  • People in J-K feel disempowered by bureaucratic regime, says Apni Party

People in J-K feel disempowered by bureaucratic regime, says Apni Party

    [ad_1]

Jammu: Asserting that Jammu and Kashmir residents want the restoration of their “honour and dignity”, Apni Party chief Altaf Bukhari on Saturday demanded holding the much-delayed assembly elections in the Union Territory for the “empowerment of the people”.

“The people across Jammu and Kashmir are feeling disempowered by the bureaucratic regime. On the other hand, the unnecessary delay in holding assembly elections has given rise to a feeling of alienation among the people that needs to be addressed at the earliest,” Bukhari said at a public rally in Rajouri district.

The former minister alleged that the basic needs of the people — be it electricity, drinking water, roads, infrastructure for hospitals and educational institutions — are not available in Rajouri and its border villages due to the poor response from bureaucrats.

    MS Education Academy

“As the civil administration has completely collapsed, it is the right time to restore the confidence of the people who are feeling sidelined with no elected representative or government in place,” he said.

Bukhari said the people in the Jammu and the Kashmir regions have a similar demand to restore the statehood and hold assembly elections without delay.

“If elections can be held in Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat and other states and Union Territories, why are they delayed in Jammu and Kashmir?

“The people want their honour and dignity to be restored with the restoration of statehood,” he said.

Bukhari said the elected government is responsible to the people as it works for them.

“However, the babus (bureaucrats) are not answerable to the people. If we form the next government, the officials ignoring developmental works and engaging outsiders in village-level works will have to face action under the rules,” he said.

Bukhari said the Apni Party was founded to work for the welfare of the people and to protect their basic rights — be it land or jobs.

“The opposition parties created suspicion among the people following the foundation of the Apni Party as they lost their ground. These politicians were enjoying their days after the August 5, 2019, decision in the houses, guest houses and hotels but we did not remain silent.

“Unlike them, we risked ourselves and came out to represent the people,” Bukhari said, adding, “We went to Delhi to get protection for the jobs and land for the residents of Jammu and Kashmir but the other parties that ruled Jammu and Kashmir from time to time went to Delhi to get protection for their own interests,” Bukhari added.

On August 5, 2019, the Centre bifurcated Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories and abrogated the provisions of Article 370 of the Constitution that accorded special status to the erstwhile state.

Bukhari also slammed the political parties, including the BJP, for creating misunderstanding among the people of the two regions.

“They do divisive politics while we believe in unity and brotherhood among the people in Jammu and Kashmir,” he alleged.

  • Dream dinner party guests: Obama, Springsteen and Spielberg delight Barcelona restaurant staff

Dream dinner party guests: Obama, Springsteen and Spielberg delight Barcelona restaurant staff

    [ad_1]

Staff at a Barcelona restaurant were left amazed when a mysterious last-minute booking turned out to be for the former US president Barack Obama along with film director Steven Spielberg and singer Bruce Springsteen.

After dining on Thursday evening at the Palace Hotel’s Amar restaurant, the trio posed for a photograph with employees. The picture was posted on Instagram by staff member Pol Perello and captioned: “Pleasures that this job brings you!!”

Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama, along with Spielberg and his wife Kate Capshaw, were in town for Springsteen’s Friday night concert at Barcelona’s Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys.

The seafood dinner took place after the Obamas’ late night flight to Barcelona, according to Spanish radio network Cadena SER. Amar chef Rafa Zafra said their reservation was made only hours beforehand at the recommendation of famed Spanish-American chef José Andrés.

“José Andrés called me and told me that it was a very important table, but that we should please not say anything,” Zafra told Cadena SER. “And of course, I began to investigate and saw that Obama was coming, that Bruce had a concert…”

The group came “tired”, but keen to “try everything”, according to Zafra. During the meal, they “ate a lot” — including oysters, shellfish, and caviar — and “drank a little”.

“The one who behaved best was the one who had to work today,” Zafra said, referring to Springsteen’s Friday night concert.

On the group photo, Zafra said: “The security people told us to please not ask them for photos, but just before leaving, Obama entered the kitchen and told us that this had been one of their best meals and if they could take a photo with the whole team.”

On Friday, Barack and Michelle Obama, accompanied by Spielberg and Capshaw, visited a handful of Barcelona’s landmark cultural sites, local media reported, including the Sagrada Familia and the Moco Museum.

According to photos and videos shared by Spanish media, the Obamas — surrounded by heavy security detail — strolled around central Barcelona hand-in-hand, occasionally waving at onlookers.

