Gangtok: The Joint Action Committee (JAC) on Sunday urged the people of the state to stay indoors on Monday to protest against the attack on its general secretary in Singham.

JAC vice president Passang Sherpa told reporters that colleague was attacked brutally by some goons in Singham town while he was mobilising the people for the JAC’s call for a peaceful rally against the expansion of definition of Sikkimese people in the Union Finance Act, 2023 passed by Parliament recently.

“We are urging the people of Sikkim to stay indoors tomorrow as a mark of protest against the brutal attack on the JAC general secretary Keshav Sapkota in Singham town yesterday,” Sherpa said.

    MS Education Academy

He lashed out at the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha government for the “prevailing lawlessness” in Sikkim as the voices of opposition was being “stifled by force and violence”.

He said the denial of permisson to take out a peaceful rally in the state capital on Monday in protest against expansion of definition of Sikkimese people and attack on Sapkota proved the charge of prevalence of “lawlessness” in Sikkim.

“We wanted to protest in a democratic way but the administration not only denied permission for the rally, but did not act in time to prevent attack on our office bearer by some goons,” he said.

On the present condition of the injured JAC general secretary, Sherpa said that he was admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Central Referral Hospital and undergoing treatment for multiple injuries.

Earlier in the day, former Chief Minister and Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) President Pawan Kumar Chamling visited CRH and met the injured JAC office bearer and enquired about his health condition.

Meanwhile, the Sikkim Police arrested 11 more people in connection with the attack on Sapkota, an officer said.

The officer said that an investigation was underway and the culprits will be brought to justice.

Pope at Easter: Pray for Ukrainian, Russian people, refugees

    [ad_1]

    vatican pope easter 82600

The pope’s Easter message is known by its Latin name, ”Urbi et Orbi,” which means “to the city and the world.”

Since Russia invaded neighboring Ukraine in February 2022, Francis has repeatedly called for the fighting to end and sought prayers for the “martyred” Ukrainian people.

Ukrainian diplomats have complained that he hasn’t come down hard enough in his statements on Russia and particularly Russian President Vladimir Putin as the Vatican tries to avoid alienating Russia.

“Help the beloved Ukrainian people on their journey towards peace, and shed the light of Easter upon the people of Russia,″ Francis implored God in his Easter speech, which he delivered while sitting in a chair on the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica facing the square. ”Comfort the wounded and all those who have lost loved ones because of the war, and grant that prisoners may return safe and sound to their families.”

He urged the international community to work to end the war in Ukraine and “all conflict and bloodshed in the world, beginning with Syria, which still awaits peace.” Francis also prayed for those who lost loved ones in an earthquake that struck Syria and Turkey two months ago, claiming tens of thousands of lives.

With a renewal in deadly violence affecting both Israelis and Palestinians in recent days, Francis called for a “resumption of dialogue, in a climate of trust and reciprocal respect, between Israelis and Palestinians, so that peace may reign in the Holy City and in the entire region,″ a reference to Jerusalem.

But Francis also noted progress on some fronts.

“Let us rejoice at the concrete signs of hope that reach us from so many countries, beginning with those that offers assistance and welcome to all fleeing war and poverty,” he said, without naming any particular nations.

How to care for asylum-seekers, migrants and refugees, and whether to allow them entrance, is a raging political and social debate in much of Europe, as well in the United States and elsewhere.

The bloody conflicts cited by Francis contrasted with a riot of bright colors lent by orange-red tulips, yellow sprays of forsythia and daffodils, hyacinths and other colorful seasonal flowers that decorated St. Peter’s Square. The blooms were trucked in trucks from the Netherlands and set up in planters to decorate the Vatican square.

Some 45,000 people had gathered by the start of the mid-morning Mass, according to Vatican security services, but the crowd swelled to some 100,00 ahead of the noon appointment for the pontiff’s speech from the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica overlooking the square.

A canopy on the edge of steps on the square sheltered the pontiff, who was back in the public eye 12 hours after a 2.25-hour long Easter vigil ceremony in St. Peter’s Basilica the night before.

Still recovering from bronchitis, Francis, 86, skipped the traditional Good Friday procession at Rome’s Colosseum due to unseasonably cold nighttime temperatures.

