Tehran: The Iranian court has sentenced two people to death in connection with an attack on a shrine in the southern city of Shiraz in October 2022, which claimed the lives of at least 15 people injuring 40 others.
The two men had been found guilty of charges including “spreading corruption on earth” and acting against national security, said the head of the judiciary in Fars province Kazem Mousavi, according to Mizan News.
Mohammad Ramiz Rashidi and Sayed Naeem Hashim Qatali, who received the death sentence, were “directly involved in arming, supplying, and directing the main perpetrator of the terrorist attack” on the shrine of Shah-e-Cherag on October 26, 2022.

Three other defendants in the case were sentenced to 5, 15, and 25 years in prison for being members of ISIS.
Earlier, the main perpetrator of the attack Hamid Badakhshan, died of the injuries sustained during the arrest.
The armed attack on the Shah-e-Cherag shrine came as the Islamic Republic was rocked by unrest that erupted after the September 16 killing of Mahsa Amini in the custody of the country’s morality police.
SRINAGAR: Former chief minister of erstwhile J&K state and National Conference (NC) vice president, Omar Abdullah on Saturday said that the present government in J&K is not for the people, but to appease the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
Reacting to the Conman from Gujarat arrested in Srinagar, Omar while addressing a gathering in Kulgam said that it is the worthlessness of the present government, who was busy appeasing the fake conman from Gujarat.
According to the news agency KNO, he alleged that it is the fourth such incident, adding that it has been heard that three have already left for their places.
“How worthless this government is. The conman was given security, chaired meetings of officers, and also visited the Line of Control in Uri. Without confirmation from the PMO office, the administration was busy appeasing the conman. This government is not for the people, but to appease PMO,” he said, adding that this is the difference between the present government and the elected government. (KNO)
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said the success of India’s democracy and its institutions is hurting some people and that is why they are attacking it, in an apparent swipe at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his criticism of the state of democracy in the country.
When the country is full of confidence and resolve, and intellectuals of the world are optimistic about India, talk of pessimism, showing the country in poor light and hurting the morale of the country also takes place, he said at the India Today Conclave.
“When something auspicious is happening, there is a tradition to apply ‘kaala tika’, so when so many auspicious things are happening, some people have taken the responsibility to apply this ‘kaala tika’,” Modi said, without naming anyone.
His remarks come amid a political slugfest over Gandhi’s remarks during his recent visit to the UK, with the BJP accusing him of maligning India on foreign soil and seeking foreign intervention.
Modi said India has shown the world democracy can deliver.
He said, “The success of India’s democracy and its institutions is hurting some people and that is why they are attacking it.”
Modi said he is confident that despite such attacks, the country will move forward to meet its objectives.
Targeting the Opposition, Modi said scams used to make the headlines earlier but now the “corrupt” joining hands over action against them is making news.
The world is stating that this is India’s moment and this has been made possible because of the change of promise and performance in the country, Modi said.
The prime minister said all governments worked according to their abilities and got results according, but his government wanted new results and worked on a different speed and scale.
“Today India is the fastest growing economy in the world, it is the number one in smartphone data consumers, it is the second biggest mobile manufacturer and has the third biggest startup ecosystem,” he said.
Leading economists, analysts and thinkers of the world are saying in one voice that it is India’s moment, the prime minister said.
“For the prisoners, it’s good. For the country, it sucks,” said Eddy Acevedo, a Republican former Capitol Hill staffer who has helped craft U.S. policy on Nicaragua over the past seven years. “Ortega just deported his whole opposition. What happens if this gets replicated in other countries?”
The U.S. will keep on or possibly intensify the pressure campaign on Nicaragua, maybe adding new sanctions, say Biden administration officials. Yet America is struggling to protect and promote democracy not just in Nicaragua but across Latin America. Democracies in Peru and Brazil have wobbled. Relations with Mexico are strained. These diplomatic challenges for Washington come at a time when China and Russia, its chief global rivals, are making in-roads in the region.