Spielberg, a longtime friend of Obama’s, has been a fixture at events and holidays with the former president. During his White House tenure, Obama awarded the acclaimed director with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015.

“His stories have shaped America’s story and his values have shaped our world,” the then-president said.

Obama has been friends with Springsteen since the Boss supported him on the campaign trail during the 2008 presidential election. The pair also co-hosted the 2021 podcast series “Renegades: Born in the USA”, in which they discussed their friendship, their families, music, and issues facing America.

    [ad_1]

Amethi: The Amethi district Congress chief has been booked for allegedly abusing and beating up a party worker for donning a saffron kurta to the party office here, police said on Friday.

On the complaint of Akhilesh Shukla, an FIR has been lodged against Congress district unit president Pradeep Singhal, Youth Congress district president Shubham Singh and others for abusing and beating Shukla and issuing life threats to him, Station House Officer of Amethi Kotwali police station Arun Kumar Dwivedi said.

Shukla, a former vice president of the Amethi Congress unit, said when he visited the party office at Durgapur Road here wearing a saffron kurta and white pants on Thursday evening, party workers accused him of supporting the BJP through his attire instead of campaigning for the Congress for the upcoming municipal elections here, the police officer said.

The argument escalated soon and a dozen people, including Singhal and Singh, thrashed him fiercely and tore his clothes, he said quoting the Shukla’s complaint.

Subsequently, a case was registered late Thursday evening under the Indian Penal Code, Dwivedi said.

Dismissing Shukla’s allegations as “baseless”, Singh said it was a conspiracy to tarnish the Congress’ image.

He added that Shukla was making “wild allegations” as he failed to get a position in the district party leadership.

Telangana: KCR tells party members to prepare for early polls

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister and BRS national president K Chandrashekar Rao on Thursday told his party leaders to prepare for the state elections which he said, will be held in October this year.

According to sources, the state cabinet could ask the Governor to dissolve the Assembly, in which case the elections would be held within the time period as stipulated by the Constitution.

KCR talked of the “impending” elections while speaking to office-bearers at the BRS’s general body meeting on the party’s founding day, in Hyderabad.

    MS Education Academy

Addressing the meeting, the Telangana chief minister claimed the strides that the state has made show that anything could be achieved in a “parliamentary system”.

“Now, we are moving ahead with the vision of putting the country on the path to progress with a slogan of ‘Aab Ki Bar Kisan Sarkar’,” he added, underlining the party’s ambition to mark its political and electoral footprints beyond Telangana.

BRS won 63 seats in the first Assembly election since the state was founded. It bettered its performance in the subsequent Assembly polls, bagging 88 seats.

“The BRS will win more than 100 seats in the next (Assembly) elections. Returning to power in Telangana won’t be a challenging task for us but the priority should be to win more Assembly seats than we did the last time,” the CM said.

“We will put out television advertisements and also produce (promotional) films in future to help the party reach out effectively to the masses. If necessary, the party will also launch a TV channel of its own,” the CM said.

He directed BRS leaders to identify “idle” government land in all the districts and inform his office about it so that the plots could be distributed to the poor for building houses.

“In some villages, government plots are lying idle. Submit the details of such land with survey numbers at my office. Suitable land will be distributed to the poor so that they could build houses,” he said.

Earlier, on Thursday, KCR laid floral tributes before the statue of Telangana Talli at Telangana Bhavan in Hyderabad. Later, the BRS Supremo unveiled the party flag.

The meeting of the party representatives began with an inaugural speech by BRS Secretary General and MP K Keshava Rao.

Abhishek cautions party workers against violence during TMC mass outreach campaign

    [ad_1]

Cooch Behar: Senior TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee on Wednesday cautioned a section of party workers against using strong-arm tactics to manipulate public opinion on selecting candidates for the West Bengal panchayat polls during its mass outreach programme.

His remarks came a day after the inaugural day of the much-touted mass outreach campaign was marred by ruckus as infighting within the TMC came out in the open over the secret ballot voting process as two groups came down to blows during the event.

Banerjee, the TMC national general secretary, said those opposed to the programme, ‘Trinamool-ey Nabajowar’ (new wave in Trinamool), are free to leave the party.

    MS Education Academy

Miffed over the incident, Banerjee had said the secret voting process would be conducted again there on Wednesday and cautioned that if some people think they can hijack the process of candidate selection through muscle power, “They are living in a fool’s paradise.”

