PM Modi greets Bangladesh on eve of Eid-ul-Fitr; wishes for peace, harmony worldwide

Dhaka: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday greeted his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina on the eve of the Eid-ul-Fitr, wishing peace, harmony, good health and happiness for the people across the world, a statement from the premier’s office here said.

Modi also praised Hasina, saying that as a result of her personal initiative the multilateral partnership-based relationship between India and Bangladesh transformed into a “role model of neighbourly relations” in the world.

“On behalf of the people of India, I convey my Eid greetings to you and the people of Bangladesh,” Modi said in his message to Prime Minister Hasina.

Extending his greetings on behalf of India, Modi wished for peace, harmony, good health and happiness for the people of the two countries and across the world.

The Indian prime minister said that he looked forward to continuing work with Hasina to take the bilateral relations to “new heights.”

Bangladesh is set to hold general elections in late December 2023 or early January 2024, months ahead of the elections in India.

Prime Minister Modi noted that during the holy month of Ramzan, Muslims around the world performed fasting and prayers and “on this auspicious occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, the people of the world along with the Muslim Ummah are realising the values of unity and brotherhood”, the statement said.

Bangladesh authorities said the country would celebrate the festival on Saturday in line with the Arabic lunar calendar since the moon, marking the start of the Shawwal month, was sighted this evening.

  • Peace returns to old city, thousands converge at Jamia Masjid, observe ‘Laylat-al-Qadr’ in Srinagar

Peace returns to old city, thousands converge at Jamia Masjid, observe ‘Laylat-al-Qadr’ in Srinagar

    [ad_1]

Srinagar, April 21: Thousands of people from different parts of Kashmir converged at Jamia Masjid in Srinagar’s old city to observe ‘Laylat-al-Qadr or the Night of Power’ earlier this week.

It was for the first time in the past three years the authorities allowed night-long prayers at Srinagar’s grand mosque.

One of the holiest nights in Islam falls between the nights of 26-27 of Ramzan passed off peacefully. No untoward incident was reported and devotees offered prayers in peace.

Pertinently, until 1990 thousands of people converged at Srinagar’s grand mosque every Friday and on occasions like Shab-e-Mehraj, Shab-e-Baraat and Shab-e-Qadr to offer congregational prayers.

However, after the Pakistan-sponsored insurgency broke out in J&K in 1990, separatists and militancy hijacked this important religious centre to preach separatism and sedition.

People in large numbers coming to the grand mosque for congregation prayers provided separatists with a readymade audience to deliver anti-national sermons to appease their masters in the neighbouring country.

The three-decade-long Pakistan-sponsored militancy in J&K saw henchmen of separatists’ orchestrating protests and stone-pelting around Jamia Masjid.

Frequent disruptions led to a decline in the number of people visiting the grand mosque. Many shopkeepers closed down their establishments due to uncertainty and chaos.

It may be recalled that in 1990, Hizbul Mujahideen militants murdered Kashmir’s chief cleric, Mirwaiz Mohammad Farooq at his residence at Nageen in Srinagar outskirts.

The cold-blooded murder of the late Mirwaiz was carried out at the behest of Pakistan.

The message was clear that Srinagar’s grand mosque would be controlled by the hardliners and anyone opposing the move will have to face the consequences.

In June 2017, when the son of the late Mirwaiz Moulana Mohammad Farooq, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was delivering a sermon on the revered night of ‘Laylat-al-Qadr’ an unruly mob lynched, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, Mohammad Ayub Pandit and stoned him to death outside the historic Jamia Masjid at Nowahata.

DySP Pandit was posted outside the mosque during ‘Shab-e-Qadr’ and was doing his duty standing at the access control of the mosque when he was attacked and killed.

The brutal murder of the police officer evoked widespread condemnation from every section of society.

J&K Police later arrested the accused persons who led the attack to lynch DySP Pandit.

In December 2018, a group of masked young men stormed into the Jamia Masjid with ISIS flags and created a ruckus.

The incident occurred after the Friday congregational prayers.

The group carrying ISIS flags barged into the mosque and rushed to the pulpit. One of them stood atop the pulpit with his shoes on, shouting slogans.

Till August 5, 2019 – when the Centre announced its decision to abrogate J&K’s special status and bifurcate it into two Union Territories – Srinagar’s grand mosque was considered to be the citadel of the separatists.

Chairman of his faction of the so-called Hurriyat Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who also heads the Anjuman Auqaf Jamia Masjid (managing committee of the grand mosque), acted as a spectator and couldn’t do much to uphold the integrity of this historic religious institution.

Kashmir-based politicians, who ruled Jammu and Kashmir after 1990, made half-hearted attempts to stabilize the situation as they didn’t want to annoy Pakistan and their stooges in the Himalayan region.

