  • Bennie Thompson: ‘I chose Liz Cheney over party’

House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) on Thursday subpoenaed a former prosecutor who worked in the Manhattan DA’s office — a move Bragg characterized as an “attempt to undermine an active investigation” and “an unprecedented campaign of harassment and intimidation.”

None of this is a surprise to Thompson, the ranking member of the Homeland Security Committee.

“I expect nothing less from my colleagues on the other side,” Thompson said during an exclusive interview with POLITICO for The Recast Power List 2023.

“I’ve been in Congress almost 30 years and I’ve never seen a congressional committee attack a state official who’s doing his job. Basically crossing the line – from Bennie Thompson’s standpoint – intimidating an official not to do his job.”

In an 845-page report, Thompson’s own committee concluded at the end of last year that there is enough evidence for the Department of Justice to convict the former president on charges including obstruction of an official proceeding and assisting and providing aid and comfort to an insurrection.

In the interview, Thompson weighed in on the allegations that the myriad investigations Trump is at the center of — including two headed by special counsel Jack Smith at the DOJ and one by the Fulton County, Georgia District Attorney — are politically motivated. He also talked about why he opened the Jan. 6 hearings by connecting that attack to America’s long history of racism and slavery and explains the flak he received for picking former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) as the committee’s vice chair.

This transcript has been edited for length and clarity.

Booker: I want to jump into our conversation starting with what happened in Manhattan (this week) seeing the former president into a Manhattan courthouse and be charged with 34 felony counts in connection to a hush money payment to silence a porn star. I want to get your overall thoughts about what this says about where we are in our quest to uphold American democracy.

Rep. Thompson: Well, I think the best phrase that we hear from some circles is: It proves that no one is above the law. In America, you can be president of the United States, but you are tasked with the responsibility of the rule of law, and when you don’t do that, you’re subject to the penalties and other things that are associated with it.

So I allow that process to work itself [out]. Clearly, a group of citizens, in the form of a grand jury, heard evidence and ultimately made a decision to come forth with indictments. Now we’ll look at our system of justice in this country to see if, in fact, Donald Trump will be proven guilty or innocent.

Booker: I just want to note that the former president pleaded not guilty to all the charges. Now, obviously, the Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, has to convince a jury that Mr. Trump committed these alleged crimes. But, as someone who worked on the January 6th committee, are these legal proceedings of a former president, someone who is a leading candidate on the GOP side, good for American politics? You’ve talked about nobody’s above the law, but certainly there are allegations being levied on the right that all of these investigations, these legal probes, are politically motivated.

Rep. Thompson: Well, I expect nothing less from my colleagues on the other side.

Donald Trump is the titular head of the [Republican] Party. They have a fundamental right to defend that individual, and that’s what they’re doing. My concern is, in defense of it, they’re attacking the rule of law, and the rule of law in this country is clear. We have separation of powers in our Constitution.

I’ve been in Congress almost 30 years and I’ve never seen a congressional committee attack a state official who’s doing his job. Basically crossing the line — from Bennie Thompson’s standpoint — intimidating an official not to do his job.

    I think that’s unfortunate.

The other thing associated with the comment is my work on January 6th.

Some of the conversation and vitriol that we’re hearing, we heard before January 6th. It’s very dangerous language. So before January 6th, people would say, “Oh, this would never happen in the greatest democracy on Earth.”

    Well, it did.

And it happened because there were certain forces at work. Those forces were orchestrated — based on the work of our committee — by, at that time, the President of the United States and some other individuals.

I would think that our committee made the case. We utilized primarily people who worked in the administration, people who identified with the party of the administration, but they chose patriotism and democracy over party. I thank them for that.

But even with that, some of the individuals who are talking now are very critical of people in their own party for coming forth. This is our great democracy, we have an opportunity to speak our opinion, but sometimes we have to be cautious of what we say because others are listening, others are watching, and they, in many instances, interpret it a different way.

Booker: Well, let me just follow up on this one point here. A CNN poll out this week indicated that 60 percent of those surveyed said they approved of the Trump indictment.

But when broken down by race, 75 percent of those who identify as a person of color approved of the indictment, versus just 51 percent of white respondents who said they approved of this indictment.

Why do you think there’s such a wide gulf in how white Americans and how people of color view this indictment of the former president?

Rep. Thompson: Well, one of the things I’ve experienced over my political career is there’s a fundamental belief by the majority of African Americans that they actually believe in our system of government. They believe in the rule of law. So whatever it is that they have to do to demonstrate it, they do it on a regular basis.