While addressing a rally at Cooch Behar Dakshin constituency on the second day of his tour, he said, “If some people think that by multiple requests or by ensuring more votes through unfair means, they can secure their candidature, they are wrong,”

Banerjee, considered number two in the TMC, said the campaign would empower people to choose their own candidates through a secret ballot, whom the party would give nominations in the panchayat polls.

“Those unhappy with the programme are free to leave the party. We don’t want rotten elements in our party. One of the aims of this campaign is to cleanse the Panchayati Raj system,” he said.

Hitting out at BJP legislators from Cooch Behar district for not fighting for people’s rights in the area, Banerjee said locals must gherao the houses of such public representatives and seek answers.

“The BJP MLAs don’t fight for the rights of the people. They sport saffron tilak, wear a saffron scarf, enter the Assembly raising Jai Shri Ram slogans, and leave it shouting the same. People must gherao the houses of those who were elected from here as they have not worked for the people,” he said.

Banerjee, the nephew of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, said that in the next two months, he will be staying on the streets and travelling more than 3500 km – from Cooch Behar in the northern part of the state to Kakdwip in the southern.

  • Atiq Ahmad’s wife Shaista Parveen still in BSP, says party leader Uma Shankar

Atiq Ahmad’s wife Shaista Parveen still in BSP, says party leader Uma Shankar

    [ad_1]

Ballia: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Uma Shankar Singh on Sunday said Shaista Parveen, the wife of slain gangster-politician Atiq Ahmad, is still in the party and has not been expelled from it.

Speaking to reporters here, Singh — the lone BSP MLA in the 403-member UP Legislative Assembly — said, “Shaista Parveen, wife of Atiq Ahmad, is still in the party. She has not been expelled from the party. She is not occupying any post in the party. If she is convicted, she will be expelled from the party. She is yet to be convicted. The party is sympathetic towards her.”

To a question that the BSP has been termed as BJP’s “B-Team” by Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, he said, “Akhilesh Yadav does not have any issue except defaming the BSP.”

    MS Education Academy

On April 10, BSP chief Mayawati had said her party will not field gangster Ahmad’s wife Parveen or any other member of his family in the mayoral election in Prayagraj.

Parveen had joined the BSP in the presence of its senior leaders on January 5, and was reportedly being considered as the party’s mayoral candidate for Prayagraj.

The urban local body elections will be held in the state on May 4 and 11.

“As far as Shaista Parveen is concerned, I would like to make it clear that as per the facts emerging from media reports regarding the Umesh Pal murder case, as soon as the name of Atiq’s wife emerged and after she has gone underground, the situation has changed,” Mayawati had told reporters.

“In this scenario, our party will now not give the mayoral ticket to Atiq’s wife, nor to any member of his family,” she had said.

The BSP chief had also said, “As far as the question of keeping Atiq’s wife in the party is concerned, a decision will be taken soon from the facts that emerge after she lands in the police net.”

On March 13, BSP leader Uma Shankar Singh, who is also the Leader of the party in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly, had come out in support of Parveen, saying the police’s cash reward for information on her is an attempt “to divert attention” from its failure in solving the Umesh Pal murder case.

The Rasra MLA had said, “Shaista Parveen has no relation, even remotely, with the murder case. Even the police have not been able to prove it. She is a social person.”

“Shaista Parveen is all set to become the mayor of Prayagraj and the BJP is going to lose the seat. This is the (reason) behind the BJP’s fury,” Singh had said, and stressed that BSP chief Mayawati has already announced that action will be taken against Parveen if the allegations against her are proven.

“We still stand by that. If the allegation is proven, Shaista Parveen will be expelled from the party. The BSP never compromises on matters of crime,” Singh had said.

Umesh Pal and his two police security guards were shot dead on February 24 outside his home in Prayagraj’s Dhoomanganj area.

Based on a complaint lodged by Umesh Pal’s wife Jaya Pal, a case was registered on February 25 against Atiq Ahmad, his brother Ashraf, wife Parveen, two sons, aides Guddu Muslim and Ghulam, and nine others.

On March 28, an MP/MLA court held Atiq Ahmad and two others guilty in the 2006 Umesh Pal kidnapping case and sentenced them to life imprisonment. That was Ahmad’s first conviction even though more than 100 cases had been registered against him.

The 60-year-old former Samajwadi Party MP was brought from Sabarmati Jail in Gujarat by road for hearing in the case in Prayagraj.

On April 15, Atiq Ahmad (60) and his brother Ashraf were shot dead at point-blank range by three men posing as journalists in the middle of a media interaction on Saturday night while police personnel were escorting them to a medical college here for a checkup.
