Cyberabad police bust gang involved in stealing data of 16.8cr people

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Cyberabad police on Thursday claimed to have busted a gang that was allegedly involved in stealing and selling confidential personal data of 16.8 crore citizens in the country, and sensitive data of government and important organisations.

The police arrested seven persons operating from Noida and Pune involved in theft, procuring and selling sensitive and confidential data.

The gang was also allegedly selling key data of defence and Army personnel to cyber criminals.

Cyberabad Police Commissioner Stephen Ravindra announced the arrest of the accused individuals at a news conference. He said they would write to the Home Ministry for further inquiry in the data theft case.

The accused were found selling information relating to more than 140 categories of people including defence personnel, bank customers, energy sector consumers, NEET students, government employees, gas agencies, high net worth individuals, demat account holders.

Other categories include Bengaluru women consumer data, data of people who have applied for loans and insurance, credit card and debit card holders (of AXIS, HSBC and other banks), WhatsApp users, Facebook users, employees of IT companies and frequent flyers.

“When any individual calls the toll-free numbers of JustDial and ask for any sector or category related confidential data of individuals, their query is listed and sent to that category of service provider. Then these fraudsters call those clients/ fraudsters and send them samples. If the client agrees to purchase, they make payment and provide the data. This data is further used for committing crime,” said the commissioner.

The gang allegedly operated through registered and unregistered companies Data Mart Infotech, Global Data Arts and MS Digital Grow.

Sensitive data of 2.5 lakh defence personnel containing their ranks, email ids, place of posting, etc was found available those accused.

Data of 1.1 customers of six banks, 1.2 crore WhatsApp users, 17 lakh Facebook users, and 35,000 employees of the Delhi government was accessed by the fraudsters.

The accused had also accessed data of 98 lakh people who had applied for credit cards.

“The sensitive data can be used for unauthorised access to important organisations and institutions. The data of defence and government employees can be used for espionage, impersonation and commit serious offences which may jeopardise national security. The data related to PAN cards can be used to commit serious offences. The data is being used to commit a large number of cybercrimes by gaining confidence with victims by disclosing the information,” Stephen Ravindra said.

Key accused Kumar Nitish Bhushan had established a call centre in Noida and collected credit card databases from another accused, Muskan Hassan.

Pooja Pal and Susheel Thomar were working as tele-callers at Bhushan’s call centre.

Atul Pratap Singh had collected data of credit card holders and sold it on a profit basis through his company “Inspiree Digital”.

Muskan, who previously worked as a tele-caller at Atul’s office, established her company “MS Digital Grow”. She was selling data as a mediator. She had arranged the data from Atul and sold it to Bhushan.

Sandeep Pal had established Global Data Arts and used Justdial services and social media platforms to sell customers’ confidential data to fraudsters indulging in cyber offences.

Seventh accused Zia Ur Rehman was providing bulk messaging services for promotions and also shared the database to Atul and Bhushan.

Does Congress want complete freedom for Rahul to abuse people: BJP

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The BJP Thursday asserted that the law will take its course if Rahul Gandhi abuses people and slammed the Congress over its criticism of his conviction in a defamation case, asking whether the opposition party wants “complete freedom” for him to “abuse” others.

BJP leader and former law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad hit out at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge for questioning the court’s order by reportedly noting that several judges hearing the matter were changed.

Making such comments show that the party does not believe in the judiciary, he said and asked, “Does it want to keep even the judiciary even in its pocket.”

Asked whether Rahul Gandhi will be disqualified from the Lok Sabha, Prasad said it is for Speaker Om Birla to decide.

A court in Surat in Gujarat on Thursday sentenced Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to two years in jail in a 2019 criminal defamation case filed against him over his “Modi surname” remarks.

The case was filed against Gandhi for his alleged “how come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname?” remarks on a complaint lodged by BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi.

Prasad said Gandhi insulted people with Modi surname with his comments, asserting that it is very much defamatory. His lawyers argued before the court before the verdict was given, he said, noting that a similar case against the Congress leader is also proceeding at a court in Patna filed by BJP leader Sushil Modi.