“We’re already seeing a troubling drift toward authoritarianism and deliberate attacks on democratic institutions in Nicaragua’s neighbors, such as Guatemala and El Salvador,” said Rebecca Bill Chavez, a former Defense Department official in the Obama administration.
Nicaragua is a test case. Washington has devoted a lot of effort both to weaken and sway the Ortega regime, but has come short of its goals — a situation likely being watched by others in the region.
Some of the prisoners now released in America are urging the Biden administration to keep up the pressure on the dictatorship they hope to weaken from abroad.
“We were not the most important part of the story,” said the newly freed Juan Sebastian Chamorro, a former Nicaraguan presidential candidate. “The most important part of the story is that there are no liberties in Nicaragua. There’s no freedom. There’s no democracy.”
A bad relationship turns toxic
U.S.-Nicaragua links began unraveling more than a decade ago as it became clear that Ortega — a former rebel who fought another Nicaraguan dictator — wouldn’t leave the presidency. Relations worsened over the past five years as Ortega and Murillo strengthened their grip.
The Trump administration imposed economic sanctions and other penalties, mainly targeting individuals such as Murillo, in 2018, a year when the regime brutally cracked down on widespread protests.
In June 2021, Secretary of State Antony Blinken told his Nicaraguan counterpart that the United States could ease up on those penalties if Nicaragua were to move back toward democracy and improve its human rights record. (Abuses such as torture and extrajudicial executions in Nicaragua may constitute crimes against humanity, a U.N. investigative panel said earlier this month.)
Blinken’s message failed to sway the ruling power couple. Over the next few months, Ortega and Murillo imprisoned more dissidents ahead of an election.
The U.S. responded by slapping sanctions on a Nicaraguan state-owned mining company and banning visas for hundreds of Nicaraguan officials and their relatives. Biden also issued orders in October that authorized his administration to impose future sanctions on various economic sectors in Nicaragua, as well as trade and investment.
This was a major threat because it would, effectively, circumvent a trade deal between the United States, Nicaragua and a number of other countries. The United States is Nicaragua’s largest trading partner.
A no-brainer operation
On Jan. 31, Murillo called U.S. Ambassador to Nicaragua Kevin Sullivan and urged him to get in touch with the foreign ministry for a matter that could improve ties.
Ten days later, the 222 prisoners landed in the Washington area. According to three U.S. officials familiar with the issue, Nicaragua demanded nothing in return.
Biden aides saw taking the prisoners as a humanitarian no-brainer — so non-controversial that it was largely handled at the assistant secretary level, according to a senior National Security Council official. Biden was kept apprised throughout, a second senior NSC official said. The NSC officials, like other U.S. officials quoted, were granted anonymity to describe sensitive diplomatic matters.
Multiple U.S. departments were involved in the logistics, including screening the prisoners for security risks and preparing mental health services for those who might need them. They rejected a handful of people on the original list of 228. Two people, including Catholic Bishop Rolando Alvarez, declined to go to the United States.
Biden administration officials knew that Ortega and Murillo could benefit by putting distance between themselves and their rivals. But the opposition hadn’t been able to do much inside Nicaragua because all the key figures were in prison.
One of the prisoners described being awakened by guards in the early morning on Feb. 9 and told to dress and be ready in 10 minutes. The prisoner and fellow detainees then boarded buses with windows covered by bars and wood. They were told to keep their heads down and mouths shut.
Toward the end of the road trip, guards on the bus handed the prisoners papers to sign. It was dark and some prisoners were reluctant to sign a document they could barely see. The guards told them that if they didn’t sign, they wouldn’t be able to leave the country. That was the first clue many prisoners had that they could soon be free.
Once the prisoners were let off the buses, they saw they were on the tarmac of the airport, next to a massive plane. “We saw a box on the tarmac that had the passports of all of us — new Nicaraguan passports,” said the former prisoner, who was granted anonymity to protect their family in Nicaragua. “This was quite an operation.”