When elections go wrong, the majority of the Black people who lose elections don’t act like Donald Trump and his people. They basically will go to court. If they lose, then they’ll get their act together and come back next election.

Donald Trump has taken losing an election to the worst level possible, and that worst level is deny, deny, deny and, ultimately, … go into a system of violence.

I take myself, for instance. I’ve been in elective office for quite a while. When I first started, we had problems registering people to vote; we had problems having people go in polling places to help, even though it was the law. But at no point did we ever think about taking the law into our own hands. We made the law work based on what it said. And so I see that attitude right now in that CNN poll.

People of color really want this system of government to work for all the people. And so they will, by and large, defend it. But I see a lot of white Americans who are somehow intimidated because of this growing minority, and the language that Donald Trump is saying, and his supporters, that we have to “make America great again.”

Some of those code words are really creating havoc in the white community because of the gun laws that are being passed around the country. The underlying element in those gun laws is race. It’s not Second Amendment. It’s all about how we have to defend our communities, why we have to defend our schools, even though, by and large, those rationales for the defense are hollow.

And so I’m comfortable in saying, even in the south, racial bloc voting occurs more among whites than it does Blacks. Black people in the South have voted, historically, at a greater percentage for white candidates than white voters have voted for Black candidates. So we have made some of that adjustment, and I think that poll reflects the maturing of the attitudes in the Black community toward defending the system.

Booker: At The Recast, we focus on the intersection of race and identity and how it’s shaping American politics. Part of the reason why you were selected by a committee of my colleagues to be on this year’s Power List is how you placed race right at the center of the January 6th investigation.

In your opening remarks in the first committee hearing … I’m going to read your quote back to you just to get your reaction to it because it was so powerful, it stuck out to me.

You said: “I’m from a part of the country where people justify the actions of slavery, the Ku Klux Klan and lynching. I’m reminded of that dark history today as I hear voices today try and justify the actions of insurrectionists on January 6th, 2021.”

Please break down why you wanted to start the conversation about the investigations into the attack on the Capitol with race.

Rep. Thompson: Well, I think, as a country, we have to continue to reflect on our history.

Even though we are the greatest country in the world, there have been some issues associated with our growth and maturity that we can’t overlook. So to remind people of that history is important.

I think it was symbolic that an African American chaired the January 6th Committee, [whose] ancestors were brought to this country in the belly of ships, who for a number of years, toiled, building public courthouses and city halls all over this country for free, even our United States Capitol.

What happened on January 6th was that sole reminder that, even though we are the greatest country in the world, we have to maintain vigilance in keeping it … otherwise, the potential for what occurred on January 6th could very well happen again.

So I wanted to frame it [in that context and] I chose Liz Cheney as my vice chair. I didn’t have to. I could have picked anyone, but I think it was for the country. I chose Liz Cheney over party. And some of us, my friends, they took issue with it

    Booker: Really?

    Rep. Thompson: Oh, yeah, absolutely.

But it was, more or less, “Why did you do it? You were in charge. You could have done a lot of things,” and I said, “Well, this was more than party. This was country.”

And while my country has not always treated Bennie Thompson or my ancestors properly, I think there are some times you have to look beyond party and race to get to the next level, and so I’ve tried to do that.

But I can still be truthful in the process. I don’t have to gloss over it, just be straightforward, and so my opening comments, truthful, straightforward. Some people might not [have understood] the place of it, but you have to set the tone for the seriousness of your hearing, and I thought that went a long ways toward establishing the tone.

Booker: I wanted to ask a couple of questions since you are home in your district right now in the Jackson area. One, before the end of the year, Congress voted on an omnibus, allocating about $600 million to address the Jackson water crisis.

I’d like to get an update on that from you about how that is progressing. And last week, President Biden was in your state, touring the devastation from natural disasters. If you could, give me a brief update about how the recovery efforts are going in that regard.

Rep. Thompson: As most of you know, the Jackson water crisis was an ultimate culmination of a flooding event on our water system that really knocked out everything.

But, as we started to look at it, there was a history of lack of state support toward the largest publicly-owned water system in the state. Part of that was associated with the fact that Jackson had become a majority African American city. And so, over time, that neglect led to a system that could no longer be maintained.

The flood that occurred on that system, however, allowed us an opportunity to call on the federal government to help. We had a disaster declaration declared, and, ultimately, we looked at the omnibus disaster package. That provided money for wildfires in the West and flooding in the West also, as an opportunity to do the same thing for Jackson, Mississippi. And that’s what we did.

