Twitter now tells advertisers to pay for verification or they can’t run ads

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: After removing all legacy Blue check marks and asking individual users to pay for being verified, Elon Musk-run Twitter on Friday asked advertisers to either pay for the verification or they will not be able to run their ads on the platform.

Social media consultant Matt Navarra shared the letter sent by Twitter to advertisers, which read that starting April 21, “your account must have a verified checkmark or subscribe to either Twitter Blue or Verified Organisations to continue running ads on Twitter.”

“Business accounts spending in excess of $1,000 per month already have gold checks or will soon, and they’ll continue to enjoy access to advertising without interruption at this time,” the company posted.

    MS Education Academy

The company said it aligns with the broader verification strategy to elevate the quality of content on Twitter and enhance experience as a user and advertiser.

“This approach also supports our ongoing efforts to reduce fraudulent accounts and bots. Subscribing to either of these services means you have been verified by Twitter as a real person and/or business,” said the micro-blogging platform.

Navarra tweeted: “Twitter is now telling advertisers it MUST subscribe to Twitter Blue or Verified Organisations to continue running ads!”

Twitter had told businesses to pay $1,000 per month for retaining gold badges and brands and organisations which do not pay the money will lose their checkmarks.

The Musk-run company, which is busy monetising its platform via various means, will also charge an extra $50 per month to add badges to each account affiliated with the brand, The Information reported recently.

Earlier, all legacy verified accounts lost their Blue badges, creating chaos on the platform all over the world. Several celebrities lost their Blue check marks.

Telangana tribals pay tributes to Indravelli martyrs

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Rich tributes were paid to tribals who were killed in police firing while fighting for their rights 42 years ago at Indravelli in Telangana’s Adilabad district.

Aboriginal tribals or Adivasis and leaders of different political parties paid homage to martyrs at the martyrs’ column in Indravelli on Thursday.

It was on this day in 1981 that 13 tribals were killed in a police firing when they had gathered at Indravelli for a protest on a call given by Andhra Pradesh Raithu Coolie Sangham to fight for their land rights.

    MS Education Academy

The police had opened fire when a constable was allegedly killed by an angry mob.

According to official records, 13 tribals, all Raj Gonds belonging to surrounding villages of the Indravelli mandal centre, were killed in the firing. However, rights groups had put the death toll at 60.

Till a few years ago, the tribals were not allowed to hold meetings in Indravelli to pay homage to the martyrs.

Adivasis, members of Indravelli Amaraveerula Ashaya Sadhana Samithi and the Tudum Debba, a tribal rights organization, offered floral tributes in a traditional manner on Thursday.

Adilabad Member of Parliament Soyam Bapu Rao, Mulugu MLA Seethakka and YSR Telangana Party leader Y.S. Sharmila paid tributes at the martyrs’ column.

Seethakka tweeted that Indravelli Adivasi heroes are immortal. She called Indravelli a place of inspiration. “Many lost their lives to get our land, & freedom back still we are fighting for our lands & freedom, we remember the fighters & I pray for their souls to get peace,” she wrote.

Sharmila said she paid tributes to the martyrs of Indravelli who laid down their lives fighting for land rights and against the exploitative system.

She said it was another Jallianwala Bagh.

“We will continue to fight for tribal rights with the spirit of martyrs,” she said.

  • Air India pilots’ unions reject proposed pay structure, warn of industrial unrest

Air India pilots’ unions reject proposed pay structure, warn of industrial unrest

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: In a major development, the Indian Commercial Pilots Association (ICPA) and the Indian Pilots Guild (IPG) of Air India have rejected the new pay structure proposed by the airline.

The primary bone of contention is the reduction in flying allowance from 70 hours to 40 hours every month under the new structure, which the pilots believe is unfair.

The two unions have warned of possible ‘industrial unrest’ if the management goes ahead with the new terms without their consent. While Air India has stated that it will “continue to engage with the remainder of its staff”, the airline has taken a tough stance on the issue, saying that there are “no recognised unions in Air India”.