Prasad accused Gandhi of insulting people by citing their caste.

In a swipe at Gandhi for his comments after the conviction that he believes in truth and non-violence, he asked if this means insulting people by targeting them for their surname.

“Does Congress want Rahul Gandhi to have complete freedom to abuse people? There is rule of law in the country and it will prevail,” he said, alleging the former Congress president has a history of making defamatory comments and unfounded allegations.

“The law of India has it that if an individual or an organisation has been defamed with scurrilous statements, scandalous comments, abuses or any defamatory remarks, then he has a right to seek redress. But the Congress party has an objection. It wants complete freedom for Rahul Gandhi to throw abuses,” Prasad said.

Connect with people during Ramzan: Telangana Congress’ minorities dept asks cadre

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) minorities department chairman Shaik Abdullah Sohail on Wednesday directed the district units of the department to intensify their activities in view of forthcoming Assembly elections.

He was addressing the Quarterly Review Meeting with Chairmen of all district units and State office bearers at Gandhi Bhavan on Wednesday. He said that AICC minorities department chairman Imran Pratapgarhi and Telangana in charge Farhan Azmi have directed that all district units should actively participate in the Congress party’s programmes especially the ongoing Haath Se Haath Jodo Yatra across Telangana.

Abdullah Sohail asked the party cadre to connect with the people during the holy month of Ramzan. He also asked them to compile district-wise information about minority candidates who were denied subsidised loans, 2BHK units, pensions and other benefits by the BRS Govt. He said that the Congress party would approach all those candidates and aspirants who were deceived by BRS Govt in the last 9 years.

“In the first tenure, BRS government received loan applications from 1.54 lakh jobless youth. But it did not provide them with a single rupee. Those applications were later thrown in a dustbin. More than 2.16 lakh jobless youth applied for loans when fresh applications were called recently. With a budget of just Rs 120 crore, BRS Govt could give loans to lucky 12,000 applicants through a draw of lots. The remaining ‘unlucky’ candidates will get nothing. Congress party will meet those ‘unlucky’ candidates to tell them that their luck got infected after BRS came to power. In order to change their luck, they must change the government and bring Congress party back to power,” he said.

Similarly, Congress activists would meet the applicants of the 2BHK scheme to expose how BRS government ‘cheated’ them. “We will also give an assurance that they will be provided housing after Congress party comes to power in the next elections,” he said.

Abdullah Sohail said that the minorities department of the Congress party would focus on nearly 40 minority-concentrated seats, including 15 seats in the Hyderabad district. He said it has been decided to fill all the posts in the organization in the next month and an aggressive campaign would be launched immediately after Eid-ul-Fitr.

The Congress leader also announced that the TPCC minorities department would launch a series of chargesheets highlighting the failures of the BRS Govt in minorities’ welfare. He said that the first chargesheet was likely to be released by this month’s end.

    Qatar

    Egypt

Egypt’s ministry of foreign affairs spokesperson tweeted on Monday, “The statements of the Israeli Minister of Finance regarding the denial of the existence of the Palestinian people are inflammatory and unacceptable because they carry racist gestures that deny the facts of history and geography, and fuel feelings of anger and congestion among the masses of the Palestinian people, and even the peoples of the free world and those with living consciences around the world.

The Israeli minister’s remarks came after a five-way meeting hosted by the Egyptian city of Sharm el-Sheikh and included Egypt, Jordan, Israel, Palestine and the United States, and ended with announcing “the need to achieve calm on the ground and prevent further violence.”

These developments come at a time when tensions have escalated sharply across the occupied West Bank in recent months, amid repeated Israeli military raids on Palestinian towns.

  • BJP schemes emerge from Bureaucracy, Congress’ from the people: Rahul Gandhi

BJP schemes emerge from Bureaucracy, Congress’ from the people: Rahul Gandhi

    [ad_1]

Wayanad: Taking a dig at the BJP government at the Centre, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said the previous UPA government’s ambitious programmes such as the rural job guarantee scheme emerged from the people, whereas the Narendra-Modi-led dispensation’s schemes were formulated by bureaucrats.

