‘Callous’ Budget has betrayed hopes of vast majority of people: Chidambaram

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Congress leader P. Chidambaram on Wednesday accused the government for ignoring the common man behind, saying the absence of key concerns in Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s Budget speech showed how far this government is removed from the people and their concerns about life, livelihood and the growing inequality between the rich and the poor.

He termed it a callous Budget that has “betrayed” the hopes of the vast majority of the people.

Addressing a press conference, Chidambaram said: “FM has not mentioned the words unemployment, poverty, inequality, or equity anywhere in her speech. Mercifully, she has mentioned the word poor twice in her speech. I am sure the people of India will take note of who are in the concerns of the government and who are not.”

He said that last year, the government estimated the GDP for 2021-22 at Rs 232,14,703 and, assuming a nominal growth rate of 11.1 per cent, projected the GDP for 2022-23 at Rs 258,00,000 crore. The GDP for 2021-22 has been since revised upward to Rs 236,64,637 crore.

In today’s Budget papers, the GDP for 2022-23 has been estimated at Rs 273,07,751 crore which yields a growth rate of 15.4 percent, much above the earlier estimate, he added.

Chidambaram also said that no taxes have been reduced except for the small number, who have opted for the new tax regime, while no indirect taxes have been reduced.

“There is no cut in the cruel and irrational GST rates. There is no reduction in the prices of petrol, diesel, cement, fertilisers and no cut in the numerous surcharges and cesses which are, any way, not shared with the state governments.

“Who has benefited by this Budget? Certainly, not the poor. Not the youth looking desperately for jobs.A Not those who have been laid off. Not the bulk of the taxpayers. Not the homemaker. Not the thinking Indians who are shocked by the growing inequality, the rise of the number of billionaires and the wealth being accumulated in the hands of the 1 per cent of the population. Certainly, not you,” Chidambaram said.

He also accused the government of being determined to push the fortunes of GIFT city, Ahmedabad,A at the cost of other commercial and financial centres. The government is also determined to push the ‘new’ tax regime for which there are few takers for a variety of reasons.

“Besides, making the new tax regime the default option is grossly unfair and will rob the ordinary tax payer of the meagre social security that he may get under the old tax regime,” he added.

BBC adds Salman Khan Cameo in its Modi Documentary to reach more people

    [ad_1]

The Supreme Court said that it will list for hearing on February 6 a PIL challenging the “ban” on the BBC documentary ‘India: The Modi Question’. Earlier, the government had banned the documentary.

Like SRK, BBC has been struggling to get audience for its documentary and after failing to make it a controversy ahead of 2024 general election, BBC too has decided to add Salaman Khan’s cameo in its documentary to make it reach wider audience.

However, Salman Khan’s role in the documentary isn’t finalised yet but his picture with Modi flying kite is likely to be added in the documentary, reported Fauxy reporter in Godhara.

Since the release of Pathaan which had only Salman Khan’s cameo as worth watching, Salman Khan has been keeping extremely busy.

If sources are to be believed, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has requested Salman Khan to do a cameo during her Budget speech.

Florida: A mass shooting in a Florida city has left 10 people wounded while two in critical condition, the Lakeland Police Department announced on Monday, according to CNN.

According to the police, a dark-blue, four-door sedan pulled up at the scene of the shooting, Police Department Chief Sam Taylor said.

“The vehicle slowed, did not stop, and the four windows went down. It appeared to be occupied by four shooters in the vehicle,” Taylor said, adding, “They started firing from all four windows of the vehicle and shooting males on both sides.”

The car took off at a high speed, and police are “actively looking for that vehicle now,” CNN quoted Taylor saying.

According to ABC, the police responded to calls of a shooting at a location near Iowa Avenue North and Plum Street at 3.43 pm.

All the victims were adult men between 20 and 35 years old, according to Taylor.

“We will be out most of the night trying to figure out who these individuals are in the vehicle,” Taylor said.

Police found certain ‘quantity’ of marijuana at the scene, which indicates to police that “there was a narcotic sales or sales of marijuana going on at the time,” Taylor said, adding, “Whether that is significant or related to this is unknown,” according to CNN.

The chief said in his 34 years career in this department, he had never worked on a case where so many people had been shot at one time.

“This is something that doesn’t happen to Lakeland,” he said.

  • Rahul Owed Apology To People For Congress’s Himalayan Blunders In J&K: Rana

Rahul Owed Apology To People For Congress’s Himalayan Blunders In J&K: Rana

    [ad_1]

SAMBA: Senior BJP leader Devender Singh Rana today blamed Rahul Gandhi for failing in apologizing to the people of Jammu and Kashmir for the Himalayan blunders committed by the Congress in this part of the country since 1947.