Francis has generally rebounded following a three-day stay last week at a Rome hospital where he was administered antibiotics intravenously for bronchitis. He was discharged on April 1.

But near the end of the more than two-hour-long Easter Sunday appearance, Francis seemed to start running out of steam. His voice grew hoarse and he interrupted his speech at one point to cough.

  • Joshimath town is now safe for people: Uttarakhand CM Dhami

Joshimath town is now safe for people: Uttarakhand CM Dhami

    [ad_1]

Dehradun: Joshimath is now safe and there is no fear in people’s minds, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said on Saturday as he flagged off the two-day Auli marathon from the subsidence-hit town.

The event is being organised in the temple town to send the message that Joshimath is safe.

Joshimath hit the headlines in January when huge cracks in houses, fields and roads caused by land subsidence forced people to vacate their homes and shift to relief centres.

    MS Education Academy

More than 300 athletes from different states are taking part in the marathon being organised by the Uttarakhand Ski Mountaineering Association and the Sky Running Association.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony on the premises of the Narsingh and Nav Durga temple, Dhami said, “It is a matter of pride for us that a marathon of such a grand scale begins from Joshimath. We are trying to take several other measures to promote tourism in Uttarakhand.”

Everything is now safe in the town and there is no fear in the minds of people, he said.

“An atmosphere of fear about Joshimath was created in the initial days of the problem. But everything is normal here. The state government has taken positive steps to overcome the problem.

“As a result, more than 11.30 lakh people have already registered for the Char Dham Yatra, which begins on April 22,” the chief minister said.

It seems that the number of pilgrims this time will break the record influx seen last year, he added.

Around 46 lakh people visited Uttarakhand for the yatra last year.

“Auli and Joshimath are absolutely safe now and ready to welcome devotees coming for the annual pilgrimage. The marathon is held in Joshimath is proof of this,” Dhami said.

Athletes from Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Maharashtra and Uttarakhand, among others, are taking part in the sky running and the sky ultra race being organised as part of the two-day marathon.

Good compensation given to affected people: CM

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Saturday said the compensation being given to the affected people in subsidence-hit Joshimath is the best one possible and they should avail of it as soon as possible.

“We have decided the best compensation for the affected people in Joshimath. Those who can avail of the compensation should do so soon,” Dhami said.

He said this while meeting the affected people in Joshimath.

For people who do not have their own piece of land, prefabricated houses have been built, the chief minister said.

He also undertook a spot inspection of the prefabricated houses being constructed on the Auli road.

Giving an update on relief operations underway at Joshimath, Chamoli District Magistrate Himanshu Khurana said 167 families have been kept in relief camps and compensation worth Rs 10.46 crore has been distributed among affected landowners.

Dhami was in Joshimath on Saturday to flag off the two-day Auli marathon to send the message of a safe Joshimath across the country.

Do not put your faith in Jagan: TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu tells people of Andhra

    [ad_1]

Nellore: On a day the ruling YSRCP launched a massive outreach programme under ‘Jagananne Maa Bhavishatyu’ (Jagan is our future), Telugu Desam Party chief N Chandrababu Naidu urged the people of Andhra Pradesh not to repose faith on Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy.

Naidu made these remarks while addressing a TDP meeting in Nellore and declared that Reddy is not the future of Andhra Pradesh.

“Jagan is not your faith nor…your future,” remarked Naidu, as per a statement issued on Friday night, adding that people have to rethink on the trajectory that the state is moving in.

    MS Education Academy

He observed that the youth are getting addicted to drugs and abandoning activities useful for their families.

During his visit in Nellore, the former chief minister took a selfie in front of some rows of AP Township and Infrastructure Development Corporation (APTIDCO) homes, questioning why these houses are not yet allotted to the beneficiaries and called on TDP leaders to challenge Reddy on what he has done for the people and the state.

Naidu alleged the Chief Minister imposed a burden of Rs 10.5 lakh crore on the people of the state in the past four years, including levying tax on garbage.

He noted that it was the TDP which laid the foundation for welfare in the state when former Andhra Pradesh CM and party founder N T Rama Rao had launched the Rs 2 per kg rice scheme and houses for the poor. Naidu also highlighted the ‘largest’ number of welfare schemes rolled out by his government in Andhra Pradesh between 2014 and 2019.