The initial installment is 600 million. Not enough. It’ll take several years to spend the money, but the system, pardon the pun, was on life support, so we’re working through it. But, in order to work through it, we established a third-party manager who will run that system, and we are in the process of going through that and I thank everybody for their support.

Unfortunately, 10 days ago, a tornado went through five counties in my district. We lost 13 in the city of Rolling Fork, Mississippi. We’re struggling. Those cities and counties, under the best of circumstances, were vulnerable. There’s no public transportation. In two of the counties, there’s no hospital. So we’re challenged in that respect, but our friends all over the country have stepped up. But there are still some vestiges of inequity.

One is, the white kids attend an all-white segregated academy. Believe it or not, some of the resources for the community were sent to that all-white segregated academy where Black folk don’t go, and so we had to turn that around.

The Biden administration has talked about equity and making sure that the response to whatever it is, education, housing, agriculture, is looked at through a colorblind lens. We fixed that.

Nitish Kumar hosts Iftar party in Patna

    [ad_1]

Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Friday organised an Iftar party in his official residence, 1 Anne Marg, here.

Several leaders including Deputy Chief Ministers Tejashwi Yadav, JD-U national President Lalan Singh, cabinet minister Jama Khan, JD-U state president Umesh Kushwaha, Water Resource Minister Sanjay Jha and several Muslim clerics participated in the event.

In the last few days, the opposition parties has targeted Nitish Kumar over Iftar parties, especially after the Ram Navami violence in Sasaram and Bihar Sharif. BJP and LJPR targeted Nitish Kumar after he went for the Iftar party of JD-U MLC Khalid Anwar in Phulwari Sharif in Patna recently.

Iftar parties in Bihar have significant political overtones. One such example was seen last year when RJD leader and Rabri Devi had given an Iftar party in her official residence 10 Circular Road in Patna, attended by Nitish Kumar, and subsequently political equation had changed in Bihar as he dumped the NDA to join the Mahagatbandhan again.

Rabri Devi will organise an Iftar party on April 9.

  • Rahul to blame for Congress’ present situation, Sonia’s writ runs no longer in party: Azad

Rahul to blame for Congress’ present situation, Sonia’s writ runs no longer in party: Azad

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: In a major revelation, former Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad on Wednesday termed Rahul Gandhi the main reason why he was no longer with the party.

Speaking after the launch of his memoirs “Azaad: An Autobiography”, Azad, a former Union Minister and J&K Chief Minister, lauded former party President Sonia Gandhi for working hard to strengthen the party and quipped that if Rahul Gandhi had even accomplished a “150th part” of this, then the party’s current fortunes would have been much better.

He stressed that a political party cannot run according to the whims of its leader, as he noted that he had worked with all the Prime Ministers of the Congress from Indira Gandhi to Manmohan Singh.

    MS Education Academy

Azad also stressed that the Union Cabinet, under Manmohan Singh, in 2013, should have stuck to its stand on the ordinance reversing the Supreme Court order on the automatic disqualification of a convicted lawmaker – which had been withdrawn after Rahul Gandhi had famously torn it up at a press conference, adding that the measure was still in place, he would have not been disqualified as an MP.

In a dig at Rahul Gandhi, he termed him the architect of his own misfortune.

Asked if Rahul Gandhi was the reason that he was no longer part of the Congress, with which he had spent almost all his political career before leaving last year and floating his own party, Azad candidly agreed.

He added that Sonia Gandhi’s writ still ran in the party, he would have never parted ways with it.

Azad also claimed that new Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge was not capable of taking any major decision on his own.

The veteran leader, who was part of the G-23 leaders that had written to Sonia Gandhi seeking widespread reforms in the party, including elections to the Congress Working Committee – its highest decision-making authority, said that he was against the party’s “nomination culture”.

He said that he had often raised the demand for holding elections to the CWC as well as block, district, and state-level units. These elections were held earlier, from the time of Indira Gandhi to P.V. Narasimha Rao.

Azad, who had praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his book, said that he was impressed by how Modi had treated him despite all their political clashes. Citing his time as Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, he said that he had attacked the Prime Minister on various issues like the abrogation of Article 370, CAA, and the hijab issue, but Modi never resented it.

On a possible linkup between his Democratic Azad Party and the BJP in Jammu and Kashmir, he avoided giving a direct anser, saying there were not permanent friends or enemies in politics.

