployed during Asad’s last rites so that no untoward incident takes place.

  • Calcutta HC denies permission to terminate minor girl’s 28-week pregnancy

Calcutta HC denies permission to terminate minor girl’s 28-week pregnancy

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court has denied permission to terminate the 28-week pregnancy of a 12-year-old minor girl who conceived after being raped.

The mother of the rape victim made an appeal at the Calcutta High Court seeking permission to terminate her daughter’s 28- week pregnancy.

The judgement on the matter, announced on Wednesday, was made available on Friday.

    MS Education Academy

The termination of pregnancy, which is more than 24 weeks, can be done only after getting permission from any court.

However, the report of the medical board argued against the termination, claiming it might prove fatal for the minor victim.

Justice Aniruddha Roy of the Calcutta High Court accepted the argument of the medical board and denied permission for the termination of pregnancy.

The medical board constituted for the matter submitted its report to the court on April 5.

The medical board had submitted that rather than termination, giving birth to the child would be safer for the victim.

Justice Roy also observed that the prime consideration for the court is the safety aspect of the minor girl.

He also observed that it is the responsibility of the state to protect the dignity of the minor mother and her child in such cases. “The state cannot deny its responsibilities on this count,” Justice Roy observed.

Deliberate entry of Ram Navami processions in minority areas without permission: Mamata

    [ad_1]

Khejuri: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday alleged that the BJP was deliberately taking out rallies in minority areas of the state without permission.

Banerjee’s comments come a day after clashes broke out between two groups during a Ram Navami procession in Rishra and Serampore in Hooghly district.

“Why will there be Ram Navami processions for five days? You can organise several such rallies on the day it is celebrated. We will have no objection… But, do not carry arms with you,” Banerjee said at a public distribution program here at Thakurnagar Ground.

    MS Education Academy

“They (BJP) are deliberately entering minority areas with such processions without permission. Yesterday in Rishra, too, they took out rallies in which people were seen with arms,” she claimed.

Violence during Ram Navami celebrations also rocked parts of the Howrah district on Thursday and Friday, leading to the arrest of 45 people.

Delhi police refuse permission to Congres for observing ‘satyagraha’

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Delhi Police has denied permission to the Congress for holding ‘satyagraha’ at Rajghat to protest against Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification from the Lok Sabha, officials said on Sunday.

In a letter, the Delhi Police said the request was rejected due to law and order and traffic reasons and prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC imposed in and around Rajghat.

A senior police officer told PTI that while permission for holding the satyagraha has been denied, adequate security arrangements have been put in place.

The Congress has announced plans to hold a day-long satyagraha in front of Gandhi statues at all states and district headquarters on Sunday to protest against Gandhi’s disqualification.

Gandhi was disqualified from the Lok Sabha on Friday, a day after a court in Gujarat’s Surat convicted him in a 2019 defamation case. The disqualification will bar Gandhi (52), a four-time MP, from contesting polls for eight years unless a higher court stays his conviction.

  • Activist Harsh Mander denied permission to speak at TISS Mumbai

Activist Harsh Mander denied permission to speak at TISS Mumbai

    [ad_1]

Human rights activist and author Harsh Mander was reportedly refused permission to speak on Bhagat Singh’s martyrdom day at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) in Mumbai.

The postponement of Mander’s event at TISS comes a day after the Ministry of Home Affairs’ request for a CBI investigation into Aman Biradari, an organisation founded by Mander, for suspected violations of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act.

The event organisers, Progressive Students’ Forum, claimed that the TISS administration placed unjustified limitations on the Bhagat Singh Memorial Lecture (BSML) just one day before the event.

“BSML is an event held in the campus premises annually for the remembrance of revolutionary figure Bhagat Singh to offer alternative perspectives to the Sangh appropriation of the legendary freedom fighter. It involves cultural events and an address by guest lecturers. For the fifth edition, renowned social activist and ex IAS officer Harsh Mander who has spearheaded campaigns such as Karwan-e – Mohabbat and Right to food and Aishe Ghosh, President of the JNU student’s union and political activist who came into prominence during the anti-CAA protest were set to join the gathering,” read the statement by PSF.

Students protested in front of the Director’s Bungalow on March 21st and 22nd in response to the cancellation. Following the demonstration, the administration granted permission to the left student body but rejected permission to outside guest lecturers or specialists.

Delhi University professor and writer Apoorvanand called the incident, ‘Indian democracy is at work’.

