Chidambaram cautions people of Karnataka against Uniform Civil Code, NRC

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Tuesday cautioned the people of Karnataka against the BJP poll manifesto promising Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and National Register of Citizens (NRC) by calling these topics “a pernicious agenda” of the ruling party to divide and polarise the state.

BJP’s election manifesto for Karnataka released on Monday said: “We will implement the UCC in Karnataka based on the recommendations given by a high-level committee which is to be constituted for the purpose. We will introduce the National Register of Citizens in Karnataka and ensure speedy deportation of all illegal immigrants in the state.”

Addressing a press conference here, Chidambaram termed the UCC and NRC as the “pernicious agenda that is creeping into the south of India” and said they (BJP) are looking for a gateway in Karnataka”.

The former Union minister also said he was not worried about anything else in the BJP’s manifesto as “those are irrelevant”.

“I am concerned deeply about the promise of the UCC and the NRC. This will divide Karnataka, this will polarise Karnataka. This will create social conflict,” he said.

According to Chidrambaram, the BJP will try to enter other states including Tamil Nadu (using UCC and NRC).

“We will fiercely resist these pernicious ideas entering Tamil Nadu. But my humble appeal to the people of Karnataka is fiercely resist and stop the entry of this sinister, pernicious agenda into Karnataka,” the Congress leader asserted.

Why is PM Modi silent when his party people abuse me: Uddhav Thackeray

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray on Monday asked why PM Narendra Modi is silent on the abuse hurled against him and his family members.

“Modi said Congress abused him 91 times. But why are you silent when your people abuse me and my family,” Thackeray said, addressing the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi rally in Mumbai.

“Their abusive language shows their culture,” he said. “I am asking the RSS: do you accept such an offspring (BJP),” he added.

    MS Education Academy

Thackeray referred to the criticism he has faced for aligning with Congress and NCP.

“When I go with Congress and NCP, they (BJP) claim that I have forsaken Hindutva. If that is the case, then what about (RSS chief) Mohan Bhagwat’s visit to a mosque,” he said.

Thackeray said he will visit Barsu, the site of the proposed refinery in Ratnagiri district, on May 6. “I will go there and talk to the locals. How can you stop me? This is not POK,” he said.

“Yes, I suggested the site for the refinery when I was the CM, but my letter (to Modi) did not specify that police should fire on protesters,” he said.

Slamming the government for shifting mega projects from Maharashtra, Thackeray said, “we will make pieces of anyone who tries to separate Mumbai from Maharashtra.”

Thackeray also flayed the Modi government for targeting opposition leaders by using agencies like ED and CBI.

“If you have guts, send ED to the house the Chinese president, whose country has encroached upon a huge area of India,” he said.

On a sarcastic note, he suggested that industrialist Gautam Adani’s life story must be part of school curriculum so that people of India can learn how to become rich like him.

People will teach a lesson to those who termed Modi ‘useless’: Bommai

    [ad_1]

Mysuru: Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Monday said that the Congress leaders are indulging in cheap talk due to the fear of losing the assembly election.

He said Congress MLA Priyank Kharge termed Modi as ‘useless’. Bommai appealed to the people to vote for the Bharatiya Janata Party to teach a lesson to the Congress.

Speaking at a poll rally in favour of Krishnaraja BJP candidate Srivatsa here on Monday, he said Mysuru is a historic, heritage, and world-famous city and the BJP has been strong in the last three decades.

    MS Education Academy

“The people have voted for the MLAs and MPs. The turnout of the people clearly indicates that Srivatsa will get elected by a big margin. We are trying to get positive votes through the programs of the double-engine government. But the opposition parties, out of frustration, are making cheap remarks and doing negative campaigning. People will vote only for those who have worked for them,” he said.

The CM said both the state and Union governments have implemented several schemes such as the Kisan Samman for farmers, Ayushman Bharat for public healthcare, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana in both the urban and rural areas to build houses and the Vidyanidhi scheme for the children of farmers and agricultural labourers.

Mysuru has been developed under the Smart City project. Prime Minister Narendra Modi loves Mysuru and its citizens. The PM selected Mysuru for celebrating Yoga Day. Those who love Modi must vote for Srivatsa, he said.

“As the CM, I have given grants of over Rs 250 crore for the celebration of Dasara along with an additional Rs 5 crore and implemented the Mysuru Tourism Circuit. Mysuru has been an international tourism destination.

“Work is in progress and next year the number of tourists visiting the city will double. Rs 80 crore has been given to rebuild a hospital and impetus given to women’s programs,” he said.

Out of frustration, the Congress is giving the guarantee of 10 kilograms of free rice but it was given during the regime of former BJP CM Yediyurappa. The Congress government reduced the quantity to five kg. The Congress leaders are deceiving the voters just for the sake of votes, Bommai stated.