He said that he was not the leader of a regional party but always championed a national agenda.

  • With an ‘arraignment party,’ Trump jolts his campaign

With an ‘arraignment party,’ Trump jolts his campaign

    [ad_1]

    image

Four months ago, Trump himself had appeared at Mar-a-Lago under wildly different circumstances. His campaign launch that day was notable for its absence of energy. The reviews were lackluster. Ron DeSantis was ascendant, prompting a top Republican group to release internal polling showing the Florida governor ahead. The party’s poor midterm results loomed over the evening. Critics wondered whether Trump was up for another two-year campaign.

When Trump eventually arrived on Tuesday evening, there was an aura of anger and defiance about him. Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire” played over the speakers before Trump walked out. When he finally spoke, he ticked off the list of scandals he’s endured and the prosecutors and opponents he’s faced. Each one — he claimed — was biased against him. Alvin Bragg, the Manhattan D.A., was the real “criminal.” Jack Smith, the special prosecutor investigating the lead up to Jan. 6, a “lunatic.”

Tuesday, in a way, was like a campaign relaunch, still grievance-filled but with Trump world feeling that they are in a better position. The polling that just months ago was used as evidence of his failure to rally the base has dramatically shifted, now showing the former president with leads upward of 20 percentage points over DeSantis. It underscored the central paradox of Trump’s political career: His standing benefits from the crises he endures.

“We’re back to all Trump all the time,” said former House Speaker and past presidential candidate Newt Gingrich. “Nothing makes him happier. Now, he’d like it to be more positive than it is, but if his choice was between being totally ignored or being in the middle of a firestorm, he’s in the middle of a firestorm. And he’s good at it.”

Gingrich, who supported Trump in 2016 earlier than many high-profile Republicans, said he used to chuckle as he watched other GOP candidates scramble to break through the Trump news cycles during that primary.

“All these guys would go out spending all their money to buy ads, and Trump would just exist — get more press coverage than all of them combined,” Gingrich said. “Guess what. He’s back.”

Under normal circumstances, having a historic indictment handed down by the Manhattan grand jury against you, and pleading not guilty to 34 felony counts of falsifying business records of the first degree, does not qualify as being “back.” But Trump is not your typical candidate.

His team dutifully prepared for Tuesday, considering the choreography of the arraignment, from the drive from Mar-a-Lago to the airport in Palm Beach, to Trump’s speech. No reporters traveled with the ex-president, but he was joined by a videographer who shot footage of the trip, a sign of how his team planned to capitalize on images from the day.

Trump flew up to New York on Monday with a large crew of advisers and aides, including Susie Wiles and Chris LaCivita, Jason Miller, Steven Cheung, Boris Epshteyn and Dan Scavino. Televisions aboard his private plane were tuned to Fox News, and Trump, according to aides, made tweaks to his planned remarks.

Trump decamped to his Trump Tower penthouse on Monday and was updated by his aides and lawyers. A person close to Trump described him as “resolute” and “ready for the challenge,” but throughout the evening, in a public sign of his deep concern and frustration with the situation, he fired off angry all-caps missives on Truth Social taking aim at Bragg and the Justice Department’s special counsel. Trump was particularly set off by a report that revealed he would face 34 felony counts alleging falsification of business records. It was the first Trump or his legal team had heard of what was in the sealed indictment.

Before departing for court on Tuesday afternoon, the former president huddled with aides in his suite at Trump Tower. He spent part of the time drafting his evening speech. The former president then spent his plane ride back refining the speech and watching coverage of the indictment on the big-screen TV in the cabin of his plane.

Within Trump’s orbit there was a sense that they had found a new grievance to latch onto, and one more compelling and electorally effective than conspiracies about a stolen 2020 election.

“Now, he’s got something that a greater portion of the overall electorate is going to be focused on, and a greater portion of the Republican base believes is true,” said Gregg Keller, a Missouri-based Republican strategist.

While most Republicans expressed concerns about whether the 2020 election “was on the up and up,” Keller added, there is “near unanimity” among conservatives on believing the prosecution of Trump is politically motivated.

Indeed, public polling taken since news broke of a likely Manhattan indictment found that nearly all Republican primary voters believe the case is politically motivated, an opinion shared by most voters across the spectrum, even those who support the indictment, a new CNN poll found.