Searching for rifts
The prisoner release could be a sign of dissension within the ruling ranks. A video said to be from late December appeared to show Ortega and Murillo parting after a disagreement, spurring ongoing speculation about a rift between the pair. After the release of the prisoners to the United States, Ortega appeared to suggest the idea came from his wife.
Reports last spring that Laureano Ortega, the child thought most likely to succeed the ruling couple, had reached out to U.S. officials about sanctions relief also led to questions about potential tensions within Nicaragua’s elite. This all comes amid speculation that Daniel Ortega’s health is failing and a lack of clarity about how loyal his supporters are to his wife.
Ortega and Murillo were once leaders in the Sandinista rebel movement, helping topple the dynastic autocracy of Nicaragua’s Somoza family. Today, they have turned into what they once loathed, their critics say.
After revoking the citizenship of the exiled dissidents, at least one of whom also has American nationality, Nicaragua’s government also stripped 94 other people of their Nicaraguan passports. Many of the latter are activists living outside the country.
Limits of U.S. power
The regime’s recent actions prompted countries such as Spain, Argentina and Chile to offer citizenship to those affected. U.S. officials, meanwhile, argued the regime squandered the goodwill it had gained by freeing the prisoners.
Still, America’s options in Nicaragua are limited.
Increasing sanctions pressure could damage Nicaragua’s economy and worsen the migration crisis in the hemisphere.
Ortega and Murillo have other potential options for international support — Russia and China. The regime supports Russia’s war in Ukraine and has permitted Moscow to place troops and military equipment on its soil. In late 2021, Nicaragua switched its diplomatic recognition away from Taiwan in favor of Beijing, in a sop of the Chinese.
Hawkish figures such as former Trump administration national security adviser John Bolton have called Nicaragua, Cuba and Venezuela the “troika of tyranny” because of their repressive rule. The United States has taken particularly harsh measures toward each, with little success.
The Cuban communist regime has survived decades of U.S. sanctions. Biden has yet to embrace a brief diplomatic flowering of relations with Havana that began under then-President Barack Obama but was ended by then-President Donald Trump.
The Venezuelan regime of Nicolas Maduro, too, has weathered years of sanctions and other U.S. pressure. A U.S.-backed opposition effort to overthrow Maduro has largely fizzled in the past six months, and the dictator appears secure.
Some of the former Nicaraguan prisoners already are in touch with each other, looking at uniting around a common platform to oppose Ortega and Murillo from exile. “This is one of the mistakes Ortega made — he made us closer,” said Chamorro, the former presidential candidate.
Yet diaspora-led opposition movements are rarely successful, noted Christopher Sabatini, a Latin America analyst with Chatham House.
Such campaigns “don’t command the resources, they don’t command diplomatic legitimacy … they’re often very fractious,” Sabatini said. Inside Nicaragua, “there’s not going to be a popular uprising that unseats Daniel Ortega at this point. There can’t be. There’s no one to lead it.”

Moscow: Russia on Friday termed plans by NATO members Poland and Slovakia to send their Soviet warplanes to Ukraine attempts to dispose of antiquated equipment.
“This is another example of how a number of NATO member states, including Poland, are raising their direct involvement in the conflict,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said during his Friday press briefing, in a response to the recent announcements that Warsaw and Bratislava would send Soviet-designed MiG-29 warplanes to Kiev, RT reported.
It would not affect the outcome of Russia’s military operation but instead “may lead to additional suffering for Ukraine itself and its people”, he added.
“It seems like these countries (Poland and Slovakia) are just disposing of old equipment they no longer need,” Peskov said. The MiG-29 was designed in the 1970s and entered service in the 1980s.
Warsaw’s plan to transfer four of the MiG-29 fighters to Kiev “in the next few days” was announced by Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki earlier this week. This makes Poland the first NATO country to pledge warplanes to Ukraine. The country has 28 MiG-29s, but it is unclear how many of them are in working condition, as the country has sought to update its air force with US- and South Korean-made fighters.
Slovakia, also a NATO member, similarly announced on Friday that it would send 13 of its MiGs to Kiev. However, the jets were retired last year, and several reports suggested that they were mostly not in operational condition.