“Indian democracy at work: Harsh Mander told that he was not welcome in TISS, Bombay to give his talk to mark the martyrdom day of Bhagat Singh. Before that NLU, Lucknow canceled his talk. CBI, ED, NCPCR have already initiated action against him,” he tweeted.

Mander’s talk was also recently cancelled by Dr. Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University in Lucknow.

  • Bihar: Muslim govt staffers granted permission to leave early during Ramzan

Bihar: Muslim govt staffers granted permission to leave early during Ramzan

    [ad_1]

Patna: The Bihar government granted permission to Muslim employees and officials to come to office one hour before the scheduled time and leave office one hour before the scheduled time during the month of Ramzan, said State General Administration Department on Friday.

The General Administration Department of the state government on Friday issued a circular in this regard.

“Keeping in view the convenience of Muslim employees and officials, the government has granted permission to come to the office one hour before the scheduled time and leave the office one hour before the scheduled time during the month of Ramzan,” the official circular released by the General Administration Department stated.

According to Islamic beliefs, Ramzan is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting to commemorate the first revelation of the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad.

Ramzan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, which involves rigorous fasting for about 30 days.

During this month, Muslims do not consume food or water from dawn to dusk. They eat Sehri (a pre-dawn meal) and break their day-long fast with ‘Iftar’ in the evening.

Eid ul-Fitr is celebrated on the first day of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic lunar calendar.

The festival is celebrated by sharing a delightful dish Seviyan (Vermicelli) that comes under different varieties like ‘Hath Ka Seviyan’, ‘Nammak Ka Seviyan’, ‘Chakle Ka Seviyan’ and ‘Laddu Seviyan’.

All these variants can be used in the dish called ‘Sheerkurma’, which is also prepared on Eid and distributed among friends and relatives.

  • Mamata writes to Centre seeking permission for poppy cultivation in Bengal

Mamata writes to Centre seeking permission for poppy cultivation in Bengal

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: The West Bengal government has written to the Centre seeking permission for poppy cultivation in the state, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday told the state Assembly during the special and extended Budget Session.

She also sought the support of the legislators from the opposition BJP on this count.

“The Union government does not allow poppy cultivation in West Bengal despite this product being a popular food item of the people of the state. So, we are forced to import poppy from other states. That is why the price of this product is so high in West Bengal. If the Union government allows cultivation of poppy in the state, its price will automatically come down here,” she said.

On this issue, she sought the support of BJP legislators claiming that poppy items are also quite favourite of the MLAs from the opposition camp.

“Why is poppy cultivation allowed in just four Indian states? Why should our state be deprived of the permission to cultivate poppies here? The Union government should remember that poppy is not just cultivated for production of intoxicants. Hence, I have written to the Union government for the permission,” she said.

This is not the first time that the West Bengal government has demanded permission to cultivate poppy in the state. Banerjee raised the matter at the Eastern Zonal Council Meeting at Bhubaneswar which was chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. However, no positive decision came on this count since then.

Banerjee also claimed that her government initiative to encourage onion cultivation in West Bengal has brought down the price of the food staple to a great extent. “Previously we had to depend on import of onion from Nasik in Maharashtra. But now through systematic research and development onion is produced in many districts of West Bengal. So, we want to achieve that in case of poppy cultivation as well,” the Chief Minister said.

  • Widows of 3 jawans killed in 2019 Pulwama attack seek permission to end own lives

Widows of 3 jawans killed in 2019 Pulwama attack seek permission to end own lives

    [ad_1]

Jaipur: Widows of three CRPF personnel killed in the 2019 Pulwama terror attack accused the Rajasthan government of not fulfilling its promises made to them and sought permission from Governor Kalraj Mishra to end their own lives, the BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP Kirodi Lal Meena said on Saturday.

Meena has been sitting on a dharna here with the family members of the martyrs for the last few days.

He along with the wives of the CRPF personnel killed in the Pulwama attack went to Raj Bhawan to hand over a representation to the governor. After coming out from Raj Bhawant, they started moving towards the chief minister’s residence and were stopped by the police.

Meena alleged that police personnel pushed the women in which Manju Jat, the widow of Rohitashav Lamba got injured and was admitted to the hospital.

The BJP leader said that instead of fulfilling the demands of the families of the martyrs, the state government was taking recourse to “dictatorship”. “The police misbehaved with them even when they were protesting at the assembly gate recently,” he alleged.

Meena and the family members of the Pulwama terror attack martyrs handed over the representation in Raj Bhawan in which Manju Jat, Madhubala, Sundari Devi and Renu Singh sought permission for euthanasia.

Meena is sitting at dharna at Shaheed Smarak with the family members of the martyrs.
