  • Shopkeepers refuse to accept Rs 1, Rs 2 coins in parts of Kashmir

Srinagar, Feb 28: People from many parts of South Kashmir are complaining that shopkeepers and traders aren’t accepting Rs 1, Rs 2 coins, a claim rightly rejected by the J&K Bank authorities.

People from different parts of Kashmir told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that whenever they visit shops to buy matchboxes or other items, shopkeepers aren’t accepting the coins of Rs 1 and Rs 2. They even complained that cleaners of passenger vehicles aren’t also accepting the coins.

They said for the last several months, many people including shopkeepers, traders and the general public are not accepting one rupee, two rupee coins citing the reason that others are not taking it too. It has become like an unauthorised ban on small coins by some locals which is continuing especially in Southern Kashmir’s Anantnag and Kulgam districts, they said.

“I have hundreds of such coins, where should I spend them when no one is taking them from me. That is why I have stopped accepting them too,” Aqib Ahad, a local shopkeeper from Qazigund, said.

People demanded that the government must issue directions in this regard and action must be taken against the people who aren’t accepting the coins. They demanded that the government must clear the confusion at an earliest.

An official from administration told KNO that it is an offence to refuse the currencies issued by the government and action will be taken against those who are not accepting such coins.

Taking to KNO, Managing Director and CEO J&K Bank, Baldev Prakash said all our Bank branches are accepting one and two rupee coins and people can deposit them in any bank branch. On being asked why some people are not accepting it, he said it is responsibility of administration to take call on this—(KNO)

Massive earthquakes can hit these parts of India any time, warns NGRI- Details Here

The National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) on Tuesday predicted massive earthquakes in the Himalayan region with the potential to affect Uttarakhand and Nepal in the near future. It, however, added that strong building structures can prevent loss of property as well as life.

While speaking to media, NGRI’s chief scientist Dr N Purnachandra Rao said that Earth’s surface comprises various plates that are constantly in motion and the Indian plate is moving about 5 cm per year, leading to accumulation of stress along the Himalayas.

The accumulated stress increases the possibility of a greater earthquake, he said.

We have a strong network of 18 seismograph stations in Uttarakhand. The region referred to as the seismic gap between Himachal and western part of Nepal including Uttarakhand is prone to earthquakes that might occur at any time,” added Dr N Purnachandra Rao.

The NGRI scientist stressed that the earthquakes can hit with magnitude as strong as 8 on the Richter Scale.

Talking about the deadly earthquakes in Turkey recently, he said that the damage was more in the country because of the poor quality of buildings.

We can’t stop earthquakes but we can prevent loss. There are guidelines issued by the Government of India for construction of buildings in these earthquake prone areas, so public should follow those guidelines,” he advised. (Times Now)

  • Zelenskyy open to considering some parts of Beijing’s proposals to end Ukraine war

Zelenskyy open to considering some parts of Beijing’s proposals to end Ukraine war

    [ad_1]

russia ukraine war one year anniversary 41136

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy cautiously welcomed Beijing’s efforts toward ending the war in Ukraine and said he would like to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss China’s proposals.

Speaking at a press conference in Kyiv Friday to mark the first anniversary of Moscow’s invasion, Zelenskyy said he was open to considering some aspects of the 12-point “position paper” published by the Chinese foreign ministry. Both NATO and the EU have criticized the initiative, with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen saying that “China has taken sides” in the Ukraine conflict.

Beijing claims to have a neutral stance in the war but also has said it has a “no limits” relationship with Moscow and has refused to criticize President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

Zelenskyy said a meeting with Xi could be “useful” to both countries and for global security. “As far as I know, China respects historical integrity,” he told reporters in Kyiv.

“I believe that the fact that China started talking about Ukraine is not bad,” Zelenskyy said, according to the Associated Press. “But the question is what follows the words. The question is in the steps and where they will lead to.”

Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak called the Chinese proposals “unrealistic” in a tweet on Saturday.

Zelenskyy also warned Beijing against providing Russia with weapons, something of increasing concern to Western governments. China is considering providing drones and ammunition to help Moscow’s war efforts in Ukraine, a person familiar with the matter told POLITICO on Friday.

“I very much want to believe that China will not deliver weapons to Russia, and for me this is very important,” Zelenskyy said, according to Reuters.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg on Friday said the alliance is closely monitoring China’s activities, adding that Beijing sending lethal aid to Moscow would be a “very big mistake.”

French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday welcomed Beijing’s initiative on the conflict in Ukraine and said he will visit China in early April and seek Chinese help in ending the war. “The fact that China is engaging in peace efforts is a good thing,” Macron said, according to French media reports.

The French leader also asked Beijing “not to supply any arms to Russia.” And he sought Beijing’s aid to “exert pressure on Russia to ensure it never uses chemical or nuclear weapons and it stops this aggression prior to negotiations,” according to the reports.

Meanwhile, Beijing announced on Saturday that Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko will visit China on a state visit from February 28 to March 2. The Belarusian foreign ministry confirmed the planned visit.

Lukashenko, a close ally of Putin, has backed Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine and allowed its territory to be used in the Russian assault. Lukashenko said last week that his country was prepared to join Russia’s war against Ukraine, if attacked.

Zelenskyy also said that any proposal to end the war would be acceptable only if it led to Putin pulling his troops out of all occupied Ukrainian territory.

Amid growing concerns in the West about Ukraine’s ability to recover all its territory, NATO’s biggest European members — Germany, France and the U.K. — are putting forward a defense pact with Ukraine as a way to encourage Kyiv toward peace talks with Moscow, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing officials from the three governments.

French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz told Zelensky at a meeting earlier this month in Paris that Kyiv needed to start considering peace talks with Moscow, the WSJ reported, citing people familiar with the conversation.

  • Trump parts with TV ad maker as firm’s partner goes to Haley

Trump parts with TV ad maker as firm’s partner goes to Haley

    [ad_1]

    election 2024 trump 17887

A Jamestown representative did not respond to a request for comment, nor did spokespeople for Haley. But those familiar with the discussions said that Barney Keller, the consulting firm’s president, had signed on with Haley. Keller arranged to work for Haley independently of Jamestown, staying firewalled off from the rest of the firm during the campaign.

But the Trump campaign was not willing to participate in the arrangement.

The prominent GOP media firm has been in Trump’s orbit since 2016, when it began crafting commercials for the former president’s first campaign. Two Jamestown partners, Larry Weitzner and Jason Miller, were key architects of Trump’s advertising strategy, and Miller joined the campaign as a top adviser.

The Trump-Jamestown partnership carried over to the 2020 election, when the firm cut a series of ads for the reelection campaign, including a pair that aired during the Super Bowl.

Jamestown continued to work for Trump after his unsuccessful reelection bid. And Trump’s 2024 campaign paid the firm more than $30,000 in December to produce videos of the former president speaking direct-to-camera.

Jamestown has a long history in Republican politics, working for candidates across the country and up and down the ballot. The firm worked for a number of GOP candidates during the 2022 midterm election, including Pennsylvania Senate candidate Mehmet Oz, New Hampshire congressional hopeful Matt Mowers and New Jersey Rep. Tom Kean Jr.

Trump has begun filling out his campaign team with top adividers, including Republican operatives Brian Jack, Chris LaCivita and Susie Wiles. Last week, the Trump campaign also announced that Miller, who left Jamestown in 2017, would be joining the effort.

It remains unclear who will be replacing Jamestown in producing Trump’s 2024 ads.