The Leader of the Opposition highlighted that Reddy has completely neglected the Polavaram multi-purpose irrigation project.

    main trumpsurrender 0404 anselm5b

    About one week from Tuesday

Prosecutors are expected to turn over to Trump’s defense team the first tranche of discovery materials, consisting of grand jury minutes and exhibits, as well as notes of witness statements for those who testified before the grand jury.

    Around June 10

Prosecutors are expected to give the defense the second tranche of discovery materials, including materials they received in response to subpoenas, other witness materials and some police documents.

    Date unknown

Prosecutors will hand over a third tranche of discovery materials, including certain internal emails from the district attorney’s office that are considered discoverable under the law. “Obviously, defense is entitled to see every single email discovery in this case, but those email messages tend not to be the most significant materials,” one of the assistant district attorneys told the judge on Tuesday.

    Aug. 8

All motions must be filed with the court. Trump’s defense attorneys could file a motion to dismiss the indictment, a motion to argue that the statute of limitations has expired, or motion to argue that the charges should be downgraded to misdemeanors.

    Sept. 19

Prosecutors must file their responses to Trump’s motions.

    Dec. 4

The next court date in the case. The judge will issue his decisions on the motions. Blanche, Trump’s attorney, asked the judge to excuse Trump from appearing in person at this hearing, citing the cost and burden of the security measures required by his visit to the courthouse, but the judge denied that request. The judge added, however, that “if a reason were to come up that your client was unable to appear on that date — something unanticipated — you can certainly run that by me.”

Missouri tornado kills multiple people, sows destruction

    [ad_1]

    screenshot 2023 04 05 112651

He said a search and rescue operation involving multiple agencies was underway and that crews had to use chainsaws to cutback trees and brush to reach some homes.

The patrol posted an overhead photo of the damage that showed uprooted trees and homes that had been reduced to rubble.

Justin Gibbs, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Paducah, Kentucky, said the tornado touched down at around 3:30 a.m. and remained on the ground for roughly 15 minutes, traveling an estimated 15-20 miles (24-32 kilometers).

A weather service team was headed to Bollinger County to gather details about the tornado, but Gibbs said it’s clear “it was big. It was a significant tornado.”

He noted that tornadoes are especially dangerous when they touch down late at night or early in the morning, as this one did.

“It’s definitely a nightmare from a warning standpoint,” Gibbs said. “It’s bad anytime, but it’s especially bad at 3:30 in the morning.”

The storms moving through the Midwest and South threaten some areas still reeling from a deadly bout of bad weather last weekend. The Storm Prediction Center said up to 40 million people in an area that includes major cities including Chicago, Indianapolis, Detroit and Memphis, Tennessee, were at risk from the storms later Wednesday. As of late Wednesday morning, the the greatest threat appeared to be to an area stretching from lower Michigan into Tennessee and Kentucky.

Fierce storms that started last Friday and continued through the weekend spawned deadly tornadoes in 11 states as the system plodded through Arkansas and into the South, Midwest and Northeast.

Schools in Little Rock, Arkansas, canceled Wednesday classes because the storms were expected to move through the area during the morning rush, KFVS-TV reported.

At least two tornadoes were confirmed Tuesday in Illinois as storms targeted the state and eastern Iowa and southwest Wisconsin before nightfall.

The National Weather Service issued tornado warnings in Iowa and Illinois on Tuesday evening and said a confirmed twister was spotted southwest of Chicago near Bryant, Illinois. Officials said another tornado touched down Tuesday morning in the western Illinois community of Colona. Local news reports showed wind damage to some businesses there.

Earlier Tuesday, strong thunderstorms swept through the Quad Cities area of Iowa and Illinois, with winds up to 90 mph (145 kph) and baseball-sized hail. No injuries were reported, but trees were downed and some businesses were damaged in Moline, Illinois.

Northern Illinois, from Moline to Chicago, saw 75-80 mph (120-128 kph) winds and hail 2 to 3 inches (5 to 8 centimeters) in diameter Tuesday afternoon, National Weather Service meteorologist Scott Baker said. The agency received reports of semitrucks tipped over by winds in Lee County, about 95 miles (153 km) west of Chicago.

The same conditions that fueled those storms — an area of low pressure combined with strong southerly winds — were setting up the severe weather Tuesday into early Wednesday, said Ryan Bunker, a meteorologist with the National Weather Center in Norman, Oklahoma.