Protect secular countenance from dangers of communalism: Farooq Abdullah to J-K people

    [ad_1]

Jammu: National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah on Sunday asked people of Jammu and Kashmir to protect the country’s secular countenance from the dangers of “communalism and hate politics”.

“Secularism is one of the philosophical pillars of our party and in contemporary times the idea of secularism is of utmost relevance as new clouds of fears, apprehensions and uncertainties are gathering over the nation’s social horizon.

“I see no way of achieving anything in J-K without a lasting unity between different sections of our society,” Abdullah said.

    MS Education Academy

The former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister was speaking at the 31st annual Gurmat Samagam near Peer Baba here.

Appreciating Sevak Paramjit Singh Wazir and the entire Gurmat Samagam organizing body for their efforts towards fostering unity and amity among people, he said communal frenzy has no place in this globalized world.

“Societies which are infested with communalism cannot grow. People have to keep guard against attempts at inciting passions on religious issues, especially in the run-up to elections,” the Lok Sabha MP from Srinagar said.

Abdullah said people of Jammu and Kashmir have to forge solidarities, irrespective of their caste, creed, religion and region to undo injustices perpetrated on them.

“The people of J-K are facing similar issues in the form of unemployment, inflation, and poverty. These formidable challenges require us to work together in the right direction,” the NC leader said.

Extolling people of the Union territory for their secular legacy, Abdullah said “the need of the hour is to strengthen this heirloom of brotherhood and unity which we have inherited from our ancestors.”

People like Atiq Ahmad, Amritpal Singh cancer for country, despise them: RSS leader

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Senior RSS leader Indresh Kumar on Sunday said people such as gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad and Khalistani preacher Amritpal Singh should be despised as they are enemies of humanity and “cancer” for the country.

Kumar was addressing an Eid Milan ceremony organised by the Muslim Rashtriya Manch (MRM) in the national capital.

Ahmad and his brother ashraf were shot dead at point-blank range by three men posing as journalists on April 15 in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj, while Khalistan sympathiser Amritpal Singh was arrested on April 23 by the Punjab Police after a month-long hunt.

“Be it Atiq Ahmad, Amritpal, any terrorist or naxalite, all of them are enemies of humanity. They are going to snatch away people’s smiles. Such people should be despised and not supported. Voice should be raised against them. People like atiq and amritpal are cancer for the country,” the MRM in a statement quoted the RSS leader as saying at the event.

Kumar, a member of the RSS national executive, is the chief patron of the MRM.

“Eid means happiness but if Islam is tainted because of a few people, who believe in Islam, there is a need for us to ponder seriously as to what paths have been shown to us by Islam and the Quran,” Kumar said.

He called upon people to follow their respective religions and have respect for each others’ faith. “We are all one and if we accept this, there will never be any quarrel or trouble,” Kumar said, adding that “just follow your religion”.

“Don’t condemn or criticise any other religion. Have respect for all religions,” he said .

Addressing the event, senior RSS leader Ram Lal stressed on maintaining unity and integrity of the country and called upon people to take a vow that they will not let anyone divide them.

‘Operation Kaveri’: India brings back another batch of 229 people from Sudan

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: India brought home another batch of 229 people on Sunday under its mission to evacuate stranded Indians from violence-hit Sudan.

The fresh batch of evacuees arrived in Bengaluru, a day after 365 people returned from the African country to Delhi.

“#OperationKaveri One more flight brings back 229 passengers to Bengaluru,” External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar wrote on Twitter.

    MS Education Academy

As many as 125 people among the 229 evacuees hail from Karnataka, according to a statement issued by Karnataka State Disaster Management Authority Commissioner Manoj Rajan. From the latest group of evacuees, 29 were quarantined, he said.

Rajan said 255 people from Karnataka, including 134 from Shivamogga district and 53 from Mysuru, have so far returned to the state in four batches since April 27.

As per official data, the total number of Indians who have been brought back home from Sudan now stands at 1,954.

Under the evacuation mission, 754 people arrived in India in two batches on Friday.

The Indians were brought back from the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah where India has set up a transit camp for the evacuees.

The first batch of 360 evacuees returned to New Delhi in a commercial plane on Wednesday. The second batch of 246 Indian evacuees arrived in Mumbai in a C17 Globemaster aircraft of the Indian Air Force (IAF) on Thursday.

Under ‘Operation Kaveri’, India has been taking its citizens in buses from the conflict zones of Khartoum and other troubled areas to Port Sudan from where they are being taken to Jeddah in the IAF’s heavy-lift transport aircraft and the Indian Navy’s ships.

From Jeddah, the Indians are being brought back home in either commercial flights or IAF’s aircraft.

India has set up separate control rooms in Jeddah and Port Sudan, and the Indian embassy in Khartoum has been coordinating with them, besides being in touch with the headquarters of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in Delhi.