At Mar-a-Lago on Tuesday, there were familiar faces — including Roger Stone, the self proclaimed “dirty trickster,” who chatted with Trump aides and Trump White House physician turned Texas congressman Ronny Jackson, Rep. Matt Rosendale (R-Mont.) and former Trump cabinet member Ric Grenell — mingling with guests. There were some unfamiliar ones, too. Nick Simon, a 27-year-old travel agent and Trump Doral member, said he was invited to the event as a club member. Earlier that day, he watched Trump’s arraignment from the golf club restaurant. He compared Trump to Al Capone, the mobster who was eventually arrested on tax evasion. “This is how the guy became president,” Simon said of the media attention for Trump. “He said I’m going to hijack that party.”

Mike Lindell, the MyPillow CEO, showed up on Tuesday to support Trump, as well. He predicted that the indictment would solidify Trump’s “2024 win.” Unless, he added, “we don’t get rid of the electronic voting machines.” A particular Lindell obsession.

What remains to be seen, however, is not the role that electronic voting machines may play but whether Trump can sustain outrage over the indictment for months to come, or how anticipated future indictments in other jurisdictions will play with voters as the facts are revealed.

But the early impact could be visible not just in the temperament Trump brought with him to his address on Tuesday evening, but also the ways in which his GOP competitors were forced to adjust to it all.

News of Trump’s indictment effectively sucked all the oxygen away from his 2024 rivals. On Monday, former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley made a visit to the southern border that was overshadowed by preparations for Trump’s arraignment. Sen. Tim Scott’s (R-S.C.) political team on Tuesday went ahead with formally announcing his upcoming early-state swing, a press release sent half an hour before Trump entered the Manhattan courthouse. Even the media appetite for DeSantis news was subdued on Monday and Tuesday, with top headlines on the Florida governor being that Democrats had released an opposition file on him, and the author Judy Blume had critical words about him.

It demonstrated the challenges Trump’s rivals face in going head-to-head with a man who has decades of experience manipulating the media even as he faces unprecedented legal peril.

“Before this indictment it was already tough for any Republican to attack Trump, and the reason is because for the last five years voters were under the belief that if you attack Trump you’re a RINO or establishment Republican,” said a Republican operative close to Trump’s campaign. “Now that got even harder. You’re attacking him while Democrats are going after Trump in New York — how does that not make you look allied with the people who are trying to take him down?”

Vote for any party but not TMC, BJP’s Suvendu urges people

    [ad_1]

Chandrakona: Donning a white T-shirt with his ‘No Vote to Mamata’ slogan on it, leader of opposition in West Bengal assembly Suvendu Adhikari on Monday addressed a rally in Paschim Medinipur district, urging the people to vote for any party in the panchayat elections but not the TMC.

Addressing the rally in Chandrakona, Adhikari claimed that a BJP government in the state can accelerate the development of West Bengal as it will work in synergy with the Centre.

“I would urge the people not to cast their votes for this corrupt TMC. Vote for any party or candidate you like, but please don’t cast your valuable votes for this party of thieves,” he said.

    MS Education Academy

“If those opposed to the TMC stick to their single-point agenda of removing it from power, then this corrupt regime can be ousted,” he added.

Criticising the ‘No Vote to BJP’ campaign ahead of the 2021 assembly elections, Adhikari coined the ‘No Vote to Mamata’ slogan, which he used extensively during the Sagardighi bypolls in Murshidabad district. The Congress with the support of the Left Front won the by-election last month in a major setback to the TMC.

Amid criticism by the TMC that the state BJP was working in an understanding with the Congress and the CPI(M), Adhikari had earlier clarified that “No Vote to Mamata” doesn’t mean a call to vote for the other two opposition parties.

TMC state spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said his party enjoys “solid support” of the people of the state, and the results of the upcoming elections would prove it.

“We all know that the CPI(M), BJP and the Congress have formed an unholy alliance in West Bengal. But, this nexus will be defeated by the TMC with the support of the people of the state,” he said.

Samajwadi Party trying to unite ‘Bahujan Samaj’: Akhilesh Yadav

    [ad_1]

Lucknow: A day after BSP chief Mayawati targeted the Samajwadi Party, SP president Akhilesh Yadav on Monday said his party is out to unite the ‘Bahujan Samaj’ and warned those who “indirectly help” the BJP in elections.

Mayawati on Sunday charged that the SP was trying to politically use the name of BSP founder Kanshi Ram even though it has a long history of being ungrateful to him as well as B R Ambedkar.

Yadav attended a function in Rae Bareli on Monday after unveiling a statue of Kanshi Ram.

