A pair of dress, passport is all we have, say Indian returnees from Sudan

    [ad_1]

Chennai: With all her money and valuables taken away during the conflict in Sudan, Divya Rajasekharan who arrived from the African country, said she lost all hopes of returning to Sudan.

“A pair of dress and passport is all that I have now,” she said displaying them at the airport here on Thursday afternoon after she was flown to Chennai from the national capital.

Divya, among the first batch of 9 Tamils who were evacuated from the conflict-hit Sudan under Operation Kaveri, said the image of Sudan that she cherished during eight years of her life in that country took a steep plunge since the last 15 days.

“We thought that the war would end in a couple of days but our miseries increased from the third day,” she said accompanied by Sophia from Vellore. Her house was located close to the office of the para-military head. “My car, dollars, and other valuables were taken away and on the eighth day of the conflict we became nomads,” she said narrating her ordeal.

Fortunately, the Indian embassy got in touch with her and other Indians living in similar conditions and evacuated them to New Delhi.

While four who were from Madurai left directly for their hometown, five from Chennai and Vellore were flown to the airport here.
“Now I have to start my life from scratch. I have no hopes of returning to Sudan,” Divya who hails from Madipakkam, here, said and thanked the central and state governments for their valuable help in rescuing them.

“We managed with curd rice and pickles but later got stranded without food and water. I am pregnant… It was at this juncture, the Indian embassy officials contacted us and advised us to reach the outskirts to remain safe till we were taken to port Sudan,” Sophia said.

Rajasekharan was shocked to see the military forces banging on his door. Anticipating trouble if he did not open, Rajasekharan mustered courage and opened the door. “I was asked if I was Indian. They assured that they would not harm us. They asked for food, water, and money and took our car away,” the IT professional said.

For its part, the State government set up control rooms at the Tamil Nadu House in Delhi and at the Commissionerate of Rehabilitation and Welfare of non-resident Tamils, Chennai, to facilitate the rescue operation.

Those from the State stranded in Sudan or their relatives could contact the Commissionerate on phone number: 9600023645 or mail to nrtchennai@gmail.com, it said.

  • CID Denies Pressuring Litigants To Withdraw Passport Cases

CID Denies Pressuring Litigants To Withdraw Passport Cases

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Police has responded to recent media reports suggesting that its intelligence and counterintelligence wing is pressuring litigants to withdraw from the process of redressing their grievances through courts of law.

In a statement to Srinagar based news agency KDC, a spokesman for the Criminal Investigation Department said that the claims made were false, and an internal audit had been carried out to investigate the accusations. The police confirmed that officers would approach the aggrieved person to ascertain further details about who pressurized them and under what circumstances, so that a thorough inquiry could be conducted and suitable disciplinary action taken against the delinquent.

The J&K Police pointed out that the accusations were problematic because they denigrated public institutions designed to serve the public’s interest. The department emphasized that such false accusations harmed the community and appealed for people not to project personal grievances as public ones.

According to police statistics, in 2020, out of 77,686 passport verifications received, 77,644 (99.95%) cleared. In 2021, out of 75,714 passport verifications received, 75,176 (99.68%) cleared, and in 2022, out of 134,315 passport verifications received, 128,939 (99.61%) cleared.

The spokesman also highlighted the importance of security verifications preceding the issuance of passports, calling it a high-value public service. The police had detected 54 young boys who were wrongly given passport services during 2017-2018. All of them were taken to terrorist camps in Pakistan, trained in arms, ammunition, and explosives, and many were pushed back into Jammu and Kashmir through the Line of Control. Tragically, 26 of them died either while crossing or during encounters in the hinterland.

The CID was able to bring 12 of these young boys back under preventive custody to prevent terrorist-separatist syndicates from pressuring them to join terror ranks. The boys have now been reunited with their families and are happily living with them. Unfortunately, 16 of them are still trapped in camps under the control of hostile agencies.

Police investigations confirmed that in each case, the visa to Pakistan was arranged at the behest of one or the other leader of a constituent party of Hurriyat. The J&K Police is committed to helping the parents of vulnerable young person’s not fall prey to the death traps.