    MS Education Academy

This is the first wage revision offered by the Tata group-owned Air India since its takeover last year, and it will affect all 3,000 pilots across its four airlines – Air India, Air India Express, Air Asia India, and Vistara.

The pilots’ unions have instructed their members to reject the new employment conditions and wage structure offered by the management.

An agreement has been put in place for the employees to sign by April 25, but the two unions have stated that they will contest the terms and conditions, with their pilots refusing to sign the revised employment and compensation terms.

The two unions have warned of potential industrial unrest if the company takes any coercive or victimising action against their members.

In a joint statement, the unions stated that the company reiterated that “all previous understandings, representations and agreements of whatever nature that have been entered into with us are null & void and that the company further has the right to change any terms and conditions”.

“The term cost to the company for an assumed flying of 70 hrs is deliberately misleading and creates an impression of a generous compensation and accompanying benefits package. The actual guaranteed money being offered is only for 40 hrs. Effectively, any time a pilot is on leave or is unavailable due to recurrent training requirements or document/licence renewals, not to mention any sick leave, there is an automatic pay cut involved,” the statement read.

“The so-called rationalisations of allowances is not in line with any industry practices as projected by HR. Further, blanket consent is sought for any leave or insurance policy that the company may come up with & which is subject to amendment or outright withdrawal.

“Suffice it to say that this is not an all-inclusive list but merely a selection of some of the most outlandish and labour-hostile provisions that we have come across to date. This is dishonourable and how the management is trying to force it down the employees’ throats is outright unethical,” it added.

“Nor has the blatant attack on our rights as workmen to bargain collectively or seek legal redressal for any injustice or victimisation gone unnoticed. Where is the company requirement all of a sudden to forcibly promote almost all the permanent workmen of the union to the so-called Senior Commander management cadre? It is clear from all this that there is a concerted effort to gut the unions and isolate pilots into individual boxes where they can be exploited and victimised at will by the HR department,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, Air India’s spokesperson has defended the new compensation structure, which includes parity among different groups, recognition of managerial and supervisory roles for experienced pilots, and individual contracts sent to pilots and cabin crew for necessary paperwork.

“The managerial and supervisory role played by the experienced pilots is also being recognised in the form of designating them as Senior Commander as also offering them a special monthly allowance. The contracts reflecting these enhancements were individually sent to the pilots and cabin crew for necessary paperwork,” said the spokesperson.

The spokesperson also claimed that a large number of pilots and cabin crew have already accepted the new contracts, and the salary improvements and advancement opportunities they enable.

“The airline will continue to engage with the remainder of its staff through this process as currently there is no recognised union in Air India,” the spokesperson said.

  • Pollution by textile printing industries: NGT directs Rajasthan to pay Rs 100 cr compensation

Pollution by textile printing industries: NGT directs Rajasthan to pay Rs 100 cr compensation

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The National Green Tribunal has directed Rajasthan to pay an interim compensation of Rs 100 crore for damage to the environment, including pollution of the Dravyavati river, caused allegedly by textile printing industries in the Jaipur district.

The NGT also formed a 10-member joint committee to plan and oversee remedial action and said the compensation amount has to be utilised for restoration of the environment.

The NGT was hearing two petitions claiming violation of environmental norms by the industries which adversely impacted the water quality of the river.

    MS Education Academy

A bench of chairperson Justice A K Goel noted a report by a panel constituted earlier and said it presented a “dismal picture” of the area. The industrial siting was faulty, most industries were located in the non-conforming areas and industrial effluents were being discharged into the Dravyavati River and Chandalai and Nevta dams.

The bench, also comprising judicial member Justice Sudhir Agarwal and expert members A Senthil Vel and Afroz Ahmad, said industrial operations had caused damage to the feeder canals, the river and dams, and the report did not mention the groundwater quality of Dravyavati river.

“There is no assessment of damage to soil and agriculture. The Dravyavati River restoration project costing Rs 1,676.93 crores lacks a holistic approach in absence of information about water quality and the degree of treatment required by sewage treatment plants (STPs)/ common effluent treatment plants (CETPs) and the report does not mention progress of formulation and execution of action plan for Sanganer critically polluted area,” the bench said.