Sudan has been witnessing deadly fighting between the country’s army and a paramilitary group that has reportedly left around 400 people dead.

Earlier in the week, Jaishankar had announced the launch of ‘Operation Kaveri’ to bring back stranded Indians from the war-ravaged African country.

People of J-K can’t be deprived of elected govt for long time: Azad

    [ad_1]

Srinagar: Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) chairman Ghulam Nabi Azad on Sunday said that the time has come for the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir and it is undemocratic to deprive the people of an elected government for a long time.

The former Union minister said that DPAP is a party that believes in democratic values and will ensure that various pro-people initiatives are launched to benefit the weaker sections of people in our society if elected to power.

“If the DPAP is elected to power we will ensure the poor are provided free electricity and other benefits so that they won’t face burden on their budget. We will also work to create diverse economic opportunities in various sectors including tourism, agriculture and horticulture so that the economy of common people improves,” he said while addressing a public gathering at Bandipora.

    MS Education Academy

Azad said that when he was the Chief minister of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, he granted the district status to Bandipora, opened hospitals, colleges and set up a long network of roads to benefit the people.

However, it has been a long time since then and the development in the district seems at a halt now and successive governments have overlooked the growing infrastructural requirements of the district, he said.

Azad said that unlike other people, he would not make false promises and keep people in the dark.

“I will make promises and will deliver on them unlike most of the politicians who visit you and make a number of promises never to deliver,” he said.

People will teach Congress a lesson in May 10 polls: Karnataka CM Bommai

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Hitting out at the Congress and its leaders for criticising the BJP in Karnataka over the reservation issue, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Saturday said the people will teach a lesson to the grand old party in the May 10 Assembly elections.

“The Congress leaders say those who avail of the reservation facilities are beggars. Are the SC, ST, OBC, and Lingayats beggars? The people will teach a lesson to the Congress,” Bommai said at a rally.

Speaking at a roadshow while campaigning for BJP candidate M.S. Somalingappa in Siraguppa on Saturday, Bommai said Somalingappa has developed the constituency, adding he also wished to develop his constituency on the lines of Siraguppa.

    MS Education Academy

“Among the development works included a college and Kanaka Bhavana. All this happened due to the BJP government. As many as 54 lakh farmers have benefited from the Kisan Sanman scheme, thanks to the double-engine government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Around 1.5 crore people have got the Ayushman card, 13 lakh houses have been constructed and 40 lakh houses have got drinking water connections,” Bommai said.

“After I became the Chief Minister, the ‘Vidyanidhi’ scheme was implemented to help the children of farmers, fishermen, and agricultural laborers. For youth and women, the government implemented Swami Vivekananda Yuva Shakti and Stree Samarthya schemes, respectively. In the name of social justice, the Congress party would keep the Dalits in the wells, get them voted for the Congress in the election, and again keep them in the same place.

“I took a bold step to hike the quota for SC/ST thanks to the inspiration from Buddha, Basavanna, Valmiki, Kanakadasa, and our Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. Let the Congress stop us if they have the guts,” he added.

Poonch Attack: Common People Are Being Tortured, Says Mehbooba Mufti

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday alleged that the people of Poonch and Rajouri districts were being harassed and tortured by the security forces after the recent attack in Poonch that left five soldiers dead. She also demanded an in-depth probe into the attack.

Addressing a press conference at party headquarters, Mehbooba targetted the central government  over the militant attack and said that an in-depth investigation of the attack should be done.

“How did the attack happen in a highly-secured area that is under the heavy presence of troops? There should be an investigation into the incident so that the truth comes forward. But the truth should not come at the cost of harassing the people of Rajouri and Poonch,” she added.

The PDP chief said that ever since the attack took place the authorities have been “oppressing” the common people in the twin districts. “The situation is that the people of these areas are being harassed, caught, questioned, and tortured,” she alleged.

Questioning the death of Mukhtar Shah, a resident of the Bataduria area of Poonch,  who allegedly committed suicide after being questioned in connection to the poonch attack Mehbooba said, “A purported video of Shah came out in which he says he was fed up because his family, friends, and villagers were harassed. There should be an investigation,” Mufti said,

Adding further she said  that there are two others who have also been grievously injured because of sustained questioning and torture.

In the aftermath of the Poonch incident, hundreds of people have been questioned and among which dozens of people are either in NIA, army or police custody, she said. “People of Rajouri and Poonch are the most peace-loving and have never supported guns,” she said.

The PDP leader also alleged, “The locals are being oppressed ever since the start of G-20 events. Hundreds of local youth have been picked ahead of the G-20 meeting which is being held in Srinagar next month.”

“Ever since the process of the G-20 meeting has started, an arrest spree has started and people are being questioned. The situation in J&K is worse than in Guantanamo Bay. Let them do the G-20 event, but why are the youth being arrested?” she asked—(KNO)
