Only women contingents to be part of 2024 Republic Day parade: Defence Ministry

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: In an effort to encourage female participation in various sectors, the government has decided that the Republic Day parade at Kartavya Path will see participation only by women in march pasts, tableaux and other performances.

The Defence Ministry, in this regard, has written a letter to the armed forces and other government departments associated with the parade, stating that the marching contingents, military bands accompanying the marching contingents and tableaux will have only women participants.

The letter comes as a surprise for several senior military officers and has also created confusion. Many believe that there aren’t enough women available in forces for this. The current situation is that some marching contingents consist of men only.

    MS Education Academy

Significantly, the armed forces have taken several measures, including assigning command roles to women, grooming them for future leadership roles and allowing them to join artillery regiments, to promote gender equality.

According to information, the decision to encourage women’s participation in the parade was taken during a meeting held on February 7. The meeting, chaired by Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane, was attended by senior representatives from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Ministry of Culture, and Ministry of Education.

About a month after the meeting, the Defence Ministry formally issued a letter to participating forces, ministries and departments on March 1.

In the letter, emphasis was laid on the role of women in the parade to be held next year.

The letter noted that after detailed deliberations, it has been decided that the contingents (marching and bands), tableaux and other displays during the parade on the Kartavya Path will have only women participants.

All the participating ministries, departments and organisations have also been asked to initiate preparations for the same and share the progress made with the Defence Ministry from time to time.

Some senior officials believe that the government will do what is practical, and for the time being it is difficult to have only female participants in all marching and band contingents.

Significantly, the marching contingents of the infantry in the Republic Day parade constitute the largest number of personnel. Officials argue that women have not yet been included in the infantry. Officers who lead marching contingents consist of personnel below officer rank (PBOR) and the Army has the PBOR cadre women personnel only in the Military Police Corps, they assert.

However, it is not that women have no representation in force or that women are marginalised. They are being assigned roles equivalent to men in all three services – they fly fighter aircraft, serve on warships, are inducted into the PBOR cadre, are eligible for permanent commission, are assigned command roles, and also women officers are undergoing training at the National Defence Academy. Despite this, infantry, tanks and combat positions still do not have that participation of women.

According to the Indian Army, Colonel Geeta Rana has recently become the first woman army officer to command an independent unit in the sensitive Ladakh region bordering China. Apart from this, for the first time, the army has deployed a woman officer Captain Shiva Chauhan in the world’s highest and coldest battlefield Siachen this year itself. The army has also deployed its largest contingent of 27 women peacekeepers to the disputed region of Abyei in Sudan.

Late Saturday, he tweeted about being injured during the parade in Hartford. “What can I say, I love a parade!” he wrote on Twitter.

“I did indeed fracture my femur after a fellow parade goer tripped & fell on me during the parade,” he said.

Because Democrats have a bare 50-49-1 Senate majority, the health and well-being of the Senate’s Democrats has attracted a lot of attention this year, with Sens. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and John Fetterman (D-Pa.) among those who have missed sessions. Prominent Republicans have also been absent at times, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas. All the absences have hindered the Senate’s ability to get work done.

Blumenthal was in Hartford on Saturday to celebrate the championship that the Connecticut Huskies won last Monday by defeating San Diego State in Houston, their fifth national title. “Once again, the Huskies have inspired our state,” he and other members of the state’s delegation said in a celebratory statement Friday. “Five national championships don’t happen by accident.”

Fellow Connecticut Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy said that nothing was going to stop Blumenthal from celebrating the team.

“FYI after he broke his femur he got back up, dusted himself off, and FINISHED THE PARADE. Most Dick Blumenthal thing ever,” Murphy tweeted late Saturday.

In his Sunday tweets, Blumenthal made it clear he had no regrets for his enthusiasm for his state’s college athletes, mentioning the Quinnipiac Bobcats squad that won the NCAA men’s hockey championship on Saturday.

  • Help me get my 44-day wage: A gardener, among special invitees at R-Day parade, to PM

Help me get my 44-day wage: A gardener, among special invitees at R-Day parade, to PM

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A gardener by profession, Sukh Nandan, was among the special invitees to watch this year’s Republic Day parade at the revamped Kartavya Path.

Several workers and labourers, engaged in the construction work of the Central Vista project and maintenance activities around the India Gate and along the Kartavya Path, were offered special passes to attend the parade.

They were allocated enclosure number 17 which was right opposite the saluting dais (on the other side of the Kartavya Path) where Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu among other dignitaries were seated.

Nandan, who hails from the Niwari district of Madhya Pradesh, was delighted to share his experience of seeing the PM from such a close distance. He said he was thrilled when the PM went close to the enclosure and waved at them.

“I felt fortunate to be a part of the function. I had never thought that I would be chosen to be among the special guests,” the 44-year-old said.

However, when asked what would he have asked the prime minister if given chance, he said, “My last contractor refused to pay wages for 44-day work. I will request PM Modi ji to help me get my wages.”

Nandan has been working in the horticulture department at the India Gate for the past two months. Earlier, he was employed at Andhra Bhawan under a contractor.

“He refused to pay my salary for 44 days of work. I have a copy of the attendance register which proves that I was present on those 44 days,” Nandan, who lives in the makeshift tents near India Gate with his wife and two children, said.

“Despite that, the contractor is not ready to release my salary which I deserve. Now, I have also refused to return his brush cutter which I had kept. I have told him that unless he pays my dues, I will not return the brush cutter,” he added.

The local bodies outsource various labour-intensive work to private contractors who hire labourers with a promise to pay at the rate fixed by the government.

Many a time these workers are subjected to exploitation and are denied pay by the contractors on one pretext or the other. They can’t take recourse under the legal system as they neither have the money nor the time and awareness to do that.

According to Nandan, the monthly wage for gardeners fixed by the local municipal bodies is Rs 14,586. “At this rate, my total dues stand at approximately Rs 21,000,” he said, adding that the contractor had offered to pay Rs 6,000 only.

“Now he often threatens me of FIR for taking his brush cutter. I will really be grateful if I get any help from the government,” Nandan said, heaping praise on his present contractor for timely payment.

When contacted, Nandan’s former contractor Jiten Upadhyay admitted not paying the wages, saying that there is a dispute on the pending amount.

“I don’t think his dues are Rs 21,000. Also, besides the brush cutter, he has kept other plumbing equipment too which he has to return first,” he alleged.

Telangana: Sharmila lashes out at KCR for not holding R-Day parade

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Telangana Party chief Y S Sharmila came down heavily on chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) for attempting to cancel the full-fledged Republic Day parade and other celebratory activities.

Sharmila hoisted the national flag at the YSRTP office premises here on Thursday.

Attacking KCR, she accused him of disrespecting the Indian Constitution. “His utter disrespect towards the Indian Constitution is yet again evident in his reluctance to conduct a full-fledged Republic Day event at Parade Grounds. What a shameful irony, he dishonors the Constitution of the country, and then dreams to rule the country!” she said.

She also asked why the ‘promises’ made by KCR during the formative days of Telangana is not yet fulfilled. “This is the same KCR who, by taking Constitutional cover often, sparked off the Telangana sentiment and became chief minister. Today, he shows scant respect for the Constitution, by breaching every promise he had made. What stops him from keeping his promises, from making a CM Dalit to building double-bedroom houses or giving one job per family to giving zero-interest loans to women?” she asked.