Gandhi criticised the ‘centalised’ rule of the BJP-led government, comparing it with that of the former UPA governments. Citing the MGNREGA scheme, which he said had been formulated based on people’s inputs during UPA rule, he claimed that the present government’s demonetisation decision came from Modi’s mind and was implemented without consulting the people or the banking system.

He said this while interacting with the Congress-led UDF’s representatives of the local bodies in this hill district, at Kalpetta.

While responding to a question from one of the participants, Rahul said, “I completely agree with you. A lot of schemes are done in a centralised manner, and they are actually not effective because panchayat participation in designing the scheme and thinking about the scheme is not there.

“If you look at the Congress party schemes, like MNREGA, and you compare them to BJP schemes, you will find that the Congress party schemes emerged from the people, from the panchayats, and the BJP schemes emerged from the bureaucracy,” the Wayanad MP claimed.

Gandhi then went on to elaborate about the launch of the MNREGA scheme, telling people how the idea emerged from a district in Maharashtra and how it was later conceptualised as a national scheme and expanded to the remaining parts of the country.

“MGNREGA emerged from the people of India. People demanded work, and the government responded to that idea. And it took many years for the scheme to be developed after talking to many, many different stakeholders. It was the scheme that emerged from the people of India. It was the wisdom of the people of India that created MGNREGA”, Gandhi said.

He alleged that Modi had ridiculed MGNREGA, but was forced to expand the scheme himself when the country faced the COVID-19 crisis.

“When COVID came, this same Prime Minister, who was ridiculing MNREGA, was forced to expand MNREGA….

“When the Prime Minister came up with the idea of demonetisation, it came from his mind. He did not consult the people of India. He did not even consult the banking system,” the Congress leader said.

During his interaction with the office bearers of local bodies, Gandhi also discussed developmental issues on the ground and matters related to the buffer zone for forests, human-animal conflict, waste management issues, and concerns regarding MNREGA.

The representatives also raised issues regarding the reduction in fund allocation by both Central and State governments, to which Rahul said he had been raising these issues on many occasions both with the Centre and state.

  • BJP Not Ready To Face People, Delaying JK Elections: Omar Abdullah

BJP Not Ready To Face People, Delaying JK Elections: Omar Abdullah

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah on Tuesday said that BJP is delaying elections and shying away from facing people because it wasn’t able to live upto the hype on providing jobs, and ushering in development.

“The post 2019 chapter in both Jammu and Kashmir provinces has been marked by job losses, economic slump and outsourcing of contracts. So me people were e very happy on the abrogation, but their happiness was short lived. Everyone is suffering, right from traders to job aspirants, employees to agriculturalists, traders to miners, contractors to manufacturers. People are suffering from a plethora of issues all at the same time but the government is completely blind to their plight.” Omar said

Omar while addressing a rally at Nagrota, Jammu said that the public gathering has proved that NC is the only credible voice of people, having deep rooted and credible footprints across Jammu, Pir Panjal, Chenab and Kashmir regions.

In his address, Omar said, “Today’s function has refuted the notion that there is no hide and hair of NC in the plains of Jammu and that NC was only existent in Kashmir. Again people have rejected such false propaganda and showed how deep rooted NC is across all the regions of JK. It’s not an individual, who the people support, but the vision and mission of the party that the people connect to.”

Omar said that Jammu and Kashmir despite having cultural and geographical differences are connected by the widespread feeling of despondency. People are anxious; no one knows when a new order will be issued dispossessing them of their rights,

Lamenting the government on its failure to script a promised turnaround in four years since the decisions of August 05, 2019, he said, “It was said that NC was responsible for JK people’s woes. What good have they achieved now? Where are those promised jobs? Where is the much touted development? Leave alone coming up with job orders, they are not able to come up with selection lists.”

He said that the government is not thinking in terms of helping people but frightening them. Parading of newly purchased bulldozers meant for demolition, he said, was a case in point.