After 2019 the security agencies tightened the noose around the anti-national elements. A massive crackdown was launched to nab the henchmen of Pakistan stooges in the old city.

These elements are used to lure the youngsters by offering them Rs 500 to pelt stones on the security personnel and disrupt normal life.

Efforts put in by Jammu and Kashmir Police and the paramilitary forces have yielded results.

The participation of thousands of people in “Shab-e-Qadr (Night of Power)’ recently is ample proof of the fact that peace has been established in the volatile old city of Srinagar.

Ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr this year markets around Jamia Masjid are abuzz with activities and people are thronging the area without any fear of getting caught in stone-pelting or facing any harassment at the hands of miscreants.

Peace has returned to Srinagar’s old city. The government has succeeded in restoring the pristine glory of the 610-year-old grand mosque, which can accommodate more than 33,000 people at one time.

The Jamia Masjid known for its peaceful and tranquil ambience is glittering again.

The message is loud and clear that no one in J&K would be allowed to use religious centres for promoting vested interests. People converge at religious places to seek solace and pray in peace, and they are least interested in politics. In the past three years, Srinagar has changed.

Its youth have given up the path of violence. No one is being arrested for indulging in stone pelting as no stone pelters are left. Militancy is on its last legs with the number of terrorists falling below the 70-mark.

The beginning of the end of the Pakistan-sponsored proxy war has commenced.

J&K residents are heaving a sigh of relief in the militant and tension-free atmosphere.

Peace returning to the old city is an indication that the era of bloodshed is over and a new dawn has broken out in Jammu and Kashmir.–(ANI)

  • UN hails progress in Yemen peace talks between Saudi, Omani delegations

UN hails progress in Yemen peace talks between Saudi, Omani delegations

    [ad_1]

Sanaa: A UN spokesperson said that talks between Saudi and Omani delegations and the Houthi militia in Yemen’s capital Sanaa were “a welcome step towards the de-escalation of tensions” in the war-torn nation.

At a briefing in New York, Stephane Dujarric, the chief spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, fielded queries from reporters regarding reports of advancements made towards a lasting ceasefire, which would bring an end to Saudi Arabia’s military involvement in a military coalition that has backed the internationally recognised government in its civil conflict with the Houthis, since 2015, reports Xinhua news agency.

Neighbouring Oman has been involved in peace talks with the warring parties in Yemen, running in parallel with UN efforts, led by Special Envoy Hans Grundberg, who Dujarric said was continuing to “explore options to extend and expand” a UN-brokered six-month truce, which expired last October.

    MS Education Academy

According to Grundberg’s statement last week, the truce is “largely holding” even after expiration, while many elements remain in place.

The envoy said that greater humanitarian relief, a nationwide ceasefire and a sustainable political settlement “that meets the aspirations of Yemeni women and men” was essential, through a process that brings all stakeholders together.

Dujarric said that the discussions in Sanaa were “very much welcomed by the Secretary-General” and added that Grundberg continues to be “in close coordination with the regional member states” over resuming the political process, with the hope of avoiding any escalation in the long-running war.

The spokesperson noted that the UN had not been involved in the talks in the Houthi-controlled Yemeni capital.

“We are not involved in every discussion, we don’t need to be,” he said.

“What is important is that all of these parties work towards the relevant Security Council resolution, the UN facilitated talks, and all signals are, that they are. But we will have to take things one day at a time.”

News reports suggested that progress in the Oman-mediated talks and brightening prospects of a peace deal for Yemen added to the momentum provided by the resumption of diplomatic ties between Saudi Arabia and Iran, in a deal brokered by China.

Since the conflict between the Saudi-led coalition and Houthi rebels escalated in 2015, tens of thousands have died, millions have been displaced, and aid agencies assisted nearly 11 million each month last year, with lifesaving aid, amid what remains one of the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.

Rapprochement with Saudi to positively impact on regional peace, stability: Iran

    [ad_1]

Tehran: The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman has said that the resumption of diplomatic relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia will have positive impacts on regional peace, stability and security.

Making the remarks at his first press conference in the current Iranian calendar year, Nasser Kanaani said on Monday that the Beijing-brokered agreement between Iran and Saudi Arabia to normalize ties has met with “very positive reactions” in the region, and welcomed at the international level, Xinhua news agency reported, citing a report by Iran’s official news agency IRNA.

The agreement would definitely have positive impacts on strengthening regional cooperation, so as to foster peace, stability and security in the region, as well as on boosting trade and economic relations not only between Iran and Saudi Arabia but also with other regional countries, Kanaani noted.

    MS Education Academy

Meanwhile, he said that Iran and Saudi Arabia will exchange ambassadors after the reopening of their diplomatic missions.

China, Saudi Arabia, and Iran announced on March 10 that the latter two had reached a deal that includes the agreement to resume diplomatic relations and reopen embassies and diplomatic missions within two months.