    MS Education Academy

“We are the people who follow the path shown by Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar and Manyavar Kanshi Ram. We are not the ones who are out to make a dent in the ‘bahujan samaj’ but we are those who bind them. ‘Netaji’ Mulayam Singh Yadav and Manyavar Kanshi Ram had started a new kind of politics in the country,” the SP chief was quoted as saying in a press statement.

The SP chief said Mulayam Singh Yadav had helped Kanshi Ram win the Lok Sabha seat from Etawah and reach Parliament.

“Today there is a need to unite the society. The path shown by Dr Ram Manohar Lohia in the Samajwadi movement is the same path followed by Bhimrao Ambedkar and Kanshi Ram,” he said.

Referring to the BJP slogan “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas”, Yadav said it can be realised only when a caste census is undertaken.

“Without a caste census, social justice and ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ is not possible. With the kind of decisions the BJP is taking, the backwards, Dalits and the poor will not be counted. BJP is handing over everything in private hands and after privatisation, how will backwards, Dalits get the rights given to them in the Constitution,” he asked.

Saying that this fight is long, Yadav said “we tried , also got into an alliance with BSP and it reached ten from zero. Today all the big leaders of BSP are in Samajwadi Party.”

“BJP contests elections by taking support of others and so, one has to be careful of the BJP and those who indirectly help the BJP,” he said.

‘Bahujan Samaj’ usually refers to Dalits and Other Backward Classes.

Finland’s PM Sanna Marin’s party defeated in tight parliamentary elections

    [ad_1]

Helsinki: Finland’s Prime Minister Sanna Marin’s party was defeated in tight parliamentary elections on Sunday (local time) after a center-right party stressed on country’s economic troubles, New York Times reported.

Marin’s Social Democratic Party was outpolled after the center-right National Coalition Party-led by Petteri Orpo, 53, received the most votes followed by the right-wing Finns Party and the Social Democrats.

Petteri Orpo’s party National Coalition Party received more than 93.4 percent votes, which means that very soon, the country will get the new Prime Minister.

Marin, 37, was narrowly defeated. Despite her popularity, the election turned on the economy, and Orpo was successful in arguing that public spending should be reduced and that Finland’s debt is too high, New York Times reported.

The radical right Finns Party, meanwhile, gained seven new MPs and took 20 percent of the vote.

The National Coalition Party was on top with 20.7 percent, followed closely by the right-wing populist party The Finns with 20.1 percent, while the Social Democratic Party of Marin garnered 19.9 percent.

The Centre Party, Left Alliance, and Greens all suffered large losses after their participation in the current five-party coalition, with leaders of all three saying it would be difficult for them to go back into government after these election results.

According to Yleisradio Oy, the country’s national public broadcasting company, Orpo faces a difficult job forming a government in the new parliament, with his first task to put out feelers to each of the parties to find any common ground on the important issues and explore the prospect of drafting a government program.

Once that task is complete, he will enter into negotiations with his preferred coalition partners and set out a plan for the next four years.

The NCP has led in polls for almost two years, although its lead melted away in recent months. It has promised to curb spending and stop the rise of public debt, which has reached just over 70 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) since Marin took office in 2019, according to Al Jazeera.

Sanna Marin, upon her confirmation by Parliament at the age of 34, became Finland’s youngest-ever Prime Minister and was the youngest serving state leader. She has been the Prime Minister of Finland since 2019 and a member of Parliament since 2015.

Recently, New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern was the latest female Prime Minister who stood down from her post. Chris Hipkins succeeded her as the new leader of New Zealand.

The three-minute video featured former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who led both the tenures of the UPA and former Congress presidents Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.

The BJP said that with Rs 48 trillion 20 billion 69 crore, many works could have been done – from security to the development of the country.

“Using this amount, 24 INS Vikrant, 300 Rafale jets, and 1,000 Mangal Missions could have been made or purchased. But the country had to bear the cost of Congress’ corruption, and it lagged behind in the race of progress,” the video message added.

“During UPA’s tenure from 2004-2014, many scams happened… Coal scam of Rs 1.86 lakh crore, 2G Spectrum scam of Rs 1.76 lakh crore, MGNREGA scam of Rs 10 lakh crore, Commonwealth scam of Rs 70,000 crore, Rs 362 crore bribe in the helicopter deal with Italy, Rs 12 crore bribe for the chairman of the railway board,” the BJP said in the video message.

At the end of the video message, the BJP stated, “This is only the jhanki (trailer) of Congress’ corruption, the movie is still not over.”