“Least to speaking about tendering apology, Rahul Gandhi took pride in being in the company of PAGD allies who have exploited Kashmiris, one way or the other, all these years,” Devender Rana told media at the side-lines of Yagya organized by Sant Sri Balak Yogeshwar Das Ji Maharaj.

Rana said that Rahul Gandhi also preferred to align with those who push for talks with Pakistan whenever the rogue neighbour perpetrated mayhem through her lackeys—be it in Dangri Rajouri or target killings of Kashmiri Pandits and the outsiders. He said the former Congress President also conveniently forgot the threats and warnings of the PAGD leaders that there will be nobody to hold Tiranga in Kashmir.

He must now thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi for creating a situation where, not only the people of Kashmir are carrying on economic activities and daily chores freely and fearlessly, but political leaders like him freely enjoying snow in the Valley.

The Senior BJP leader said the people do not know whether Rahul Gandhi has joined the nation together or not during his just concluded so-called yatra but they have certainly watched his brazen bonding with ‘Bharat Todo’ PAGD, which stands for Pakistan, anti-national, separatist, radicalised and secessionist elements.

“No wonder, the person, who embarked on the yatra to Kashmir to understand, as he says, the feelings of the people, must be returning back as ignorant as he has been, due to lack of his understanding”, he added.

Rana said that the peace and normalcy dawning in Kashmir is result of path breaking initiatives taken by the Prime Minister for holistic development of the Valley post abrogation of Article 370, which removed all obstacles in bonding of Jammu and Kashmir with rest of the country emotionally. Unfortunately, he said, Rahul Gandhi did not clear his stand on Article 370 even at the close of his yatra.

On a question about Rahul Gandhi hoisting tricolor in Lal Chowk, Rana said this is the changed Kashmir and changed scenario in the Congress as well. In this context, he recalled the statement of the Congress General Secretary in Jammu, observing that unfurling the national flag in Kashmir is RSS legacy and said that this tradition has now inspired their young leader to follow the Sangh footsteps. Better late than never, he observed and wished Rahul Gandhi to understand the Indian ethos in its totality. That will be true repentance of the Congress for the sins committed in independent India, he added.

On the Mahayagya, Devender Rana complimented Sant Sri Balak Yogeshwar Das Ji Maharaj as a tribute to martyrs, due to valour and sacrifices of whom the nation is breathing in democratic, sovereign nation. He said the Indian Armed Forces were the most disciplined and brave forces across the world, which are capable of defending the territorial integrity with valour.

Those accompanying Rana for participating in the Mahayagya included Surinder Choudhary, Mangu Shah, Surinder Singh Gill and others.

US arrests 3 people for plotting against Iranian activist Masih Alinejad

    [ad_1]

US Attorney General Merrick Garland announced on Friday, the arrest of 3 people on suspicion of involvement in what he described as a “Tehran-backed plot” for attempting to assassinate journalist and a prominent human rights activist of Iranian origin Masih Alinejad in the United States (US).

Garland said that two of the three arrested are members of a mafia operating in Eastern Europe and linked to Iran.

The announcement of the arrest of the three people and charges of attempted murder came to them six months after one of them, Khaled Mehdiyev, was arrested in front of Alinejad’s house in New York in possession of an AK-47 assault rifle.

US Secretary of Justice did not mention the name of the journalist and human rights activist, but the American activist of Iranian origin, Masih Alinejad, published a video clip on Twitter, in which she confirmed that she was the person concerned.

Masih Alinejad said she had just returned from the FBI headquarters in New York, where she had a meeting with 12 agents in the office.

She further adds that she learned from the FBI that there were 3 people in New York who tried to kill her on American soil.

Masih aising her left hand, pointing to her face, said, “Yes, this is the face of the person who was targeted by the assassination plot,” confirming that she was not afraid for her life.

Masih Alinejad, an Iranian journalist and feminist activist, participated in publishing tweets supporting the demonstrators in Iran after the death of the young Iranian woman, Mahsa Amini, after she was arrested by the morality police in September 20.

  • Political rallies provide platform to interact with people, says CPI (M)

Political rallies provide platform to interact with people, says CPI (M)

    [ad_1]

Visakhapatnam: Communist Party of India (M) politburo member B V Raghavulu on Saturday said the government orderbrought by the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress (YSRC) government is an attempt to thwart opposition parties.

Raghavulu, while speaking to reporters, accused the YS Jagan Mohan Reddy government of snatching the rights of parties by bringing old government orders with new names.

The order comes in the wake of a stampede at a rally earlier this month organised by the main opposition Telugu Desam Party at Kandukuru in which eight people were killed. The prohibitory order was issued later in the month under the provisions of the Police Act, of 1861.

“It provides a platform to meet people directly to address their public issues,” Raghavulu said.

“The padayatra trend has been running in Andhra Pradesh. We express our solidarity with the Yatra taken by political parties under the auspices of Special Status Sadhana Samiti,” he added.