Those conditions, which typically include dry air from the West going up over the Rockies and crashing into warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico, are what make the U.S. so prone to tornadoes and other severe storms.

Bihar’s people will straighten those who want to hang people upside down: Tejashwi

    [ad_1]

Patna: Bihar’s Deputy Chief minister Tejashwi Yadav on Wednesday slammed Union Home Minister Amit Shah over his statement of hanging people, behind the recent violence “upside down”.

“The people of Bihar will make straight those who are claiming to hang people upside down.

“Some people come from Gujarat and make statements here. This is the land of Mahatma Buddha. Gandhi became Mahatma Gandhi in Bihar, it is a land of Karpoori Thakur, Lalu Prasad, and Nitish Kumar and it will not tolerate any rioter. The leaders of BJP conspired during the holy month (Ramzan) but now we would not let anyone go scot free. The state government is looking after the matter very seriously,” Yadav said.

    MS Education Academy

“On the day of Ram Navami, the march was held at 118 places. It was peacefully completed at all the places except in Sasaram and Bihar Sharif. The people of BJP tried to flare up the riots at these two places. Earlier, they had tried to create a fight between Bihar and Tamil Nadu but failed. Now, they were involved in riots. I want to tell them that those who were involved in riots will not go scot free,” he added.

“We may be in power or not, peace and social harmony will remain in Bihar. They had freaked out after the massive rally of Purnea. The people of Bihar are smart and they understand it very well,” the RJD leader said.

“I want to appeal to the people of Bihar to not to come under the influence of BJP and rioters. They are misleading the people from the real issues. Amit Shah should tell us whether the Centre would give special status to Bihar or not,” he added.

People complain of overpriced mutton during Ramadan

    [ad_1]

Srinagar, Apr 05: Amid the holy month of Ramadan, people have accused the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumers Affairs (FCSCA) department of failing to regulate the prices of mutton which they say is being sold at Rs 650-700 per kg against the government notified price of Rs 535.

People from various parts of Srinagar told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that the mutton shopkeepers are openly selling it at exorbitant rates. They said there is the least inspection by the FCSCA department to check on “illegal profiteering”.

“This is the holy month and we are being fleeced by the mutton shopkeepers. The month of Ramadan witnesses extra consumption of mutton but they are making it difficult for us by selling it at Rs 650 and at some places Rs 700 per kg,” Touseef Ramzan, a Srinagar resident said.

“Mutton retailers are selling it at Rs 650 per kg, how is that okay when the government’s declared price is Rs 535? I often have to argue with the shopkeeper over the rate. Why is the concerned department not doing anything about it?” Touseef asked.

Jan Mohammad, another Srinagar resident, alleged that the department is soft on those who resort to illegal profiteering or overpricing. He said that in some areas, mutton is being sold at Rs 700 per kg.

“There should be a punishment to offenders on the basis of mutton quality grades. Imposing a mere fine won’t make any impact; the authorities should suspend their license,” he said.

“I have to buy mutton for a patient at home, who needs mutton soup on a daily basis, but the overcharged prices are making it difficult for us,” Jan added.

Similar reports were received from other districts of the valley where people have complained of overpricing of mutton by sellers.

Meanwhile, the Director of Food Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Kashmir department, Dr Abdul Salaam Mir told KNO that he has given strict directions to his enforcement teams to seal the shops that are selling mutton beyond Rs 600 per kg.

“If there are rate violations, people can call us on the toll-free number 18001807106,” he said, adding that their department’s enforcement teams will intensify the inspection to check on the mutton rates and they will deal strictly with the offenders.

Murder of tribal man: Kerala special court convicts 13 people for

    [ad_1]

Palakkad: A special court in Kerala on Tuesday convicted 13 people for beating to death a tribal man in Palakkad district of the state for allegedly stealing food articles in 2018.

Madhu, a tribal man from Attappady, was beaten to death after he was caught and tied up by a group of local people alleging theft on February 22, 2018.

More than five years after the incident, special court judge K M Ratheesh Kumar convicted them for the offence of culpable homicide not amounting to murder under Section 304 Part II of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) which carries a maximum punishment of 10 years jail term, Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) Rajesh M Menon told reporters.

    MS Education Academy

The jail terms to be served by the convicts would be pronounced on Wednesday, the SPP said.