J&K Police reassured the public that they are committed to speedy and hassle-free clearance for those who are “clean and green.” They also stressed the importance of professional filtering of those who should be prevented from availing the service, both in their own interest and in the interest of the public.

  • Indian Citizen, Not A Terrorist: Iltija Mufti On Passport

Indian Citizen, Not A Terrorist: Iltija Mufti On Passport

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Iltija Mufti, the daughter of the PDP President Mehbooba Mufti, has been granted a two-year UAE-specific passport. The move comes after her previous passport expired on January 2, 2022, and her application for a new one was denied due to an adverse report by J-K Police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID). After receiving the passport, Iltija questioned whether she was being labelled as a terrorist or anti-national. She is determined to fight for her rights and says that she is an Indian law-abiding citizen and not a criminal. The incident has raised concerns about the misuse of power and the denial of fundamental rights to citizens.

In February, she moved the Jammu and Kashmir High Court, which directed the Regional Passport Office (RPO) to look into the merits of the case. The RPO issued the passport to Iltija, who wants to pursue higher studies, that is valid from April 5, 2023, to April 4, 2025, according to a letter by the RPO to the additional solicitor general. Iltija accused the Regional Passport Officer, Kashmir, Davinder Kumar, and the CID of misleading the judiciary during a press conference at the PDP headquarters.

“The passport issued to me is a two-year passport and it is mentioned clearly that it is valid only for the UAE,” Iltija stated and characterized the passport she received as a “conditional passport.” She affirmed that she is an “Indian citizen and a law-abiding citizen” who has not violated any laws. “However, even to issue the two-year passport, the Official Secrets Act has been invoked against me. This Act is usually invoked for espionage,” Iltija claimed.

“Am I a fugitive? Am I Nirav Modi, am I a terrorist, anti-national that I am being punished? If I talk about the central government, is it like talking against the country? What is my fault?” she questioned. “I am not a fugitive or a conman like Kiran Patel who was treated as a VVIP,” Iltija said. Patel was detained in Kashmir last month for allegedly impersonating an official of the Prime Minister’s Office.

The daughter of the PDP leader claimed that she is being treated like a hardened criminal and “like I have taken thousands of crore of rupees as loans from banks and have become a defaulter.” She insisted that she would persist in her legal battle despite “pressure to withdraw her petition.”

Iltija questioned the validity of the passport issued to her, saying, “The Deputy Solicitor General (of India) (Tahir Majid) Shamsi has asked the court to dismiss my petition as a passport has been issued to me. But, what passport is this?” She accused the CID of playing a role in criminalizing passport issuance in Kashmir at the behest of the Centre and claimed that she is being deprived of her fundamental right to travel abroad. She also alleged that she is being punished because of her mother’s political background and not because she has violated any laws. Iltija further stated, “What is my fault? If this is happening to me, you can imagine what is happening to common Kashmiris.”

Iltija claimed that the passport issued to her was a conditional passport, which is not given to even fugitives. She accused the regional passport officer of flouting the Passport Act and violating his duties. She said, “Legally, you have to let me know, you are answerable to me as to why a conditional passport was issued to me. Am I involved in some Hawala scam, or money laundering?”

She also questioned the CID’s submission of an adverse report in a sealed cover and the invocation of the Official Secrets Act. She said, “If you are so confident about your report, then why did you have to invoke the Official Secrets Act? Why do you not want the document to come out in the public domain?”

Iltija alleged that the government wants to make an example out of her family to stop people from raising their voice. She accused the CID officers of bringing “disgrace and disrepute” to the department and harassing the people of Kashmir. She said, “The CID here has only job that is to harass and persecute the Kashmiris.”

When asked if she would continue to pursue the matter in court, Iltija alleged that there is pressure on her lawyer to withdraw the petition. However, she said that she would not withdraw her petition because it was not only her fight, but of others who have been deprived of their rights. She said, “There is tremendous pressure on us to withdraw this petition, but I will continue to fight it in the court, and I have full faith in the honourable judiciary that they will issue this passport.”