The YSR Congress government has prohibited public meetings and rallies from being held on roads, including national highways, citing public safety.

He also said “those” who are taking padayatra in democracy should be welcomed.

Notably, Rayalaseema Saaguneeti Sadhana Samiti (RSSS), in 2019, launched a 100-km-long padayatra from Nandyal town to demand a rightful share of water for backward regions in the state.

Earlier in the month, S Vishnuvardhan Reddy, the Bharatiya Janata Party BJP General Secretary in the state criticised the Andhra Pradesh government for its strange decision of banning public meetings on roads and said the political parties have the right to hold rallies.

Raghavulu accused the YS Jagan Mohan Reddy government of taking away the rights of Sarpanches in the state.

“It is foolish of him to mock democracy and bring village swaraj. Village Panchayats should be given rights and funds,” he added.

He added that the state government should be pressured to withdraw the privatization proposal” of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant.

    [ad_1]

Hamirpur: As many as 150 people in Rangas, Kandrola, and Jol-Sappad panchayats of the Nadaun sub-division of Hamirpur district fell ill allegedly after consuming contaminated water.

The drinking water was being supplied from a drinking water scheme from the nearby khads.

According to reports, people from a dozen villages, including Banh, Jandgi Gujran, Jandali Rajputan, Panyala, Pathiyalu, Niyati, Rangas Chowki Haar, Thain and Sankar have been affected by the outbreak of water-borne diseases and the number is expected to go up.

Patients from these villages were complaining of vomiting and diarrhoea for the last three days, alleging that consuming contaminated water led to the problem.

Block medical officer (BMO) Dr KK Sharma said that three teams of the health department were sent to the spot. Of these, two teams have been sent from Nadaun hospital and one from Rail hospital.

Patients are being treated and water samples have been collected and sent for examination. The reason behind the spread of diarrhoea will be known after the report comes in, he said.

Chief Medical Officer (Hamirpur) RK Agnihotri said that efforts are afoot to provide proper treatment to the people who have fallen ill.

District Health Officer Sanjay Jagota has advised the people to drink boiled water till the disease is controlled and said that Chlorine tablets were also being distributed to ensure the cleanliness of the water sources from where the water is supplied to these villages.

The Asha workers are also going door-to-door collecting details of the patients and instructing them to take precautions.

Ilam Din, a member of Rangas Panchayat, said that he started getting calls from villagers on Saturday morning and it seems that more than 150 people are suffering from stomach-related diseases.

Similar complaints are also being reported from the adjoining Kandrola panchayat.

Fandi Khan, former deputy head of Rangas gram panchayat, said the number of patients could be more. The condition of the elderly people there is bad and no team of the health department has reached the area.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, who is also the MLA from Naudan, has directed the district administration and the health department to take proper care of the patients and ensure that there was no shortage of medicines and other items.

Iraq sentences 14 people to death for mass killings of soldiers in 2014

    [ad_1]

Baghdad: An Iraqi court has sentenced 14 terrorists to death over the mass killings of about 1,700 soldiers when the Islamic State (IS) had seized Tikrit, the capital of Salahudin province, in 2014.

“The Central Criminal Court issued a verdict to execute the 14 terrorist criminals after establishing that they were involved in the Speicher massacre,” the Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council said in a statement.

In June 2014, armed Sunni terrorists, spearheaded by IS group, launched a surprise offensive on Iraqi security forces and captured a large part of the country’s northern and western territories after government troops abandoned their posts and military equipment.

Reports said that some 1,700 soldiers who walked out of an air base, known as Camp Speicher north of Tikrit, were abducted and killed by the IS.

The terror group later posted videos and photos showing its militants loading dozens of soldiers onto trucks, forcing them to lie face down and opening fire on them.

Some were shown being dragged to the edge of the Tigris River and thrown into the water after being shot in the heads.

People insulting ‘great men’ of sanatan tradition are ‘anti-India’: Ramdev

    [ad_1]

Haridwar: Yoga guru Ramdev on Thursday said many people are making controversial remarks against “great men” of sanatan tradition and termed them as “anti-India”.

“Insulting remarks are being passed by many people against great men associated with the sanatan tradition… They are all anti-India and acting at the behest of international forces by showing disrespect to the country. They should be strongly opposed,” Ramdev told reporters in reply to a question about self-styled godman and Bageshwar Dham chief Dhirendra Krishna Shastri.

However, the yoga guru admitted people were being misled in the country in the name of miracles.

“People are being misled in the name of miracles. India respects physical reality. There is no place in its culture and religion for hypocrisy. But one cannot deny that if there is a physical science there is a spiritual science too,” he said after hoisting the national flag at Pantanjali Yogpeeth here.

Targeting Pakistan, he said it is on the verge of bankruptcy and will soon be divided into four parts with the POK, Sindh and Balochistan merging with India which will become a super power.