“After drawing much slack on the issue, the central government had asked the incumbent JK government to put hold on the headless demolition. But the local administration didn’t stop there, it came up with imposition of property tax on the houses, which it wasn’t able to demolish. It was told that the measure isn’t meant to gather revenue. If the purpose behind the measure was not to generate revenue, then why was the tax imposed in the first place. It means that the measure was only meant to intimidate people,” he said.

  • Hyderabad’s L V Prasad Eye Institute wins Global Recognition; it has served 34.14 million people so far

Hyderabad’s L V Prasad Eye Institute wins Global Recognition; it has served 34.14 million people so far

    [ad_1]

In the din of politics, cricket and films a unique achievement of an Indian eye care Institution at the global level got swept into the background or virtually went unnoticed in the country.

The L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI), Hyderabad has been ranked 8th globally in the area of Ophthalmology for 2023 by Scimago agency, a Spanish global ranking organisation. The ranking is based on research, technology innovation and social impact of the research output.

It’s significant to find LVPEI in the company of reputed Institutions like Johns Hopkins, Harvard University, Moorfields of London in the top 10 list. The LVPEI is the first Indian medical institute to find place in the top rankings in the field of research productivity.

Scimago Agency analysed data for the past 5 years of the best medical institutions to arrive at the 2023 rankings. The list is headed by Moorfields Eye Hospitals NHS Trust (UK), Johns Hopkins Medicine (US),   Singapore National Eye Centre, University of Miami Health System (US), Singapore Eye Research Institute, UCLA Health System, (US) and National Institutes of Health (US) and LVPEI (India). The next two are: US Dept of Health & Human Services and Institute National de la Sante et de la Recherche Medicare (France).

    A snapshot of achievements

In the last 35 years, since it’s starting in 1987 by Dr Gullapalli N Rao, the LVPEI has been making steady progress in both-providing top class eye care with social impact and undertaking research and introducing latest technology to stay among the best eye care institutions in India and worldwide.

A quick look at some of the key achievements of the Institute: approximately 34.14 million patients served so far. Of them 16 million were served free of cost. About 56,759 personnel trained. The Institute scientists/researchers have 4099 publications; 57 PhDs; 5 Bhatnagar Award winners and 3 Padma Sri awardees.

To expand its reach the LVPEI has set up a few satellite centres. Through them, it has been able to reach 12,193 villages. Overall, it has performed 1.93 million surgeries, 2029 stem cell based procedures, reached 4.92 million children and established a Cornea Bank with 1.19 lakh corneas of which 69, 964 transplants have been done, according to the Institute.

Asked about the significance of the ranking by the Spanish Agency, Dr Prashant Garg, the Executive Chair of the LVPEI said, “The announcement came as a pleasant surprise to us. It was heartening because we were told that the ranking was based on our consistent performance and impact that our research was making on society.”

The global recognition also corroborates the vision of the founder, Dr G N Rao on placing the highest importance to research right from the beginning along with eye care. Annually, the Institute has been publishing an average of 400 research papers.  Consequently, the LVPEI has been intensely focused on world class eye care with research, innovation and social impact as the driving forces, he said.

The institute has also been active in inter-disciplinary collaboration with global institutes. In this context it is pertinent to note that the LVPEI has been helping the Government of Liberia, Africa, in establishing eye care facilities, training Ophthalmologists and skilled technicians and guiding in the creation of both resources and manpower to run a good network to meet the country’s needs in the long term. The African continent has the lowest capabilities in eye care at present.

The LVPEI has established the entire range of eye care facilities in Hyderabad. It tries to be always ahead of the curve in bringing the best technology to its patients in myopia or stem cell therapy. Along with the Arvind Eye Hospital, Shankara Netralaya and the Rajendra Prasad Ophthalmology Institute, it is amongst the top few in the country.

Referring to the future areas of research work with an eye on social impact, Dr Garg said, “We have studied the new opportunities and needs of the region and identified 3-4 broad areas. These include: elderly eye care, inherited eye diseases, eye and the brain linked issues, applications of machine learning.” In addition, a major project is on in Odisha to study the unique eye problems of the tribals, he explained.