He also said that of the 13, the first accused was convicted for the offence under Section 304 II of IPC and the remaining 12 were additionally held guilty for the crimes under Section 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means) and 367 (kidnapping or abducting in order to subject person to griev ous hurt, slavery) of the IPC.

Sections 326 and 367 carry maximum punishments of life imprisonment and up to 10 years jail term, respectively.

The 12 convicts were also held guilty for the offence under Section 3(1)(d) of the SC/ST Act, the SPP said.

The 16th accused in the case was only held guilty for the offence of assault or criminal force otherwise than on grave provocation under Section 352 IPC which carries a punishment which may extend to three months or a fine which may extend to Rs 500 or both, he said.

The SPP said the court was of the view that the accused did not have the intention to kill the tribal man.

Of the 16 persons, the remaining two accused were acquitted by the court.

SPP Menon said the court did not find the accused guilty of murder and the reasons for the same would be evident after the judgement copy is made available.

Madhu’s mother said she was not satisfied with the verdict, especially the acquittal of the two accused and none of the 16 being convicted for murder. “I will appeal against this verdict,” she told reporters outside the court.

The victim’s sister said she was thankful to the court for convicting 14 of the 16 accused.

The sister also said she was happy with the outcome as no one thought they could carry their fight for justice to Madhu so long and till this stage.

“So, I will no longer be disappointed or sad. I know I can take this matter all the way to the Supreme Court, if required. We will go in appeal seeking murder charges and against the acquittal of the two accused.

“I do not believe that my brother has got justice. He will not get justice till all of them (all 16 accused) are convicted,” she said outside the court.

The special court had reserved its judgement in the case on March 30.

Prior to the pronouncement of the verdict, the victim’s mother and sister said they expected that Madhu will get justice. “We expect a good verdict,” the victim’s mother said.

His sister said: “I believe my brother will get justice. We expect it to be a good verdict.”

The trial in the matter saw witnesses turning hostile, allegations of threats to the victim’s family to settle or withdraw the case and a change in the SPP in June last year.

Advocate Menon, who was the additional public prosecutor in the case, took charge as SPP in June last year after the victim’s family sought a change in prosecutor.

He was the fourth SPP in the case.

According to the post-mortem report in the case, Madhu had injuries on the head and bruises all over the body, including broken ribs, as well as internal bleeding, police had said.

Madhu, who was said to be mentally unsound, was living in a cave in the forest for the past several months, his family had said.

His mother and sister had told television channels back in 2018 that a group of nearly 10-15 persons had gone to the forest and thrashed him for allegedly stealing food articles from some shops in the forest-fringe Agali town of Palakkad district.

Vote for any party but not TMC, BJP’s Suvendu urges people

    [ad_1]

Chandrakona: Donning a white T-shirt with his ‘No Vote to Mamata’ slogan on it, leader of opposition in West Bengal assembly Suvendu Adhikari on Monday addressed a rally in Paschim Medinipur district, urging the people to vote for any party in the panchayat elections but not the TMC.

Addressing the rally in Chandrakona, Adhikari claimed that a BJP government in the state can accelerate the development of West Bengal as it will work in synergy with the Centre.

“I would urge the people not to cast their votes for this corrupt TMC. Vote for any party or candidate you like, but please don’t cast your valuable votes for this party of thieves,” he said.

    MS Education Academy

“If those opposed to the TMC stick to their single-point agenda of removing it from power, then this corrupt regime can be ousted,” he added.

Criticising the ‘No Vote to BJP’ campaign ahead of the 2021 assembly elections, Adhikari coined the ‘No Vote to Mamata’ slogan, which he used extensively during the Sagardighi bypolls in Murshidabad district. The Congress with the support of the Left Front won the by-election last month in a major setback to the TMC.

Amid criticism by the TMC that the state BJP was working in an understanding with the Congress and the CPI(M), Adhikari had earlier clarified that “No Vote to Mamata” doesn’t mean a call to vote for the other two opposition parties.

TMC state spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said his party enjoys “solid support” of the people of the state, and the results of the upcoming elections would prove it.

“We all know that the CPI(M), BJP and the Congress have formed an unholy alliance in West Bengal. But, this nexus will be defeated by the TMC with the support of the people of the state,” he said.