In a meeting in Beijing on Thursday, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and his Saudi counterpart Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud signed a joint statement announcing the resumption of diplomatic relations with immediate effect.

Saudi Arabia cut diplomatic ties with Iran in 2016 in response to the attacks on Saudi diplomatic missions in Iran after the kingdom executed a Shiite cleric.

UP: 4 held for disturbing peace outside mosque during Ram Navami procession

    [ad_1]

Mathura: Four men were arrested for disturbing the peace outside Jamal Masjid during a Ram Navami procession here in Uttar Pradesh, a police official said Friday.

On Thursday, when a procession being carried out by the Ram Janma Mahotsav Samiti from the Ram temple located in the Ghiyamandi area, reached the Chowk Bazar intersection, some miscreants who were riding a van climbed on the roofs of shops built outside the mosque and hoisted saffron flags there. • Biden to mark Good Friday peace deal in 5-day Irish trip

Biden to mark Good Friday peace deal in 5-day Irish trip

    [ad_1]

Press play to listen to this article

    Voiced by artificial intelligence.

DUBLIN — U.S. President Joe Biden will pay a five-day visit to both parts of Ireland next month to mark the 25th anniversary of the U.S.-brokered Good Friday peace accord, according to a provisional Irish government itinerary seen by POLITICO.

The plans, still being finalized with the White House, have the president arriving in Northern Ireland on April 11. That’s one day after the official quarter-century mark for the Good Friday Agreement, the peace deal designed to end decades of conflict that claimed more than 3,600 lives.

With Irish roots on both sides of his family tree, Biden has long taken an interest in brokering and maintaining peace in Northern Ireland. He has welcomed the recent U.K.-EU agreement on making post-Brexit trade rules work in the region — a breakthrough that has yet to revive local power-sharing at the heart of the 1998 accord.

According to two Irish government officials involved in planning the Biden visit itinerary, the president will start his stay overnight at Hillsborough Castle, southwest of Belfast, the official residence for visiting British royalty, as a guest of the U.K.’s Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Heaton-Harris.

Then he’s scheduled to visit Stormont, the parliamentary complex overlooking Belfast, at the invitation of its caretaker speaker, Alex Maskey of the Irish republican Sinn Féin party.

That could prove controversial given that, barring a diplomatic miracle, the Northern Ireland Assembly and its cross-community government — a core achievement of the 1998 agreement — won’t be functioning due to a long-running boycott by the Democratic Unionists. That party has not yet accepted the U.K.-EU compromise deal on offer because it keeps Northern Ireland, unlike the rest of the U.K., subject to EU goods rules and able to trade more easily with the rest of Ireland than with Britain. Nonetheless, assembly members from all parties including the DUP will be invited to meet Biden there.

The president is booked to officiate the official ribbon-cutting of the new downtown Belfast campus of Ulster University. During his stay in Northern Ireland he also is expected to pay a visit to Queen’s University Belfast, where former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton serves as chancellor.

Next, the Irish government expects the presidential entourage to cross the border into the Republic of Ireland, potentially by motorcade, the approach last adopted by Bill Clinton during his third and final visit to Ireland as president in 2000.

This would allow Biden to pay a visit to one side of his Irish family tree, the Finnegans, in County Louth. Louth is midway between Belfast and Dublin. Biden previously toured the area in 2016 as vice president, when he met distant relatives for the first time and visited the local graveyard.

In Dublin, it is not yet confirmed whether Biden will deliver a speech at College Green outside the entrance of Trinity College. That’s the spot where Barack Obama delivered his own main speech during a one-day visit as president in 2011.

A White House advance team is expected in Dublin this weekend to scout that and other potential locations for a speech and walkabout. He isn’t expected to hold any functions at the Irish parliament, which begins a two-week Easter recess Friday.

Members of Ireland’s national police force, An Garda Síochána, have been told by commanders they cannot go on leave during the week of April 10-16 in anticipation of Biden’s arrival. The Irish expect U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken to accompany the president and take part in more detailed talks with Northern Ireland’s leaders.

Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar plans to host the president and Blinken at Farmleigh House, a state-owned mansion previously owned by the Guinness brewing dynasty, inside Dublin’s vast Phoenix Park.

The final two days of Biden’s visit will focus on the other side of his Irish roots, the Blewitts of County Mayo, on Ireland’s west coast, which he also visited in 2016. Distant cousins he first met on that trip have since been repeated guests of the White House, most recently on St. Patrick’s Day.

White House officials declined to discuss specific dates or any events planned, but did confirm that Biden would travel to Ireland “right after Easter.” This suggests an April 11 arrival in line with the Irish itinerary. Easter Sunday falls this year on April 9 and, in both parts of Ireland, the Christian holiday is a two-day affair ending in Easter Monday.

    Jonathan Lemire contributed reporting.