It said the state of affairs was “utterly unsatisfactory” and it appeared that there was “no environmental rule of law in the area”.

“This calls for emergent action in a mission mode at a higher level to remedy the situation and to fix accountability for such failure of the administration in collusion with law violators,” the bench said.

It said higher authorities in the state have to rise to the occasion to protect the environment and public health instead of being “mute spectators as appears to be unfortunately happening”.

The green panel said, “We consider it appropriate to fix interim compensation of Rs 100 crore to be paid by the state of Rajasthan by way of deposit in a separate account, with the liberty to recover the amount from the violating units and erring officers.”

Directing the deposit to be made within two months, the tribunal said the amount had to be utilised for restoration of the environment in the area as per a plan which may be prepared.

The tribunal fixed the compensation for the damage to the environment in terms of deterioration in water quality of Dravyavati River, Chandalai and Nevta Dams, damage to soil and agriculture by trade effluents, non-functional CETP, inadequate functional STPs, violation of Hazardous Other Wastes (Management and Transboundary Movement) Rules and extraction of groundwater without permission.

The compensation was also fixed in terms of the estimated rough cost of remediation “on the most conservative estimate” and a rough estimate of the financial capacity of around 1,000 violating units and the cost of management of sewage.

The tribunal also constituted a 10-member committee headed by the state’s Chief Secretary for planning and overseeing remedial action in the interest of protection of the environment and upholding of rule of law.

“The committee may meet within two weeks and prepare an action plan and such action plan be executed within the shortest possible defined time frame to prevent further degradation of the environment by closing all non-compliant units and evolving mechanism for assessment and recovering compensation preferably within three months ,” the tribunal said.

Directing the panel to submit an interim action taken report within three months, the tribunal posted the matter for further proceedings on July 18.

  • Abortion pill manufacturer to pay $765K to U.S. to settle suit over incorrect labeling

Abortion pill manufacturer to pay $765K to U.S. to settle suit over incorrect labeling

    [ad_1]

    abortion pill 90085

Under the settlement dated March 31 and released last week, Danco agreed to pay $765,000 to the U.S. to resolve allegations that, from 2011 to 2019, the company failed to both properly label imports of the drug as originating in China and pay customs duties on imports lacking those labels.

Under the deal, Danco denied the allegations leveled by the Life Legal Defense Foundation in a lawsuit filed in a Sherman, Texas, federal court back in January 2021. However, the drugmaker said it was settling to “avoid the delay, uncertainty, inconvenience, and expense of protracted litigation,” according to the agreement.

The DOJ’s April 12 press release about the settlement names Danco, but does not mention the now high-profile abortion drug at the center of the dispute, mifepristone.

“Danco is committed to operating ethically and legally and reaffirms that this case did not concern the safety or efficacy of Danco’s product,” the company said in a statement. “The settlement allows Danco to continue to focus on providing high quality, safe, and effective medication to women in the United States.”

Life Legal, a Napa, Calif.-based nonprofit group that opposes abortion, brought its suit under whistleblower provisions of the False Claims Act. That allows third parties to file challenges on behalf of the U.S. government and claim between 15 percent and 30 percent if the action is successful.

Life Legal will receive approximately $116,000 from Danco’s payments to the Justice Department over the next roughly nine months, according to the settlement.

In a particularly awkward provision for Danco, which was specifically founded to ease access to medication abortion by distributing mifepristone in the U.S., the drug firm agreed to pay over $46,000 directly to the anti-abortion organization to cover its legal fees and costs related to the suit.

The suit was filed nine days after Joe Biden was sworn into office in January 2021, seemingly setting up a showdown between a president who supports abortion rights and the drugmaker. In accordance with federal law, the complaint was kept under seal while the government investigated. A judge unsealed portions of the records earlier this month.

Last week, the Justice Department and Danco asked the Supreme Court to preserve access to mifepristone after a lower court suspended FDA approval of the drug. Justice Samuel Alito issued a short-term stay while the court considers the request.