Ukraine has been requesting warplanes, specifically American-made F-16s for its military, but US President Joe Biden said in January that they were not planning to send any over. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz similarly stated the same month that Berlin was not even discussing transferring its own F-16s.
French President Emmanuel Macron has sounded more vague, saying in January that he would not rule out sending fighter jets to Ukraine. UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced in February that London would be training Ukrainian pilots, adding that there was still no decision on actually sending Western-made fighter jets to Kiev.

New Delhi: RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on Friday underlined the Vedas’ acknowledgement of various paths undertaken by people to realise the spiritual truth and asserted that the world needs this understanding at this time of conflicts.
Speaking here at the release of Urdu and Hindi translations of the Samveda, one of the four Vedas which are regarded as foundational texts of Hinduism, Bhagwat said different people may have different modes of worship but what should be realised is that the goal is the same.
One should not fight over different means and this is the message which is relevant for all and is something that India has to offer to others, the top functionary of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) said.
In his speech, Bhagwat quoted various parables sourced to ancient texts to stress that the same truth can be perceived differently by different people.
The one who guides all is known by different names, he said, underlining the need for interfaith harmony.
“Methods (of worship) and paths could be different, but destiny is the same. Look at destiny and move towards it. Don’t fight with each other over methods. This is the message that India has to send out to the world,” Bhagwat said.
Citing a story, the RSS chief said various persons can approach the top of a mountain using different paths. While they may believe that others have taken the wrong way, the one on the top can see that everybody is climbing towards the same goal, he said.
“The world needs to understand this truth. All over the world, there is discord between humans. There is discord between humans and nature as well. Humans have invited this crisis and the solution is in their hands. They will have to change the way they think,” Bhagwat said.
The Urdu and Hindi translations of Samveda have been done by film writer and director Iqbal Durrani, who has been associated with various big-budget Hindi movies, especially in the 1990s.
Speaking at the event, Durrani said Dara Shikoh, the eldest son of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, had translated various scriptures into Persian and wanted to translate Vedas also but did not survive to do so.
“What could not be done them has been done today during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s regime with me translating Samveda… Aurangzeb lost today and Narendra Modi ji won,” he said.
Senior RSS leaders Krishna Gopal, Ram Lal and Indresh Kumar and others from Sangh attended the event.
Actors Suniel Shetty, Mukesh Khanna, Jaya Prada, Gajendra Chouhan and singer Anoop Jalota were also present at the event along with other dignitaries including religious leaders from different faiths.

SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah on Thursday said the NC is the only party striving for the restoration of statehood and fundamental rights of people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Addressing a one day workers convention at Aarigam, Khansahib in Budgam Omar said that it was imperative for workers to strengthen JKNC, which he asserted was the only party working to stop the caravan of BJP.
He further said that if people are happy with exorbitant taxation, soaring unemployment and demolition drive, then they should vote for the BJP. “If you want an end to unemployment, anti people, anti JK actions, then you should strengthen NC on ground.
“While other parties, the A and B teams have accepted the decisions of August, 2019, it’s NC which is striving for the restoration of our people’s pride, their land, cultural, democratic, constitutional and fundamental rights,” he said.
Governments actions, he said are light years away from healing the wounds of people. “The lands which were given to people by Sheikh sahib are being snatched away. Our resources, Jobs being out sourced,” he said.
Questioning the government claims of ushering in employment extravaganza in JK, he said what was claimed is not visible on ground. “Where are those thousands of jobs? Where is that promised investment? All the promises have ringed hollow and miserably failed to live up to it’s hype. Not even a day passes, when one or the other selection list ends up in a scandal.”
“As far as tourism sector is concerned, we had vacated the meadows from security forces, since then their has been no headway in bringing the area on the tourist map of region and country,” Omar said adding, “Locals wouldn’t benefit in wake of such process. Had government given them easy loans for establishment of restaurants, and hotels, the economic condition of the area would have been different. However nothing has been done to improve the economic condition of my brothers and sisters living around the meadow.”