  • BJP to pay a heavy price for rebellions, Amul-Nandini controversy

BJP to pay a heavy price for rebellions, Amul-Nandini controversy

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: The Karnataka BJP unit is upbeat about its chances in the May 10 assembly elections. The saffron party has gone one step ahead in replicating the Gujarat model in the state by allotting 52 tickets to new candidates in the first list and denying tickets to seven sitting MLAs in the second list.

Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has stated that the opponents are already shivering after seeing the list of candidates. Sources said that this was much needed in the interest of the party. However, it is posing a serious challenge to the BJP as the dropped MLAs are rebelling, especially the senior leaders who have vowed to prove themselves by joining hands with political rivals of the BJP.

Sources in the party said that the leaders have been told by the high command not to worry about the rebel candidates and they will take care of the situation. The campaign blitzkrieg of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has been planned in such a way that the state would be swamped by a saffron wave.

    MS Education Academy

However, the controversy surrounding the Amul and Nandini brands has dented the image of the party ahead of the polls. First it was an allegation of Hindi imposition on curd packets. The central agency withdrew it after facing a backlash not only in Karnataka, but in other south Indian states also.

When things seemed to be settling down, the BJP delivered another issue on a silver platter to the opposition by beginning to sell Amul milk and curd packets directly in Karnataka.

The Opposition and Kannada activists came out on the streets to protest the move. Soon, the issue was linked to the survival of the farmers who depend on selling milk to the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF). The BJP which initially ignored the agitation against Amul, later tried to control the damage by explaining how steps are being taken to strengthen the KMF and the Nandini brand.

The Opposition Congress and JD (S) used the controversy to reach out to the people of the state and successfully created suspicion about the BJP merging the Nandini brand with Amul.

The party is also dealing with the rebellion of its leaders, following the release of the first and second list of candidates. Controversial leader K.S. Eshwarappa was asked to retire from electoral politics. The party denied a ticket to former deputy CM Lakshman Savadi while former CM Jagadish Shettar’s ticket is yet to be announced. According to sources the high command is not interested in him.

Senior BJP leaders former deputy CM R. Ashoka and Minister V. Somanna have been given challenging tasks. They will take on Karnataka Congress president D.K. Shivakumar and Opposition leader Siddaramaiah respectively.

The party has managed to rein in Eshwarappa. Lakshman Savadi has declared war on the BJP and will most likely join the Congress. Jagadish Shettar is waiting for his ticket in the third list and he is claiming that he will talk after getting some clarity. The high command had summoned him to Delhi and managed to contain him.

The party has taken a major decision to check the anti-incumbency factor in the coastal Karnataka districts. It is fielding six new faces in place of the sitting MLAs. Six-time MLA and minister S. Angara has resigned from the primary membership of the BJP following the development. Veteran BJP leader Halady Srinivasa Shetty had also announced his retirement.

The BJP is presently facing a rebellion in more than 20 constituencies. BJP sitting MLA from Udupi constituency Raghupathy Bhat who missed the ticket stated that he came to know about the denial of a ticket from the media. This was not the way to treat a senior leader like him, he added.

Former minister Goolihatti Shekar, sitting MLA from Belagavi North Anil Benake, former minister Sogadu Shivanna, MLC R. Shankar who were denied tickets have given clear hints of joining hands with the opposition parties. The party has also not announced a ticket for former minister and senior BJP leader S. Ramdas from Mysuru district.

Tamil Nadu BJP president Annamalai, who is touring the state, has stated that according to him the BJP would win 150 seats in Karnataka. Tejasvi Surya, Bengaluru South MP and BJP Yuva Morcha national president, has stated that the BJP is the only party to groom party workers into leaders. Stalwarts such as Yediyurappa and Halady Srinivasa Shetty have set standards to accommodate future candidates and it shows how different the BJP is when compared to other parties.

Tejasvi Surya has also stated that the BJP has given prominence to new faces. It is to be seen how the BJP’s experiment will work for the party in the assembly elections.
